Ivy Marjory Brubaker
Ivy Marjory Fluss Brubaker was released from her earthly bonds on February 27, 2006. She passed away at the Prairie County Nursing Home at age 97.
Ivy was born in Minier Illinois on November 25, 1908 to Irva and Lon Fluss. Irva and Lon had previously established a home on a ranch near Terry, Montana. However, as the birth of their first child neared they determined Irva would be in better hands with her family in Illinois. Four months after Ivy's birth mother and new daughter returned to the ranch near Terry. Ivy would call Terry her home for the remainder of her 97 years.
Early school years found Ivy attending schools in Terry excepting two years of varying country schools. After third grade she settled on Terry as her school home. Her parents purchased a home in Terry so that their three children could attend school in town. She graduated from high school in the spring of 1928. That fall she enrolled in Eastern Montana Normal School, now MSU-Billings, an institution to which her allegiance remained strong throughout her life. After receiving her teaching certificate in 1930 she began her teaching career in Brockway, Montana. Many of her most cherished memories involved Brockway, her students and local activities. A life long joke involved her extracurricular job as girls' basketball and track coach. Ivy was never a real sports fan and admitted that the success of the team had nothing to do with her superior coaching. The talented Brockway girls simply did well on their own with Ivy as their token coach.
After two years of teaching in Brockway, Ivy returned to Terry to teach second grade in the same room where she attended second grade as a child. It was about this time that she turned her lifelong friendship with Albert Brubaker into something more permanent. Albert, after graduating from the University of Minnesota, had returned to Terry to join his father in the bank. On August 11, 1935 Ivy and Albert were married at Ivy's family ranch. Ivy and Albert lived in the same house on McDonald Avenue in Terry for 63 years. Ivy continued to live in the house alone following Albert's death in 1998.
Ivy was very active in the Terry community. Eastern Star, Republican Women, Ladies Aid, weaver's guild, hospital guild and the museum board were among the groups she supported. She also served as a bank director for many years. Her real interest was the Prairie County Museum.
Working countless hours helping to establish the museum in Terry was one of her greatest satisfactions. Her interest and involvement in the museum never wavered. She was rewarded for her dedication to preserving history in 1993 when she was presented the Montana Historical Society Trustees' Award for contributing to preserving Montana history. In 1995 the alumni association of MSU-Billings honored Ivy by selecting her as the Outstanding Alumni for Exceptional Contribution.
The museum and her activities were important to Ivy but the center to her life was her family. "Gammy", as she was affectionately known by family and friends, saw no task impossible if the outcome was beneficial to her family. "Gammy" is survived by her daughter, Myrna (Gary) Ryti, her son, Kent (Jean) Brubaker, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ivy's grandchildren include Marni (Ed) Cota, Dana Point, CA Kalli Ryti, Bozeman, MT, Amber (Russell) Murr, Laguna Hills, CA and Dane Brubaker, Missoula, MT. Kayl and Grant Cota are her grandsons.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Private family funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry.
