Vivian Dolores Wittkopp
MISSOULA - Vivian Dolores Wittkopp died of natural causes at St. Patrick Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001.
She was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully.
Vivian was born on Feb. 21, 1930, in Butte to Donald J. and Elsie Barney.
She was raised in Billings, where she married
Frank Wittkopp on June 25, 1949, and they started raising their two sons, John D. Wittkopp and Michael C. Wittkopp. In 1960 they moved to Missoula, where they resided the rest of their lives.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law Debbie, all of Missoula; three grandchildren, Matthew Wittkopp of Missoula and Thomas and Kristina Wittkopp of Germany; and three great-grandchildren, Lucas, Brittney and Madison.
Vivian was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Garden City Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church.

Pearl Downing
RONAN - Pearl Downing, 83, of Ronan, passed away Jan. 6, 2001, at St. Luke Community Nursing Center.
Pearl was born in Ronan on Aug. 18, 1917, to L.R. Banning and Katie May Brown.
She attended school in Dillon, where she met and married
Patrick Downing in 1935.
They then moved to California and she worked in an airplane factory assembling parts while Pat was in the service.
After the war, they returned to Montana and settled in Butte.
While in Butte, Pearl gave birth to their only daughter, Andrea.
They lived in Butte until 1967 when they moved to Missoula. There she worked at the Union Hall as a business agent.
Pearl loved her animals, gardening, crocheting, family and playing cards.
She was a very special, energetic and loving person who cared for all, especially her grandchildren.
She will be missed very much.
She was preceded in death by her husband Pat, parents, sisters Della May and Ruth, and brother Ralph.
She is survived by her daughter Andrea Downing of Ronan; sister Ethel of Las Vegas; two grandchildren, Robin Miller of Ronan and Drew Miller of Missoula; nephews Wayne Turner of Whitehall, Kevin Wheeler of Utah, Kermit Wheeler of Clinton, Jim Salmonson of Butte and Doug Salmonson of Washington; nieces June Sloan of Polson, Ruth Anderson of Wise River and Kay Malone of Wyoming; and sister-in-law Fern Goodman of Polson.
Private burial will be held and there will be no service at Pearl's request.
George William 'Gus' Hossack
GREAT FALLS - Psychologist and longtime educator George William "Gus" Hossack, 74, died Jan. 9, 2001, of pulmonary fibrosis at the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls.
Hossasck was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Glacier National Park, the son of a park ranger.
He grew up in the park and attended schools in Kalispell, graduating from Flathead County High School in 1944.
He then was accepted into the Navy officer training program at Carroll College.
He attended college and naval training there and at the University of Washington until his discharge.
He continued his studies at Montana State College in Bozeman.
In 1948 he married
Corrine Moger; they later were divorced.
He married
Janet Merrill on March 16, 1979, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Following his college graduation in 1950, he began a long teaching career with positions of teacher and administrator at Harrison.
He completed a master's of education in administration and counseling at the University of Maine in 1953.
He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1955 and spent the following year in Adelaide, South Australia, teaching mathematics, physics and science at Adelaide Boys High School.
Upon his return in 1956, he accepted a teaching position at Missoula County High School and later became Dean of Boys at Sentinel High School. He became director of guidance for the Billings public schools in 1960.
He completed a doctorate of education at the University of Wyoming in 1966 and was director of pupil personal services for Laramie schools.
In 1967 he joined the education and counseling faculty at Montana State University-Bozeman, serving as counseling psychologist at the student counseling center and teaching graduate courses in counseling and testing.
He also was psychological-educational consultant for the Bozeman and Livingston public school systems and was a field assessment officer for Peace Corps trainees.
In 1978 he accepted a position at the University of Montana in Missoula as chairman of the master's-in-counseling program.
After retiring from the Montana University System, he continued his lifelong love of teaching by serving as adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore.
In 1982 he returned to Montana to serve as psychologist for Pine Hills School in Miles City.
In 1986 he and his wife went into private practice together in Great Falls as Giant Springs Counseling Associates.
Hossack garnered many honors during his professional career.
He was awarded an NEA scholarship for further psychological study and was named to "Who's Who in the West" and "Who's Who in Science." He was a member of the National Register of Health Service Providers, American Psychological Association, Montana Sex Offenders Treatment Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Sigma Chi fraternity and Church of Incarnation of Great Falls.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kim Martinson of Burnsville, Minn., and Hillary Brown of Pittford, Vt; son Lance Hossack of Manhattan; two stepdaughters, Karin Wallen of Great Falls and Ellen Pfalzgraff of Calgary, Alberta; stepson Tom Roeder of Canby, Ore.; three brothers, John Hossack of Eureka, Charles Hossack of Columbia Falls and Donald Hossack of Kalispell; and 10 grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Episcopal Church of Incarnation in Great Falls.
Robert Edward Calhoun
STEVENSVILLE - Robert Edward Calhoun, 54, of Stevensville, died of cancer at his home on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001.
He was born on Nov. 27, 1946, in San Francisco, the son of Paul and Bridget (Montez) Calhoun.
Survivors include his wife Cindy; children Rosemary, Wendy and Robert; grandchildren Robert, Shawn, Joshua and Sara; his mother Bridget Calhoun; brothers Jim, Jeffrey and Kenny; and sister Margaret.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville. T. C. Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside cemetery in Stevensville.
Anna Weisser Kosan
1905 - 2001
LODI, Calif. - Anna Kosan died Jan. 12, 2001, in Lodi at age 96.
She was born Sept. 2, 1905, in Hosmer, S.D., to Katherine and August Weisser.
As a child she moved to Missoula, where she lived until about 1970.
She wwas employed for 50 years at the Florence Laundry.
After retirement she and her husband Mike Kosan move to Lodi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Mike; six sisters, Tena Pring, Emma Meuchel, Martha Flink, Barbara Pietro, Hilda Rebich and Ella Switzer; and four brothers, Jack, Adolph, Phillip and John Weisser.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Burial took place in Lodi.
