Orlo Johnson
Former Libby resident Orlo Byron Johnson, 95, of Portland, died on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Portland
He was born on June 9, 1908, at Mose, N.D., to Olof and Bessie Johnson.
Orlo grew up in North Dakota, where he attended school, graduating from high school at Hannaford and attending Jamestown College for two years.
In 1934 Orlo moved to Missoula where he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service, and on Nov. 29, 1934 he married
Marian Lura Weydemeyer at Fortine.
Orlo worked for the Forest Service in various positions ranging from surveyor to log scaler.
He and Marian moved to Libby in 1942 where Orlo was employed by J. Neils Lumber Company as a foreman in the logging department and where the couple’s four daughters were born.
The Johnson family moved from Libby to Portland in 1954 after Orlo accepted a position with Western Wood Products, where he worked until 1969, including three years at Sacramento, Calif.
From 1969 until retiring in 1975, Orlo worked for Southwest Forest Industries in Pinetop, Ariz., as a log check scaler.
After retiring Orlo and Marian moved to Centralia, Wash., and in 1998 they moved to Portland.
A longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Orlo belonged to Libby Lodge No. 85, AF&AM at Libby and the White River Lodge in Pinetop.
Orlo served on the school board at Libby, where he was also an active member of the Libby Lions Club and the Methodist Church.
He belonged to Toastmasters at Portland, and wherever he lived Orlo enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed baseball and reading western and railroad history.
Orlo’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family. He was the family historian and kept even distant relatives connected through communication.
Orlo was preceded in death by his wife Marian and sister Ione.
Survivors include his daughters Margaret Harper, Tacoma, Wash., Judith Billings, Puyallup, Wash., Kathryn Eisenzimmer, Boring, Ore., and Barbara Johnson, Portland; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A service of remembrance will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham, Ore.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

Lona McCallum
Lona M. McCallum, 82, lifetime Libby area resident, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her home in Libby.
She was born on April 21, 1921, at Libby, to Edward and Nancy Smith.
Raised on the family ranch at Swamp Creek, Lona attended the Swamp Creek School and went to high school in Libby.
She married
Walter F. (Babe) McCallum on March 10, 1936, at Libby.
A gifted artist and avid fisherman. Lona enjoyed both activities throughout her life. She also operated Lona’s Ceramics Shop and later Lona’s Hallmark Shop, until retiring.
Lona was an active member of the Libby Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, the Farm Women’s Club and the Libby Fine Arts Group.
She was preceded in death by her husband Babe in 1974, son Richard (Dick) McCallum in 1990, and daughter Gerianne McCallum in 1995.
Surviving are grandchildren Dana Wallace, Troy; Dawn Fifield, Salt Lake City; Dulcie Wallace, Troy; Karrie Jo Clark, Goose Creek, S.C.; Kathi Jo Garrison, Colville, Wash.; Sheila Bartz, Yakima, Wash.; Terry Chittenden, Auburn, Wash.; Kevin McCallum, Chaffee, Mo., and Michael McCallum, Colorado Springs, Colo; sister Monte Magera, Libby, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the City of Libby cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Friday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Nelson & Vial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Libby Fine Arts Group or the Libby Volunteer Fire Department.
Alfred Mehus
Alfred M. Mehus, 94, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 3, 2004, at Libby.
He and his wife were longtime residents of northwest Minnesota until coming to Libby five years ago.
Survivors include his wife Ardith of Libby; daughter Mary Kay Rasmussen, Libby, and sons Steve Mehus, South St. Paul, Minn., and Tim Mehus and his wife Linel, Woodbury, Minn., and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son-in-law Robert Rasmusson in November 2003.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday at Faith Bible Church with interment services to follow at the City of Libby cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 10 am. until service time.
Arrangements are under direction of the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
James Monheiser
James L. Monheiser. 72, of Libby, died at Libby on Feb. 3, 2004.
He was born on March 16, 1931, at Ault, Colo., to Gottlieb and Marie Monheiser.
He was raised and educated at Greeley.
After graduating from high school Jim served in the U.S. Navy for nine years, traveling around the world and serving during the Korean War.
For much of his life, Jim was employed with the U.S. Park Service working in concessions management. He served with the service at Yellowstone National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glen Canyon Recreational Area, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Mount Rainier National Park, Mount Rushmore National Park and at Denver and in Washington, D.C., before retiring from the park service in 1989.
He married
Margaret Birsette in 1979.
They came to Libby in 1996 to assist in the family operation of Beck’s Montana Café.
Jim was known and liked for his friendly, jovial manner by all who dined at Beck’s.
He enjoyed reading and golfing and exercising at the Montana Athletic Club.
Survivors include his wife Margaret, Libby; his children Linda Leyba and Barbara Monheiser, both of Libby, Andy Monheiser, Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., Nancy Virgil, Fort Collins, Colo., and Alice Anderson, Henderson, Nev.
He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Catherine Dieterle, Joe Monheiser and Patty Reynolds, all of Greeley, Colo., Mary Ann Spratte, Littleton, Colo., and Bernard Monheiser, Douglas, Ariz., and grandchildren Melanie, Ryan, Matt, Dylan, Taylor, Jeremiah and Jacob.
He was preceded in death by former wife Donna Anderson in 1995.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. on Friday and until noon on Saturday at the funeral home.
Erna Hahler
Erna Hahler, 82, a 40-year resident of Libby, died on Jan. 30, 2004, at Kalispell.
She was born on Sept. 1, 1921, at Eureka, S.D., to John and Rosina Wolf Rieker.
preceded in death by her husband Bill Hahler, a brother and three sisters, Erna is survived by brother Harold Rieker and his wife Marie, Spearfish, S.D.; nephew Melvin Hahler and his wife Darlene, Mellette, S.D.; sister-in-law Irene Hahler, Mellette; niece Donna Miller, Oakdale, Minn., and her extended family, Gloria Scott, Wade Scott and Kristy Hanson, all of Kalispell, and Steve Scott, Billings.

Johanna McClelland
Johanna McClelland, 95, died on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at her home in Troy.
She was born on Sept. 19, 1908, in New York City, to Cornelius and Elizabeth Sanderse.
She married
John McClelland on June 10, 1933, in Paterson, N.J.
Her husband’s work for the Erie-Lackawana Railroad led to their move to Mantua, Ohio, in the early 1940’s.
After the death of her husband, Johanna moved to Naples, Fla., and after suffering a stoke she moved to Montana in July 2001 to live with her daughter Betty Lou and son-in-law Christian Penner
Survivors include daughters Betty Lou Penner of Troy, and Patricia Wattworth of Ohio, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Johanna was also preceded in death by her son Duane and a granddaughter.
Private family services will be conducted.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Jennie Mejie
Genevieve H. (Jennie) Mejie, 86, died on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at the Libby Care Center.
She was born on July 4, 1917, at Havre to Helen Marcinkowski Doubek and Bartolome (Bart) Doubek.
The oldest of 11 children, Jennie attended a small country school near Turner and Turner High School.
An excellent student, Jennie missed graduation by two months when she withdrew from school to help at home with new-born twin brothers.
Her days were filled with helping with the family farming operation and taking care of her mother and brothers.
She became an excellent cook, housekeeper and caregiver.
It was on the Big Flat that she met and fell in love with Charles Michael Wagner, a handsome young mechanic from Illinois.
They were married
in 1937 and spent their honeymoon at a ranch north of Libby before returning to the east side.
Jennie and Charles and young sons Michael and John moved to the Warland and Eureka areas in 1948 and to Libby the following year.
Charles was employed by W.R. Grace and Jennie worked as a clerk at the C&H Market.
Several of her brothers and sisters, along with her mother, also moved to Libby and as always, Jennie was there to help with any family crisis, whether it be her mother’s failing health or her sister’s bout with tuberculosis.
In 1959, Charlie’s health began to fail and he died in October 1961.
Jennie remained in Libby, working at the grocery store until moving to Harlem in 1968.
She worked for Safeway and eventually settled into a bookkeeping position at Harlem Plumbing Shop.
On weekends and holidays she would drive to the Clayton Irwin ranch near Hogeland and assist with the farming operations, providing care as their health declined.
She retired from the plumbing shop in 1969 and moved to the Irwin ranch.
During her early retirement she enjoyed bowling, reading a good book, playing cards, cooking and canning.
She loved to help Irwin’s nephew Clayton Mejie with ranching chores, whether it be driving grain truck or bringing a new born calf into the house to keep it warm.
In 1990 Clayton sold the ranch and he and Jennie moved to Libby to be close to family and friends and to love and spoil four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Jennie remained independent in her own home, cooking daily meals, until suffering a stroke and entering the Libby Care Center in November 2000.
Survivors include her husband Clayton Mejie, Libby; sons Michael C. Wagner and his wife Sandy, and John F. Wagner and his wife Sandy, all of Libby; brother Leon Doubek, Watsonville, Calif; sister Annie Pescatore and brothers Ronald and Donald Doubek, all of Libby; grandchildren Michael Wagner and his wife Linda; Debbie Tangen and her husband Wes; Jon Michael Wagner, and Bergetta Ellen Fortenberry and her husband Rob; and great-grandchildren Christopher and Brian Wagner; Kimberly and Tyler Tangen and Nicholas and Kelsey Fortenberry.
She was preceded in death by sisters Dorthe Noble and Betty Doubek and brothers Velven, Karel, Paul and Clayton Doubek.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon David Weisbeck officiating.
A reception will follow at Christ Lutheran Church.
Mary Carrier
Mary J. Carrier, 91, of Libby, died on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at the Libby Care Center.
She was born on Feb. 8, 1912, at Ellsworth, Minn., to Claude and Grace Bryan Swale, the oldest of five children.
Mary was a past worthy matron of Chapter 20, Order of the Eastern Star, in Shoshoni, Wyo., where she lived for 21 years.
When her husband Glen Carrier retired in 1974 they traveled from coast to coast, border to border, seeing the United States.
A stroke in 1991 limited her favorite pastime of writing letters and cards. She never missed a birthday, anniversary or special occasion and will be greatly missed.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Glen, daughter Bonnie, brothers Fay and Clarence, and sister Mildred.
Survivors include son Bruce Carrier and his wife Pat, Libby; sister Betty Cloudy, Port Ludlow, Wash., 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
