Elizabeth Ann Huss
Elizabeth Ann 'Betty' Huss of Miles City passed away at her home Sunday, December 19, 2010 after enjoying life for 90 years.
Betty was born October 24, 1920 in Rolla, North Dakota, the daughter of Lawrence Kelly and Hazel McMaster Kelly. She had one brother, Lawrence 'Junior' Kelly. She attended elementary schools in Dickinson and Miles City and was a graduate of Custer County High School in 1938. On October 22, 1941 she and Dewey Huss were married in Miles City, where she continued to reside until her death.
Betty and Dewey had four children, Dr. Mary E. Huss Walta of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dr. Lawrence D. Huss (Nancy) of Wilsonville, Oregon, George W. 'Jerry' Huss (Jana Mueller) of Miles City, and Maggie (Bob) Sampsel of Helena. To her dismay, despite her best efforts in raising them, none of her children could find productive work and all became lawyers.
Betty achieved professional status as a mother and homemaker. On Tuesdays she would clean the house so that her cleaning help that came in on Wednesday wouldn't think she was a poor housekeeper. Sheets were laundered and ironed. There was no such thing as wash-and-wear. The washing machine rumbled day and night. The ironing board was a permanent fixture. The mangle was her weapon of choice. There were no quick breakfasts and microwave lunches. Meals were cooked to order with everyone having menu choices broader than the 600 Cafe. There was always a full, hot dinner waiting whatever time you arrived in the evening. She was a gourmet cook before the word came into vogue.
Betty attended every school event, music recital, and sporting event in which her children were involved. She monitored innumerable scouting and school projects and was a tough task master. No one got away with much in the house or the neighborhood, thus earning Betty the moniker of 'Beady Eyed Betty' among her children and their neighborhood accomplices. Once they were finally extracted from the house, Betty presided over more arguments among her lawyer children than most sitting Supreme Court justices and was rarely impressed or swayed by any. In her later years, her standard response to a conversation she was tired of listening to was 'Why don't you write me a letter on that?'. Her political interests consisted mainly of biennially canceling out the vote of her staunchly conservative son, Larry.
Dewey and Betty helped form the Custer County Art & Heritage Center and she served on the Art Center Board of Directors for many years. Dewey and Betty collected Western art and traveled throughout Montana and the West attending art auctions and meeting artists. Betty pursued her interest in art by studying oil and watercolor painting under John Janutis.
Betty was a devout Catholic, attending Mass on a daily basis far beyond the point that her health permitted. She was a member of St. Ann's Circle. She volunteered many hours at the St. Vincent DePaul store, served on its board, and became an accomplished rag maker.
In 2006 she surprised everyone, including her family, by entering the Matched Bronc Ride at the Bucking Horse Sale, but finished out of the money.
When her health failed, Betty made her home with Judy and Ryan Cooper, and their daughter, Christy, at Corner Lot Care, where she received excellent care and provided lots of entertainment in return.
She was preceded in death by Dewey in 1987, her parents and her brother. In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren, their spouses and their children, Mark Walta, Esq. and Danielle DiMauro, Esq. and their children, Skylar and Brooks Walta, of Denver, Colorado; Jason Walta, Esq. and Kim Scheckner, Esq., and their children, Lily and Mila Scheckner, of Silver Spring, Maryland; Michael Walta, M.D. and Julie Silverhart, M.D., and their son, Eli Walta, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Daniel Huss and Alicia Montoya Huss, and their children, Ayla and Livia, of Parker, Colorado; Robie Huss Knox and Scott Knox, and their daughter, Audrina, of Bend, Oregon; Trevor and Donna Huss, and their child making its debut in May, 2011, of Edina, Minnesota; Matt and Elizabeth Roberts and Lane Roberts of Missoula; Vanessa Malley of Miles City; Joe Sampsel of Polson; and Marybeth Sampsel, Esq. and Paul Sullivan, Esq. of Bigfork.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Vigil service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. A Mass in Latin will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot of the Calvary cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Custer County Art Center, P.O. Box 1284, Miles City, Montana 59301 would be appreciated.

Calvin "Bud" Carter Preller
Calvin "Bud" Carter Preller, age 78, of Miles City, MT passed away at his home in Miles City on August 12, 2005.
Bud was born on May 20, 1927 in Swan River, Manitoba in Canada to Clarence and Pearl (Tibble) Preller. Bud proudly served in the Army, serving 187 consecutive days on the front lines during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, Bud returned to the family ranch. Bud married Joann Nolan on April 15, 1961 in Miles City, MT and they had three children; Mike, LaVonne, and Mary. Bud married Liz Preller in 1984.
Bud had an excellent work ethic, passed down from his father and grandfather; something he passed down to his children. His beginnings of construction started as a child on the family ranch. He kept his siblings busy packing tools from the shop and spearheaded their road building and cave diggings. As a carpenter, there was nothing he couldn't build and thrived on a challenge. Bud believed that anything was possible as long as you kept working at it.
Bud enjoyed baseball and while living in the Pine Hills, he organized, financed and managed an amateur ball team, known as the Pine Hills Baseball Team. This team played from 1946 to 1957, playing about 20 games a season against other Eastern Montana town teams. During the years of 1951 - 1952, there was no team as Bud was in the army at this time in the Korean War. When the Pine Hills team disbanded after 1957, over 50 different players had played for the team. Bud was also the baseball coach for Babe Ruth for many years.
Bud was a member of the VFW and the Honor Guard. He was an avid gardener who took great pride his garden and loved to climb into a tractor and farm. His gardens were always well maintained and provided an abundant crop. A lifelong animal lover, he always had room for the strays and orphans and hurt animals. Bud lived with his son and family for the last seven years, providing a great bonding with his grandchildren. He loved watching cartoons with the grandchildren.
Bud is survived by Liz Preller of Miles City, his children; Mike (Carrie) Preller, LaVonne (Jerry) Gulden, MT and Mary (Scott) LaFayette all of Miles City, a step-daughter, Jill Kandare, a brother Louis (Marlene) Preller of Colorado Springs, CO and sisters Dolly (Nolan) Faundrick of Colstrip, MT and Lorraine (Bud) Miller of Los Alamos, CO, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. At docking time, she always did the vaccinating, right up until the sheep were sold when she was 91. After docking, she would go home and prepare a full dinner. Lester passed away in 1995 and Cora remained on the ranch until May of 2005 when due to her health, she moved to Billings.

Cora enjoyed her yard and working with flowers. She was fortunate to be able to do her own yardwork, mowing and watering, into her 90's. Reading was important to her and she kept up with the "world" by reading and watching the news. In early years, she completed many crocheted and tatted items. Amy Van Cleave
Amy Pearl Van Cleave, age 87, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.
Amy was born May 14, 1920, in Miles City, Montana, to Peter and June Redner Martenson. Her mother passed away when Amy was ten, but not before Amy learned from her the importance of a relationship with God and friendship with others. Mothering and parenting skills were also modeled, and when her mother died, she became a loving mother to her younger brothers Bruce, Dean and Wally.
She graduated from Custer County High School in 1938 and worked at the Foster Drug Store lunch counter, baking a cake and a casserole daily. She soon caught the eye of Philip Van Cleave, a new Soil Conservation agent in Miles City, and he gathered his courage to ask her out. They married in 1939 at the first Baptist Church, honeymooned in Glacier National Park, and over the next eight years while they lived in Lewistown, Wibaux and Terry, six babies - three girls and three boys-were welcomed into their home.
Through the years numerous foster children, school children from farms and ranches near Terry and Miles City, and college students from Miles Community College found love and acceptance while living in their home. In 1970, one of these foster children was so special to them they could not part with him. They adopted him and he became their fourth son.
In 1962, Amy and Philip settled back in Miles City, living in a big house on the corner lot at 704 Washington. Besides enjoying their expanding family and their cats and dogs, gardening was an interest they shared, he growing vegetables to share with friends and he nurturing beautiful flowers which graced her home and the platform at the church countless times and which also won her blue ribbons at the Eastern Montana Fair. Another interest they shared was oil painting. They took classes together and many of their children are honored to have their paintings on their walls.
Amy and Phil's home was the gathering place for their friends, their children's friends, many visiting evangelists and missionaries, and lots of birthday and holiday parties, everyone enjoying her chicken and homemade noodles, venison and home-grown potatoes, her expandable goulash, her strawberry fruit jell-o, home canned fruit and vegetables, cinnamon rolls, Christmas sugar cookies and gingerbread men and warm friendly conversation.
She was a seamstress, tackling many difficult projects for her children, sometimes sewing matching dresses on special occasions for her three daughters. 'Nola' and 'Indian Love Call' were two of the many songs she played beautifully on the piano and to the delight of her children, she often sang old songs from her childhood and sometimes danced a fun little jig for them. For many years she was the pianist in the Terry and Miles City Wesleyan Churches, playing for worship assemblies, Sunday School and other programs.
Amy's faith in God was strong and active, and she shared God's love with her family and her friends. Several of her children felt God's call to become preaching ministers and even overseas missionaries. Her joyful life revolved around her family, her Wesleyan Church, and her countless friends. She was a great people net-worker, remembering names, faces, friends - stories and who was related to whom. Visiting with people energized her and until the last, she graciously greeted people who visited her hospital room.
She was preceded in death by her husband Philip, brother Bruce Martenson, sister-in-laws Lenore Martenson and Dawn Martenson, grandson Danny Van Cleave and his wife Emily and her great grandson Philip.
Her seven children 'rise up and call her blessed.' So do her twenty four grandchildren and we anticipate her thirty eight great grandchildren will be shaped and influenced by her life of joyful service to God, her family, and her many friends.
Her surviving children and families include daughter Janet (Paul) Turner of Rapid City, SD and children Joy (Tim) Anderson; Danny Turner, Natasha and Brittany; and Lois McGrady and Emma Chloe; son Paul (Nedra) Van Cleave of Miels City and children Denise (Dale) Erickson, John, Ian, Annalisa; Stewart Van Cleave; John (Lucy) Van Cleave, Andrew, Amber; Diane (Jonathan) Free, Rachel, Wyatt; Dorene Van Cleave, Erika, Elena; and Steve (Danyelle) Van Cleave, Phillip; son David (Donna) Van Cleave of Charles City, IA, and children Philip (Leatha) Van Cleave, Benjamin, Jedadiah, Zachariah, Christina, Jacob; Theresa (Jim) Manness, Cynthia, Micah, Erin, Wesley; Michele (Steve) Randolph, Matthew, Clayton; daughter Carol (Marcus) Brown of Tuscaloosa, AL and children Alycia, Titus, Noah; son Marty (Merry) Van Cleave of Helena and children Jason (Sarah) Van Cleave, Kyra, Elias; Melissa (Jeremy) Mueller, Miles; Aaron Van Cleave; daughter Kay (Jerry) Ludwig of Anoka, MN and children Jennifer (Jason) Hallquist, Colt; Scott (Angie) Ludwig, Dominic, Acacia; Travis (Melissa) Ludwig, Atticus; Julie Ludwig (Matt Vargas) Daimon, Luke, Abigayle; son Joe (Cyndi) Van Cleave of Bryan, TX and Avery. She is also survived by brothers Dean (Hazel) Martenson of Billings and Wally Martenson of Miles City, several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
