Annette Isabel Alderson
Birth date: June 6, 1940
Death date: May 20, 2014

Annette Isabel Alderson was born on June 7, 1940 in Salt lake City, Utah, to Margaret Isabel Mendenhall Alderson and Charles Alfred Alderson. She passed on to be with her Lord and Savior on May 20, 2014.
Annette moved as an infant with her parents to Boise, Idaho, where her brother John was born, then to Twin Falls, Idaho, where her brother Jim was born, and in 1948 to Bozeman, Montana, where she spent the rest of her life. W. W. Alderson, Annette’s great grandfather, was the secretary of the first town meeting held in Bozeman and is credited with proposing that the town be named after John Bozeman, another early pioneer of Bozeman. Alderson Street is named after him.
Annette graduated from Bozeman Senior High School in 1958, the school’s first graduating class. In 1964, she graduated from Montana State College (now Montana State University), with a degree in Business Management. She was a lifelong diehard fan of both the Bozeman Hawks and the MSU Bobcats, and for several years worked at Bobcat athletic events.
Annette had a varied work career, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse and working at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for several years. She later became a nanny, a career she loved and worked at for many years. She helped successfully raise the children of Rolf and Jaynee Groseth (Peder and Anders), and remained close to the family until her death. She also helped successfully raise the children of Todd and Jeanie Wilkinson (Carter and Natalie), who also remained good friends of Annette until her death. She also was a Nanny for Joe and Amy May (children of Jody and Cindy May) and Kelyn Rein (daughter of Howard and Vickie Rein).
Annette became a lifetime member of St. James Episcopal Church in Bozeman in 1948. Growing up in the church, faithfully attending Sunday school, being confirmed in the church, and later helping in the Children’s Nursery helped her firm up her lifetime religious convictions, and established her faithfulness in attending and serving the parish. She served the church in many ways, from counting money after Sunday services, to greeting everyone she saw with a welcoming smile, whether they were members or visitors, many of whom became members in part due to her welcoming smile. Many of the church’s members visited and supported Annette when she was no longer able to regularly get out and about town on her own. In 2012 Annette was enshrined in the St. James Wall of Fame. She was also an active member of the Eastern Star in Bozeman. In addition she was a proud lifetime member of the MSU Alumni Association and was a member of the Sons and Daughters of the Pioneers (direct descendants of pioneers who were in Montana prior to 1868).
Many of Annette’s favorite summers as a child were spent at Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho, with her beloved grandmother, Gaga, as well as her mother and brothers and cousins. The cabin in Idaho was Annette’s favorite place to be when she was not in Bozeman, and she often, including just before her death, referred to her love and memories of that spot.
Annette’s father predeceased her in 1955 and her mother in 1995. She is survived by two loving brothers and their families; John and Louise Alderson of Boulder, Colorado, and their children Angela and Mike Oakley, Michelle Feller and Chuck and Christina Alderson, all living in Colorado; Jim and Connie Alderson of Palm Springs, California and Whitefish, Montana and their children Jennifer and Buck Page and Justin and Kristen Alderson, both of whom live in California. In addition, Annette is survived by 9 grandnieces and grandnephews – Jake and Bree Oakley, Victoria, Ryan and Megan Feller, Max and Els Page, and Zachary and Makenzie Alderson. She is also survived by 2 step-grandnieces – Sierrah and Caelin Mufford.
In addition to her direct family, Annette is survived by many long time close friends both in Bozeman and in other parts of the country. Closest among her out of town friends are Rich and Renee Waite of Pahrump, Nevada, and Margaret Ayers of Port Gibson, Mississippi. She will be missed and remembered by all of her family and many friends.
A memorial service for Annette will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Bozeman on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 2 pm. A reception will follow. Interment will occur at a later date.

William "Bill" E. Butler
Birth date: July 18, 1970
Death date: May 13, 2014

William (Bill) Edward Butler was born on July 18, 1970 in Atlanta, GA and died in Bozeman, MT on May 13, 2014. He graduated from Dalton High School in Georgia and the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, BA. Commissioned into the US Marines in 1993 as 2nd LT., Bill completed Ranger and Airborne School the following year graduating second in his class. He served in Liberia, Africa and Haiti protecting the U.S. Embassy. After serving in the Marines, in 2001 he secured his MBA from Fordham University in NYC. Attending to his favorite career aspiration, Bill graduated from the Western Culinary School in Portland, OR. Later he was employed as a military contractor in Afghanistan. After leaving Afghanistan, he managed the dining and catering services on three military bases in Stuttgart, Germany.
Bill met his beloved wife Lydia Lien in Salzburg on a study aboard program when they were seniors in college. They were married on Naushon Island, MA in 2005 and returned to Germany where their son Axel was born in 2008. With a dream of starting his own restaurant and settling in the West, they moved to Bozeman in 2011.
Bill built a restaurant based on creating authentic Italian cuisine. This became Pizza Campania designed with special touches to reflect the history and surrounding region of Bozeman. This included the remodeled granary, the bar made from beetle-kill pine and bricks from the Lehrkind Brewery.
Bill relished the out of doors. He swam and played soccer in his youth, camped in the Smokey Mountains of Georgia, and rafted and kayaked in the Ocoee River of Tennessee and Deschutes of Oregon. He skied and hiked in the Alps and the Bridgers with his wife Lydia and son Axel. Moving to Bozeman was a place where Bill and his family could enjoy their passions.
Robert Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken” had a profound influence on Bill’s life.
It ends:
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by
And that made all the difference”

When he discovered that poem right before heading off to VMI, he told his sister Beverly that he too would always choose to take the road less traveled and so he did. Always ready to step out of his comfort zone, ready for new challenges and always with determination, optimism, and high spirits. While that proved to be the case, and while all too short, he travelled that road so very well – and in wonderful company.
May Bill’s spirit continue to soar.
Bill is survived by his wife Lydia, son Axel, his parents Edward and Roberta Butler, and his sister Beverly (Butler) LaVoi, as well as beloved uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces. A memorial is planned for August 1st, 2014 in Charleston, SC.
A memorial fund has been established for his son Axel.

Some of the gigs he played he asked his grandfather, Floyd "Strick" Strickler to stand in with both vocal and guitar and once in a while even included his mother in his group with her vocals, guitar and tambourine. He made several trips out to the Portland area with groups and singly to play his music. His family and friends are fortunate he left a few tapes for remembrance.
During his life, dogs and other animals were important to Chris. He worked at the Humane Society for a short time where he tried very hard to make friends with the feral cats. Most of his employment was in some way involved with music.

Survivors are his mother and her companion, David Ridgway, maternal grandparents; Floyd and Meta Strickler, and a wealth of uncles, aunts and cousins.
Memorials in his name may be made to the charity of your choice.
A celebration of his life will be held from 1-4 pm on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Bozeman Senior Center. Reminiscence of his music will be played. Family and friends welcome.

Michael Robert Banville
Birth date: March 21, 1939
Death date: March 25, 2014

Born in Ste. Eustache, Quebec, Canada 3/21/1939 to parents Michael & Gabrielle Banville, Michael grew up near the St. Lawrence River enjoying fishing, ice skating, hockey and his lifelong favorite pastime, golf. His father, Michael Sr., was a carpenter and self-taught draftsman - who built the home they lived in - and passed on these skills to young Michael that would later serve him well in life.
He attended Catholic parochial school in Ste. Eustache along with his sister, Joan, and brother Gerald, until the age of 11 when Mike Sr. took a job with the defense contractor, Hughes Aircraft, thus moving the family to Venice, CA where they became U.S. citizens.
While Mike Sr. developed his skills in machining and electronics development, Mike Jr attended public middle school and quickly developed new friends. Having grown up in cold and snowy Montreal, the sunny and warm climate of southern California was loved by the family.
After a three-year stint in Venice, the family moved to Rockville, Maryland – again to support Mike Sr in his machinist career. Mike Jr graduated from Richard Montgomery High School and attended college classes in business.
In 1956, the family moved again to the western U.S., this time planting their roots in Phoenix AZ. Mike Jr began his business career by selling and installing draperies for SEARS, which during the 50s and 60s, was a lucrative industry as Arizona began its attraction as a winter destination for ‘snowbirds’. With 5 years experience under his belt, Mike became an independent installer, and loved the feeling of being ‘his own boss’.
During this time, he met Ruth Lucille Hourihan, who, at the time, worked for Household Finance Company. They married in January of 1961 and had their first son, Michael Charles Banville in November, followed by their second son, John in November 1963.
In 1966, Mike’s career and young family moved to Los Angeles, CA where he developed his sales & promotion skills in the plastics industry with General Binding Company, then later buying and expanding existing businesses. In 1972 he bought SIPCO and re-branded it as Perfect Plastic Products in 1976 – a manufacturer of laminating equipment and materials for luggage tags and vinyl promotional products distributed nationwide.
In February of 1971, he and Ruth had their daughter, Michelle. Shortly after the birth, Ruth was showing signs of calcium deficiency which later contributed to her poor health and eventual early death from congestive heart failure in October of 1982.
After selling Perfect Plastics in 1986, Mike began developing new business interests outside of manufacturing and became a builder of spec homes in both Northern and Southern California during the lucrative 1980s. For a time he owned Penn Valley Travel, an agency in Penn Valley, CA and Classic Floors, a flooring store in Santa Ynez, CA.
With the kids gone, he concentrated on business brokering and real estate sales, which led him to owning several commercial buildings and rental homes around Palmdale and Palm Desert, CA.
Being involved in resort real estate allowed Mike more time to truly develop his skill sets on the golf course, which eventually led to his becoming a USGTF certified golf instructor in 2005. In 2008, he once again moved back to Arizona (Sun City West) to continue his real estate sales career and enjoy more new courses. Since the real estate bubble sent thousands of homes into foreclosure, Mike developed a niche and passion for helping people get back into owning their own home at greatly reduced rates.
He truly enjoyed this lifestyle until stricken with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2013, which led to his relocation to Montana to live out his remaining months with his kids and grandchildren.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Gabrielle, and younger brother Gerald. He is survived by sister Joan (Schoonover) and husband Roland of Fruit Heights, UT; son Michael & wife Katie (Bozeman), son John & wife Yasuko (Honolulu HI) and daughter Michelle (Banville) Moore and husband Terry Moore (Billings), along with grandchildren Adrianna Banville and Mia & Tabitha Moore, and numerous nieces & nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Knights of Columbus Charities Inc, at kofccharities.com
Arrangements for a celebration of life and subsequent Mass in Bozeman, Montana is still pending.

Valentine A. Steiner
Birth date: July 2, 1928
Death date: March 14, 2014

Valentine (Val) Alexander Steiner passed away early Friday morning on March 14, 2014 at the age of 85. Val was born July 2, 1928 in Mott, ND to Joseph and Magdalene (Barth) Steiner, the youngest brother in a family of 15 children. Val grew up on the family farm learning the strong work ethic he was noted for. Known for his impressive dancing skills, he was a favorite at all the many dances held in the area. But one girl caught his eye, Rosella (Rosie) Hamann. He set his cap for her and with the permission of her folks he married her on October 1, 1952. They soon had their first of 4 boys, Rick, and Val was drafted to service his country. The army moved them to Texas where their next two sons Russell (Rusty) and Randal (Randy), were born. Eventually, Val got into the construction business and became know for his quality work and honesty. In the 60’s Val and Rosie moved to Bozeman, MT to continue building and this is where the last of their 4 boys, Robert, was born.
For four decades, Val and Rosie helped shape the town of Bozeman. It’s hard to find a neighborhood in town that doesn’t have one of his houses in it. Val’s reputation for good sturdy houses for not a lot of money reflected his generous nature. He had integrity and was trustworthy. He even would sometimes draw a house plan on a napkin and seal the deal with a handshake. His natural talent for teaching and limitless patience came in handy when passing on the trade to his boys.
Val worked hard and provided well but never missed the opportunity to play hard too. Camping, water skiing and horseback riding were among the many fun activities he did with his family. Val and Rosie always seemed to find time to dance even after a long day’s work. Family was the most important thing and he showed his boys what it was to be a good man, a great husband and father.
Perhaps Val’s greatest accomplishment was that of “Grandpa”. It seems every picture of him has a grand baby on his lap. Endless hours of pulling kids around on a blanket or patiently teaching them something was the norm. More than anything, they just know he treasured them and would always make time for them. He never forgot his daughters-in-law either, treating them all like the precious daughter he never had. Sweet and supportive was his style. Knowing that that they loved his boys was all he needed.
This sweet and gentle man left us on Friday, and we will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter Debbie, son Randy, 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
He is survived by his wife Rosie; sons Rick (Kay) Steiner of Belgrade, MT, Rusty (AnDee) Steiner of Gillette, WY, and Robert (Nancy) Steiner of Bozeman, MT; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, 4 sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
A vigil service will be held 7:00 PM Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Resurrection University Catholic Parish.
