Mary Leona McFarland White
TWO DOT - Mary Leona McFarland White was born on June 14, 1905, in Two Dot, Mont., the only child of Gilbert and Lanie McFarland. Her childhood was spent on the ranch, under the tutelage of her father and her uncle, George McFarland. Her early travels with her father included adventurous trips to Butte, and she witnessed one of the last roundups of the open range at Ingomar in 1915. She attended grade school in Two Dot, boarding school in Lewistown and graduated from Harlowton High School. She went on to attend Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a degree in history. She then went on to do graduate work at the University of Chicago, where she also did social work in the city and became temporarily involved in radical politics.
During the summers, she worked in Yellowstone National Park, where she ultimately met Wilbur "Pete" White. They were married Sept. 12, 1934, in her parents' home on Big Elk. They settled on the ranch (much to Mary's initial chagrin) and lived there for the next 64 years. She was passionate about fishing, wildlife and politics. She made a point to bring people with diverse interests to the ranch from all over the world. Her parties were legendary, with classical music performed by her beloved Uncle Neri Thibeau and Charlotte Moore. Her creativity was expressed through painting, poetry and the relentless redesigning of her home. Mary never shied away from a spirited argument. She fought to protect the integrity of the ranch, trying to hold at bay all manner of predators in the form of wolves, the power company, uninvited hunters and proselytizers.
In June 1989, her ranch house burned, destroying all ranch documents from the old days, her letters, paintings and memorabilia. Mary survived the fire but was never quite the same. A little of her center was gone.
On Nov. 19, 1998, we, her family, lost some of our center when Mary died quietly on her ranch on Big Elk. Survivors include her husband, Pete; a son, Mac; a daughter, Mary K.; and four grandchildren, Sarah, Betsy, Lanie and Harrison. Mary knew all the good fishing holes and berry patches.
Services will be held at a later date. Memorials can be sent to the Pioneer Scholarship Fund at Harlowton High School.

Leona Sarah Tarkio Lumsden
Last Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, on her mother's birthday, Leona Lumsden completed her 89-year walk through life. Among her blessings was that she was able to enjoy her life with minimal physical discomfort and free of confinement up to the moment of her passing. Born Leona Sarah Tarkio Geelhart to Herman and Laura (Wills) Geelhart in Tarkio, Mont., she was raised in Roundup, where she graduated from high school. Turning down a four year scholarship to the University of Montana, she remained close to her family and continued a business college education in Miles City.
It was there that she met her future husband Francis Lumsden. She and Francis moved to Oregon for a period of time and, in 1946, came to make their lifelong home in Gardiner. Together, they operated the Welcome Hotel and Cafe and the Mile Hi Motel while Leona worked secretarial and clerical duties in Yellowstone Park. In the early 1960s, her sister Vivian Ristow with husband Lex also came to live in Gardiner. The community in and around Gardiner yielded a wealth of cherished friends and neighbors that were held dear throughout her life. With the passing of Francis in 1978, Leona continued her work in the Park until retirement while operating the Mile Hi Motel. Leona helped with the care of her ailing sister, Gladys Geelhart. Leona's health began to fail in the autumn of 1996, thereupon she found comfort in the Billings home of her sister and niece, Wanda and Laura Hoag. With the help of her daily caretaker and companion, Thelma Hankinson, she was able to enjoy daily rides and lunches as well as a few long distance trips, one of which was a visit to her brother Percy in Elgin, Ill. Leona held life very dear to her heart and will be missed by all who knew her. Preceding her to her new home in the House of the Lord are her Father and Mother, Herman and Laura Geelhart; sisters Vivian Ristow and Gladys Geelhart; brother Clyde; husband Francis Lumsden; brothers-in-law Douglas Hoag, Walter Noctor and Lex Ristow; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Geelhart; nephew Jim Noctor; grand niece Christina Voise; and grand nephew Michael Provenzano.
She is survived by her sister Wanda Hoag; brother Percy Geelhart; sister-in-law Harriet Stieler with husband Bill; brother-in-law Dale Lumsden and wife; nephews, Ted Hoag, Rex Hoag with wife January, Michael Ristow with wife Janice, and Bill Geelhart with wife Karen; nieces, Laura Hoag with companion Steve Meyer, Patty Buban with husband Bill, LaVon Pickarsky with husband Al, June Provenzano with husband Mario, and Nancy Kay Benjamin with husband Jim; and many loving grand nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel with interment in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Easter Seals, 1130 16th St. W., Billings, MT 59102 or the American Cancer Society, 3021 6th Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101.

Margaret 'Marge' Roberts
ROUNDUP - Margaret Elizabeth Roberts, 78, died Nov. 20, 1998, after a defiant fight with lung cancer. The fourth child of Dennis and Maude Shaw Harper, she was born Oct. 20, 1920, and raised on the family homestead up Harper's Coulee until the family moved three miles south of Shepherd in September, 1930, on what is now the Vermillion Ranch.
On Jan. 5, 1941, she married Frank Fortune. After only three short days of marital bliss, Frank was killed in a boiler accident at the Klein Mine.
On Sept. 28, 1943, she married Oscar "Blackie" Steen. She and Blackie traveled all over the United States during his stint in the Army and business ventures.
On Sept. 2, 1960, she married James H. "Cy" Roberts. They settled in Roundup for the next 31 years, building a prosperous business together.
She claimed to have learned from each relationship. First about loss, second the importance of self-respect and finally the true meaning of love.
She was an avid gardener, and her flowers were often the envy of the neighborhood.
Marge is survived by four daughters, Sandra Kaufman (Bob) of Shepherd, Jean Eberts (David) and Terria Olin, both of Billings and Janet DeVries (Dick) of Roundup; two sisters, Marian Purser and Jean Harper; a brother, Jack Harper; 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
