Dr. Leslie H. Kronmiller
Dr. Leslie H. Kronmiller died on Nov. 21, 1998, at the age of 96 due to complications from a fall.
Dr. Kronmiller is the last surviving doctor of the original 16 physicians who were in medical practice when he arrived in Billings in 1937. At present, there are well over 350 physicians in Billings. His brother, Dr. Eugene V. Kronmiller, later joined him in his medical practice which became known as the Kronmiller Clinic. His brother Bert was an attorney in Hardin.
Dr. Kronmiller was born in Mount Erie, Ill., on Oct. 10, 1902. With his parents Clara and Jay Kronmiller and brother Bert, the family moved to Blackwell, Okla., in 1915, and to Deaver, Wyo., in 1918 where his parents homesteaded a farm. After sustaining a shoulder injury in a power plant construction project in Wyoming at the age of 17, Dr. Kronmiller was hospitalized in Billings. On the recommendation of a banker in Deaver, the Eaton Brothers who started the Billings Polytechnic Institute, now Rocky Mountain College, approached Dr. Kronmiller about attending the Polytechnic to earn his high school diploma. The Polytechnic was an agriculture school at the time, and Dr. Kronmiller fed the milk cows to pay his expenses. Later he took college courses which applied towards his high school diploma. He joined the college debating team and was a member of the school quartet.
Dr. Kronmiller finished his high school education in Billings and attended the University of Idaho and the University of Wyoming. He received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska School of Medicine in 1930. After completing his internship in Butte, Dr. Kronmiller moved to Virginia City and practiced medicine for five years. In 1936 he moved to Vienna, Austria, for a one-year post-graduate course in surgery at the University of Vienna. Upon returning to the United States, he opened his medical office at 311 North Broadway in Billings.
Dr. Kronmiller enjoyed fishing with his family in the early years. He was a great story teller and loved sharing the experiences of his youth. To support himself through school, he worked as a mortician, a bee inspector, unloaded coal cars, sold newspaper subscriptions, fired furnaces, and was the assistant to the physician at the Ford Assembly Plant. His daughters remember his advice over the years: "Waste not, want not, " "Don't sign anything until you sleep on it, " "Learn something new every day, " "A mother's milk is complete nourishment for her baby, " "Wash your hands well and often, " "Don't eat candy or fats or drink pop." He loved music, especially singing, and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. He was known by family and friends as one who could fix anything with his hands. Up to the time of his death, Dr. Kronmiller kept current and voiced his opinion on national and international events. His family is proud of his humble beginnings and subsequent accomplishments.
Dr. Kronmiller is survived by his wife Ruth Kronmiller; two daughters Carol Gibson and son-in-law Robert Gibson of Bozeman and Barbara Fox of Livermore, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law Dr. Eugene and Wanda Kronmiller, stepdaughter Carol Green, a sister-in-law Loretta Kronmiller, all of Billings; former wife Mary Swallow of Modesto, Calif.; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
