Monte J. Shelton
SEATTLE, Wash. - Monte J. Shelton passed away on Monday, June 8, 1998, in Seattle. Monte was born in Libby, early morning on Aug. 27, 1956, being the first child of Joanna and Robert Shelton. Monte is survived by both parents and his maternal grandmother, Ruby Helen Wren, all of Tacoma; Willard Scott, his brother at Georgetown Lake; his sister, Suzane Delamater, together with her husband, Max and daughters Kristin and Ashley of Eugene Ore.
Monte grew up with his family in Missoula, attending Sentinel High School and graduating in 1974. Monte then attended Montana Tech where his favorite classes were in the Geology Department, he also attended chef school in San Francisco and England, working in that field for several years.
Monte learned to sail in 1990 and spent many happy days in Puget Sound and later on the ketch, Papillon, in the western Caribbean.
Monte had bouts of serious illness in 1997 and, after he recovered last winter, returned to Colon, Panama, on the Caribbean end of the canal to find that the Papillon had been stolen. Monte then spent the next several months in a quest for the missing Ketch, only recently returning to Tacoma. A log of this adventure reads like a fine mystery novel with high political intrigue and more than a glimpse of the residual corruption in the emerging country of Panama.
About two weeks ago his Colombian friend, Clacey called and reported that he had located Papillon on the Pacific end of the canal and Monte was looking forward to her recovery. (Monte was Godfather to Clacey's little newborn, baby boy, Claceto, and lovingly referred to him as "our baby.")
Monte's Parents want to thank the Captain and First Mate of the ferryboat, Rhododendron, for stopping mid-channel on the Vashon Island run on Saturday afternoon. The First Mate stood at attention during the brief ceremony conducted by his Father, Mother and friend, Tonya Baker, which consisted of this prayer and the Captain's salute of three blast of the horn signaling a departing vessel.
"Monte our son and friend we place a portion of your dust on these waters with the prayer that they will carry your spirit to all of the beautiful shores of this earth, and when your friends came down to the sea, chat they remember you and all the good men like you. May God speed your journey."
The family will have a service at the Whitesett Chapel in Stevensville on Thursday the 18th of June, at 2 p.m. and invite all to attend. Monte's remaining dust will be placed along side his Grandfather, Lonnie Wren who preceded him in death.
Monte was always generous, especially to the poor and downtrodden he met in his world travels arid we urge you to remember him by doing likewise. The last two years when Monte was home he would accompany his Mother to yard sales on Fox Island and Gig Harbor specifically to find and purchase clothes, shoes and toys for the Cuna Indian children that he had met in Colon. He admired and loved these people with their tightly knit, extended families, from the San Blas Islands on the south coast of Panama on the Caribbean side.
Please remember Monte with laughter and love-picture him - His tall frame and long gait with the diminutive Cuna children skipping along, hanging on to each large hand with the smaller ones in tow by his shin tail, each protecting the other by their mere presence, and God all, in the dangerous streets of Colon.
