Frank V. Boroni

BUTTE - Frank V. Boroni, 84, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, in Butte.

Frank was a lifelong Butte resident, but worked for a rock crushing operation building roads and highway throughout Montana and the western United States.

Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Butte's St. Ann's Church.

Darlene Elliott Gehring

STEVENSVILLE - Darlene Elliott Gehring, 82, of Stevensville, died at Bitterroot Valley Living Center on Wednesday, March 27, 2002.

She was born April 24, 1919, in North Norris, S.D., and was the daughter of Ray and Mae (Mewes) Phillips.

She received her education in Missoula and worked in Montana, Washington and California. She returned to Stevensville in 1986, where she had since resided.

She was preceded in death by her son.

She is survived by her many friends.

Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside cemetery in Stevensville with the Rev. Vicki Horn officiating.

The Whitesitt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gwendolyne C. Yoppe

WHITEFISH - Gwendolyne Emily Campbell Yoppe, 86, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at the North Valley Extended Care Unit.

Gwen was born Feb. 8, 1916, to Glenn and Della Campbell at Smith Valley in Flathead County.

In 1936 she married Lorrance Bentel. He was killed in a farming accident in 1938. On June 24, 1940, she married Louis Yoppe.

Survivors include daughters Janiel Klindt of Sanger, Calif., Marilyn Barta of Battleground, Wash., and Ella Jean Greeman of Salem, Ky.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish. Inurnment will take place at the Tobacco Valley cemetery in Eureka at a later date.

Katherine Laura Mertins

MISSOULA - Katherine Laura Mertins, 71, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002, in her home from natural causes.

Her husband of 51 years, two daughters, five brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

She leaves behind eight children: Theodore R. Mertins of Redmond, Wash., Thomas W. Mertins of Boise, Idaho, Dennis R. Mertins of Missoula, Michael D. Mertins of Everett, Wash., Larry G. Mertins of Spokane, Beverly J. Hannibal of Spokane, Ila M. Cipriani of Avondale, Ariz., and Pamela K. Knuchel of Mesa, Ariz.

Also left are 25 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Included among her friends is the nursing staff from Hospice. Thank you very much for your caring!

Kate was born April 6, 1931, in Bozeman. She was the ninth of 14 children. The family moved from there shortly after her birth.

Kate loved to go fishing and camping with her family. Many hours were spent along Montana's many rivers and streams. She was always busy with her many craft projects. She loved to make things to give to her family and friends. She also loved to play pinochle and spent many hours playing card games with her grandchildren. She will be very missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Fourth Ward, 3201 Bancroft St.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Chalice of Repose Project, 312 E. Pine St. Missoula, MT 59802.

Sunset Memorial Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Virginia Elizabeth Roscoe

CORVALLIS - Beloved mother, grandmother and great-great grandmother Virginia Elizabeth Roscoe, 93, passed away in the early evening Monday, July 22, 2002, at the Aarons Home Care in Corvallis.

She was born in Hamilton on Sept. 4, 1908, the second of four children born to Ralph and Anna (Brooks) Barlow. She attended Como School, Hamilton High School and graduated from St. James School of Nursing in Butte on May 11, 1930.

Virginia married Lloyd Arnold Roscoe on March 18, 1932. Together they had two children, Patricia "Patsy" and Ralph.

In addition to raising her family, Virginia spent her adult life as a registered nurse and retired as a surgical nurse from Marcus Daly Hospital in May 1974.

Virginia, a lifetime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, enjoyed being Mom and Grandma and Great-Grandma "Ginny." Watching and listening to the Hamilton Bronc football and basketball teams was one her favorite pastimes, as well as traveling and visiting with her families in California, Washington and Colorado. She also greatly enjoyed knitting baby sweaters for her great-grandchildren and for church bazaars.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a baby brother, a sister Margaret and her husband Lloyd, who passed away Jan. 27, 1967.

Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Herhold of Altadena, Calif., and Hamilton; son and daughter-in-law Ralph and Dody Roscoe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Rick, Mark, Rene and Scott; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild residing in Washington and Colorado. A sister, Betty Fullerton of Hamilton, also survives her, as do numerous nieces and nephews. Her family and her many friends will miss her.

There will be a viewing from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dowling Funeral Home in the chapel.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dowling Funeral Home in the chapel. The Rev. Father John Darragh of St. Francis Catholic Church will officiate.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hamilton. The Rev. Father John Darragh of St. will be the celebrant. A committal service will follow at Riverview cemetery in Hamilton.

Dowling Funeral Home and Crematory, 415 S. Second St., Hamilton, is caring for the family.

Faye Lawrence 'Larry' Houtchens

MISSOULA - Faye Lawrence "Larry" Houtchens passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2002.

Larry was born Jan. 27, 1932, in Macomb, Ill. He was the oldest of three sons born to Faye and Lillian Houtchens. His childhood and early school years were spent in Monmouth, Ill.

Larry attended Notre Dame University for two years, served two years in the Marine Corps and was graduated from Iowa State University in 1958 with a degree in forestry.

He accepted a job with the U.S. Forest Service and was assigned to a position in Harlowton. His subsequent assignments were in Grangeville, Idaho; Newport, Wash.; and then Missoula. During his years with the Forest Service he worked in timber management and law enforcement.

After his retirement from the Forest Service he worked as a U.S. Marshall in Missoula and Helena. He retired from this in 1994.

Larry is survived by his daughters and their families: Ann Goodman, husband Steve and children Chloe and Keenan of Missoula; Margie Bennett, husband Clark and son Parker of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Mary "Ketty" Monzon and husband Tim of Missoula.

His parents and brothers Pat and Jerry preceded him in death.

Larry was a passionate gun collector and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting and taught hunter safety classes to over 500 students. He also liked canoeing and some of his treasured memories were of canoe trips down the Missouri River. He was an avid reader and never missed an opportunity to watch a John Wayne movie.

Larry was a long-standing member of St. Anthony Parish and found great peace and solace in his Catholic faith. He faced several major health challenges during the past 12 years. He did this heroically and accepted the limitations forced on him with grace, courage and an ever-present sense of humor and wit.

Larry loved and was so proud of his family and cherished his friends. He truly fought the good fight and called his own shots till the end.

Semper Fi

Cremation has taken place. A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. A reception will follow at the church.

Memorials may be sent to the Missoula County Cancer Association, 3005 Queen St., Missoula, MT 59801.

Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
