Dr. Mark Irion
Dr. Mark Irion, age 50, of Miles City passed away on Friday, December 16, 2005 as a result of an airplane crash.
Mark was born in Miles City, Montana on August 9, 1955, the son of James Edward and Doris M. (Carter) Irion. He attended schools in Deaver, Wyoming where he graduated from High School. Mark married Mary Elizabeth Eckhardt on August 14, 1976 in Cody, Wyoming. Mark attended the University of Wyoming where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering and in 1980 with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following his schooling, he went to work for Sperry Aerospace in Phoenix, Arizona where he worked until 1985, when he was accepted into medical school at the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. He graduated in 1989. He served his residency in Youngstown, Ohio and Cleveland, Ohio. In 1993, Mark accepted the Radiology position at Holy Rosary Healthcare where he has served Eastern Montana until the time of his death.
Mark was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Miles City Hanger Club. He was a Montana Medical Association representative for Southeastern Montana. He enjoyed motorcycles, skiing, cars, woodworking, and flying. Mark was always on the leading edge of technology in the medical field.
Mark is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Irion of Miles City, MT; a son, Tyson Irion of Miles City, MT; his parents, Ed and Doris Irion of Billings, MT; a sister, Carrie Reichert and her husband Tim of Billings, MT; a brother, Dennis Irion and his wife Charlene of Billings, MT; his grandmother, Margaret Carter of Miles City, MT and several nieces and nephews.
A Special Vigil will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Healthcare Chapel. A Christmas Celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Miles City with a reception to follow at the Holy Rosary Healthcare. The family is requesting that everyone is to be dressed in Christmas attire and wearing bells is encouraged.

Mildred Wakefield Wetherelt
Mildred Wakefield Wetherelt, age 92, of Broadus passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Mildred Wakefield Wetherelt was born to Glen & Ollie Belle Irish Wakefield on October 23, 1911 at Valentine, Nebraska. Mildred was the third born daughter of seven girls. The family moved from Nebraska to settle in the Ridge/Ranch Creek area of southeastern Montana by covered wagon when Mildred was 2 years old. Her family came to the area because Uncle Thomas & Aunt Lena Irish Drane, Uncle Earl & Aunt Emma Irish Malley, and Uncle James & Aunt Edith Wharton Irish were in the area. She attended school through the 8th grade in the Ranch Creek area. After completing the 8th grade her family moved approximately 4 miles west of Broadus. She went to work at the Bakery here in Broadus and worked there until marrying Norman Wetherelt on February 1, 1933. In 1934, their first child Wayne was born and she began her full time duties as mother and caretaker of the family home. They continued living in the Broadus area until 1938 when forced by the economy and the depression their family and the Thomas & Helene Wakefield Wetherelt family, Alvin Wetherelt, Fred Wetherelt, Glenn Wetherelt, and Brunson & Georgie Wetherelt Moulton family moved to Idaho to make a living by the logging industry. They lived there for one year and returned to Broadus in 1939 and moved into a part of the Crane home. A daughter, Patsy was born in 1939 and made their family complete. In 1941, Norm built their home in Crane Acres, just west of Broadus where she lived most of her life. In 1948, they went into a partnership with Norm’s brother, Howard and purchased a ranch west of Biddle, Montana where they spent summers at the country home and the school year in Broadus. This partnership lasted a few years and then it was fulltime in Broadus where Mildred devoted her time to her family. In 1958, she worked at the Cool Retreat Drive-In for Niece Mary Irion Hodges and during the 1960’s and 1970’s she filled in at the motel for son, Wayne and family.
Mildred enjoyed playing cards, fishing, working crossword puzzles, playing horseshoes, playing pool, dancing and being with family and friends. She was especially proud of her two children and her grandchildren. From 1961-1981 she enjoyed spending part of the winters in Washington and Oregon visiting with her daughter Patsy & Cliff Bircher, and grandchildren Troy, Kelly and Tracey. Family was important and she visited her sisters, Mary, Oma & Genevieve and their families as well as Norm’s brother & his wife, Fred and Ruth Wetherelt and spent time with Niece Gladys & Barney Considine while on these winter excursions. In the 1980’s she also traveled to Arizona to visit with sister Alvena & Claude Bray. In 1994, Norm and Mildred were honored to serve as Co Grand Marshals for the 4th of July parade for living 75 years in Powder River County.
In 1996, due to declining health Mildred and Norm left their family home and moved into the Powder River Manor and shared a room and a new home. Norm passed away in February 1997 after sharing 64 years of marriage with Mildred. She continued living at the manor until departing from this world on August 29, 2004.
Mildred is survived by one son, Wayne and his wife Anita of Broadus and one daughter, Patsy and her husband Ken Stephens of Seven Mile, Ohio and her very special seven grandchildren: Brenda Wetherelt & Ken Ketterling, Wayne Wetherelt Jr., Sheri (Don) McDowell, Melody (Colin) Hanzlik, Troy Bircher, Kelly Bircher, and Tracey (Tim) Rumph. She is also survived by twelve great grandchildren: Courtney Wetherelt, Carrie Wetherelt Cox, Shannon Wetherelt, Derek McDowell, Tyson McDowell, Jason Ketterling, Morgan Hanzlik, Hailey Hanzlik, Caleb Bircher, Angela Bircher, Lindsay Rumph and Kiela Rumph; two step grandchildren, Trent McDowell and Dan McDowell. A great great grandson, and a step great great granddaughter, Maci McDowell. Numerous nephews and nieces, cousins, sister in laws and brother in laws survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norm, her parents and her six sisters; Viola Phillippi, Helene Wetherelt, Mary Davenport, Alvena Bray, Oma Trachsel and Genevieve Franklin.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Valley View cemetery in Broadus.
Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Valley View cemetery Association, C/O Anita Wetherelt or to the Powder River Memorial Committee, C/O Gladys Linville.

Nellie Shipman
Nellie Marie Shipman, age 65, of Miles City passed away at her home in Miles City on August 18, 2005.
Nellie was born on August 29, 1939 in Miles City, the daughter of Fred Henry and Martha Ellen (Martelle) Tyler. She attended schools in Miles City, graduating from Custer County District High School in 1957. Nellie worked at the Bean Bag and later at the First national Bank from 1959 until 1966. She and Berl Jay Shipman were married in August of 1966 and moved to Southern California. Shortly after, they moved back to Miles City where Nellie went to work for the First National Bank until her retirement in 1995.
While Curt and Craig were playing baseball, Nellie was active in helping out at the mother’s booth concession stand. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She spent the last seven years traveling from Miles City to Baker to be able to take care of her grandchildren during the week. She loved to sit back and relax, enjoying the company of her family and friends. She enjoyed watching the planes and nearby geese in the sky.
Nellie is survived by her husband of 39 years, Berl of Miles City, MT, two sons; Curt (Darla) Shipman of Glasgow, MT and Craig Shipman of Baker, MT, six grandchildren; Kyle Shipman, Trey Shipman, Anthony Shipman, Shelby Shipman, Darci Shipman and step-grandson; Jacob Renner, one brother; Tom Tyler of Bozeman, MT and two sisters Mildred (Ken) Espinosa of Miles City and Pearl Kiel of Miles City, MT. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 22, 2005 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will Tuesday at 10:00 am at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City, MT. Interment will follow at the Custer County cemetery in Miles City, MT.
If friends should desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society; P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368 or to the charity of ones choice. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City has been entrusted with the arrangements.

John Wesley Stone
John Wesley Stone, age 72, of Miles City, Montana passed away on August 17, 2005 in Huron, South Dakota.
John was born on November 3, 1932 in Miles City, Montana, the son of Marion and Mary Eva (Rothschiller) Stone. He was raised and attended school in Miles City, then attended high school in Hitterdal, MN. He moved back to Miles City where he married Anna Radmer on July 3, 1955 in Miles City. He worked as a bartender at the Elks and the T& C Club as a groundskeeper and also worked at the Sanitary Dairy. John retired from the dairy and remained in Miles City and did God’s work from then on. John moved to Huron, SD to be close to his family in Aril of 2005.
John loved fishing, hunting, camping, playing with his grandkids, watching high school sports and enjoyed running.
John is survived by his wife, Anna Stone of Culbertson, MT, two sons; John Stone Jr. (Kathleen) of Chandler, AZ and Frank (Maggie) Stone of Huron, SD and one daughter; Mary Amundson (Kevin) of Culbertson, three brothers; Jim (Betty) Stone of LaJunta, CO, Bob Stone of San Antonio, TX and Walter (Toni) Stone of Othello, WA, one sister Virginia Mitchell of Miles City, MT and five grandchildren; Miles Amundson, Tony Amundson, Tory Amundson, Wesley Stone and Dereck Stone and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents Marion Stone and Mary Eva Rothschiller-Hoff, his son Wayne in 1998.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 22, 2005 at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow at the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

Bertha Foote Harris
Bertha Foote Harris, Mea ah tse – he! (Appearing on the Trail Woman)
Our beloved mother, teacher, nurse, spiritual leader, entertainer, humorist and advisor, left us to journey home to Maheo’ on March 28, 2006 of natural causes. Her life on the family ranch in Muddy Creek and later in Lame Deer, MT. radiated her love for her children and family.
Bertha was born on December 21, 1919 near Ashland, MT. She was the daughter of Albert Foote, Sr. of Poplar, MT and Josette Whiteman of Lame Deer, MT. Bertha was a descendent of the Northern Cheyenne “Holy Man”, White Bull, and the niece of Wesley Whiteman, the “Last Contrary”.
Bertha grew up in the Ashland area and was educated by the Urseline Sisters at St. Labre Mission in Ashland, MT and also attended school in Bismarck, N.D.
Bertha was a traditional Cheyenne mother. In her earlier years she liked riding horses. In addition to her family she enjoyed gardening, canning, picking berries and drying meat. She also enjoyed bead work, quilting, playing cards. Although primarily a homemaker and devoted mother, in her later years she enjoyed going to pow-wows and watching her grandchildren participate in Native American dance.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Raymond Harris, Sr.; a daughter Celesta Harris Spang; a son Michael Lee Harris; two granddaughters, Tiffany Spang and Lori Alden-Diaz; four sisters, Thelma Foote Two Two, Eva Foote Rowland, Jeannette and Silvia Foote; her brothers, Eddie Sr., James, Bobbie, Gilbert, Joe Sr. and Rudolph Foote.
On July 13, 1937, she married Raymond Harris, Sr. Homa Ma haeto (Big Beaver) and made their home on their Muddy Creek ranch. The couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the time of Raymond’s death. Together they had 12 children.
Bertha is survived by her three sons, Raymond (Clara) Harris, Jr. of Lame Deer, MT, Clinton Harris (Kathy Wilson), and Matthew Harris (Connie Stewart) of Muddy Creek, MT.
Her seven daughters, Eleanor (husband, John deceased) Anderson of Greybull, WY, Patricia (Richard) Rowland, Denise (Hymn) Alexander of Muddy Creek, MT, Laura (Leon) Sioux, Roselind Maria (Earl) Charette, of Lame Deer, MT, Rosemond Ann (Charles) Messer of Birney, MT and Alberta Harris Twenty Stands of Ashland, MT.
Bertha’s sisters include: Nellie Speelman, Inez and Amy Foote all of Ashland, MT, one step-daughter, Priscilla Robinson. Other extended family include: Cheryl Rowland Sanchez, William Rowland, Richard, Adrian, and Clifford Foote all of the Lame Deer area, Michael Yellowplume, son of Michael Harris of Arapahoe, WY and Albert Foote of Poplar, MT.
Bertha was blessed with 35 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
Bertha was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Anyone who came in contact with her was touched by her humor, love and generosity. Her warmth and love will be greatly missed.

Dennis Schlinker
Dennis Jacob Schlinker, age 51 of Miles City, Montana, formerly of Terry, Montana passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at the Homestead Assisted Living in Miles City.
Dennis was born on April 10, 1953 in Terry, Montana, the son of Emil and Elsie (Kelle) Schlinker. He was raised in Terry where he lived with his parents. He enjoyed fishing with his dad on the Yellowstone River and at Intake Dam and would always come back and show how big a fish he had caught. Dennis also enjoyed reading his magazines and being around the garden and would eat the watermelon straight out of the field. In 1992, he moved to Miles City to live at Homestead Assisted Living, where he has resided ever since. While in Miles City, Dennis began working at Eastern Montana Industries and loved taking part in their activities and spending time with his friends.
Dennis is survived by his sister, Shirley of Tucson, AZ, an aunt, Leona Patrick of Deer Lodge, MT, an uncle, David Schlinker of Miles City, MT and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Emil and Elsie, and three aunts; Elsie Wolff, Pauline Sundberg, and Bertha Opp.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Eastern Montana Industries. Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 3:30 P.M. at the Custer County cemetery in the family lot. Should friends wish,

Carl W. Smith
Carl W. Smith, age 97, of Broadus went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Carl was born in a sod-roofed homestead in Mott, North Dakota on March 6, 1907 delivered by his parental grandmother who was a midwife. He was the oldest of five children born to Charles Walter Smith and Mary Agnes Stanfield Smith. The family moved to Montana in 1913 and homesteaded near Sonnette. Carl attended 1st and 2nd grade at the Mitchell School and 3rd through the 8th grade at the Bottles School. He then moved to Belfry to live with his grandmother in 1920 where he completed the 9th & 10th grades. This is where he met the love of his life Joann Sterling, and they were married on September 8, 1924. Later that year Carl and Joann, along with Joann’s mother and three brothers moved back to Sonnette where they had three children of their own.
Several years later they moved to Miles City where Carl worked at the State School and Deluxe Motors. Some years later he purchased an irrigated place at Shirley, Montana. In 1968, Carl lost Joann. In 1971, he married Patricia Brady and they later moved back to Sonnette after selling the place at Shirley. Pat then passed away in 1999. Carl then moved into the Powder River Manor a couple years later, where he enjoyed the staff, his extended family and very close friends.
Carl enjoyed visiting, fishing, hunting, rodeos, and especially visiting with friends and neighbors.
Carl is preceded in death by his wives Joann and Pat, one infant son “little” Carl, his sisters: Blanche, Catherine, Mary Agnes and one brother Sam. He is survived by a son, Joe Smith and his wife Sharon of Billings, MT; a daughter, Virginia Dice and her husband Don of Sonnette, MT; his grandchildren: Linda Dice, Tim Smith, Shannon Smith and Carl Smith; and many friends and extended family at the Powder River Manor.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials can be made to the Powder River Manor Nurse Scholarship Fund or the charity of ones choice.

Alma Jean Renz
Alma Jean Renz, 65, left this world to be with our Lord in heaven on January 1, 2005. She died due to complications following surgery. She was born March 14, 1939 in Poplar to Wilbur and Lucille Gibbs Renz.
Alma Jean graduated from Flandreau Indian School and went on to United Tribes Technical Center in Bismarck, ND. She finished her education at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, MT graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Alma Jean worked her whole life in the Poplar area at the Poplar Community Hospital, Spotted Bull Treatment Center and Juvenile Detention Center. Alma Jean’s hobbies included playing bingo, beading, reading a good book and visiting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter LuAnn, two brothers, Richard Gibbs and Harold Renz Sr., and one sister Maxine Vantine. Alma Jean is survived by her seven children, Don (Pauline) Jackson, Leslie Jackson, of Poplar, Ramona (Jerome) Jackson of Havre, Roberta Jackson of Poplar, JoAnn (Mike) Todd of Missoula, David (Shannon) Kirn, and Danielle (Noel) Crowe, of Poplar. Also surviving Alma Jean are her two sisters, Roberta Garfield and Nancy Samulson Foote, both of Poplar. Alma Jean has many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews surviving her.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 for close family and friends from 6 to 9 pm at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Poplar. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 5 at 10 am at the Poplar Activity Center with interment in the Box Elder cemetery west of Poplar. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

Roger Lee Harris
April 6, 1931 to August 5, 2004
Roger Lee Harris of Billings died of cancer on August 5, 2004, at the Hospice Hospital. He was born on April 6, 1931 to Jesse and D. Harris at the Abbey Hospital in Miles City.
He grew up in the Sonnette area and attended schools in Powder River County. He was a 1949 graduate of Custer County High School.
He worked for his dad on the LS Ranch on Pumpkin Creek until entering the U.S. Army in November 1952. Roger served in Korea and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
In 1957 he became employed by the Montana Livestock Commission as a brand inspector in Billings and later in Choteau. In the fall 1969, he began ranching east of Lewistown and remained there the winter of 1984. Following his years in the cattle business Roger lived in the Kalispell area and later returned to live in Miles City.
Roger was preceded in death by his father Jesse in 1958, mother Doris in 2000, brother Jerry in 1979 and brother Donald in 1995. He survived by two sisters, Rita Lindvold of Miles City, Mary Rose Hettinger of Billings and brother Ed of Colorado Springs.
Roger, an authentic Montana cowboy and a rancher at heart, will be missed by his family and his many friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 9, 2004 at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles city on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at t Montana State Veterans cemetery, Miles City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107.

Vera Dawson
Vera Julia, Stiller, Shand, daughter of Ben and Nellie Shand was born on July 27, 1916 at her grandfathers ranch at Calabar, Montana, near Miles City. She attended local country schools then boarded out in Miles City, were she graduated from Custer County High School.
Vera married John 'Jack' Dawson on Aug 6, 1936 in Miles City at the Presbyterian Church. Together, they made their home in Miles City until moving to the Tongue River Dam and Fort Peck Dam, where Jack worked construction. They also lived in Spokane, Washington, Kooski, Idaho, and Missoula, Mt, before returning to Thurlow to ranch with her parents in the 1940's.
Vera was an avid gardener and loved flowers, with a talent to make anything grow. She also crocheted beautiful heirlooms for her family and friends. Her two grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren were special lights of love in her life.
She was an active member of the Mary May Rebekah Lodge of Rosebud for many years. She was also a member of the Rosebud and Southeastern Montana CattleWomen and over the years gave many hours to her community through Homemakers Club and 4-H. She and Jack loved to dance and also square danced in a club. In later years, Vera's weekly trip to town included having her hair done and lunching with her friends, “The Golden Girls.”
Jack passed away in 1975 and Vera continued to live on the ranch near her daughter until 2001 when she moved to the Forsyth Nursing Home.
She is survived by one daughter, Sonja Crocker, of Thurlow. Two grandchildren, Jack Crocker, wife Kris and children, Carolee and Kinsee of Thurlow and Jody Haidle, husband Brad and children, Jesse, Ryan, and Amanda Jo of Fallon. Cousin, Ivy Wall of Priest River, Idaho.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ben and Nellie, her husband Jack and cousin Gladys Miller, who she was raised with.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 14th, at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 14th, at 10:00am in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Interment will follow in the family lot of the Forsyth cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the Rosebud Community Nursing Home.
