Born to John and Harriet Batey while they lived on their homestead near Angela, MT. He was born in Miles City, MT on August 3, 1932. When he was three years old, his parents bought a ranch on the Rosebud Creek. He grew up on the ranch where from an early age his dad had him out on farm equipment learning the workaday operations of a ranch. When he and his brother Bobbie were old enough part of their entertainment was to shoot prairie dogs and they became crack shots. He also was an excellent skater, learning on the ice of the Rosebud Creek. Upon completion of high school, he attended one year of college at MSU. On November 7, 1950 he joined the US Navy. H had always wanted to be at sea, but the Navy saw otherwise and he spent three years at Moffett Field, CA working as an airline mechanic. Here he began a life long love of flying.
On May 29, 1956, he married Evelyn West in Bowman, ND. In 1957 they decided to move to the ranch on Rosebud Creek. Here they began to raise their four children. It was a busy time in their lives. In 1964, they moved to Hathaway, MT. Their children went to the same school that Don attended. The elements caused many disasters from hail storms to flooding, to the cold, cold winter of 64/65. In the spring of 1969 Don started working in Colstrip, MT helping build the railroad from Colstrip to Peabody Coal mine. That fall, he got work at Peabody Coal mine where he worked as a catskinner for the next 30 years, retiring in 1996.

His many interests included woodworking, leather tooling, trap shooting, airplane flying, reading, dancing and visiting with friends and neighbors. He was great for telling stories. His mom said he started telling stories as a little boy. He repeated his navy stories to anyone who would listen. He was a generous man. He opened his home to many family members including Ev’s brother, Bruce, who lived with them for ten years. He gave time and money to help fix up a mobile home for Bruce to live in. He and Ev volunteered many hours to St. Margaret Mary church in Colstrip. He was the treasurer of the local trap club for seven years and also worked to improve the site. He never seemed to miss ranching, but liked the country surroundings. Evelyn and Don were very sad when due to poor health; they had to give up dancing. They traveled many miles to Polka fests and other dancing events, often taking a grandchild with them. He loved his family; their spouses and all eleven grandchildren. He and Ev enjoyed attending all the events that his children and eventually the grandchildren were involved in. His home was a haven for the grandchildren. They spent many hours in the company of their grandparents. After retiring in 1996, he and Ev bought a camper and were going to travel and be full time RVers, but in 1997, his health began to fail. Within six years that dream ended and they bought a condo in Helena and sold the camper.
