Edwin Lewis Hammond
ABSAROKEE - Edwin L. Hammond, 88, passed away peacefully Dec. 28, 1998, at his home in Absarokee.
Ed was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Boyd, to Charles and Evea Hammond. He was raised with his siblings on the Dryhead near the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming. In 1941 Ed was drafted into the Army. After completing four and one half years in the service, he returned to the Dryhead to live with his mother and help run the family ranch. When the ranch was sold, Ed and his mother moved to Limestone, and eventually to Absarokee. There he worked for Milligan's Grocery and later delivered milk for the Columbus-Absarokee area.
On July 15, 1964, he married
Christine Mann Haskins, not only gaining a new wife, but seven step-children. After retirement, Ed and Christine spent much of their time traveling, camping, fishing and visiting friends and family.
Ed will be remembered for his gentle teasing manner as well as the help he freely gave to those in need. He found joy in his family, the outdoors and the many children who were drawn to his side.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Roy and William and sons, Louis Haskins and David Haskins. He leaves behind his wife, Christine, brothers, Charles (Wanda) of Lovell, Wyo., and Les (Laura) of Camp Verde, Ariz., sisters, Marion French of Helena, Gertrude Burk of Fern Wood, Idaho, and Helen Asay of Belgrade; daughters, Mary (Jim) Campbell of Roseburg, Ore., Doris (Tom) Grass of Ione, Wash., Muriel Nelson of Park City, and Esther (Gaylord) Potts of Columbus and one son, Kenneth Haskins of Prescott, Ariz. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as his "adopted" families, the Gallagher's and the Joe Foster family and his feathered friend, Mac.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Grace Fellowship in Absarokee. Interment will follow at Mountainview cemetery, Columbus. Reception will be held at Gallagher's Brookside Home in Absarokee. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Chapel - Columbus. "Goodbye, Grandpa, have a great trip and we will see you soon."
Al V. Honstain
MILES CITY - Al V. Honstain, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, in the VA Nursing Home.
Al V. Honstain was born on May 3, 1928, in Kiel, Wis., the son of Jay and Mamie (Cain) Honstain. The family moved back to Montana in the fall of 1928. They settled in Fallon County south of Baker. Al grew up there, attending rural schools and graduating from Baker High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 and spent two-and-a-half years in ETO, mostly in Berlin, Germany. Al received an honorable discharge in December of 1948, and was recalled October 1950 during the Korean War and served until October 1951, receiving an honorable discharge.
Al married
Joann Dicks at Miles City in April of 1950. Three sons were born to this union: Patrick Jay, Bruce Allen, and Brian Jon Honstain.
Al married
Ramona Parrott Samuelson at Lemmon, S.D., on Sept. 14, 1962. He worked various jobs through the years retiring as Electrician IBEW 532 in 1990.
Al was a member of the American Legion Post (past commander), life member of the VFW Post 1579 (past commander and past commander of VFW District 6 Department of Montana), life member of D.A.V., life member of BPO Elks Miles City Lodge 537, member of Miles City Eagles Lodge 885 (past president).
He was active in the First United Methodist Church in Miles City for many years. He helped start the food bank in Miles City, was a service officer for the American Legion and the VFW, and he spent several years as a volunteer at VA Medical Center in Miles City visiting and helping veterans and their families. He enjoyed traveling and fishing with his wife Ramona since their retirement.
Al is survived by his wife, Ramona of Miles City; two sons: Patrick Honstain of Red Lodge and Brian Honstain and his wife, Grace of Billings; a daughter-in-law, Pam Honstain of Powell, Wyo.; a brother Art Honstain of Minnesota; three sisters: Nellie Ducello and Fuzz Herman of Havre, Vivian Perry of Glendive, and Ollie Sparks of Plevna; four grandchildren: Anthony, Dana, Heidi and Haley. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bruce; a grandson, Josh; two brothers, Pat and Chet; and two sisters: Joyce and Alfreda.
A prayer service will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Grover Briggs officiating. Interment will follow in the Veteran section of the Custer County cemetery with full military rites.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Bruce and Josh Honstain Memorial Fund at the First United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.
Carmen L. Hammer
BRIDGER - Carmen L. Hammer, 56, of Bridger, passed away suddenly at her home Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998. She was born Nov. 28, 1942, at Anaconda, a daughter of Andrew and Erma (Premo) Christman.
She had worked at Boulder, Billings and Hardin with mentally retarded children until 1982 when she moved with her parents to a ranch at Harlowton. They moved to Bridger in 1996.
Carmen was preceded in death by her father, Andrew Christman in 1955; a brother, Nolan Nelson; her grandparents, Maude and Isaac Premo and Catherine Christman.
She is survived by her parents, Erma and Norman Nelson of Bridger, and several cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in the Bridger cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel is in charge of arrangements.
C.A. 'Cody' Starr
HUNTLEY - C.A. "Cody" Starr passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 9, 1998, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Mr. Starr had lived for 86 years.
Cody was born in Mandan, N.D., the son of Hilmar and Jetta (Johnson) Starr. He was raised and educated in Mandan and Bismarck and on Aug. 21, 1937, married
Eldora Hoagland in Forsyth.
Mr. Starr worked for the Northern Pacific railroad, later Burlington Northern, on the bridge and building crew all his adult life, retiring in the early 1970s. A private man, Cody loved time in the outdoors, either in his yard with the flowers and squirrels or out fishing the waters he loved in Montana.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda and her husband, Tom Oblander of Ballantine; a son, Don and wife, June Starr of Butte; his brother, Harry Starr of Billings; four grandchildren, including Rocky Oblander of Ballantine, Kim Oltrogge of Gallup, N.M., Rick and wife, Paula Starr of Tacoma, Wash., and Randy and wife, Kelly Starr of Las Vegas, Nev.; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eldora in 1990; a brother, Paul; and two sisters, Helen Smith and Lillie Long.
Visitations will begin Friday morning at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Huntley cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Barkemeyer Park in Huntley. Smith Downtown Chapels is in charge of arrangements.
Robert E. 'Bob' Stone
Robert Ellsworth Stone went to be with his Lord on Dec. 8, 1998, at the age of 84.
Robert was born on Aug. 2, 1914, in Poplar, the only child of Glen and Furn (Miller) Stone. In his 20s he pitched for the community baseball team. During this time he met and married
Mavis McQuiston in Richey on Sept. 2, 1934. He attended the Alliance Church in Fort Peck and that's where he came to know the Lord. He attended the First Alliance Church in Billings.
Mr. Stone lived and worked in Montana all of his life, running the derricks over the tunnels at Fort Peck Dam and later working in the oil fields near Cut Bank. After moving to Billings he owned and operated his own business, Bob's Plumbing and Heating, until his retirement in the 1970s. His business motto was "Do it Right or Leave it Alone."
Bob dearly loved to go camping and fishing in the mountains with his trailer.
Survivors include his wife, Mavis; his daughter, Mrs. William "Yvonne" Groskinsky of Billings; a son, Gary D. Stone of Ephrata, Wash.; seven grandchildren, including Vicky Groskinsky of Helena, Brenda Groskinsky of Lawrence, Kan., Nancy Schwartz of Driggs, Idaho, Randy Groskinsky and Ron Groskinsky of Billings, and Heather Cain and Shannon Reddy of Bellingham, Wash.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitations will begin Thursday afternoon at the Smith Downtown Chapel with the casket open at the church prior to service time. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the First Alliance Church with Reverend James McFadden officiating. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Rachel Leenknecht
Rachel Leenknecht, 88, of Billings, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital.
The daughter of Ferdinand and Sylvia VanSteeland, Rachel was born June 26, 1910, in Kansas City, Kan. As a young child she moved with her family to Montana. She married
Maurice Leenknecht in Billings in 1931. They farmed in the Shepherd area until moving to Billings in 1955. Rachel worked many years for Billings Laundry, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral and the South Side Senior Citizens Center. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her collections.
She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice in December 1958.
Survivors include her son, Frank Leenknecht and his wife, Shirley of Billings, and her daughter, Virginia Wemple and her husband, John of Hardin; a brother, Frederick VanSteeland and his wife, Rosemary of Billings; two sisters, Julia Iacopini of Billings and Irene Langeliers and her husband, Les of Arizona City, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Tony Leenknecht, Nick Leenknecht, Tina Keller, Jerry Wemple and Donna Edwards; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Rite of Committal will be in Mountview cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Northern Rockies Cancer Center or South side Senior Citizens Center.
Alfred H. Urness
Alfred H. Urness passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at the age of 89. He was born on Dec. 18, 1909, to Andrew H. and Mettie Urness in Christiana, Wis.
Al served in 635th Camouflage Engineering Co. of the United States Army. It was during those four years that Al developed his love for painting.
Al was a man who loved traveling and meeting new people. He was a truly a man who loved the basics of life. A talented artist who made his own paint brushes using small tree branches, tin cans and horsehair. It was a talent that he loved to share with everyone he met. He would visit children's hospitals around the country, painting pictures for the children he would meet. Al would travel around the country by bus, train or by kayak. It was by kayak that Al first came to Montana in July of 1952.
He made many friends over the years here in Montana and in Wyoming, and he will be surely missed.
Several nieces, nephews and many friends from all over the United States survive him. His humor and story telling will be missed by all that knew him.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Riverside cemetery. Funeral Arrangements are with Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Albert Sidney Brubaker
TERRY - Albert Sidney Brubaker, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the Prairie Community M.A.F.
Private family funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with private family interment at a later date.
Sollie Reid
RED LODGE - Sollie Reid, 86, of Red Lodge, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 14, 1998, in St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center in Billings following a brief illness.
Born on June 29, 1912 in Byesville, Ohio, he was a son of Henry Sol and Jenny Wilson Reid. At age five he came to Red Lodge with his family in a stagecoach. They lived at Washoe and Bearcreek where he was raised and educated. As a young man Sollie worked on the construction of the Beartooth Highway, and also worked in the area coal mines for several years.
He married
Mary Berta on January 20, 1934, in Red Lodge.
In 1954 he began his career with Montana Power Company, working as a mechanic and maintenance foreman at Absarokee and Dry Creek. He retired in 1977. Sollie helped establish and was a long-time member of the Absarokee Volunteer Fire Department, and later was active in the Red Lodge Volunteer Fire Department. He also belonged to the Beartooth Elks Lodge.
One of Sollie's greatest joys during his retirement years was golfing with "the buffalo herd" at the Red Lodge golf course.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Reid of Red Lodge; two daughters, Michelle Edgell of Powell, Wyo., and Marilyn Otero of Concord, Calif.; one son, Richard Reid of Sundance, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Reid of Kalispell in 1990.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Red Lodge cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of one's choice.
Myrtle Elfreida Morgan Wagenman
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Myrtle Elfreida Morgan Wagenman, 94, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Westview Health Care Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Champion Funeral Home with interment in the Lodge Grass cemetery in Lodge Grass, Mont.
Donald H Davis
LIVINGSTON - Donald H Davis, 88, of Livingston, died at his home Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 15, 1998. Cremation will take place following a family visitation. No services are planned, but friends may call on the family at their home for a time of remembrance and celebration of Don's life. Arrangements are under the direction of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Don was born June 22, 1910, in Memphis, Mo., the son of L. S. and Cora Lough Davis. When he was 2 years old the family moved to Lewistown where he attended schools. He later became a partner with his father in the J. I. Case farm equipment business. On Nov. 20, 1937, he married
Mary S. Jerbic. They moved to Glendive in 1938 where Don was a patrolman with the Montana Highway Patrol until 1944. He then moved to Billings and became a field representative for J. I. Case Co. In 1952 he moved to Livingston and was co-owner and partner with Clayton Olson at Olson Motor Co. until his retirement.
Don had many and varied interests, including gardening, hunting, fishing, foreign cars, guns, music, dancing and travel. He will be remembered not only as a gentleman, but as a truly gentle man. He also had a great sense of humor and the ability to tell stories.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary S. Davis of Livingston; a daughter, Mrs. Max (Diane) Smith of Greenville, S.C.; two sons, Leonard S. Davis and his wife, Winnie of San Mateo, Calif., and Donald Davis II and his wife, Sherry of Conrad; one grandson, Spencer W. Davis of Haywood, Calif.; two granddaughters, Candace Davis of Santa Clara, Calif., and Shanyn Davis of Missoula; two step-grandchildren, Claudia and Nicole Lee of San Mateo; and one niece, Lenna Ruth Yohe of Vancouver, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and his eldest son, Barry Philip Davis.

John Dahlstrom
ESCONDIDO, Calif. - John Dahlstrom died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at the Palomar Continuing Care Center.
Born April 12, 1909, in Bridger, Mont., he graduated from Bridger High School in June 1926 and attended Billings Business College in 1927. He went to work for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in May 1929. He became assistant district manager in charge of Montana and Wyoming operations in 1953. In 1955, John became district manager of seven western states. In 1969, John retired after working 40 years for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. During World War II, John served stateside in the U.S. Navy.
In May 1962, John and Madelyn Mapes Moulton were married
. Madelyn passed away in May 1998. During their retirement years, they lived in Sacramento, Lake Oroville, Folsom, and Ventura, Calif. From May 1998 until his death, John lived with his stepson and his wife in Escondido, Calif.
John is survived by one sister, Helen Breil of Billings, Mont., and his nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.
Inurnment will be in Ventura, Calif., with Mrs. Dahlstrom.
