Landa Smith
Landa Smith, age 60, of Miles City passed away on Monday, September 29, 2008 at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Landa was born on March 4, 1948 in Miles City, Montana to Alvin and Shirley (Morton) Friesz. She attended school in Miles City. Landa enjoyed playing with her sisters growing up. She liked riding her bike and spending time outside. She met and married
Matthew L. Smith and to this marriage, two children were born. After seventeen years of marriage, they divorced. Landa loved nothing more than being a mother and grandmother. She kept very close contact with her family, whether by phone or in person. She spent many hours playing games on her computer. Landa then married
her companion of many years, Robert Ashley in January of 2008. Landa and Robert enjoyed their time together. They went out to supper together and liked to play the poker and keno machines. Landa had a personality that people were drawn to. She had a special place in her heart for everyone she met.
Landa was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ashley, her parents, and her grandson, Tristen Barnaby. She is survived by a son, Scott (Lori) Smith of Miles City, MT; a daughter, Kim (Jerry) Barnaby of Gillette, WY, a very close twin sister, Linda (Gary) Smith of Forsyth, MT; a sister Lanita Smith of Billings, MT; two grandchildren: Amanda Smith of Miles City, MT; and Kayla Barnaby of Gillette, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eastern Montana State Veteran's cemetery in Miles City.

Vickie L. Drane
Vickie L. Drane, age 60, of Broadus, MT passed away on September 29, 2008 at the Holy Rosary Heath Care in Miles City surrounded by the love of her family.
Vickie was born on August 10, 1948 in Belle Fourche, SD, to James and Vivian (Carsley) Dodd. She attended grade school in Alzada, MT and Powder River County High School in Broadus, MT. On September 23, 1964, she and Allen Drane were married
and made their home in Broadus with their two sons; Martin and Allen Jr.
Vickie's pride and joy was her family. Especially her husband, children and grandchildren. She was also a member of the Assembly of God Church in Broadus.
Vickie is survived by her husband of 44 years, Allen of Broadus, her sons and their families; Martin and Joyce Drane and their children Alzada, Lizzie and Thomas all of Moorcroft, WY and Allen and Meloni Drane Jr. and their children Raevyn, Taylore and Kylee all of Broadus, MT. She is also survived by her sister Janet (Bill) Walker of Alzada, MT. Vickie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Marvin Dodd.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home at 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm in Broadus, MT. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2008 at 1:00 pm at the Assembly of God Church in Broadus. Interment will follow in the Valley View cemetery.

Louise Popp
Louise Popp, age 89 of Broadus, Montana passed away on Monday, September 22, 2008 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Louise was born May 10, 1919 at the family home at Belle Creek, Mt., now owned by the Giacometto family. She was the daughter of John Starley and Priscilla Ellen (Bay) Gatlin. She had four brothers, Grant, William (Dubby), Don and Wesley Gatlin.
She attended grade school at Belle Creek, high school at Newell and Belle Fourche, S.D., and graduated from P.R.C.D.H.S. of Broadus in 1937. She attended Billings Business College. She was employed by Aaron Macy through the W.P.A. program in 1936-37 after school and on Saturdays. She was also employed by Ashton Jones as his secretary and bookkeeper for several years. He owned the Broadus Power Plant and also the Powder River Examiner.
She married
Verlin Popp on July 2, 1938. They worked for Bruce Orcutt on the Beaver Slide Ranch. During WW II they lived in California where Verlin served in the Navy. In 1946 they moved to Valdez, Alaska, where Verlin worked as a Ford mechanic. In the late 40's she worked as a deputy for the clerk and recorder at the court house. In 1952 they moved to the Biddle area where they ranched on Wright Creek for 24 years.
Louise spent lots of time on horseback, working cattle and training horses. She liked her horses and rodeoed a lot, winning many awards as a barrel racer. She won 52 buckles and several saddles. She also showed horses in horse shows. She won a side saddle award in 1976 and 1989. She was chosen P.R. Grandmother Queen at some time. She was P.R. Queen in 1948. In 1989 she was awarded a plaque signifying her cowboy abilities, signed by the State of Mt. and the Latigo Corp. in Billings. She went on three wagon train trips. In 1997 she was chosen cowgirl of the year by the Steven Held Foundation. She helped organize the P.R. Barrel Racers group, and participated in her last rodeo at the age of 77. In the early 80's she qualified for the National Old Timers Rodeo three times. She volunteered at the P.R. Museum for two summers. She was a member of the P.R. Manor Nursing Home Committee, which was instrumental in getting it started.
During her lifetime she took many trips. She and Verlin went to the Bahamas in 1967 and were the first paying customers on a British island there. She also went to Australia, Ireland, and an east coast fall tour. In 1975 they bought some acreage near Broadus where they had a nice home and pasture for the horses.
Verlin passed away in 1983. She moved closer to town and was there 20 some years before moving to an apartment. She enjoyed her horses, rodeos, gardening, sewing, crafts, bowling, playing cards with family and friends, and dancing.
She is survived by her children, Sonia (Lee) Fruit, of Broadus, MT and William 'Bill' (Dorothy) Popp of Mustang, OK, four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and one brother, Don (Bonnie) Gatlin. She derived much joy from all her grandchildren and lived a full rewarding life. She will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers; Grant, William (Dubby) and Wesley.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Valley View cemetery in Broadus.
Gene Ross
Gene Ross, age 68, of Imlay, NV formerly of Jordan, MT and Circle, MT passed away at home on September 23, 2008.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City, MT. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 11:00 am at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, October, 2, 2008 at 3:00 pm at the Riverview cemetery in Circle.
Erik Erickson
Ingomar, MT - Erik K. Erickson, 77, of Ingomar passed away Thursday, September 18, 2008 in the company of his family at the Billings Clinic. Erik fell ill on Monday, September 15, 2008 while striving to ensure quality care for his son Collins, currently a resident in Red Lodge.
Erik was born on April 12, 1931 in Miles City, MT, the only child of Andrew and Selma Erickson of Ingomar in east-central Montana. In his early years Erik was raised on the family ranch near Ingomar, along the fjords of Norway, and in the community of Forsyth, experiencing both his Scandinavian heritage and the arid plains of eastern Montana. Erik attended elementary school in both Ingomar and Forsyth, taking an extra year while trying to amend his Norwegian culture with the English language. He attended and graduated from high school in Forsyth in 1951 and was looking forward to the annual reunions with his special friends and classmates in Forsyth on September 19, 2008. Following high school Erik attended a technical school in Los Angeles, returning to the family ranch in 1954. On June 23, 1956 he married
his longtime sweetheart, Patricia (Patti) Lou Collins, of Forsyth, and they resided on the Erickson Land & Livestock ranch where they raised their four children, Mark, Collins, Alan, and Marni. They resided on the ranch with the assistance of several hired hands through the years, particularly Jake and Elsie Rudolph, until moving into Ingomar in 1987. At that time he started Erickson Trucking which he operated in the Ingomar/Forsyth region until his passing.
Throughout the years Erik was an active member in the northern Rosebud County region. He served nearly 20 years on the Ingomar School Board and several terms on the Forsyth High School Board, representing and fighting for the special needs of small, rural Montana schools. He was a member of the Elks in Miles City; member and president of the Tongue River Action Committee; member of the Mid-Yellowstone Electric Co-op Board; served for over 40 years as the northern Rosebud County Fire representative; 4-H leader and supporter; one of the original and continued member of the Ingomar Rodeo Club; member and initial president of the Ingomar Water Board; and the unofficial caretaker, maintenance manager, and one of the few remaining residents of the Ingomar community during the past 20 years. Erik will be remembered for always being available to help neighbor or stranger, providing a tool, spare part, or just his time, a loving partner and father, and for the care and fulfilling life he provided his son Collins. He was a man of few words, choosing instead to lead by example.
Erik was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Selma. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Patti; sons Mark (Kim Kramer), Collins, and Alan (Jane Nansel); daughter Marni (Todd Talkington); grandchildren Justin, Britnee, Jamie, Andrew, Desiree, Steven, Julissa, Janice, and Erik; a soon-to-be great granddaughter; brother in-law Jim Burt of Havre and the Burt family; step-grandson Max Whitmore; members of the Conroy family; members of the Ingomar community; and his special friends of the 1950's reunion.
Memorials may be given to the F.A.I. R. Foundation.
Rolland J. Wheadon
Rolland J. Wheadon, age 66, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Rolland was born on September 22, 1941 in Miles City, Montana, the son of Harold and Elizabeth (Scheibel) Wheadon. He attended schools in Kinsey and Miles City. Rolland worked for Randell Lumber, Midland Lumber Inc., Miles City Laundry, Holiday Gas and the Cattle Ac.
Rolland enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in his garden, and visiting with friends.
Rolland is survived by a brother, Edwin Wheadon of Miles City, MT. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Victor and Dennis.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will be held at a later date.

Robert Ley
Robert Harold Ley went to be at peace with our lord on September 16, 2008 at 11:00 pm. He died at his home, after a fifteen year battle with cancer. He was born November 2, 1926 to Alfred and Grace (Daley) Ley on the family farm south of Wibaux. He was the youngest of 4 children. He attended elementary school at the Ley and Lynn country schools. Upon entering high school in Wibaux, he gave up his education to take over at home when his father came down with Romanic Fever.
He married
Genevieve Wicka on November 19, 1949 and had three wonderful children, Roberta, Sandra & Jeffrey. Later he married
Donna Fiske Carpenter in 1961 and added four step sons to his family, Texas, Nicholes, Ronald & David Carpenter. In 1983 Bob married
the love of his life, Dorthy who shared her three children with him, Debbie, Rick & Sandie.
Bob worked on the family farm where he loved raising cattle, sheep, pigs and crops. In 1963 he went to work for the state highway department where he later became the state highway department section foreman. He retired from the state in 1988. Bob & Dorthy continued to farm and ranch until Bob felt he could no longer work that hard. In 1994 they sold the family farm to Bill & Darlene Begger. Upon doing this, they retired to Miles City, only to find retirement too boring. He took to driving beet truck during harvest & helped area farmers put up silage until he went to driving the Wibaux mail Route. He ran this route for several years. They spent their free time playing music with friends at jamborees. He finally had to give all of it up due to his illness.
Bob is preceeded in death by his parents Alfred & Grace, brothers Kenneth & Tom and just recently sister Leora, nephew Timothy, Grandson Wade Carpenter and stepdaughter Dixie Miller. He is survived by his loving wife Dorthy (Cozzens), his children Roberta (Duane) Maus of Golva ND, Sandra (Tom) Nelson of Dickinson ND, Jeffrey (special friend Sheryl Baumbun) of Rapid City SD, Tex (Sherry) Carpenter of Ryegate MT, Nichalis Carpenter of Bridger, Ronald (Judith) Carpenter of Billings, David (Diane) Carpenter of Cheyenne WY, Debbie (Bobbie) Weyer of Wibaux, Rick (Kara) Miller of Atlanta GA, Sandie (Brad) Green of Shepherd MT and numerous grand children, great grand children, nieces & nephews.
Prayer Service will be at Stevenson & Sons funeral home in Miles City on Sunday, September 21st at 6 pm. Funeral services will be at the 1st Baptist Church, 900 Palmer in Miles City on Monday, September 22nd at 2 pm. Internment will be at the Custer County cemetery. There will be a fellowship dinner to follow graveside services at the church basement. Memorials can be made to the 1st Baptist Church or to the charity of choice.
Robert Eddy
Robert Eddy, age 49, of Miles City passed away at home, after a short illness, on September 12, 2008.
Robert was born in Moorhead, Minnesota, on April 22, 1959. He attended schools in Billings and Miles City. When Robert was young, he participated in The Special Olympics and won medals in bowling and shot put. He also learned to tool leather and made some beautiful billfolds and belts.
Robert worked for Eastern Montana Industries for a few years and at the Elks Club with his sister, Marie. Some of his pastimes were riding his bike, playing pool and fishing with his brothers. But his favorite, was spending time with his family.
Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Eddy Sparks. He is survived by his mother and step-father, Betty and Eric Fridrichson of Billings, his brothers; Dave Eddy, Wayne Eddy and Dan Troy all of Miles City, sister Patti Troy Clayton of Billings and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Custer County cemetery in Miles City with the Rev. Gary Waddingham officiating.

Martha Braunbeck
Martha Braunbeck, age 91, of Miles City passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Cottonwood Care Home in Miles City.
Martha was born in Miles City, Montana on March 14, 1917, the daughter of Ira and Sarah (Butterbaugh) Yothers. Martha attended schools in Miles City where she graduated from Custer County High School. Martha married
John Jacob Braunbeck on July 16, 1938 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. To this union, four children were born: John, Larry, Martha and Joyce.
Mrs. Braunbeck worked for Baldwin Veterinary for two years.
Mrs. Braunbeck remembered everything, especially birthdays. She was a big letter writer, staying in touch with family and friends. She was a primo pie baker but was never good at disciplining the dogs. Mrs. Braunbeck loved baking, especially at Christmas when she will be remembered for her Christmas box's full of cookies. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading. She was also known to be a little stubborn.
Mrs. Braunbeck is survived by two daughters: Joyce Vera of Miles City, MT, and Martha Braly of Scottsdale, AZ; a sister, Sarah Hickle of Cascade, MT; and five grandchildren: Mallorey, J.T., Larry Jr., Colleen and Rinata. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sara and Ira Yothers, her husband John, brother Merle Yothers, two sisters: Ella Gedney and Lois Frost; and two sons: Larry & Johnny.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County cemetery.

Edward "Ed" Snider
Ed was born August 21, 1947 to John and Joyce Snider. He spent much of his younger life with his grandparents Roy and Beula Snider in Hot Springs, MT working in the flower shop and enjoying daily sourdough pancakes. Ed's high school years were spent with his dad in Hampton, MT. Here he excelled in football and pole vaulting. He shared his love and knowledge of Pole Vaulting in Colstrip, MT for many years. Ed graduated from Hamilton High School in 1965. On Oct. 19, 1966 he joined the Army with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. When Ed came home from Vietnam on Oct. 12, 1968, he had been awarded the Bronze Star for Heroism in ground combat and the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while participating in Aerial Flight. He received a second Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in ground operations against hostile forces. Ed returned home and began working with his father as a logger. On Sept. 20, 1969 he married
Julie Hughes. On Apr. 26, 1970 the first love of his life arrived in his oldest daughter Toni Snider. Ed then moved to Arizona to work with heavy equipment and drive dirt track race cars. While in Arizona he married
Pamela Fortman. On Oct. 4, 1974 the second love of his life arrived in Kimberly Snider and on Dec. 23, 1977 the third love Brandi Snider arrived. Ed was then able to come back to the mountains he loved. He spent vacations every year hunting elk and deer. After hauling the elk out by foot for several years, he began his love/hate relationship with horses, especially Stamper. Ed, Stamper, his many friends and his hunting partner and nephew Billy Hakala, had many successful trip to the mountains. Ed spent 25 years at the mine at Colstrip driving heavy equipment and spending his time off with the family and many friends whom he loved dearly. In 1998 Ed was given the final love in his life, Anita Brown. Ed spent his life enjoying and sharing the things he loved. You could always find Ed entertaining his friends with stories and tall tales, and teaching his girls all the "tricks he learned in the Army".
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jimmy Snider, his grandparents, and Pam (Fortman) Cade. He is survived by his daughters and numerous grandchildren, a brother Mike Snider and a sister Lynnie Glaspie. They are surrounded by his family and friends.

Thomas Smith
Thomas Joe "Tom" Smith, son of Carl & Dorla (Harvey) Smith passed away on December 17, 2007 at Forsyth. Tom was born on September 25, 1968 in Sheridan, Wyoming. He attended schools in Wyoming, Montana and then Ritzville, Washington where he graduated from high school. Tom attended Spokane Junior College and then entered the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Midway.
Tom excelled in athletics while in high school. He was an excellent wrestler and football player. Tom has always loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating with his family.
Tom's service in the U.S. Navy was cut short by the death of his parents in June of 1990. He then returned to Ritzville and the Spokane area where he again attended college. In 1994 Tom relocated to Forsyth, Montana to live near his aunt. He worked in building construction, spent two 'tours' on Alaskan fishing boats, and every Fall did what he loved best, guiding big game hunters. Many close friendships were formed through the years between Tom and his clients, one of whom nicknamed him 'Montana Mountain Goat.'
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Dorla Smith, and by his grandfathers Ray Harvey, Max Smith, and step-grandfather Ward Means. Also preceding Tom in death was his ever-faithful companion, his black lab Digger.
He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Dora Harvey Means of Forsyth; his paternal grandmother, Elma Smith of Holyoke, CO; his aunt Sharon Borla of Forsyth; uncle and aunt Ronnie & Sharilyn Harvey of Forsyth; uncle and aunt Randy & Jean Harvey of Sheridan, WY; and cousins Jeff Rogge of Bozeman, Jessica Harvey of Forsyth, Alex Harvey and Daniel Harvey of Sheridan, WY; and his godchildren Cassie and Hunter Johnson of Spokane, WA.

Mildred Rosella Hess
Mildred Rosella Hess, age 90, of CBR Glendive, Montana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Prairie Community Health Care Facility in Terry.
Mildred was born February 25, 1918 in Plentywood, Montana to Adolph and Minnie (Heidemann) Helmer. Her family settled in Sidney, Montana where she attended school, graduating from Sidney High. She married
Al Hess on June 8, 1935. They lived in Sidney until 1946 when they moved to Prairie County with their 3 children to farm and ranch. They were happily married
for 57 years until Al's death in 1992.
Al and Mildred were avid sport fans following their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their many sporting events. They were known as Grandpa and Grandma Hess to many of their grandchildren's friends. They also loved to have a vegetable garden.
Mildred enjoyed making quilts, crocheting afghans and embroidering dish tows and pillow cases. She especially loved getting in a tractor and doing summer fallow.
Mildred served as Prairie County Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer and also worked in the Assessors office, MDU, Prairie County Clinic and the Terry and Fallon elevators. She served as treasurer of the Fallon Sewer Board for over 30 years. She was active in 4-H and was a leader of the Neat and Nifty 4-H Club.
Mildred is survived by her son Dale (Marti) Hess of Burkburnett, TX; her daughter Dorcas (Don) Lee of Terry, MT; brother-in-law Joe (Fran) Monroe of San Jose, CA; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Al, son Dean, her parents, brother Fred (Camilla) Helmer, sister Norma Cox, grandson Derrik Lee, sister-in-law Ann (Sam) Rupp and grandson-in-law David Jones.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Terry. Private family interment will be held in the family lot of the Prairie County cemetery. A public memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Prairie County cemetery.
