Gordon W. Russell
GLENDIVE - Gordon W. Russell, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at his home in Glendive.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the United Methodist Church with interment in the Dawson Memorial cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is in charge.
John Jensen
WORLAND, Wyo. - John Jensen, 70, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Washakie Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the First Southern Baptist Church with private family interment at a later date. Bryant Funeral Home of Worland is in charge.
Grant C. Hilton
HARDIN - Grant C. Hilton, 79, of Hardin, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, in the Billings Aspen Meadows Nursing Home.
He was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Park City, a son of Col. J.E. Hilton and Pearl E. Davis. He grew up and attended schools in the Browning area. He later attended a carpenter's trade school in Minneapolis. He worked as a carpenter on various construction projects throughout Montana, retiring in 1976.
Grant married
Mildred Vaile on Aug. 20, 1941, and the couple made their home in Browning; three children were born to this marriage. Mildred died in an auto accident in 1947. Grant married
Delores Waterhouse in Hardin on April 13, 1952, and the couple made their home in Hardin.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and later received his honorable discharge. He was a member of the Catholic Church and the Blackfeet Tribe. He enjoyed music and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his wife, Delores of Hardin; three daughters, Janice Hilton of Montana, Jeri (Jim) Snell of Miles City and Vel Grinsteiner of Fort Smith; three sons, Jim of Arizona, Dan and Charles of Hardin; one brother, Ed Hilton of Columbia Falls; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel with Fr. Fabian Febring officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Charles Miles Jr.
POWDERVILLE - Charles Miles Jr., age 45, of Powderville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, on his ranch.
Charlie was born on June 22, 1953, in Miles City, the son of Charles and Ramona (Burt) Miles. He attended grade schools in Powderville and graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City. After graduating, he attended Miles Community College for one year and graduated from Montana State University in Bozeman after four years.
He returned to the family ranch at Powderville. On June 10, 1978, Charles and Naomi Stone were united in marriage in Miles City. They ranched at Powderville where he has resided since. He was a private pilot, a member of the MTRA Association and the Masonic Lodge, and enjoyed team roping.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi and one son, Zane of Powderville; his mother, Ramona Miles of Miles City; one brother, Burgess Miles of St. Paul, Ore.; one sister, Martha Miles of Powderville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and one son, Charlie IV, in 1989.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Miles City with Pastors Dan Barber and Floyd Lepoidevin officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.
Anna Rose Contway
MALTA - Anna Rose Contway, 87, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at the Phillips County Hospital of natural causes.
Rosary will at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the church with interment in the Malta cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge.
Dixie M. Foust
GLASGOW - Dixie M. Foust, 86, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at the Deaconess Billings Clinic.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Glasgow Methodist Church. Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings was in charge.
John D. Marker
MISSOULA - John D. Marker passed away after a sudden illness on Aug. 12, 1998, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. He was surrounded by his family and closest friends.
John was rich not in material things but with his pure joy of life. He was an avid fisherman. He may not have caught a lot of fish but he caught a lot of solitude.
He, like his father, loved to work with his hands. People were always drawn to him because of his sense of humor and his caring attitude.
John was born in Billings on May 6, 1948. He is survived by his two sons, Stewart Marker and his wife, Stephanie of Omaha, Neb., and Steven Marker and his wife, Janine of Lincoln, Neb.; his wife, Kathy of Missoula; a sister, Carol Ducharme of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Walter and Isabel Marker.
John's wish was not to have a formal memorial service.
Arrangements are under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
Carl L. Smith
CEDAR RIDGE NORTH - Carl L. Smith, 72, of Cedar Ridge North, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Carl was born Dec. 3, 1925, at Adel, Iowa, a son of Scott and Chloe Smith. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was married
to Shirley Clair in 1948. Carl worked as a compliance officer for OSHA, retiring in 1992. He had lived in Iowa, Texas and Montana. Carl enjoyed hunting, horseback riding, especially his horse, Jake; loved carpentry work and was a former rodeo bronc and bull rider. He was married
to Kathleen White in 1980.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; children, Carline Dewey of Virginia, Mel Harrington of Texas, Patricia DelPizzo of Laurel, Susan Pierce of Washington; stepchildren, Deborah Lowe of Missouri, Rick Torrey of Washington, Cheryl Hyland of Nebraska, Shari Peters of Iowa; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three others who have loved him as a grandfather; three sisters, Doris Tesdahl, Ethel Davis and Mary Wahlert, one brother, Merle Smith, all of Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Laurel United Methodist Church with interment in Laurel cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel. Memorials to a favorite animal refuge.

LAME DEER - Jennie Morrison, 96, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home in Hardin.
Wake service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lame Deer. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Spotted Elk Family cemetery near Lame Deer. Rausch Funeral Home of Lame Deer is in charge.
Isabelle M. Wing
FORT BELKNAP - Isabelle M. Wing, 87, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at her home in Fort Belknap of natural causes.
Wake/Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Medicine Bear Lodge at Lodgepole. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the lodge with interment in the Lodgepole cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge.
Floyd W. 'Bud' Lanphear
Floyd W. "Bud" Lanphear passed away on Aug. 10, 1998, at the age of 77, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bud was born in Yakima, Wash., on Oct. 15, 1920, son of Lorenzo and Laura Lanphear. He moved with his family to Montana as a child and attended the Basin Creek School north of Columbus. In 1940, he married
Mary E. Avery (deceased), and in March of 1956 he married
Alice A. Kortje (deceased). On Dec. 31, 1979, he married
Sarah "Sally" Champion in Billings, who remained brave and by his side through Bud's last days.
Bud worked for the Billings Sanitation Department and also for the State of Montana, as a truck driver, heavy equipment operator, and surveyor, retiring in 1981. Bud then went on to become an Owner Operator.
Bud was an avid motorcyclist and Christian. He was a charter member of the New Hope Baptist Church and active with the Christian Motorcyclists Association, ABATE of Montana, and also in the past had been a member of the Brothers of the Third Wheel and the Billings Motorcycle Club. Along with Bud's love for motorcycles, he also loved hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Sally of Billings; five sons, Richard of Shelton, Wash., Floyd of Natarita, Colo., Clifford of Puyallup, Wash., Mike "Skid" and Patrick Lanphear of Billings; three daughters, Mary LouRone of Horn Lake, Miss., Sharon Rerick of Vancouver, Wash., and Loretta Lanphear; two stepchildren, Roger Morton and Rhonda Strahan of Shepherd; 26 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and his son, Glenn Lanphear.
Bud was a good friend, husband, father and grandfather. He touched and inspired many lives and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services pending at the New Hope Baptist Church, with additional CMA Services at North Park, Aug. 15, at 12 p.m. (motorcade following to Columbus). Memorials are suggested to the Christian Motorcyclists Assoc., Box 20111, Billings, MT 59104.
Howard Haggerty1914-1998
ROSEVILLE, Calif. - On July 19, 1998, Howard Clinton Haggerty passed away at the age of 84 at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael.
Howard, and his twin brother, Homer, were the youngest of nine children born to pioneers, Charles Edward and Lola Zimmerman Haggerty. They had moved to Montana in 1912 and had homesteaded near Lewistown where Howard was born. The parents eventually moved to Bridger, Mont., and are buried there.
Howard and Homer graduated from Bridger High School in 1931. He worked in the CCC from 1935 to 1937. In 1938, Howard married
Regina Northy of Red Lodge, Mont. They moved to Fort Peck where he worked on the construction of the dam. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Panama Canal Zone for bombproofing of the locks during WWII.
In 1943, Howard began working for Kaiser in the shipyards. He retired in 1969 after 36 years of service with different Kaiser companies in Michigan, Argentina and California. His last 20 years were with Kaiser Hospitals and Health Plan as vice president in charge of all their properties.
Howard is survived by his wife, Regina of Roseville; their two children, Janis Charpier and Patrick Haggerty, both of Citrus Heights; and five grandchildren, all of California. Burial at Bridger cemetery. Remembrances to heart associations.
Maizie Ross Grant was born Aug. 28, 1990, in Seattle, Wash., to Deborah and Charles Grant. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Satchell; grandparents, Cornelia and Halcott Grant of Cambridge, Mass., Judy and Bob Buchanan of Billings; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Virginia L. 'Ginny' Dunning
Virginia L. "Ginny" Dunning, 71, of Billings, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at Saint Vincent Hospital. She was born May 17, 1927, in Mountainburg, Ark., the daughter of Bryan and Ivy (Purdue) Ross.
She was raised and educated in Mountainburg and graduated from Mountainburg High School. On Oct. 6, 1950, she married
Francis E. "Frank" Dunning in San Francisco. They have two adopted children, Thomas E. Dunning and Mary P. Siek.
Survivors include her husband, Frank and her two children; her mother, Ivy Ross; her three sisters, Naomi Kilpatrick and Alla Mae Hanna of Mountainburg, and Sue Forester of Fayetteville, Ark.; her brother, David Ross of Clarksville, Ark.; 13 nieces and nephews, 25 grandnieces and nephews, and 10 great-grandnieces and nephews.
Ginny loved to feed friends, neighbors, and relatives. Everyone knew and admired her for her great hostessing skills and her love of little children. She suffered for many years with arthritis and it would please her greatly if, in lieu of flowers, memorials were directed to the Arthritis Foundation, 1643 Lewis Ave., Billings, MT 59102.
The Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at St. Bernard's Parish with Rite of Committal in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Esther Hazel Chapman
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Esther Hazel Chapman, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Mountainview Medical Center of natural causes.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Mayn cemetery. Twichel Funeral Home of White Sulphur Springs is in charge.
John E. Murray
Former Butte resident, John E. Murray of Marysville, Washington passed away Tuesday in Billings.
He was born in Livermore, California on August 3, 1946 to William and Lydia Murray and the family later resided in Butte.
Mr. Murray worked as a structural mechanic for Boeing Aviation for many years until his recent retirement.
He was a very avid outdoorsman especially enjoying hunting and fishing.
He married
the former Shirley Chambers in Billings.
He is survived by Wife: Shirley Murray of Marysville, WA; Sons and daughters in law: John and Terry Murray of Marysville, WA and Mike and Kim Murray of Atlanta, GA; Son: Matthew Murray of Marysville, WA; Daughter and her fiance: Lynn Wanner and David Rose of Lynnwood, WA; Grandchildren: Elizabeth, Andrew, Paige, Kerstyn, Alyssa, Michael and Kaelia; Sister: Lillian Murray of Butte; Brother and sister in law: Bill and Pat Murray of Great Falls.
In accordance with his requests, Mr. Murray has been cremated.
Memorial Liturgy of The Resurrection will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Anns Catholic Church in Butte. Interment of ashes will follow in Mountain View cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
John Franklin Fellows
CODY, Wyo. - John Franklin Fellows, 40, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at his home in Cody.
