Gayle Bauer
Gayle Carmen Bauer, of Forsyth, was welcomed into heaven on January 4, 2005 after a long struggle with cancer.
She loved and appreciated life, in spite of its trials, and was sincerely grateful for the nurses and other caregivers who provided encouragement and showed compassion during her illness.
Gayle was born on April 19, 1932 in Fairfield, Montana to Florence (Penwell) and Earl Sweedland. At a young age, she moved with her parents to her grandfather’s ranch Southeast of Forsyth. Gayle always marveled at the freedoms she enjoyed as a young girl growing up in the country. When her chores were done, she and her chums would spend hours riding their horses along Rosebud Creek and across the sagebrush flats.
She loved people and often sought those who offered adventure. One of her early mentors was her neighbor, Chauncy Groom, who taught her about hunting, trapping and fishing. Thus began a lifelong passion for any activity outdoors. She couldn’t let an October day go by without making a trip into the hills in search of that elusive trophy mule deer buck.
Gayle graduated from Rosebud High School and then attended business school in Phoenix, AZ. When she returned to Montana she enrolled at the school of Journalism at the University of Montana in Missoula. She loved to write and always insisted that “the J-School” was the best place to pursue that passion.
While at U of M, she also was a member of the riflery club and won awards at shooting competitions. She was a sharp shooter all her life. During this time, Gayle met and married
Ivan Howard of Stevensville. To that union, their daughter, Suzanne was born. The young family lived in Missoula, Butte and Chinook. Gayle and Ivan were later divorced, but remained friends.
Gayle turned her attention to working in radio and television in Billings, Montana. There, she met Walt Pierce, and the two were married
. However, their lives took different paths and they later divorced.
Throughout her life, Gayle stayed closely connected to her family and the ranch on Rosebud Creek. In the late 1960’s, she married
Vern Bauer of Forsyth. They built a home on the ranch. Vern was killed in a car accident in 1987. For the next several years, Gayle worked a caregiver at Rosebud County Medical Center in Forsyth. She made many friends and enjoyed helping people cope with life’s challenges. Her nursing skills helped her later when she retired to take care of her mother.
In her spare time, she enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, reading, cooking and entertaining.
Gayle was baptized into the Christian faith on December 28, 2004 by the Rev. John Vallie of Concordia Luthern Church in Forsyth.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Sheldon Vernon; grandson, Justin and granddaughter, Sky, all of Condon, Montana; her brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Carole Sweedland; niece, Megan and nephew, Mike, all of Forsyth; and her very special and trusted friend of 70 years, Maxine Bice of Rosebud.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2005 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Gayle asked that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Holy Rosary Hospice, 2600 Wilson Street, Miles City, MT 59301.
