Margaret Jensen Witkowski
SIDNEY - Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret Jensen Witkowski, 84, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, 25th anniversary of her first husband's death, at the St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Sidney. Interment will be in Sidney cemetery, Sidney, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Margaret was born on Aug. 30, 1914, to Elizabeth Glodoski, at the Fairview Clinic, house now owned by Ruth Brodhead, in Fairview. Margaret and her Mom homesteaded in the Sioux Pass area until she was 5 or 6 years old, then they moved to Lambert, bought a house and took in 30 boarders. After the boarding house, they ran a restaurant. After a number of moves from Lambert, to Sidney, Scobey and back to Sidney, they bought a house and settled.
Margaret completed the 9th grade. Due to the lack of money, finishing high school was impossible, so Margaret went to work at the "Jensen Cafe," located at what is now the Ranger Bar. Ted Jensen ate his meals at the cafe, roomed in the Jensen's basement and took care of the furnace and other maintenance. Finally Ted got the nerve to ask Margaret for a date and, by Christmas, Ted gave Margaret a Bulova watch. Margaret wasn't sure what she felt for this shy Dane, and when asked what she thought of Ted, she replied, "Oh he's all right for a Dane!" Things did get better and Ted and Margaret were united in marriage in Sidney, Aug. 5, 1933. They were married 40 years, living three years in Miles City and the rest of the years in Sidney. Four children were born to this union. Ted died suddenly on Oct. 1, 1973, just two months after their 40th wedding anniversary.
Margaret continued to run the Sidney Locker Plant, with the help of her oldest son, Butch, for a few years and then sold it and retired.
In November, 1979, Margaret married a fellow Polock, John Witkowski, and they remained in Sidney.
Margaret loved baking, jelly making, cooking and crocheting. She packed these homemade goodies to give to family and friends at Christmas time. Anyone who came to the house always left with a "care package" of jelly, cookies or anything else she felt you could use.
About 16 years ago, Margaret started crocheting afghans for her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She made baby afghans, sweaters and caps as each new baby entered the family!
Margaret died Sunday evening, Sept. 27, 1998, at the Sidney Health Center.
Margaret is survived by her husband, John Witkowski, Sidney; sons, Butch (Ellen) Jensen, Aztec, N.M., Ronald J. (Lee) Jensen, Sidney; stepsons, Don and (Jean) Witkowski, Glendive, Johnny Lee (Sally) Witkowski, Wibaux, and Jimmy (Veronica) Witkowski, and David Witkowski, Wibaux; daughters, Judy (Don) Buckland, Longmont, Colo., and Betty (Russ) Trudell, Fairview; stepdaughters, Maryann Witkowski, Baker, and Anna Marie (Toby) Niestler, Wibaux; sister, Cecila Stubberud, Glendive; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild on the way; 23 step-grandchildren, and 58 step-great-grandchildren.
