BUFFALO, Wyo. - Jay Walker, 76, of Buffalo, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at the Johnson County Health Center.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo, with private family interment to be held at a later date.
Cecil Tom Day
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Cecil Tom Day, 67, Sheridan, Wyo., died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at his home.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at the First Christian Church.
A reception will follow at the Big Horn Mountain Eagles Club.
Ferries Funeral Home is in charge.
Pauline Blue Deem
PLENTYWOOD - Pauline Blue Deem died June 29 at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home, Plentywood, of cancer.
She was born near Derby, Iowa, on Oct. 21, 1916, to Ben and Ora (Taylor) Blue. The family moved to Montana and made Billings their home.
She was a 1935 graduate of Billings H.S. and after attending Eastern she taught rural schools for seven years before earning a degree in extension home economics at MSC Bozeman.
She was Sheridan County extension agent for 31 years and was very proud and felt joy in the accomplishments of many 4-H members.
She held offices in the National Association of Extension Home Economists and served a term as editor of their National Newsletter.
She was secretary for both Daybreak I & II and the Plentywood Chairman for DB II.
After retiring from the Extension Service in 1980 she continued to work as secretary-manager of the Sheridan County Fair for nine years.
Her awards included Sheridan County Friend of 4-H in 1987 and was a 1994 Montana 4-H Alumni State Winner.
She was also named a Professor Emeritus of Montana State University.
A member of First Congregational Church, she was also active in community groups and fraternal organizations which included The Order of the Eastern Star in which she served five terms as Worthy Matron. She served also on the Council of The Order of Rainbow for Girls.
Freelance writing was a primary interest and she worked as a correspondent with the Billings Gazette into May 1998.
Other interests involved crocheting, sewing and her pet cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother who died as a child.
She is survived by Glyn, her husband of 44 years, and one sister, Bonnie (Bill) Broderdorp of Wasilla, Alaska, and some cousins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 2, at First Congregational Church, U.C.C., Plentywood, Pastor Martin Strom officiating.
Interment will be in the Medicine Lake cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home, Plentywood has charge of arrangements.
Pauline enjoyed many gifts of flowers while hospitalized and it is therefore suggested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Montana 4-H Foundation, Sheridan Health Care Foundation or the charity of your choice.
Deborah Ann (Roach) Hofacker
BOISE, Idaho - Deborah Ann (Roach) Hofacker, 28, of Boise, passed away at Benefis West Hospital in Great Falls, Mont., Thursday, June 25.
Debbie was in Great Falls visiting her parents.
Born Sept. 12, 1969, in Great Falls to Bob and JoAnn Roach, graduated from Great Falls High School and went on to receive a bachelor degree in elementary education from Montana State University in 1994.
Debbie married
David M. Hofacker of Butte, Mont., son of Mike and Margaret Hofacker, on May 28, 1994, and the couple later moved to Boise where she was employed as a teacher at William H. Taft and Pierce Park elementary schools in the Boise School District.
Debbie is survived by her husband, David; parents, Bob and JoAnn; brother, Tom of Spokane, Wash.; and grandparents, Jim and Jackie McDonald of Geyser, Mont.
Services were held in Great Falls on Monday, June 29, at Holy Family Church.
Debbie touched the lives of so many people. She will be dearly missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
Harold F. Kern
Harold F. Kern passed away June 28, 1998, at Evergreen Billings. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Lisbon, N.D., to Fred and Mary Kern.
He loved working outdoors and always dreamed of having a farm. He drove for many trucking companies before retirement.
He married
Irene (Tess) Berkey on Dec. 15, 1970. He enjoyed his family and many grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Irene (Tess); a daughter, Georgia of California; his mother, Mary Smith of Gering, Neb.; brother, Don Kern of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister, Jeannie Leach of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and two grandchildren; stepchildren, Toni Swanson of Anchorage, Alaska, Duane Cinnamon of Salem, Ore., Kelly Cole and Bo Lyon of Colstrip, Danielle Liming and Dan Cinnamon of Billings; and 40 step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred; sisters, Ruth, Leona and Esther; stepsons, Kerry Cinnamon and Taryn Berkey Cinnamon.
We love you and will miss you Grandpa, may you rest in peace and the Lord be with you.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, Alderson Chapel.

Edith C. (Downer) Lane
Edith C. (Downer) Lane passed away Sunday morning, June 28, 1998, at the Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. She lived for 84 years, the first six being in a log cabin on the family homestead.
Edith was born Oct. 6, 1913, at Great Falls, the firstborn of Byron and Elizabeth (Pelot) Downer. She grew up on the homestead in the wheat basin area near Molt, attending school at Lakeview and graduating from Broadview High School. She attended Normal College, today's Rocky Mountain College, and on Aug. 27, 1933, married
Orville Lane in Red Lodge. Edith and Orville lived on the farm and ranch they started for 65 years.
In her younger years Edith enjoyed horseback riding and time spent fishing, and loved cats and dogs throughout her life. She was a member and Past Matron of Bitterroot Chapter 96 of Rapelje and affiliated with Billings Friendship Chapter 124, as well as an active member of the Molt Extension Homemakers and the Molt Congregational Church.
Survivors include her son, Lee and wife, Susan of Molt; three grandchildren, Tyler Lane and wife, Kim of Molt, Cam Johnson and husband, Jeremie of Coatesville, Ind., and Calvin Lane and wife, Mylo of Molt; one great-granddaughter, Brynlie Lane; two brothers, Arthur Downer and wife, Marie of Molt, and S.T. Downer and wife, Adah of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; brother, Robert; and her parents, Byron and Bess.
Visitations will begin Tuesday at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at the Smith West Chapel with interment to follow at Mountview cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Congregational Church, Fire Department, or Community Center in Molt.
Boyd Sawyer Mills
TEN SLEEP, Wyo. - Boyd Sawyer Mills, 65, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at his home in Ten Sleep.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, at the Ten Sleep LDS Church with interment in the Ten Sleep cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time in the Relief Society room at the church.
Bryant Funeral Home of Worland is in charge.
Alice Opland
Alice Opland, 90, passed away Sunday evening, June 28, 1998, at the Aspen Meadows Retirement Community. She was born Sept. 29, 1907, in Big Timber to Jack and Sarah Watt. Her mother died when Alice was just 4 years old and she was raised and cared for by her maternal grandmother, Alma Cross.
She attended Big Timber schools and worked in the Sweet Grass County High School office following graduation in 1925. She later attended the Billings Regional Normal School and then taught for several years in rural Sweet Grass County schools.
She married
Gilbert Opland, Nov. 4, 1931, and they moved to the Opland ranch in the Gibson community. They lived there until Gilbert passed away in 1969. Then Alice sold the ranch to her daughter, June, and her husband, Tom Kalberg, and moved to Big Timber.
Alice loved raising beautiful flowers which were enjoyed by all who saw them. Many happy hours were also spent playing Pinochle with friends at the Hospitality House and being with her family.
She moved to Billings Aspen Meadows Community in Billings in 1993 and resided there until her death.
She is survived by two daughters, June Kalberg of Billings and Nyla and Ben Berg of Big Timber; five grandchildren: Jodi and Calvin Christensen and their children, Ryan and Cali of Big Timber; Tim and Cheryl Kalberg of Beaverton, Ore.; Ross and Colleen Berg and daughter, Lindsey Schell of Billings; Jess Berg of Big Timber; Kristi and Dan Fischer of Lakeside.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Big Timber Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Holmlund officiating the services. Interment will take place in Mountain View cemetery, Big Timber. Lowry Funeral Home arranged the services.
Mable E. Redfield
HELENA - Mable E. Redfield, 91, of 1701 Prospect, passed away unexpectedly early Saturday at Saint Peter's Hospital.
She was born into a family of 11 children, April 14, 1907, on a farm near Wolbach, Neb., to the late William H. and Mary Louise (Guy) Young.
Mabel came to Montana when she was 6 years old to a homestead 32 miles northwest of Roundup, which was later known as Flat. She began her schooling at the Pole Creek School for two years and Flat School for six years and also attended Roundup High School.
She married
Zell A. Redfield on Oct. 17, 1925, and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1973.
She worked for the Billings Postal Department for 20 years. While Mable was busy working and tending to her family she belonged to the Billings Garden Club, Judith Gap Garden Club and The Helena Garden Club. She was a member of the Montana State Association of Garden Clubs. She served as State Recording Secretary under State Presidents Sue Lamb of Billings and Margaret Yaw of Bozeman. She also served as the Junior Garden Club Chairman for six years, and served as District Director of District #4 for several years. She was active with the Montana China Painting Association and the Helena China Painters. She was a member of Heritage Soroptimist Club of Helena, a volunteer for Westmont of Helena, and served as the first President of Westmont Auxiliary.
Mabel lived in Boulder for many years where she was active in Boulder United Methodist Church, Boulder Senior Citizens. In 1985, she became a Council person for the City of Boulder filling Wade Lewis' unexpired term. In 1987, she was elected to the same office and became the first woman to join the Boulder Volunteer Fire Department. She retired from the commission in 1998.
Mabel enjoyed teaching young children about gardening and china painting, as well as other crafts such as crocheting and knitting.
Survivors include her children, Pearl R. Scott, Walter E. Redfield and Mignon L. Waterman, Darrell R. Young and Ronald L. Redfield; one brother, Guy R. Young; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Church services will be Friday, July 3, 1998, 10 a.m. from Saint Paul's United Methodist Church. Interment Services will follow at 4 p.m. at the Roundup City cemetery, Roundup. Family prefers memorials to the Boulder Library, 202 S. Main, Boulder, MT or to the Helena Garden Club, c/o Eva Swanson, 716 Touch Tone, Helena, MT 59601. Hagler-Anderson Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.
Betty von Borstel
LIVINGSTON - Betty von Borstel, 63, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Livingston Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Sacajawea Park in Livingston. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Livingston is in charge.
Herbert F. Stenberg
Herbert F. "Herb" Stenberg, 60, of Billings, passed away Thursday evening, July 2, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, his mother, a daughter and son-in-law, three brothers and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Heights Chapel. A vigil service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Bernard's Parish. The casket will be open for the vigil service. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's Parish with Rite of Committal in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Heights Chapel has charge of arrangements.
