Charles Edgar Lane Jr.
HELENA - Charles Edgar Lane Jr., 78, of Helena, formerly of Philipsburg, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at the Veterans Medical Center at Fort Harrison.
Chuck was born July 20, 1922, in Great Falls to Charles E. and Beryl (Oxley) Lane. He received his education at Great Falls High School, graduating in 1940. He continued his education at the College of Great Falls, graduating from there in 1947. Chuck served his country in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He and Frances E. Mellen were married
in Drummond on Aug. 9, 1945.
He taught high school at Drummond for two years before pursuing a career in ranching. Chuck was very active on the Granite County High School Board, plus the Granite County Soil Conservation Service and several other civic boards. He served as a director of the Flint Creek Valley Bank for many years.
He loved flying in his youth, and collecting and restoring classic cars up until his death. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Anaconda and helped charter the First Bank of Lincoln in the early 1960s.
His sister Beryl Garnett and parents preceded him in death. Surviving Chuck are his wife Frances of Helena; son and daughter-in-law James C. and Deanna Lane of Deer Lodge; son Robert J. Lane of Philipsburg; grandchildren Amy Mannix of Missoula; Mike Lane of Merced, Calif.; and Mac Lane of Fort Collins, Colo.; and great-grandchild Lane Ryan Mannix.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Philipsburg. Interment will follow at Philipsburg cemetery.
Memorials in Chuck's name are suggested to an organization of the donor's choice.

Claude Jackson 'Mac' McCarty
GREAT FALLS - Claude Jackson "Mac" McCarty, 77, of Great Falls, died after a long bout with cancer Sunday, Jan. 21, at Benefis East Hospital.
Survivors include his wife Elvira; mother Annie McCarty of Gaffney, S.C.; aunt Louise Smith of Batesburg, S.C.; brother-in-law Rayford Perdue; and niece Sandra Hambright and her family of Blacksburg, S.C.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home in Great Falls and Thursday evening at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Plentywood.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Chapel of Chimes. Burial with military rites will be 10 a.m. Friday at Nathanael Lutheran cemetery in Dagmar.
Rodney Miles Vannoy
GREENOUGH - Rodney Miles Vannoy, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2001, after a short illness. The most important things in Rodney's life were God, his family and friends, and the church he pastored.
A respected rancher and loving husband, father and grandfather, Rodney will be remembered for his love of the Lord, his wisdom, his smile and his boisterous laughter. He enjoyed working on his ranch and teaching his children and grandchildren how to ride, work cattle and work hard.
Born to Frank and Clara Vannoy in Jordan on Nov. 22, 1925, he moved with his family to the Blackfoot Valley when he was 9 years old. He attended school at Clearwater, Roosevelt and Missoula County High schools. Then Rodney joined the Army and proudly served his country during World War II from 1944 to 1946 in the 564th Battalion, 71st Division, in Rhineland, Central Europe. After the war Rodney returned to Montana, and with his brother Walter turned his love of hunting into a business, operating Vannoy Outfitters in the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
Rodney met (and frequently tied the shoes of) Patricia Nelson at the one-room grade school they attended at Clearwater. On June 19, 1948, he married
Patricia; they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. Soon after their marriage Rodney and Patricia purchased a ranch in the Blackfoot Valley, where Rodney ranched with his son Tom for more than 50 years.
He received numerous awards from local ranching and farming associations for his excellence in ranch management, including being named "Outstanding Cooperator - Conservation of Soil, Water and Related Resources" by the Missoula County Conservation District. Rodney served as an adviser to the Montana State University Agriculture Experiment Stations, and he was president of the Northwest County Farm Bureau from 1990 to 1995.
Rodney is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia, and his son and two daughters, Tom (Carol) Vannoy of Greenough, Susan (Neil) Boeh of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Gail Vannoy of Greenough. He is also survived by his brother Walter Vannoy; sister Greta Matusick; four grandsons; three granddaughters; 1 1/2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Murray.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Sunset School in Greenough.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Christian Life Center, 3801 Russell St., Missoula. Interment with military honors will be at Missoula City cemetery; a reception will follow.
Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home.
Patricia Ann Nelson
DARBY - Patricia Ann Nelson, 51 of Darby, passed away at her home on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001.
She was born Patricia Ann Brazil on June 25, 1949, in Watsonville, Calif., where she lived until she and her husband moved to the Bitterroot in November of 1991 or 1992. She came to know many people in her travels here. She worked several fire seasons with Big Sky Catering of Missoula and most recently at People's Market in Darby.
She found out about her lung cancer in October 2000 and fought bravely until she came to pass in her husband's arms on Feb. 22 at 5:17 a.m. A memorial service will be held in Watsonville with relatives and close friends.
For those who knew her here, please give a moment of silence and bid her farewell along with her beloved dog and best friend Wink, who died two days later.
Cremation has taken place under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel and Crematory in Hamilton.
Dewey Shandy
HELENA - Dewey "Dude" Shandy, 77, of Helena, died Feb. 25, 2001, from lung cancer at the Rocky Mountain Care Center.
Dewey was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Broadview. His family later moved to Joliet when he was a child; they were engaged in farming. He attended various rural schools in the Joliet area. As a young man he worked in the Billings area.
He was drafted into the Army during the Japanese occupation and recalled into the service in the Korean War. When discharged he moved to Lincoln in 1952. In Lincoln he worked as a logger for the Mixer Co. In 1953 he went to work for John A. Thompson & Son of Lincoln as a heavy equipment operator for their logging and mining operation. In 1981 Dewey went to work for Western Fuel Inc. as a fuel truck driver, a job he held until the time of this death.
Dewey married
Anita M. Thompson on Oct. 16, 1954, in Laurel. His hobbies were working and visiting with his customers and collecting "stuff."
Survivors include his wife Anita of Lincoln; daughter Cindy Simenson of Lincoln; three sisters, June Regnier of Billings, Nellie Witcher of Joliet and Helen Brown of Forsyth; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, "Grand-Dog" Missi, a constant companion.
Dewey will be missed by all his family and friends.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Lincoln Ambulance Service or the Parker Medical Center in Lincoln.

Dr. Richard Lee Huntsberger
Nov 10, 1947 - Feb. 22, 2001
STEVENSVILLE - Dr. Richard Lee Huntsberger, 53, of Stevensville, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001.
He had been practicing at "Back to Health Clinic" in Stevensville since January 1994, serving the community as a chiropractor. He was known for his gentle adjustments and individualized treatments, and will be greatly missed by all he served so diligently.
He is survived by Nan Raden, his devoted and loving life partner, and will be deeply missed. He is also survived by his mother Helen Yaw; sisters Penny Huntsberger and Keith Nichols and their children, and Linda and Bill Hillmar and children Jennifer and Greg; and brother Dave Huntsberger.
Also surviving are Eleanor and Harold Fransen; Gary and Kate Huntsberger and children Heidi, Andrew, Vince, Jolene and Ronnie; and cousins Jaynie and Layton Felstet and family and Bob Huntsberger and family.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church, 215 College St., in Stevensville on Saturday, March 3, at 3 p.m. with Chaplain Alvin J. House and the Rev. Connie Sidebottom officiating. A reception will follow the service.
