Elizabeth P. Phillips
Elizabeth Pinkerton Phillips died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Phoenix, Ariz., where she had lived for the past 46 years.
She was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Kirksville, Mo., to Clarence and Mary (Floyd) Pinkerton. At the age of 7, her family moved to Kansas for one year and then relocated in Bozeman, where she received all of her formal education, graduating from Gallatin County High School in 1937.
She married
Robert M. Phillips of Bozeman on Dec. 7, 1941. During their married
life, the couple lived in Bozeman, Livingston and Phoenix. Retail work was her profession, and she was employed by Chambers-Fisher Co. and Riddles Ladies Wear.
She was a member of the North Valley Free Will Baptist Church of Phoenix, and services were held there.
She was an enthusiastic gardener, especially raising flowers. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and visiting with her friends. She volunteered her time with many groups. She spent a vacation in Bozeman this past summer.
Her husband died in August 1998.
She is survived by her son, Steve and his wife, Carla of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Lindsey of Phoenix; sister, Dorothy Aasheim of Bozeman; brother, Dick of California; nephews, Larry Aasheim of Bozeman, Ron Aasheim of Helena; niece, Katety Rieman of Phoenix; and other nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to North Valley Free Will Baptist Church, 18220 N. 20th St., Phoenix, Ariz.; or to the American Heart Association.
Alva William Norton
Alva William Norton, 79, of Basin, Wyo., died on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Billings.
Survivors include his son, James Norton, of Bozeman.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Grebull, Wyo., with Rev. James Moon officiating. A full military graveside rites will follow at Mount View cemetery at Basin, Wyo.
A memorial fund has been set up at Security State Bank, P.O. Box 531, Basin, Wyo., 82410, with proceeds going to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Atwood Family Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
Paula R. Delzer
Paula Raye Delzer, 43, of Big Sky died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. She was diagnosed with a form of liver cancer in August.
Paula was born on July 12, 1958. in Bemidji, Minn., to Robert Douglas and Iona LaVerne (Tack) Kruger.
Paula was raised in Eagan, Minn. As a teenager, she spent many summers at the lake in Tenstrike, Minn., swimming and water skiing and spending time with her horses, Sunny and Bobbi. Paula graduated from Burnsville High School.
She met Peter Delzer at the Burnsville Embers Restaurant where they both worked. They were married
Nov. 29, 1980. They visited Big Sky in 1986 and moved there permanently in 1988. She worked for Yellowstone Raft Company and Bridget O'briens the first year, and then as a waitress at Buck's T-4. Together Paula and Peter, and Peter's parents, Ralph and Ruby, started Delzer Management Services in 1992.
Paula loved horseback riding and the Bozeman Icedogs hockey. She was a member of the Big Sky Association for the Arts. She was the unofficial cookie maker for the fire department, turning out her legendary chocolate chip cookies. She loved camping, the outdoors, the mountains and mostly her dog, "Kodi." She enjoyed her participation in the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
She is survived by her husband, Peter Delzer of Big Sky; parents, Robert and Iona Kruger of Eagan, Minn.; brother, Robert C. "Butch" (Kimberly) Kruger and their daughters, Kristina and Katherine and son, William of Lakeville, Minn.; mother and father-in-law, Ralph and Ruby Delzer of Big Sky; brothers-in-law, Pastor Steven (Donita) Delzer of Northfield, Minn., Daniel (Suzanne) Delzer of Big Sky, James Delzer of Big Sky, John (Toni) Delzer of Big Sky; sister-in-law, Mary Delzer of Lakeville, Minn.; and nieces and nephews, Rebecca, Benjamin, Sarah and Samuel.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Big Sky Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post No. 99 Crisis Fund in memory of Paula; to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation; or to Eagle Mount.
Lawrence Coughlin Jr.
The Honorable R. Lawrence Coughlin Jr., 72, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at his Tidewater home in Mathews, Va.
He is survived by his wife, Susan MacGregor Coughlin; his children, Lisa Coughlin Powell, Lynne Coughlin Samson, Sara Coughlin Noon, and Robert Lawrence Coughlin III; his grandchildren, Kaleigh Coughlin Noon, Marguerite Lawrence Samson, Samuel James Noon, Benjamin Robert Noon and Anne Elizabeth Noon.
Congressman Coughlin was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1964 and to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1966. In 1968, he was elected to represent the 13th Congressional District of Pennsylvania in the United States Congress. He served as a member of Congress for 12 consecutive terms spanning 24 years.
A funeral service will be held at the Old Chapel, Fort Myers, Va., at 9 a.m. on Dec. 20, followed by interment in Arlington National cemetery.

Theodore Townsend
Theodore "Ted" Townsend, 82, long-time resident of Bozeman, died of cancer Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 4, 2001, in Deming, Luna County, N.M.
He was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Jefferson County on the Townsend homestead. He was the son of the late William Garren Townsend and Mary Elizabeth Shipman Townsend. His parents were born in Henderson County, N.C., and they came to the valley in 1904 and 1897, respectively.
He was married
to Ruby Grove of Bozeman from 1945 to 1954. They had one daughter, Candace Townsend.
Ted married
Ruth Brown of Whitehall at the Christian Church in Bozeman on Nov. 2, 1954.
Ted attended schools in Three Forks and Bozeman. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Dillon from 1936 to 1939. From 1939 to 1942 he worked at Boeing in Seattle.
In August 1942, he joined the Amy Air Corps and during World War II flew more than 50 combat missions over Western and Eastern Europe, North Africa and Italy. He was a tech sergeant, with duties of flight engineer and top turret gunner on B-17s. He was honorably discharged in August 1945, and awarded the following medals: Aviation Badge, Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Emblem, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Award.
Ted was a life member of the VFW Post 903 Bozeman and served several terms as commander of Major Drennan Post. He was awarded all-state commander in 1971 and 1972. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern railroad for 30 years out of Livingston and Bozeman. His favorite pastime was playing pinochle with family and friends.
Ted and his wife, Ruth, moved to Deming, N.M., in 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; three daughters and a son: Candace and husband, Gary E. Hope of Wallis, Texas; Brenda Mitchell of Emerald Isle, N.C.; Ted E. Townsend and wife, Cathy of Las Vegas, Nev.; Tina and husband, Joe Atencio of Santa Fe, N.M. Ted has 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three nieces and nine nephews.
His sister, Mildred Townsend Arnold of Willow Creek and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Ritchie Townsend and Viola Dean Townsend McKay, survive him.
Preceding him in death was a half-brother, Vernon Shipman; brothers, William Townsend and Roscoe G. Townsend; one niece, Rena Shipman; and one nephew, Hart Shipman.
Ted will be cremated in Deming, N.M., and his ashes will be returned to Bozeman to be buried with his brothers and cousin, Lloyd Townsend, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
