Henry Holter

Henry Holter, 67, died on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Libby.
Born at Cloverton, Minn., to Edward and Marget Holter, Henry was raised and educated at Sandstone and Finnlayson in Minnesota.
He married Karen Britton of Sandstone.
They came to Libby in 1964 and Henry worked as a mechanic for the J. Neils Lumber Company, Spencers’ 66 Service and Higdem Ford.
He later moved to eastern Montana, working on farms and ranches until returning to the Libby area.
He married Sue Kateley on May 22, 1979.
Henry most recently worked in the housekeeping department of St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
Although he and Sue were separated, they remained good friends and she cared for him during his final illness.
Survivors include his children, Mary Wolfe and husband Tracy, Meadow, S.D.; Craig Holter in South Dakota, and Curtiss Holter, Alexandria, Minn.; step-children Karla Tyner and husband Duane, Libby; Becky Waite and her husband Tim, Great Falls, and Danny Kateley and his wife Cara, Libby; sister Jeannette Golla of St. Paul, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews including Valerie Albert, Ken Gustafson and Corky Pape, all of Libby.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Les Nelson officiating.
Arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home

Ray Remp

Raymond H. (Ray) Remp, 73, Libby native and longtime Kootenai Valley resident, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Pahrump, Nev.
Ray had operated Remp Sand & Gravel for more than 33 years when he retired in 1998.
Born in Libby on April 21, 1931, to H.C. (Pete) and Bonnie Dunwoody Remp, Ray was raised and educated at Libby, graduating from Libby High School with the Class of 1949.
He attended the University of Idaho, studying engineering and agriculture.
Ray entered the U.S. Army in 1954 and was discharged from active duty in 1956, later serving as a company officer in the Libby unit of the U.S. Army reserves.
He married Iris Biggers on Dec. 6, 1953, at Boise, Idaho.
They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2003.
Following his discharge from active duty, Ray returned to Libby where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and later for J. Neils Lumber Company and St. Regis until starting Remp Sand & Gravel in 1965.
He was also among the original owners of Lincoln Lanes bowling alley.
An avid golfer, Ray served on the board of directors of Cabinet View Country Club, working on many development projects.
A Little League coach for more than 20 years, Ray served as president of the Libby Little League Association, was a longtime member of the American Legion’s Austin Reedy Post 97, and participated in league bowling for more than 50 years.
Ray donated time, labor and equipment for numerous community projects, the most recent was the completion of the new city baseball fields.
A Polaris Snow Cat dealer, Ray participated in Snow Cat racing, was an avid fisherman and, in retirement, enjoyed traveling and being grandfather to his 15 grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Iris, Libby; children Ron Remp and his wife Susan, Randy Remp and his wife Linda, Russell Remp and his wife Kathy, all of Libby; Roxanne McCallum and her husband John, Commerce, Mich.; Renee Schad and her husband Al, Libby; Robbie Remp and his wife Darla, Kent, Wash.; sister Ramona Thornton, Vineta, Okla.; and 15 grandchildren.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Libby Memorial Center, followed by interment with military honors at the City of Libby cemetery.
A public reception followed at the VFW Club banquet facility.
Memorials may be made to the Raymond Remp Memorial Fund, in care of Glacier Bank of Libby.

Kathryn Leir

Former longtime Libby resident Kathryn M. Leir, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Spokane.
She was born at Binford, N.D., on Feb. 25, 1915, to Clarence Brodshaug and Kathryn Moore Brodshaug.
The family lived at McHenry, N.D., where she was raised and educated.
Kathryn married Mansfield Leir on Oct. 23, 1935, at Moorehead, Minn., and they lived at McHenry and later in the Fargo-Moorehead area until moving to Libby in 1946.
The Leirs raised their family in Libby, where Kathryn was a full-time mom.
Her husband died in 1979 and Kathryn remained in Libby until moving to the Spokane area in 1986.
She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother, was an extraordinary cook and baker and is especially remembered for her homemade bread, doughnuts and lefse.
She and her husband especially enjoyed camping and fishing in the mountains surrounding Libby.
Kathryn is survived by daughters Dixie Lewis and her husband Lloyd, Spokane; Bonnie Swenson and her husband Gary, Libby; sister Doris Aldrich, Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren LaKay Bergin and Kimberly Dahl and great-grandchildren Ryan Bergin, Aaron Bergin and Cameron Bergin.
Services will be conducted at noon on Saturday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel followed by interment in the City of Libby cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday and until service time on Saturday.

Bob Lukes

Former Libby educator and businessman Robert Wayne Lukes, 66, died on Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at his home in Trout Creek.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1938, at Turtle Lake, N.D., to Frederick and Ruth Haas Lukes.
Bob attended Valley City State University in Valley City, N.D., and then North Dakota State University in Jamestown, N.D., where he earned a master’s degree in education.
He earned a doctorate in education from the University of Montana at Missoula.
Bob taught chemistry and German in Lisbon, N.D., and Lamoure, N.D., before moving to Libby as curriculum director.
In association with Stu Swenson, Bob worked as an insurance agent in Libby for seven years before returning to his career in education.
Bob worked as a teaching center director in Missoula and a school superintendent in Idaho and Montana. He retired from the Noxon school district in June 2000.
He loved Montana, the hunting and fishing, and most of all his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Frederick.
Survivors include his wife Terrie, Trout Creek; daughters Sue Riley, Libby, and Julie and her husband Ron Zinkgraf, Spokane, son Thomas and his wife Julie Lukes, Spokane; granddaughters Monika Riley, Lakeside, Calif., and Jamie Zinkgraf, Spokane, grandson Mitchell Lukes, Spokane; sister Sharon and her husband Jim Lukes Mortensen, State College, Pa.; aunts Viola Seeger, Turtle Lake, N.D., Donna Mae Bilquist, Williston, N.D. and Jean Duncan, Billings; and nephews Jon Mortensen and Chris Mortensen, both of State College, and Mark Mortenson, New York City.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Trout Creek Community Church in Trout Creek with the rev. Gaylund Olson officiating.
A potluck will follow at the Wayside Rest and Bar in Trout Creek.
Donations may be sent to Sanders County Hospice, P.B. Box 768, Plains, MT 59859.
Bunch-Toews Chapel of Thompson Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Vickers

Former Libby resident Helen V. Vickers, 81, of Helena, died at her home on Monday, Jan. 24, 2005.
Born on Oct. 9, 1923, at Butte, the only child of Marguerite Winslow Vanderbeck and James H. Vanderbeck of Virginia City, Helen was a direct descendent of two of Montana’s earliest pioneer families.
She grew up and attended school in Virginia City.
During World War II she attended nursing school in Salt Lake City and later earned a degree in sociology from the University of Southern California.
After the war Helen married childhood sweetheart John R. Vickers in Virginia City.
They moved to Missoula where John earned a degree in pharmacy from the University of Montana.
After John graduated, the couple returned to Virginia City where Helen taught school and John worked as pharmacist and postmaster.
Through the years they raised four children.
In 1955, the family moved to Berkeley, Calif., where Helen taught elementary school while John studied for the priesthood.
In 1958, the family moved to Libby, where Helen began a lifelong commitment of service to the Episcopal Diocese of Montana, and John served as priest for mission churches at Libby, Troy and Eureka, where they made lifelong friends.
In 1967, the family moved back to Madison County, where Helen continued to work and grow as a counselor and spiritual leader within the diocese and John served as mission priest to Episcopal churches at Sheridan, Virginia City and Jeffers.
In 1977, with her husband forced into retirement by a debilitating disease, Helen moved the family to Helena and founded an Episcopal retreat center known as “His Place.”
His Place became the venue for countless Christian conferences, retreats and study and counseling sessions.
After 26 years of operating His Place, and at the age of 80, Helen retired last year.
A lifelong student with a healthy intellectual curiosity, Helen also was an avid world traveler. Her travels took her to the Caribbean, Central America, Japan, Russia and on numerous trips throughout Europe.
She also managed annual visits with friends at Eureka, Libby and Troy.
preceded in death by her parents, her husband John and daughter Jamie Turner, Helen is survived and will be greatly missed by her son and daughter-in-law John and Cathy Vickers, Hillsboro, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Jo and Geoff Guinn, Radersburg; son Murray Vickers, Polson; son-in-law Stephen Turner, Helena, and grandchildren Hilary and Michael Turner, Helena, Paul Vickers, Hillsboro, Barry and Angie Mitchell, Butte, and Alek Guinn in Florida.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cathedral in Helena, followed by a reception.
The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of St. Peter’s, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601.
When Helen retired last year she received a commendation, signed by the bishop, that summed up her career. It read, in part:
“In recognition of your faithful service for nearly half a century to the people of God in the diocese of Montana, as the devoted wife of John, priest, as spiritual leader and guide, as provider of gracious hospitality to thousands at His Place, as friend, companion and counselor, as faithful participant and leader in the sacramental life, and as an example to all of the Christ life, we extend to you our deep and grateful appreciation on behalf of the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Montana.”

Dick Dermond

Richard Lee (Dick) Dermond, 84, died Jan. 19, 2005, at his home in Libby.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1920, at Eckley, Colo., to Donald and Edna Watters Dermond and was raised and educated at Onalaska, Wash.
Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 17 and served four years as a ship’s carpenter.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Dick remained a civilian for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard following the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
He served with the Coast Guard during World War II along the northern Pacific Coast near Alaska.
Following his honorable discharge at the end of the war, Dick became a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy, serving as a carpenter and shipwright aboard many naval vessels including the USS Langley, the forerunner of the modern aircraft carrier.
He married Fern Tisher Fuller at Centralia, Wash. in 1972.
Their marriage was later solemnized at the Seattle Temple.
Dick worked in the maintenance department of the Washington State Highway Patrol at Olympia for five years before retiring.
He and his wife were seasonal Libby residents until moving here permanently three years ago.
Survivors include his wife Fern, Libby; sons Richard Lee (Rick) Dermond, Jr., Sequim, Wash., Michael Ray (Mike) Dermond and his wife Norma, Lynnwood, Wash.; step-children William Fuller and his wife Carol, Centralia, Wash., Norman (Rick) Fuller and his wife Janene, Orem, Utah, Wendy Fuller Christensen and her husband Joe, Snohomish, Wash., Wyonne Fuller Perrault and her husband Joe, Darrington, Wash., Tracy Joe Fuller and his wife Pam, Boise, Idaho, Terrell (Terry) Fuller and his wife Teresa, Olympia, Wash., and Jared Fuller, Spokane, 31 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Libby.
Interment with military honors followed at the City of Libby cemetery.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel and from noon until service time Tuesday in the Relief Society Room at the LDS Church.
Arrangements were under direction of the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Douglas J. Dubler

Douglas J. Dubler, 62, of Libby, died on Jan. 18, 2005, at the Pinewood Care Center in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
He was born on April 18, 1942, at Tacoma, Wash., where he was raised and educated.
Doug came to Libby in 1969 and was employed by St. Regis Paper Company and Champion International until retiring in 1992.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Linda, Libby; children Donna Bonhoom, Chehalis, Wash., Douglas Lynn (Joe) Dubler, Libby, and Sandra Hendricks, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; step-children Linda Annette Reeves, Syracuse, N.Y., and Jim Melton, Libby; sisters Mary Lou Welch, Tacoma, Wash., and Carol Teague, Plano, Texas, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation was from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday and until 2 p.m. on Monday.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel with interment services at the City of Libby cemetery.
