LaVerne 'Vern' J. Gill
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - LaVerne "Vern" J. Gill, 76, of Sheridan, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.

A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Holy Name Catholic Church with interment in the Sheridan Elks cemetery.

Anthony M. Grano
SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Anthony M. Grano died on Dec. 26, 1998. He was born on Aug. 8, 1936, to John B. Grano and Antoinette Cucciardi Grano in Billings. He graduated from Billings Central High School and received bachelor and master of science degrees from Montana State University.
Anthony then moved to Champaign, Ill., to continue his education at the University of Illinois where he met Karen L. Strack. They married on Nov. 25, 1961. After receiving his doctorate degree in agricultural economics in 1962, Anthony began working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He and Karen lived in Oregon, Washington, and Michigan before settling in Springfield, Va., where he retired from the department on Jan. 2, 1993.

Anthony is survived by his wife, Karen Grano; his son, John L. Grano, and daughter-in-law, Penny; and his daughter, Carla Grano. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at 9 a.m. Interment will be held at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

David Haun Sr.
David Haun Sr., 94, died Christmas Eve morning at Western Manor Nursing Home in Billings. At his request, there was cremation and no services will be held.
Dave was born on Jan. 13, 1904, in Beidick, Russia, to George and Katherine (Uffelman) Haun. The family immigrated to the United States in 1906, eventually homesteading on the Huntley Project. Dave attended school at Osborne.

As a young man, he worked on the building of Kerr Dam near Polson and tended bar in Hardin. During WWII he established the Buffalo Bar and Steakhouse in Billings. He also ranched south of Musselshell and near Pryor. After selling the ranches and closing the Buffalo Bar, Dave owned the Stockman Inn at the Billings stockyards for 10 years. He retired in 1976.

Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He married Molly Ostwald in 1926 and later married Maree Hasher in December 1953. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, both wives, daughter, June and son, Ronald.

He is survived by one brother, Alex of Billings; two sons, David Jr. of Billings, Kenneth of Pryor; daughter, Janet Paris of Great Falls; stepson, Tom Hasher of Denver; and two stepdaughters, Judy Parker of Anchorage, Alaska, and Linda Cederlund of Freeport, Maine; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials to the American Heart Association of Montana, 2812 First Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101.

Leland D. Trusty
Leland D. Trusty, age 76, passed away peacefully, Dec. 28, 1998, with all of his family at his side. He was born Sept. 24, 1922, in Wallace, Neb., to Hallie J. and Kate (Power) Trusty. At age 17 he traveled to Montana with a custom combine crew. Temporarily settling in Grass Range, he met the love of his life, Charlotte M. Buck. They were married in Lewistown, June 1, 1945.
After a couple of odd jobs, he went to work for Consolidated Freightways in 1952 and drove truck for them for 261/2 years until his retirement.

Lee left behind a very close-knit family that will miss him dearly. Survivors include: wife of 53 years, Charlotte (Buck) Trusty; a son, Leland G. Trusty and wife, Melodye; daughters, Kay (Garda) Bryan and husband, Charles, Pinky Thaut and husband, Ron, Lela Hayashi and husband, Mike; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and one sister.

A gathering for family and friends will be held Dec. 31, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the family home, 1925 Ave. C, in Billings.

In lieu of flowers, they family requests donations to Project Hope, Big Sky Hospice, or a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.

Mildred Eilene McCormick
Mildred Eilene McCormick, 81, passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Western Manor after a short illness.
She was born the first daughter of Carl and Irene Pettit, May 2, 1917, in Boulder, Colo., but spent most of her younger days in Hill City, S.D.

Mildred married Norris Bruce McCormick, Aug. 4, 1936, and they had four children: daughter, Norene (Bob) Hubbard of Redondo Beach, Calif.., daughter, Betty (Dick) Christensen of Billings, son, Robert (Kaye) of Cheney, Wash., and son, Rick (Suzy) of Billings.

Mildred was a homemaker, good cook, enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She enjoyed playing pinochle and was a member of several card clubs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sister and brother. She is survived by her four children, 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two-great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the LDS Stake House at 2929 Belvedere Drive, Thursday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. Cremation has taken place.

James Ronald Campbell Sr.
COLSTRIP- James Ronald Campbell Sr., 63, of Colstrip passed away on Dec. 27, 1998, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Jim was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Cedar Key, Fla., to Alex V. and Beatrice Campbell. He attended Cedar Key High School and enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1955 where he was trained as an aircraft electrician.

Jim married Carolyn Watters on Nov. 2, 1962, in Apopka, Fla. They made their home in Cedar Key, Fla., where Jim worked as a commercial fisherman as had four previous generations of his family. In 1975 he moved his family to Colstrip, where he was employed with MPC. Due to his illness, Jim retired from his position as Senior Lead Plant Operator in December of 1998.

Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities with his family. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed reading.

He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge #52 in Forsyth since 1978.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Varnell and Edward.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn of Colstrip; three children, James Campbell Jr., and his wife Connie of Baker; Keith Campbell and his wife Bridgette of Joliet; and Alicia O'Toole and her husband John of Colstrip; four grandchildren, Jessica, Kyle, Cole and Ethan and many nieces and nephews; four sisters, Gladys Osborne and husband Don of Seely Lake, and Margaret Nance of Salt Lake City, Utah; Patricia Goodwin, Gloria Mounce and Viola Mansolo all of Florida.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West, Billings. Viewing will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at Smith West Chapel. Interment of his cremains will be in the Shiloh cemetery in Cedar Key, Fla., at a later date.

The Reverend Edwin Clayton Speare
LAUREL - The Reverend Edwin C. Speare died peacefully Monday, Nov. 30, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings. A long time Laurel resident, Ed was born in Billings on Oct. 18, 1924, to Edwin C. and Henrietta Speare. He attended Laurel schools, graduating in 1942.
Ed attended Montana State College (Bozeman) until interrupted by World War II. He served in the Army (66th Division) as a machine gunner in France, Germany, and Austria. Upon his return from Europe, Ed married his high school sweetheart, Georgia Green, on June 29, 1946. He graduated from Montana State in June, 1949 with a degree in Industrial Engineering.

Ed worked for Bonneville Power and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and lived in Portland and Spokane before returning to Laurel to continue work for the Bureau of Reclamation, later Western Area Power Administration, under the Department of Energy. He retired in 1980 after 34 years of government service.

Although always active in the Episcopal Church, Ed answered the Lord's call to the ministry and was ordained to the priesthood on Dec. 11, 1984. Fr. Speare served his many good friends at St. Alban's, Laurel; the Church of the Good Shepherd, Bridger; St. John's, Powell; St. Luke's, Billings; and St. Stephen's, Billings. The greatest joys of his life were his family and friends, preaching the Good News of the Gospel, and serving at the Lord's Table in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Georgia; sons, Edwin C. III (Suzy) and Robert (Bonnie); daughter, Laura (Roger) Schillinger; grandchildren, Rebecca, Edwin C. IV, Sarah, Amy, Megan, and Betsy; great-granddaughter, Chantel; brother, Judge William J. Speare (Shirley); cousins, Roberta Sotelo, Rachel Harder, and Donna (Tom) Kilpatrick; numerous nephews and nieces including James Vermeulen, William J. Speare II, Peggy Jalenk and Heather Speare; and lifelong friend, James W. Cusick. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helen Miller.

A friend to all, pastor to countless souls, we will miss Ed's great joy for life and his sense of humor. "Well done, good and faithful servant!" Dad, you are our hero.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 13th St. West and Crawford Drive in Billings. Interment to follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation will start 9 a.m. Wednesday at Smith's West Chapel, 304 34th St. W.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's or St. Luke's Episcopal Church or charity of choice.

Loretta 'Det' Balsam
MILES CITY - Loretta "Det" Balsam, age 81, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in her home surrounded by her family.
She lived a wonderful life, full of spirited experiences and treasured relationships with family and friends.

Loretta was born on Feb. 18, 1917, the daughter of Charles Augustus and Inez Mary Grover Waddell in Twin Bridges, and nicknamed Det by her father. She was the fifth of six children including Stanley, Charles, Charlotte, Inez and Glenn. The family moved to Billings when she was a child.

After graduation from Billings High School, Det earned her teaching degree from Eastern Montana College in Billings and taught third through fifth grades for three years, two in Glasgow and one in Billings.

She had already met Elmer Goodman "Doc" Balsam and the two continued a long engagement until they married June 9, 1939.

The couple lived in Billings where their sons E.G. Bill and Charley Chapple were born.

The Balsam family moved to Miles City in 1943 and daughters Barbara Glenn, Dena Lynn and Nannette Inez were born.

The Balsams lived a fanciful life and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Mr. Balsam owned the Northern Tank Line, Midland Lumber Company, the Balsam Ranch and developed the Country Club Estates. They were both active in the Miles City Club, Town & Country Club, the Sage Riders, and she was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary with family and friends in 1989.

Mrs. Balsam will be remembered for her dignity and graciousness along with her gentle strength. She had a very kind spirit. Both Det and Doc were giving and shared their success and their experiences with abounding generosity.

We, the family, are greatly encouraged to know they are together again after seven years apart and that they may now both know peace after spending such a wonderful life together with us.

Survivors include two sons: Bill Balsam and his wife, Margaret of Apple Valley, Minn., Charley Balsam and his wife, Madonna of Mizpah; three daughters: Barbara Lee and her husband, Ronald of Miles City, Detta Graham of Billings, and Nannette Morgan and her husband, Richard of Miles City. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Dawn Dee, Brooke, Shane, Chase, Wade, Jonette, Wref, Niki, Tawni, Brad, Brandee, Brianne, Brett, Skylar, and Mikaela and their spouses: Tony, Jaimi, Amy, Celine, Dirk, Julie, Ged, and Jeff along with 14 great-grandchildren: Chaz, Brittany, Alixis, Kayla, Jensen, Gage, Kayla, Tristan, Hunter, Aaron, Keinan, Keller, Kelsey, and Gavin.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City, Father John Naumann officiating.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Holy Rosary Hospice, c/o Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home, 1717 Main St., Miles City, MT 59301.

Linda Ingram
LAUREL - Linda Ingram, 48, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at the Evergreen Laurel Health Care Center of complications of diabetes.
She was born in Spokane, Wash., Nov. 20, 1950, a daughter of Marion and Dorthea Ingram. She attended grade school in Auburn, Wash., and Joliet and graduated form Joliet High School in 1968.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1962.

Survivors include her mother, Dorthea Knaub of Laurel; one brother, Ron Ingram (Joyce) of Billings; one sister, Diane Yates of Dickinson N.D.; a nephew, Shane Yates of Minot, N.D.; a niece, Michelle Riggs of Bozeman; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Laurel and Billings area.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Cremation has taken place and memorials may be sent to: American Diabetes Association, Montana Affiliate, 2525 6th Ave., Billings, MT 59101-1338.

Charles Emmett (Chink) Jordan
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Charles Emmett (Chink) Jordan passed away Nov. 24, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan.
Chink was born May 16, 1918, in Ismay, Mont., to Charles Emmett and Mable Hunter Jordan, the seventh of nine children. He attended schools at Ismay and St. Martins Academy in Sturgis, S.D.

From May 21, 1942, until Dec. 20, 1945, he served in the U.S. Army, spending much of that time in the Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific, American Theater, Philippine Liberation with a Bronze Star, Good Conduct and Victory Medals.

Chink worked at numerous jobs which included the McNulty Ranch on the Missouri River, the PN Ranch at Winifred, Mont., a wild west show that took him through the eastern U.S., Spike VanCleave's at Melville, Mont., Glacier Park Saddle Horse Company as a wrangler, construction on the Alaskan Highway, gathering of wild horses in Nevada during 1947; and in 1949 he came to the Birney, Mont., area to work with his brother Matt's widow, Ruth. They were married on Dec. 31, 1976, in Tucson, Ariz. Chink retired and moved to Sheridan around 1984 where he resided until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Margaret Rose, Sarah Elizabeth (Sadie), Mary Frances; his brothers, Mathew, Michael, David and Daniel; his wife, Ruth Winans Jordan in 1994; and one grandchild, Matthew Benedict in 1998.

Chink is survived by one brother, Larry (Helen) of Billings, Mont.; numerous nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild: Katy (Jerry) Lunde, Levi and Lacey of Birney; Will Benedict of Birney and son, James Zachery; Mary (Roger) Zier, Tabitha, Katy Ruth, Chance, Kirsty and Shelby of Kirby; Ethan and Drew, children of Matthew Benedict; and great-great-grandchild, James Marion, son of James Zachery Benedict.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Kane Funeral Home, Sheridan, with Father David Duprey and Reverend Ray Clark officiating. Reception to follow at the Elks Lodge in Sheridan. Private committal services will be held at the New Moon Family Ranch at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles Emmett Jordan Memorial Fund, in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, Wyo. 82801.

Aaron Patrick Moore
Aaron Patrick Moore was born Aug. 16, 1975, in Ogden, Utah, and died Dec. 24, 1998. He attended schools in Layton, Utah; Hurricane, Utah; Lovell, Wyo., (where he graduated from high school); and Northwestern College in Powell, Wyo.
Aaron excelled in any sport he ever tried and played football, baseball and wrestled in high school. A born horseman, Aaron spent most of his all too brief adult life working on ranches in Wyoming, Montana, Utah and Nevada.

He is survived by his grandparents, Harold and Beth Moore of Hurricane; parents, Patrick W. Moore of Layton and Maria Guimaraes of Salt Lake City, Utah; sister, Melissa Moore of Salt Lake City; and brothers, Kristopher and Nathaniel Moore of Layton; and numerous other relatives.

He will be sorely missed by all who loved him.

Funeral services are pending.
