Edith Blakeslee

BILLINGS - Edith Blakeslee, 94, died of natural causes Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Rim Shadows Personal Care Home in Billings.

Edith was born Feb. 13, 1906, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Clyde E. and Elizabeth Paschal Curry. The family moved to Hamilton in 1909. She attended schools in Hamilton and Normal College in Dillon, and then worked for several years at the Western News in Hamilton.

In 1938 Edith married George Blakeslee. They made their home in Corvallis, where George was superintendent of schools and she his faithful helper. In 1945 they moved to Missoula, where she was active in the First Presbyterian Church and Electa Chapter No. 7 Order of Eastern Star. Other activities included 4-H leader, Cub Scout leader, Girl Scouts, Horizon Club, Meals on Wheels and the blood bank. Edith participated in organizing Toastmistress clubs in Missoula and Hamilton.

In February 1995 she moved to Billings to be closer to her daughter after the death of her husband.

Survivors include her daughter Barbara Muir (Bob) of Billings; grandchildren Mark Reed (Linda) of Dallas, Barbara Tindall (Bob) of Kenmore, Wash., Leslie Muir (Art Crawford) of Boise, Idaho, Scott Muir (Jill) of Boise, and Marcia Muir of Princeton, N.J.; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Lee Reed, her parents and two brothers.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Missoula.

Bernard 'Boe' Sherby

MISSOULA - Bernard Alfred Sherby, 85, of Missoula, died of heart failure Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at home.

He was born May 3, 1915, in Gananoque, Ontario, Canada, to Mary Ann Muchmore and Alfred Joseph Sherby.

On Sept. 4, 1937, he married his high-school sweetheart, Yolanda M. Sherby, in Utica, Mich. The couple lived in Michigan until 1949 when they moved to Bell Gardens, Calif., with their three children. They shared 61 years together.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Yolanda, mother Mary Ann, father Alfred and brothers John and Edward.

Bernard worked for many years in Detroit on the automobile assembly lines until 1949, when he moved his family to California. There he was employed as a warehouseman for a wholesale grocery company until his retirement. He gave up retirement for a position as a landscaper for Sunriver, Ore., receiving many commendations for his skill. He and his wife were some of the first employees at Sunriver when it was established as a resort community.

Mr. Sherby was a devout Catholic who shared a strong belief in God. He also was a friend of St. Jude Thaddeus, one of the 12 apostles and cousin of Christ. St. Jude is known as the patron saint of difficult or hopeless cases. Many of Bernard's friends can attest to his friendship.

Survivors include his son David of Yakima, Wash.; daughter Margaret L. and husband Steven J. Savage of Missoula; son Michael and wife Terry Sue of Bellingham, Wash.; grandchildren Bobby Gittens of Missoula, Karen Cervantes of Grover Beach, Calif., Kerry Lewis of Oklahoma City, Kriss Schneider and wife Jenny of Portland, Ore., and Eric Schneider and wife Jenny of Portland; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. A reception will follow in Reidy Hall. Private family committal services will be held at St. Mary's cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to the National Shrine of St. Jude, 205 W. Monroe, Chicago, IL 60606; to Hospice, c/o Partners in Home Care, 500 N. Higgins Ave., Missoula 59802; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are by Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.

Wanita E. Rodgers

MISSOULA - Nita was born Aug. 16, 1941, and passed away in her home from cancer on Aug. 12, 2000.

Nita retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1997 after a long, rewarding career.

She is survived by her husband Charlie; daughter Kimy Jo Rodgers of Lakewood, Colo.; son K. Brandon Rodgers of Missoula; mother Edith W. Enger of Missoula; sister Jeanine E. Brownell of Golden, Colo.; brother Darl K. Enger of Missoula; as well as innumerable other treasured family members and loving friends.

Nita was preceded in death by her father Harold S. Enger and brother H. Alvin Enger.

At Nita's request, there will be only a private service with close family members. She also requested that her friends please not send cards, flowers or other condolences to her family to remind them of her passing.

Yvonne M. Stephan

KALISPELL - Yvonne M. Stephan, 74, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents and dear friend Joyce Currie.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. John D. Stephan of Kalispell; sons Mark Plackett, Eric L. Platt and Lynn B. Platt; daughter Trish Walsh; grandchildren Michele Plackett, Jeff Plackett, Jason Platt, Jaymie Grow, Frank Scovel, Christina Scovel, Richard Walsh and Courtney Walsh; great-grandchildren Gabrial Wayne Grow and Lucas Michael Grow; stepchildren John William Stephan, Peggy Jean Duggan and Sarah Louise Stephan; and dear friends Linda Greenland and Tami Kain.

Visitation will be noon-6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Johnson Mortuary.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Church Episcopal. Burial will follow at Conrad Memorial cemetery.

William W. 'Roe' Holden

MISSOULA - Fourth-generation Florence native William Woodrow "Roe" Holden of Missoula met our Creator on Aug. 11, 2000.

Son of Reuben Jr. and Octave Shaffer Holden, he was born Aug. 18, 1912, on the homestead of his great-grandparents John and Sarah Shaffer, near where they donated land for the Eight Mile School. Mr. Holden was the great-grandson of Eliza Carlton Holden Lavey, for whom Carlton Creek and Larry (Lavey) Creek in the Florence-Carlton area are named.

He was the first of his generation of Holdens and the last Holden to attend the old Holden School built on land donated by his grandparents Reuben Sr. and Mary Holden. Mr. Holden graduated from Curlew School and Missoula's Modern Business College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers.

In March, Roe and Ida Manning Holden quietly shared their 65th wedding anniversary. He and Ida seldom missed Stevensville's Creamery Picnic. They actively pursued life in nature, thriving on gardening, farming and camping. With his son and grandson, each a William, Mr. Holden bonded six direct generations of Montana Holden loggers who share his lifeblood interest as a woodsman, including 20 years at White Pine Sash Co.

Those who will sorely miss Mr. Holden, besides his widow, include his children, William and Vera Holden, Sam and Loretta Massey and Mrs. Ed (Delores) Sprosky; grandchildren Bobby, Lonnie, Lori, William, Bradley, Rhonda, Rebecca, Sam, Tyron and Todd; great-grandchildren Nakia, Shawn, Benjamin, Austin, Brandee, Jerine, Carly, Bekah, Holden and Trysha; sisters Mrs. Harry (Grace) Ramer and Mrs. William (Mary) Nichols; brother Warren Holden; and numerous others.

He was preceded in death by his sister Clara and brothers Kenneth and LeRoy.

Visitation will be noon-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Malletta Family of Funeral Homes, Sunset Chapel, 7405 Mullan Road.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Sunset Memorial cemetery. A reception will follow in the funeral home's community room.
