James Whitcomb Reineking Sr.
James Whitcomb Reineking Sr., 82 of Billings, passed on Thursday morning, July 23, 1998, while on a trip to Grand Rapids, Mich., for a national York Rite conclave. J.W. was born on Nov. 2, 1915, in Williston, N.D. He was raised in Harvey, N.D., by his parents, Elta and Gustave.
At an early age, he developed an interest in firearms and apprenticed under a German gunsmith. Prior to WWII, he attended Sperry Tech in New York City to further his education in weapons. During WWII he worked at Rock Island (Ill.) Arsenal and various bases located in the South as a civil servant.

J.W. met and married his first wife, Carol, and had his first son, James Jr. While stationed in the South, he met his lifelong friends, Bill and Blue Rodier. In 1946, the family moved to Billings, and opened Reineking Gun Shop. The Rodiers followed shortly afterwards and Bill was J.W.' s partner for period of time.

In 1947, Vera Mae Cable moved from Iowa to Billings to start her lifelong nursing career at Saint Vincent Hospital. While courting, J.W. and Vera were told "If you get your feet wet in the Yellowstone River, you will never leave Montana." Vera Mae and J.W. were married in April of 1949 in Iowa and as predicted, returned to Billings. J.W. and Vera were blessed with four sons: James Whitcomb Jr., Kim Jay, Jon Kevin, and Jeff Edward. Together they enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and hiking. J.W. taught his family to love and respect the bounty of Montana.

Reineking Gun Shop was originally located at 10 North 31st St. in downtown Billings. In 1950, the business expanded and moved to 518 St. Johns Avenue. The new location provided an indoor shooting range, a full machine shop and expanded retail services to include all of his interests. In 1963, the business relocated to 2300 Grand Avenue where it remained in operation until his retirement in 1979. During his career, he was a master gunsmith, recognized in a multi-state region. He designed and produced one of a kind weapons.

J. W. ' s Masonic affiliations began in 1965. He is currently a member of Lavina Temple Lodge 101, Aldemar Commandery number 5, Royal Arch Masons-Billings number 6, Adoniram number 8, Scottish Rite, Moss Agate Chapter OES 126, and the Al Bedoo Shrine. During these years, he was Worthy Patron five times, Master of his Lodge, Cymbal Player for the World Champion Oriental Band, and served in many other capacities. This led to his term as Right Eminent Grand Commander of the State of Montana, 1991-92. His zest for masonry occupied a major portion of his life.

J. W. was a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ since 1948. He was a volunteer at St. Vincent Hospital for many years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club with his wife, and also sang in the Kiwanichords. He volunteered his time at the Scottish Rite Learning Center. He was also a member of the BPOE Lodge 394. J.W. was also available for anyone at anytime who needed anything, and Aunt Bea says, "This is the truth!"

J.W. enjoyed "life." His lifelong hobbies were hunting, fishing and dancing the night away with his wife. He was an accomplished marksman. To fill the void between seasons, he developed many other passions. While one year it was boats, the next could be go-carts, or motorcycles, or automobiles. J.W. loved anything that ran on gasoline. He also tinkered with ham radios and electronics. He believed in "more power" before Tim the Tool man Taylor was ever around. When the gas or ammunition ran out, he would read books on any subject.

The pride of J.W.'s life was his family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Vera; his sons and their families; James Jr. and Regina, son Julian; Kim and Ruth; Jon and Glenda, daughter Jenna and son, Evan; Jeff and Patricia, daughter Lauren.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, at the First Congregational Church of Christ located at 310 N. 27th St. in Billings. Memorials may be made to: Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Clinic, 514 14th St. W., Billings, Mont. 59102, or the Billings Masonic Center, Charitable Fund, 1101 Broadwater Avenue, Billings, Mont. 59102.
