Clifford John Kallevig
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Clifford John Kallevig, 85, Sidney, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 1998, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Sidney, with Pastor Kent Stenzel officiating. Music will be provided by: Mary Pfau and Janice Peplow. Casketbearers will be: Vance Johnson, Garth Kallevig, Brent Kallevig, John Jones, Joe Felan, and Rod Kalberer. Ushers will be: Dale Andreason and Art Zeiszler. Interment will be in the Richland Memorial Park, Sidney, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church, MonDak Heritage Center, or to the charity of one's choice.
Clifford John Kallevig was born at New Rockford, N.D., Dec. 17, 1912, to John and Julia (Curtis) Kallevig. In 1919, the family homesteaded in the Mona Community in Richland County. The family moved to First Hay Creek, near Fairview, in 1928, then later to Sidney. Cliff attended schools at Mona and Fairview. During his younger years he worked as a ranch hand and at the sugar beet factory in Sidney. Later, he drove truck, transporting beef to the Fort Peck Dam Project and worked construction on the Beartooth Highway. He served stateside in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Vivian (Strobeck), June 1, 1940. They farmed a short time in Stanley, N.D., before returning to Sidney. Cliff started Kallevig Brothers Excavation, working throughout western North Dakota and eastern Montana, during his long career. Cliff was active in the Sidney Saddle Club for many years and loved horse racing. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Cliff died Sunday, July 19, 1998, of a heart attack at his home, Sidney.
Cliff is survived by sons: Jerome, Bakersfield, Calif., Kendal (Rebecca), Sidney, Randel, Sidney, Noel, Sheridan, Wyo., and a daughter, Julie Kraenzel, Billings, and 15 grandchildren. Also surviving him are brothers and sisters, Leonard (Martha) Kallevig, Roy (Gloria) Kallevig, Shirley Martini, Mabel Jones and Hazel Banta of Sidney; Doris (Adrian) Ehlke, Port Angeles, Wash., Pearl Boland, Tacoma, Wash., and Phyllis (Wes) Smith, Sheridan, Wyo., sisters-in-law Annie (Chet) Kallevig, Fromberg, Del (Levern) Kallevig, Sidney, and Ruth Drury, Stanley, N.D.
Cliff is preceded in death by his wife, Vivian; his parents, John and Julia; sisters, Vera and Gladys; brothers, Chet and Levern; and daughter-in-law, Karen Kallevig.
Leonard Mattheis
LIBBY - Leonard Mattheis, 76, of Libby died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at St. John Lutheran Hospital in Libby. He was born at Beulah, N.D., on April 8. 1922, the son of Gottlieb and Antonia Mattheis. He was raised and educated in North Dakota, later serving with the United States Army during World War II.
Throughout his adult life he had worked as a heavy equipment operator in construction. He had resided out of Billings while working on construction jobs throughout the United States. He came to Libby in 1966 to work on the Libby Dam and, following it's completion, worked throughout the area in road construction until his retirement. He had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
Survivors include his wife Hildegard of Libby; two daughters, Carolyn Sealey of Roundup, and Mary Gelok of Platteville, Colo.; a son, Donald Staunton of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sisters, Hattie of Tacoma, Wash. and Ruth of Yakima, Wash.; and a brother, Irvin of Olympia, Wash.; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at the Roundup City cemetery. Wier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Agnes M. Otis
SILESIA - Agnes M. Otis, 75, of Silesia died July 21, 1998, at Valley Health Care Center with her family by her side.
Agnes was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Billings to Helen and E.M. "Clyde" McDowell. She attended grade school in Silesia and graduated from Edgar High School in 1941. She married
Paul G. Otis of Silesia, Nov. 3, 1945.
Agnes was a member of Joliet Senior Citizens, XYZer's Kitchen Band and Rockvale Women's Club. She loved music and spending time with her grandchildren and family gatherings.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bruce; and two sons, Artie and Lee.
She is survived by her husband, Paul of Silesia; two sons, Duane of Great Falls, Don of Missoula; two daughters, Sue Krone of Billings, Carol McDonald of Park City; grandchildren, Shawnda Musgrave, Randy and Pat Otis, Leslie McDonald, Jason, Janeen, Juanita, Sam and Bryan Krone, Laurie, Daniel and Cody Otis, Shelly Piltz, Brandon Otis and Jodie Hartman; a sister, Corina Slater of Laurel; a brother, Jay McDowell of Billings; a lifelong friend, Iggie Messer; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 1998, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel with interment in Rockvale cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice or Joliet Senior Citizens Center.
John B. Phelps Jr.
RAPID CITY, S.D. - John B. Phelps, Jr., 65, Rapid City, died at his home Sunday, July 19, 1998 after an eight month battle with brain cancer.
He was born at Billings, May 27, 1933, to John E. and Bernice "Bonnie" (Kyle) Phelps. They moved to Sheridan, Wyo., in 1939, but returned to Billings in 1948. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1952, and attended Montana State University in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army, which included a one year tour of duty in Germany. After returning from the service, he attended Eastern Montana College in Billings for two years.
John worked for several years selling surgical and hospital supplies. It was during this time that he married
Patricia A. Shaw in November of 1958. While continuing to work as a salesman, he founded his own business, E & J Specialties, in April of 1963, with his life long friend, Everett Athow. John soon dedicated all his efforts into making his company the success it is today.
John was a lifetime member of the Democratic Party. He served as Pennington County chairman for several years, and state party treasurer during the Kneip administration. He also served on the S.D. Cement Plant Commission, Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Board, Western Dakota Vo-Tech School Board, and was a member of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce.
John enjoyed and supported the Rapid City Thrillers and Black Hills Posse basketball teams, and was a very loyal Denver Bronco fan. He had a love of all animals, and was a lifetime member of the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
Survivors include his wife, Patty, Rapid City; four children, Rick Phelps and his wife, Charlene, Rapid City, Jani Young, Oklahoma City, Okla.; John Douglas Phelps and his wife, Terri, Rapid City; Bonnie Warren and her husband, Brent, Rapid City; six grandchildren, Ryan, Jeremiah, Nicole, Evan, John Thomas, and Mason; He is also survived by a very special aunt, Jeanne Smith, Casper, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 23 at the Canyon Lake Methodist Church, with Rev. Bob Rucdebusch officiating. Interment will be at Mt. View cemetery.
The fatuity requests, in place of flowers, memorials be given to the Humane Society of the Black Hills Building Fund or the Jon Dean Trupe Leukemia Fund.
Robert 'Rob' Reuter
WOLF POINT - Robert "Rob" Reuter was born May 14, 1923, to Lawrence and Christine (Leifeld) Reuter on a farm near Medicine Lake. He passed away in Duluth, Minn., of a head injury due to a fall while visiting his daughter, Connie, on July 19.
He graduated from Medicine Lake High School and Eastern Montana College of Education in Billings. Robert taught elementary students in Dagmar, Froid and Wolf Point, retiring in 1980 after 35 years in the profession. In 1993, he retired from the Montana State Department of Agriculture as a hail adjuster after 38 years.
On Aug. 15, 1949, he married
Ardeline Nelson at Medicine Lake. He and Ardie enjoyed several years of travel by bus, train, and car. Family gatherings, company, card games and short trips with family and friends were a special part of his life.
Rob is survived by his wife, Ardie of Wolf Point; daughters, Connie Reuter of Superior, Wis. and Carolee Ruter of Great Falls; numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends. Robert was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers.
Rob was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 47 years, Elks Lodge 1764 and a past member of the Montana Education Association.
Visitations will be held on Friday at Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a vigil service at 5 p.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 998 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wolf Point with Father Steve Zabrocki officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Joseph Charles Strachan
Joseph Charles Strachan, one of the "good ol' boys," passed away in Billings on Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the age of 58.
Survivors include his beloved daughter, Sky Strachan of Arizona; his brother, Michael Strachan of Colorado; his dearest friend, Alice Hoerster of Billings and her sons, Joe of Billings and Tom of Vandalia. Along with these Joe will be missed by the Irvin Hoerster and the Martin Hoerster families of Billings, the Wing family of Glasgow, the Niel Ellsworth family of Colorado and the Smitty Smith family of Sidney. "Adios, dear friend."
Visitations will begin Thursday morning. Friends and family will gather at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24, at the Smith Downtown Chapel to proceed to Riverside cemetery for a 1 p.m. graveside service. Smith Downtown Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Harley O. 'Buster' Sundquist
SHAWMUT - Harley O. "Buster" Sundquist, 65, of Shawmut died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.
He was born Nov. 23, 1932, in Wilton. N.D., the son of Henry L. and Edith (Keator) Sundquist. He was raised and educated in the Wilton area and following graduation entered the U. S. Army where he served from July 1953 to June 1955.
He returned to Bismarck, N.D., and became a pressman for the Bismarck Tribune.
On Jan. 14, 1956, he married
Dolores Wall in Bismarck. They moved to Billings in 1965 and Buster worked as a pressman at Empire Printing, Billings Times, Artcraft Printers and retired from Trott Printing. In 1988, he and his wife retired to Deadman's Basin near Shawmut,.
Buster was a member of the American Legion Post 4 in Billings for 39 years. He loved to hunt, fish and ranch.
Survivors include his wife Delores; his son and wife, Randal M. and Laura Sundquist of Nine Mile Falls, Wash.; and his daughter, Wanda R. Dietz of Casper, Wyo.; his brother Henry Sundquist of Phoenix; and his sisters, Lucille Speten and husband Rudy of Wilton, N.D. and Bernice Johnson and husband, Gordon of Minot, N.D.; numerous nieces and nephews
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday. July 23, at the Smith West Chapel. Cremation has taken place with interment of cremains at Mountview cemetery with military rites.
Leola Pendelton Allen
LOVELL, Wyo. - Leola Pendelton Allen died July 17, 1998, at North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell from natural causes.
Leola was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Lovell, to Frank C. and Clara McArthur Pendelton.
She attended school in Lovell and graduated in 1938. She attended BYU and earned her degree in teaching.
On Apri1 24, 1944, Leola married
Lloyd V. Allen in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. To this union was born three sons, James Willard, Frank Chase and Rex P. Allen.
In the fall of 1946, Leola started her teaching career in Cowley. She then moved to Byron where she retired in 1984. Leola and her son, Rex, moved to Provo, Utah, returned to Lovell in the summer of 1985 where they lived till Leola's death.
Services for Leola will be Thursday, July 23, 1998, at 10 a.m. in the Lovell LDS East Chapel. Friends and family are invited to visit on Wednesday, July 22, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Haskell Funeral Home, 459 Nevada Ave. in Lovell.
Helene Barnett
Helene Barnett, 103, of Billings, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at the Valley Nursing Home, after suffering a stroke two weeks ago.
Helene was born in Rogers, Texas, July 27, 1894, the fifth child in a family of 12. At the age of 7, she moved with her family to North Dakota, where the family homesteaded She graduated from high school in 1912 and began her teaching career in a rural school in Fessenden, N.D. After two years of teaching, Helene had saved enough money to go to college and graduated in 1917 from North Dakota State University in Fargo, where she studied home economics. Her first teaching job was in Leeds, N.D., teaching general science and home economics.
In the fall of 1918, Helene accepted a teaching position in Hardin. It was there she met and married
Harvey Barnett on July 21, 1919. They lived and farmed in the Hardin area for many years. Mr. Barnett passed away in 1970.
In 1943, after successfully raising her family, Helene began working for New York Life Insurance Company. In 1948, she returned to teaching and taught science, shorthand and drama in the Lodge Grass High School. In 1950, she accepted a teaching position in the Huntley Project High School and taught home economics and German for 14 years, until she was forced to retire upon reaching the age of 70. Undaunted by her retirement, she continued to teach and substituted in the Hardin High School and taught German for Adult Education. Helene moved to Billings in 1972, where she again pursued her passion for teaching, substituting in the Billings schools. She also continued to teach and tutor German, not only at Eastern Montana College, but also with the Adult Education Program.
Helene was always very interested in education, nutrition, agriculture, religion, politics and finance and never hesitated to expound upon those subjects with her friends and family. She attributed her long life to her healthy eating habits and lifestyle and encouraged others to follow her examples. She also encouraged her family and friends to get a good education - telling them it would pay them back many times over. Helene set and followed her own example by returning to school in later years, and, at the age of 65, she earned her master's degree in home economics from Montana State University in Bozeman and continued to study German, chemistry and Spanish. She was a lifetime member of Jasmine Chapter #65 Order of Eastern Star, Hardin, and the Montana Retired Teacher's Association. Helene was very proud of being the oldest resident at Westpark Village retirement home, where she resided from 1990 until her illness. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who have been blessed to have her for so many years.
Survivors include her son, Byron and wife, Vickie of New Hampshire; daughter, Jean and husband, Luther Wise of Billings, and daughter, Virginia and husband, Wilson Richards of Gilt Edge Route (Lewistown); six grandchildren, Jim (Diane) Wise of Billings, Bette Jean (Larry) Pederson of Missoula, Janet (Chuck) Nolte of Bothel, Wash., Susan (Stuart) Walker of Seattle, Wash., Teresa (Steve) Woodburn of Vancouver, Wash., Denver Barnett of Connecticut; 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Memorial Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Westpark Village, 2351 Solomon Ave., Billings. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the HELENE BARNETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND for the benefit of graduating seniors from the Huntley Project High School, P.O. Box 80062, Billings, MT 59108 or to the charity of one's choice.
Betty Berryman
POWELL, Wyo. - Betty Berryman, 68, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Powell Hospital.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at the Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the Hope Lutheran Church in Powell, with interment at the Crown Hill cemetery.

BYRON, Wyo. - Irene Marie Elder, 77, of Byron, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at the West Park Hospital in Cody of lung disease.
Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Byron cemetery. Ballard Funeral Home of Cody is in charge.

THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. - Annie "Irene" Harbour, 88, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Canyon Hills Manor in Thermopolis of natural causes.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Monument Hill cemetery in Thermopolis. Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis is in charge.

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Richard Wayne Hartman, 74, formerly of Billings, Mont., died Monday, July 20, 1998, at his home in Burlington of cancer.
Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington. Family visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at the chapel with interment in the Aspen Grove cemetery in Burlington.

BUFFALO, Wyo. - Delbert Lee Hollcroft, 84, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at his home in Buffalo.
Visitation will be 3-10 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at the funeral home chapel with interment in the Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo.
