Michael Lindsey Scoffield
Michael Lindsey Scoffield 26 of Townsend passed away unexpectedly in a one vehicle accident on March 1, 2004.
Michael was born Sept. 8, 1977, in Townsend to Scott and Rhonda Scoffield. He was a 1995 graduate of Broadwater High School, attended college at Western Montana College, and South Dakota School of Mines.
In the Hollaway tradition, Michael was a fifth generation Broadwater County resident. During his early childhood, he lived with his mother in Colorado during the school year and spent summers and holidays with his father and stepmother in Townsend. At the age of 11, he moved back full time to his home in Townsend. Mike could be termed the "Renaissance Man." He worked for the Thompson Cattle Co. through high school, and then on to Mungas Trucking Co., Bruce Turney Construction and Septic, Turcotte Cement, McDonnell Construction, Dick Anderson Construction, and was currently working in Bozeman building homes.
Michael lived and breathed the great outdoors and was happiest when hunting, hiking, fishing or camping, and people sought Mike out for his tracking ability. One of his favorite places was the family cabin (Rillway) up Deep Creek. He was a talented artist, with wildlife being his favorite subject. Mikes numerous belt buckles reflect his profound love for Rodeo, and he thrived on the thrill of bull riding. He was on the rodeo team at Western Montana College. He was an outstanding athlete, and possessed a very competitive spirit. He excelled in football, playing in the All Star Game in Billings after graduation. He went to state in track and field in 1994 and 1995 and was a member of the last boys basketball team from Townsend that played in the state tournaments in 1995. He also loved playing baseball and softball.
Michael's biggest accomplishment and source of great pride and joy was his beautiful daughter Alexia, age 3. Their favorite saying to one another was, "I love you to the moon and back." He was a loving son and his love and admiration for his brother and sisters was profound. Not matched by many.
Growing up, a person could say that Mike put the "B" in Boy. His being a boy was intensified exponentially when he was paired up with his close childhood friends Jack Shearer and Chase Ragen. Michael was one of the original Three Musketeers. Rumor has it that traffic on Cedar Street was held at a minimum due to random debris, such as cherries, falling from the sky during their early years. Fear was not a word in his vocabulary and he never backed down from his beliefs.
Mike was very lucky to have two mothers that loved him very much. Dawn 'Duck' accepted him with a huge heart and open arms. And for his father, Michael idolized his dad with pride in every step he took. His grandparents were a large part of his life, whether hunting, fishing or just sharing warm cookies and milk. Michael lived life to the fullest as one big adventure and his smile will always be in our hearts, never to be forgotten.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Alexia; parents Scott and Dawn Scoffield of Townsend, and Rhonda and Keith Koster of Houston, Texas; brother, Eric Forrey of Townsend; sisters, Tisa Forrey of Houston, and Jennifer and Shannon Scoffield of Townsend; grandparents Dennis and Trenna Scoffield and Steve and Nona Doane; great uncles Mike and Ward, and uncles, Lindsey and Brad (Jan) Scoffield; aunts Marta (David) Cameron, and Donna (Dan) Upton; and numerous cousins.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7 at Broadwater High School in Townsend, with fellowship following in the multipurpose room. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been set up at American Federal Savings for his daughter Alexia. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday March 5 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at the Townsend Funeral Chapel.

William 'Bill' Schneider
William "Bill" Schneider, age 77, a native of Philipsburg, died on March 7, 2004, in Helena due to lung disease.
Bill was born May 1, 1926, and attended schools in Philipsburg and Butte. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and was recalled in 1951 to serve during the Korean War. Although his high school education was cut short by military service, he took great pride in returning to school much later in life to earn his GED. An avid reader, Bill enjoyed reading about history and politics.
Bill married the love of his life, Joyce Bellm, in Philipsburg on June 21, 1947. Together they raised five children and Bill's younger brother, Bob.
Bill worked in the mines around Philipsburg most of his life. A "miner's miner, " his veins ran high-grade silver, lead, zinc and manganese. Over a period of 25 years, he performed nearly every mining-related job available. The mines provided fodder for tall tales and true stories alike, mostly about the characters that occupied them. He eschewed "day's pay" and sought out contract and lease opportunities instead. Each day, Joyce sent him off to work with a kiss, a heartfelt admonition to be careful, and a lunch bucket full of delectable goodies - his bucket was the envy of many a fellow miner.
He loved to fly fish and hunt the wily bull elk. Wild game and "cotton" fish - fish he had caught - filled the Schneider's locker at Huffman Grocery. Annual hunting trips to the Powell had ritual status, first with "the boys" and later with his sons, Tom and Dan. Camping and fishing at Rock Creek with his family was Bill's idea of a perfect vacation, and it's an annual summer tradition that is carried on to this day.
In his youth, Bill enjoyed playing baseball, football and softball, and later in life became an enthusiastic golfer. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth for eight years when his sons were playing, and attended local high school sporting events for many years after.
Bill retired from the Granite County road crew in 1988. He and Joyce took a trip to Maui (which did not compare favorably with Rock Creek). For their 50th anniversary, the kids gave them a trip to Washington D.C., where the highlight was a Yankees-Orioles game at Camden Yards. To their delight, Bill and Joyce's anniversary date and Montana roots were flashed across the big screen to 50, 000 fans.
After retiring, Bill also enjoyed working on the well-received mining operation exhibit in the Granite County Museum. He had great appreciation and respect for the people who made the museum a success. In recent years, Bill was Joyce's constant companion at Big Sky Care Center in Helena and made many good friends both there and at Hunter's Pointe.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jake Schneider and Edna Haines; his parents-in-law, Earl and Esther Bellm; his beloved son, Dan Schneider, in 2002; brother Bob Schneider and sister Jean Taborski.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; son, Tom (Nancy Lee) Schneider; daughters Robbie (Denny) House, Lorri Schneider and Tammy (Joe) Olk; daughter-in-law, Debbie Schneider; grandchildren, Krista (Jay) Partridge, Kim (Oliver) Schwabe, Kerri Schneider, Travis (Kristine) House, Adam (Melissa) House, Marni Olk, Claire Schneider, Matt Schneider, Cal (Maureen) Boyle and Jackie Boyle; great-grandchildren Rebecca House, David House, April Botsch and Vallie Botsch; and his sisters, Karen (Joe) Olszewski and Fran (Ivan) Bushman.
We are sure that Bill and Dan are in heaven having a brewsky together. Dan's will be a Corona or a fine microbrew, Bill's will be a Budweiser.
The family suggests memorial donations to Big Sky Care Center, Resident Council, 2475 Winne Ave., Helena, MT 59601, or the Granite County Museum and Cultural Center, Philipsburg, MT 59858.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Philipsburg, on Thursday, March 11, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Herbert Pins as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Philipsburg cemetery. No evening wake or vigil service will be held. Services are under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Philipsburg.
