Dean Edward Bailey
MISSOULA - Dean Edward Bailey, 84, passed away at home on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, surrounded by his family.
Dean was born Sept. 9, 1915, in Strevel, Idaho, to Dan and Ida Bailey. He was the youngest of eight children, all who have passed on before him. A wonderful family reunion is now taking place.
Dean married
Lillian V. Walker in 1936 and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Oct. 31. They lived the first 23 years of their marriage in Butte, Marysville and Helena. In 1959 they moved to Missoula, living in Orchard Homes for the past 40 years at 910 Como Drive.
Dean had a special ability to always make good friends of his neighbors as they moved in and out of the neighborhood. Lillian could always find him talking over the fence to one of their neighbors while watering his garden. Dean grew a big garden from the time he was 13 years old, when he decided to dig out and plant a garden in his parents' yard in Burley, Idaho.
In 1942 Dean went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Helena and retired 34 years later in 1976 as an engineer with the Burlington Northern. He always enjoyed accompanying his friend Ernie Solum to Wednesday morning coffee with retired railroaders, talking over old times.
Before going with the NP, Dean was a miner and worked in various mines in Butte and Marysville. He and his son Ken had mining claims near Marysville, and every summer for years would work their claims together. Dean was a member of the Marysville Pioneers and enjoyed telling of the fun he had playing on the Marysville baseball team in the 1930s when there was an active league among neighboring towns.
Dean loved life and was always on the go. He loved to fish the streams and lakes in Montana and fish for salmon in the Pacific. Every June for years, Lillian and Dean would take the camper and boat and head to Canyon Ferry Lake to fish from dawn to dusk in all kinds of weather. Lillian says some of the best times they ever had were at Canyon Ferry surrounded by family and friends who would come out to camp and fish with them.
Dean loved to dance, couldn't resist a polka and was always first on the dance floor; he was an avid football fan and enjoyed all sports on TV; he loved his dogs, the last three being Duke, Peppy and Junior; he prided himself on being able to witch a well with a fresh willow branch; he was a good bowler and was on the Elks and Moose teams for years; he liked to play golf and had two holes in one, the most amazing one occurring after he had lost his eyesight.
Losing his sight in 1984 was the biggest obstacle Dean had to face in his life, but all will say he survived it admirably, continuing with most of his activities in the best way he could, and taking it on the chin. Lillian and Dean were "snow birds," going to St. George, Utah, each winter for 20 years, even after Dean was blind. They could still play golf in the sun and enjoy their good friends in the RV park.
Husband, Daddy, Grandpa will be truly missed by his family, and all their love and prayers go with him on his new adventure. They are his beloved wife and caregiver Lillian; his four children and their spouses, Kenneth and Elaine Bailey of Federal Way, Wash.; Kaye and Harvey Smith of Anchorage, Alaska; Diane and Phil Sheridan of Missoula; and Linda and Ed Schild of Stevensville.
Dean's 12 grandchildren and their spouses are Dan and Tracey Bailey of Renton, Wash.; Christy and Jeff Pickering of Tacoma, Wash.; Steve Smith of Anchorage; Kent and Ina Smith of Soldotna, Alaska; Therese and Steve Gochanour of Anchorage; Toney and Jamie Sheridan of Hillsboro, Ore.; Tad and Stephanie Sheridan of Superior; Matt Sheridan of Missoula; Melissa Sheridan of Missoula; Jeffrey Palmer of Missoula; and Randy Palmer of Missoula.
His 14 great-grandchildren are Rebecca, Katie and Christopher Bailey; Sadie and Abbie Pickering; Sean Smith; Kylia Smith; Bill and Kaylin Gochanour; Tosh and Cody Sheridan; Trevor and Taylor Sheridan; and Derek Sheridan.
A special thank-you for their loving care to Ed Schild, Ariela Eshel, Hospice and the CNAs of Partners in Home Health.
A memorial service will be 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3026 South Ave. W.
