Ray Sandbak
BROADVIEW - Raymond Albert Sandbak of Broadview passed away June 26, 1998. He was born June 8, 1911, the first male child in Broadview, to Hilma and Otto Sandbak.
He graduated from Broadview High School in 1931, after which he was employed by the Occidental Elevator.
Ray was called to serve his country in the 115th Cavalry, U.S. Army, for three years in World War II, after which he returned to the family farm. He married Louise Johnson in 1949 and they made their home on the family ranch.
He enjoyed many travels all over the nation and spent winters in California. The high spot of his travels was to Norway and Sweden to rediscover his heritage. Playing the organ was his joy!
He served on the ASCS Commission, and as a Musselshell County Commissioner for 8 years. Ray was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Rapelje; a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite, Billings; a member of the Broadview Lions Club, a charter member of the Broadview Senior Center and a member of Pine Ridge Golf Club, Roundup.
He is survived by his wife, Louise; and two adopted sons, Russell and Jackie of Yulee, Fla., and Allen and Suzi of Billings; three grandchildren, Brandon Sandbak of Billings, Darcy Fryett of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Lana Forrest of Yulee, Fla.; and one great-grandson, Bryce Sandbak; four sisters, Lovey Conover of Broadview, Lois Feldman, Verda Wyman and Hertha Lynch, all of Billings.
Memorial services will be held at the Broadview Community Center at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30. Cremation has taken place. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Broadview Senior Center, c/o Ralph Brewington, Broadview, Mont.

Inez Evelyn Woodhouse
HELENA - Inez Evelyn Woodhouse was born on April 4, 1912, to Edmund and Margaret Parker in Wibaux on the family homestead. She graduated from Wibaux County High School in 1930. On May 15, 1943, she married Roland Woodhouse, also of Wibaux They raised Hereford cattle there until 1956, when they moved to a ranch west of Big Timber along the Yellowstone River. The couple moved to Helena in 1987, to be near two of their daughters.
Evelyn Woodhouse raised five daughters - Joyce Woodhouse, Frances Guthridge, Cheryl Duncan, Berdine Leuwer, and Claudia Howard with the goal that they all received a college education. Over the years, she sewed and ironed countless skirts, shorts, and twirling outfits. Many backbreaking hours were spent in her giant gardens in order to provide fresh vegetables for the family.
When she was not sewing, she was cooking. Her cooking skills were legendary, especially the chili and fried chicken she provided for the branding crews. She provided her daughters an example of hard work, determination, honesty, religion, and was a true lady.
Evelyn Woodhouse is remembered for her participation in the Kill Kare Klub, WillItGrow Garden Club, Golden Age Warblers, where she played the washboard, 20 years as a General Leader and a Project Leader for 4-H Clubs, St. Joseph's Catholic Church Altar Society where her pie baking skills were highly prized, and the Big Timber Senior Citizen's Hospitality House. When her daughters graduated from school, her participation continued. She enjoyed attending all Sweet Grass High School concerts and basketball games, and later, watching UNLV basketball on television. She enjoyed hours of crocheting, and the recipients of her afghans will attest to her talent.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Woodhouse; brothers, Lester, LaMonte, Merlin, Gene, and Russell Parker; and sister, Dorothy Miller. She is survived by a brother, Cyril Parker; and her five daughters and grandchildren, Aidan and Kiele Guthridge, Jeff and Amy Duncan, Mikale and Jonathan Leuwer, and Kyle and Shane Howard.
At age 86, Evelyn Woodhouse passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Berdine and Gene Leuwer. Vigil will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Big Timber on Monday, June 29, at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 30, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Big Timber Hospitality House or the personal choice of the donor. Retz Funeral Home in Helena is in charge of arrangements.

Summer Alanis Yarlott
ASHLAND - Summer Alanis Yarlott, unborn daughter of Curtis and Sally Yarlott, left this world to be with the Lord on June 27, 1998.
She leaves behind her parents; and one brother, Victor Hayden, of the family home in Ashland; her paternal grandparents, David and Jae Bok Yarlott Sr., of Benteen; her maternal grandparents, Russel Bowen and Deloris Tipton, both of Bainbridge, Georgia; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in Montana and Georgia.
Private graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Hardin Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Frances D. Naylor
COLUMBUS - Frances D. Nayor, 82, of Columbus, passed away Friday, June 26, 1998, at the Stillwater Convalescent Center.
Visitations may be made at the Smith Downtown Chapel on Monday evening. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Sunset Hill cemetery in Bozeman.

Henry E. Gomer
LAUREL - Henry E. Gomer, 93, of Laurel, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at the Evergreen Care Center at Laurel, Mont. Mr. Gomer was born March 19, 1905, at New Denhof Russia. He came to this country in 1906, landing in Galveston, Texas. His family worked in the sugar beet fields of Colorado, before coming to Montana. Henry worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, first as a section worker and later as a switchman. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1972, after 47 years of service.
On July 1, 1928, Henry married Mollie Krug. As the family grew, he continued to add on to the house he had built. He and Mollie celebrated 62 years together before she died in 1990. They had five children, Alvin, who died in 1996, Dorothy Rodreick (Perry) of Laurel, Mont., Virginia Gomer of Salem, Ore., Richard Gomer (Gail) of Oviedo, Fla., Kenneth Gomer (Sandy) of Bridger, Mont.; four grandsons, Scott, with the Air Force in Universal City, Texas, Kurt, of Post Falls, Idaho, Joel of St. Cloud, Fla., Joshua, with the Marine Corps in Hawaii, seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Herman Gomer of Billings.
Mr. Gomer was a long-time, active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Laurel. He did a variety of construction jobs in his younger years, and after retiring, spent many hours in his workshop. He served on the Laurel City Council at two different times. He was a member of Laurel Senior Citizens, as well as the VIP group, for his volunteer work at the Center. He also belonged to the Retired Rails.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Laurel. Memorials may be made to the Laurel Ambulance Fund. Interment will be in the Laurel cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel - Laurel was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Carol Smith
MALTA - Betty Carol Smith, 74, of Malta, passed away Sunday, June 21, 1998, in Laveen, Ariz.
Memorial services will be Monday, June 29, in the Little White Church in Malta.

Marjorie M. Simpson
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Marjorie M. Simpson, 80, passed away Thursday, June 25, 1998, at her home in Gillette after a long illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28, in the Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 29, in the Riverside cemetery in Cody, Wyo.

Richard 'Dick' Owens
Richard "Dick" Owens passed away Friday morning, June 26, 1998, at his home following a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Mr. Owens had lived for 78 years.
He was born in Billings on Dec. 28, 1919, the son of Winfield and Theresa Owens and attended school at McKinley, Jefferson and Billings Senior High School, graduating in 1938. The only time this lifelong Billings resident spent away from home was during World War II when he served in the U.S. Navy. On Feb. 14, 1949, he married Darlene M. Clark in Casper, Wyo. Mr. Owens worked as a carpenter, lapidarist, bookkeeper, and for 10 years as a dispatcher for the Billings Fire Department before his retirement in 1984.
Throughout his life he was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. In his retirement years Mr. Owens worked hard for more than 10 years on a geneolgy project, tracing his family's roots back many generations to their origin in England and France.
Dick is survived by his wife of 49 years, Darlene; two daughters, Jean Owens of Billings and Jane Bickler of Laurel; three grandchildren, Cassandra, Cara, and CayLee Bickler of Laurel; and a sister, Marguerite "Marge" Williams of Billings.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 29 at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West with military honors and interment of the urn to follow at Mountview cemetery. Cremation has taken place.
Memorials are suggested to Big Sky Hospice; 3021 6th Ave. N.; Billings, Mont. 59101. Smith West Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Leslie J. Taggart Smith
CODY - Leslie Janet Taggart Smith passed away at the West Park Hospital in Cody on Friday, June 26, 1998, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 51 years old.
Born in Cody, Wyo., on Jan. 23, 1947, she was the daughter of Jesse McNiven and Janet Blackburn Taggart. The eldest of four children, she was raised on the Two Dot Ranch north of Cody until the family moved to their home on Allen Avenue in Cody during her high school years.
Leslie graduated from Cody High School In 1965, and later from Billings Business College. She attended Northwest College and Brigham Young University until her marriage to Donald E. Smith, Jr., in 1970. They had two children, both named after grandparents - Stephanie Janet, recently released missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Jeffrey Alan, a junior in college. Both lovingly attended their mother during her prolonged illness.
Gifted as a natural teacher, Leslie returned to college as a single mother to complete her degree in elementary education. Her years at Brigham Young University, with her two young children, were full of her favorite interests of music and sports, the study of western and Mormon history, and many new friendships. She was 41 years old when she graduated from college; and was then able to put her natural talents into play as a fifth-grade teacher at Eastside Elementary School In Cody.
Leslie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the youth organizations and women's auxiliary, loved to sing, serve and participate in all church functions. Leslie believed in community service, was especially interested in the West Park Hospital Auxiliary, Cody Stampede Parade Committee, and the Park County Republican Women. She enjoyed a wry humor, had a quick recall of people and was a keen student of human nature and chronicler of family and community history. She suffered her challenges and adversity - particularly her prolonged fatal illness, with a quiet grace and dignity.
An extraordinary friend, she gave as she received. Her unconditional love to family and friends will be part of her legacy. She was a remarkable mother, daughter, sister, niece, and grandmother. She was known for her warm hugs and sincere encouragement to children as she felt it important to help build their confidence and appreciate their self worth.
Leslie is survived by her two children, Stephanie and Jeffrey; her father, Mac Taggart; and brother, Jim Taggart, all of Cody; brother, Frank Taggart of Shepherd, Mont.; and sister, Gigi Taggart of Brussels, Belgium; and granddaughter Madeline Coe of Cody. She is also a favorite niece and cousin to a large extended family. Her mother, Janet Taggart, preceded her in death in 1995.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, at 10 a.m. in the Cody Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at Riverside cemetery In Cody. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Spirit Mountain Hospice, or a charity of choice.

Donald Eugene DeVore Jr.
Donald Eugene DeVore Jr., 42, died at his home in Billings on June 26, 1998, of natural causes.
Donald was born on May 1, 1956, in Grand Rapids, Mich., son of Donald Eugene DeVore and Frieda (Pelton) DeVore Kangas. He received his grade and high school education in Billings, and also attended Western College of Auctioneering. He received his Auctioneering License in 1977. He was a auctioneer and contractor up until the time of his death.
Donald was united in marriage to Mary Ramirez on Dec. 1, 1973, in Billings.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and horseback riding.
Don lived a very full and happy life with many friends and family who loved him. He will be very much missed, but always remembered.
Don is survived by his mother Freida Kangas of Raymond, Wash.; his wife Mary DeVore of Billings; his daughter Melissa DeVore of Billings; a sister, Kathy Allen of Kennewick, Wash.; and a brother Daniel DeVore of Coral, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his father in December 1972.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday July 1 at 11 a.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel with private family interment.

Ila Clark Tuttle
BASIN, Wyo. - Ila Clark Tuttle, 84, of Basin, passed away Saturday, June 27, 1998, at Bonnie Bluejacket Nursing Home.
Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc., of Basin was in charge of arrangements.

Martha E. Mance
RED LODGE - Martha E. Mance, 89, of Red Lodge, died peacefully on Friday, June 26, 1998, in Beartooth Hospital & Health Center.
Martha was born in Red Lodge on Jan. 22, 1909, a daughter of Solomon and Lissa Hamburg. She was raised in Red Lodge, and later on the family farm on Clear Creek.
On Jan. 1, 1930, she married John Evan Mance. They resided in Red Lodge, and were happily married for 36 years before Mr. Mance's death in 1966.
Martha took pride in homemaking, and she enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She loved the Beartooth Mountains, and was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include one son, John Norman Mance of Red Lodge; one daughter, Lorraine Gregory and her husband Earl of Red Lodge; one brother, Harold Hamburg of Roberts; two sisters, Lillian Pouttu of Smelterville, Idaho, and Elsie Kero of Conrad; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Cremation will follow services, and interment will be in the Red Lodge cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Beartooth Hospital & Health Center, Box 590, Red Lodge, Mont., or to the charity of one's choice.

Jennie V. Nepstad
NASHUA - Jennie V. Nepstad, 85, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, in Billings Deaconess Hospital of natural causes.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashua. Interment will be in Nashua City cemetery.

Christopher Ray Olson
MEDICINE LAKE - Funeral services for Christopher Ray Olson will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 30. Pastors Grant Patterson and Tim Hutslar will officiate at the service at the Medicine Lake High School; interment will be in Medicine Lake cemetery. Chris, 15, was killed in an automobile accident Thursday, June 25, 1998, near Medicine Lake.
Chris was born Sept. 23, 1982, at Plentywood, the son of Danny and MarShele (Engstrom) Olson. He has lived in the Medicine Lake community all his life; he would have been a sophomore at Medicine Lake High School this fall. Chris lived life to the fullest; from the time he learned to walk he was choosing his own direction, and was off and going - going, searching, learning all the time. He loved to joke, and had a smart answer for everything ... including why he was always late. Never a morning person, Chris liked to sleep late; he loved sports, and excelled at football, basketball, track and baseball; and was a honor roll student. For five years, he attended a week-long gifted student's summer institute at Carroll College in Helena, where he made many friends from all across the country. Usually with a pencil in his hand, he was also gifted as an artist, sketching basketball players, team logos, and Star Wars characters, and had recently started a sketch of Michael Jordan. He was baptized and confirmed at the Medicine Lake Lutheran Church. Certified as a lifeguard, he started work at the Medicine Lake Pool this summer.
Chris is survived by his father, Daniel Olson; his mother, MarShele, and her husband, Bryce Hancock, Jr., all of Medicine Lake. He is also survived by three brothers Dane and Mark, of Medicine Lake, and Allen, of Lake Alma Saskatchewan; and three sisters Rebekah, of Medicine Lake, Jodee, of Missoula, and Becky and her husband, Frank Laverell and their daughter Katie, of Big Timber. Chris' best friend is Jan Andring, of Medicine Lake. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Faye Loe, of Billings; his paternal great-grandparents, Thelma Olson, of McVille, N.D. and Inez Borgeson, of Farmington, Minn.; his maternal grandparents, Ronnie and Sharon Engstrom, of Plentywood; and by Doris Hancock, of Medicine Lake; and by his maternal great-grandmother, Martha Walling, of Williston. Chris was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert Olson; Bryce Hancock, Sr.; and an infant brother, James Thomas Hancock.
A scholarship fund in Chris' memory is being established at the Daniels-Sheridan Federal Credit Union in Medicine Lake; the family suggests that if people wish, donations there in lieu of flowers will be appreciated.

Garold E. Orr
EMBLEM, Wyo. - Garold E. Orr, 88, died Saturday, June 26, 1998, at the Powell Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at the Burlington LDS Chapel in Burlington, Wyo., with interment in the Crown Hill cemetery in Powell. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell is in charge.

Nicolas Howard Skillingberg
HOMESTEAD - A funeral service for Nicolas Howard Skillingberg will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 1998, at First Lutheran Church in Homestead. Pastor Grant Patterson will officiate and cremation will take place later. After 13 short years, Nicolas was taken from his family and friends in an automobile accident on his way to play in a Babe Ruth baseball tournament.
Nicolas was born Jan. 23, 1985, in Williston, N.D., the son of David and Dixie Skillingberg of Homestead. He enjoyed all sports, music and most of all, T.V.
He is survived by his parents, David and Dixie of Homestead, and two brothers, Mark of Seattle, Wash., and Eric of the family home. He is also survived by his grandparents, Howard and June Skillingberg, also of Homestead, and Maxine Brunsvold of Sidney. Anne Holly, his paternal great-grandmother, also survives, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard Brunsvold.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.
