Ned Applebury

HAMILTON - James E. "Ned" Applebury, a lifelong resident of the Bitterroot, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at his home in Hamilton.

He was born on May 25, 1914, at his family's homestead southeast of Bald Butte on the bench above Corvallis. Ned married Ruth Parker on Dec. 28, 1940. Recently he celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with "the pretty lady." They have five children.

Educated in Corvallis, Ned graduated from Corvallis High School in 1933. His working years began at the experiment station from 1934 to 1937. His first contact with car sales was in 1937 working on the sales force at Chevrolet Mills Motor Co. in Hamilton. During the war years he worked for Gold Medal Dairies and as a potato dehydrator. In 1946 he returned to the car business, working with his dear friend Pete Staton at the Chevrolet dealership. He was a member of the Chevrolet 100 Car Club. In 1950 he built the new Pontiac agency, which he operated for seven years before converting the building to the Sportsman Motel. Ned ran the Sportsman until his "retirement" in 1972. At this point, his career as a Ravalli County Fair manager began.

For 18 years he was a most dedicated and successful fair manager. He began projects to renew the grounds, built a new facility for art, and worked diligently to make the grounds available for public events. His contribution to the fair industry and the community left an admirable legacy. Most notably, Ned was honored with the prestigious "Fair Manager of the Year 1984" by the Rocky Mountain Association of Fairs, which involves six states and a portion of Canada and more than 65 fairs.

Ned was the kind of person who found it necessary and natural to be supportive and involved in the activities of his community. For 70 years, Ned was active in the Hamilton community as a businessman, a civil servant and an honored citizen. He was a member of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, a 30-year member of the Lions Club, and a county commissioner. He held an eight-year position on the County Park Board, spent two years on the Wild Rivers Commission, 12 years on the Trapper Creek Job Corps Advisory Board, and 12 years on the Hamilton School Board, including a chairmanship. He served eight years on the Daly Mansion Board in remembrance of his friend Countess Margit Bessenyey.

Ned's love of antique cars and local history continued throughout his life. He rescued the rusted remnants of automobiles (and various other bits of history) and lovingly restored them to their original beauty. In his car barn "museum," Ned displayed about 20 beautiful antique cars and other memorabilia. Ned often could be seen leading a local parade or touring the countryside with "The Bitterroot Valley Dusters" in one of his antique cars.

Known as a historian's historian, Ned's excellent memory and knowledge of the area were shared both formally and informally over the years. Recently he and one of his coffee clubs continued the tradition of "solving the problems of the Bitterroot." The Bitterroot Mountains held a place of awe for Ned, who took his horse to many a summit where no horse has been before or since.

Ned is survived by his loving wife Ruth, sister Beth Flint of Corvallis, five children, their families, and many other relatives. His eldest child, Meredithe Lee, is a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Terry and his family live in Lafayette, Calif. He is a chemical engineer and the CTO of his company, Applied Processes Technology. Brian and his family live in Seattle. Brian is a civil engineer and head of the Western Division for the Army Corps of Engineers. Working as an area veterinarian, Alan lives in Hamilton with his family. Julie and her family live in Denver, where Julie is senior staff analyst for United Air Lines.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Dowling Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of your choice.

Dowling Funeral Home and Crematory in Hamilton is assisting the family with service arrangements.
