James Lewis Fulbright
James L. "Jim" Fulbright, age 68, of Ocean Park, Wash., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, from cancer.
He was born in Denton Dec. 14, 1935, to James and Louise (Birkland) Fulbright. He graduated from Helena High School and from Montana State University in Bozeman. Following service in the U.S. Army in Korea, he attended the Loyola School of Dentistry in Chicago and obtained his professional degree of D.D.S. in 1965. He practiced dentistry in Whitefish until 1975, Vancouver, Wash., Alaska and Ocean Park until his retirement in 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Joan of Ocean Park; son Glenn Fulbright of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Jennie Holland of Edmonds, Wash.; stepson, James Roman of Camas, Wash.; stepdaughters Rene Martinson of Seattle, Claudia McNamee of Buena Vista, Colo., and Jennifer Roman of Great Falls; his sister, Sharon Bailey of Collinsville, Ill., and Helena; three grandchildren and one nephew.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Penttilas Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach, Wash. A reception will follow the service in the chapel. The family suggests memorial donations in Jims memory to the South Pacific County Humane Society, 330 NE Second St., Long Beach, WA 98631.
Kenneth D. Clark
Kenneth D. Clark, age 82, of Miles City, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at a health center in Miles City.
Kenneth was born in Lebanon, S.D., July 8, 1921, to Elmer and Persis (Geist) Clark. In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and after the service he returned to work at the Milwaukee Railroad in Miles City. Kenneth married
Shirley Sather on May 31, 1941, in New Castle, Wyo. In February 1982, Kenneth retired from the railroad and he and his wife spent their time in Western Montana and Tucson, Ariz. For the last two years they made Miles City their home.
Survivors include his family, Shirley Clark of Miles City; Gary Clark and his wife, Joanne, of Miles City; Brenda Clark of Helena; Diana Clark of Helena; Amos Clark and his wife, Glady, of Red Lodge; Olive Lockie of Billings; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A private family service was held.
Vicki L. Bennett
Mrs. Vicki L. Bennett, 64, of Goldendale, Colo. died on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at her home.
She was born on Aug. 18, 1939, in Salt Lake City to Victor and Dorothy Wright.
Vicki attended schools in California and Montana and was united in marriage to Cal Bennett on May 6, 1955, in Burbank, Calif.
Cal was in the service and the family moved extensively until his retirement in 1975 when they settled in Montana. They lived in Helena until moving to Goldendale in 2003.
Vicki is survived by her husband, Cal, of Goldendale; two daughters, Cynthia McCloskey of Newport News, Va., and Teresa Bennett-Anderson of Concrete, Wash.; granddaughters, Wyanet Southard, Loreen Stevens, Alicia Eslic and Keely Garvin; grandsons, Abraham James Bennett and Doug Ryan Jr. ; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carol Lynn Record and Sandra Butcher and two brothers, Ira Wright and Skip Wright, all of Salt Lake City.
Vicki was a member of The Dalles Archery Club and enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies, hunting, fishing and bowling.
At her request no services are scheduled. Erdman Funeral Home and Cremation Service has care of arrangements.
Anna Bach Bergum
Anna Bach Bergum, age 96, of Somers died at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell on Jan. 23, 2004. She was born Sept. 24, 1907, to Nels and Minnie Bach in Houghton, Mich. Her father was a shoemaker, and Anna was raised with an older brother and a younger sister.
The family visited Denmark, where their parents were born, when Anna was a small child. In 1914 they moved to Helena, where Anna graduated from high school. She worked in a grocery store, for a coal company, and in a law office before her marriage on July 2, 1932, to John A. Bergum, a building contractor. The couple raised three children: J. Allan, David and Karen.
Anna enjoyed sewing, needle work, baking, crossword puzzles, pinochle, and mysteries. She was a member of the Rebekahs and was active in Camp Fire Girls as a leader and a board member. She belonged to St. Johns Lutheran Church in Helena.
After her husbands death on Nov. 20, 1962, Anna accepted a position at Montana State University working as a "dorm mother" from 1964 to 1970. In 1971 Anna moved to Somers to help her daughter, a teacher, raise her children. Altogether Anna has 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Anna moved to Immanuel Dec. 8, 1998.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1962; sons, J. Allan Bergum of Helena and David Bergum of Bozeman; her parents; brother Andrew Bach; and sister Dagmar Potter. Anna is survived by daughter Karen and son-in-law Ted Richardson of Somers; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at a visitation between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Friday evening, Jan. 30, in the Retz Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at Forestvale cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Home, 185 Crestline Avenue, Kalispell, MT 59901.
Dan T. Davis
Dan T. Davis passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at St. Peter's Hospital from heart failure. Dan was born in Helena March 17, 1923, to Guy L and Margaret (McDonald) Davis. He grew up on a ranch near Blossberg and followed ranching all of his life. He attended grade school at Blossberg and graduated from high school in Elliston.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served two and a half years as a hospital corpsman. While serving in San Bernardino, Calif., he met Jean Pope of Lakewood, Ohio, and they were married
in San Bernardino June 22, 1945.
Following his discharge they returned to the Avon area where he managed ranches for his uncle until 1967. They moved to the Helena Valley, purchasing a home and hay acreage which he operated until 1995. During these years he also held various jobs, including seven years as a farm machinery salesman with Zipp's Truck and Tractor of Townsend and three years as a loan officer for the Montana Livestock PCA.
After retirement Dan and Jean enjoyed an Alaska cruise trip, visits to their three daughters and several winters in Arizona. He especially enjoyed coffee at the Donut Hole and playing golf with his friends at Fox Ridge.
Dan was a member and past master of Helena Lodge No. 3 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the Montana Farm Bureau and served as Lewis and Clark County president and on state and national committees. He also served on the board of the Helena Valley Irrigation District.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 58 years; his three daughters, Linda (Gary) Heidle of Montclair, Va., Joan (Bill) Burdick of Vancouver, Wash., and Diane (Jay) Hould of Shelby. He is also survived by sisters, Rose Holmstrom of White Sulphur Springs and Lucille Schafer of Camp Hill, Penn., and brother Donald (Ava) Davis of Deer Lodge. Dan was proud grandfather to Eric Heidle of Great Falls, Carl Heidle of Spokane, Wash., and Rachel Hould of Shelby.
Visitation hours at the Retz Funeral Chapel will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 with family receiving from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at the Retz Funeral Chapel.
Burial will follow at the Montana State Veterans cemetery. There will be a reception following burial at the Shrine Consistory 15 N. Jackson.

Harry Leon Rawls
Harry Leon Rawls, 63, of Helena, died at his home on Feb. 16, 2004. He was born Aug. 13, 1940, in Coushatta, La., to George P. and Winnifred (Rigdon) Rawls. He attended school in Louisiana and served in the U.S. Army from 1959 until 1963.
He worked as a computer technician for oil companies throughout the Louisiana area. He also enjoy music and painting both water colors and oils.
Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today, at the Montana State Veterans cemetery, Fort Harrison with the Lewis and Clark Veterans Council officiating. Hagler-Anderson Funeral was entrusted with local arrangement.
Paul Roberts Saint Pierre
Paul Roberts Saint Pierre, 67, of Helena, died at home following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 30, 1936, in Valley Falls, R.I., to Joseph William and Rita (O'Brien) St. Pierre. Paul served his country in the U.S. Army from August 1954 until December 1955.
Paul is survived by distant relatives in Rhode Island.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Montana State Veterans cemetery, Fort Harrison with the Lewis and Clark Veterans Council officiating. Local arrangements were entrusted to Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home.
Erma Lois Roberts
Erma Lois Roberts died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, in Portland, Ore. She was born March 22, 1928, in Helena to Christian A. and Catherine Whipple Roberts, who preceded her in death.
Erma Lois attended grade school at Bryant School and graduated from Helena High School. She attended the University of Montana, University of Oregon and Portland State University. She received an associate degree in accounting, working the majority of her career (20 years) at Porthaven Nursing Home.
On Dec. 28, 1947, she married
Richard Budd Lauber at St. Peters Pro Cathedral in Helena. To this union, two daughters, Suzanne and Maure, were born. Lois and Richard were later divorced.
She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne and Maure Lauber; grandson Christian Roberts-Olsen, all of Portland; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Shirley Roberts of Helena, cherished nieces and nephews, several cousins and special friends, Richard and Sharon Lauber.
Peter V. Smilde
Peter V. Smilde, age 68, of Helena, died Feb. 20, 2004, at his home.
Peter was born Nov. 13, 1935, in Hague, Holland, to Lou and Trina Smilde. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1960, where he served in Vietnam and later was honorably discharged in 1962. Peter's primary occupation in life was practicing law.
Distant survivors are scattered through out the Northwest.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Montana State Veterans cemetery, Fort Harrison, with Lewis and Clark Veterans Council conducting. Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home was entrusted with local arrangements.
Ardis Ann Riedel
Ardis Ann (Bardon) Riedel, age 69, of Milwaukie, Ore., a homemaker, died Feb. 22, 2004, of natural causes.
Her funeral is 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at Stehn's Milwaukie Funeral Home.
Ardis was born June 16, 1934, in Helena. She married
James Riedel Aug. 20, 1988. He preceded her in death. Survivors include her son James McGuire and a daughter, Diane McGuire; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Clinton Abner 'Bud' McGiffin
Clinton Abner "Bud" McGiffin, age 95, died Feb. 23, 2004, of congestive heart failure. He was residing at the Personal Care Homes of Helena (Bumblebee) and was in the hospice program.
He was born in Stockett Jan. 23, 1909, to Abner and Alice Anderson McGiffin. After two years of school in Stockett, he finished grade and high school in Great Falls. During his youth he sold newspapers, delivered telegraphs and trailed cattle to summer pastures in the Smith River area.
In 1931, during the Great Depression, he walked two days to reach a promised job as a chainman on a survey crew near Benchmark. The job was there and was the beginning of a 40-year career with the Montana Highway Department. When he became a project engineer, his first job was to convert the trail from the Dearborn River to Bowman Corners into a gravel highway.
During World War II, he was in the 163rd Infantry serving in New Guinea and the Philippines for four and a half years. He was awarded a purple heart.
Following the war, he met his future wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Swanson, and knowing a good thing when he saw it, they were married
in Butte on Dec. 20, 1946. During his career, they lived in Choteau, Conrad, Valier, Wolf Creek and Great Falls.
Bud became a division maintenance engineer for the Highway Department in 1950 and a division construction engineer at the time the interstate highways were started. Because of his experience he was "grandfathered" in as a licensed civil engineer and surveyor. He received a number of highway achievement awards for new construction, including the Hardy Creek South portion of Interstate 15 near Cascade.
He began his retirement in 1971 by moving to Polson and building a home overlooking Flathead Lake. Bud built the home and Betty did the painting. While living there he enjoyed golfing, bridge and his poker club. For 10 years, Betty and Bud spent their winters in Hemet, Calif., and enjoyed trips to Europe, New England, Alaska, Canada and Mexico. In 2000, they moved to Hunters Pointe Retirement Residence in Helena and have been helped and supported by their nephew and niece-in-law, Bob and Valencia Lane.
Bud is survived by his wife; two brothers, Tom in Great Falls and Keith in Hawthorne, Calif.; and two great nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
The family wishes to acknowledge the professional and compassionate treatment and care given to Bud by his doctor and the nurses, therapists and staff of St. Peter's Hospital; by the nurses and staff of the Personal Care Homes of Helena; and the volunteers, nurses and doctor of Hospice.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Retz Funeral Home. At Bud's request no funeral or memorial services will be held. This spring the family will hold a private ceremony to plant a tree as a memorial and to scatter the ashes as he has requested. Memorials in Bud's name are suggested to Hospice of St. Peter's Hospital.
David Warren Dandro
David Warren Dandro, 66, of 103 Lake Cliff Ct., Cary, N.C., died unexpectedly on Feb. 3, 2004. He was born on August 23, 1937 in Helena to Warren and Johanna (Herold) Dandro. Dave attended Carroll College and was a graduate of Montana State University in Bozeman and the University of Chicago.
In 1956, Dave married
Mary Lee Kinsey, also from Helena, and they started their journey through the world and life together.
Dave's varied career spanned mechanical engineering, quality control, information technology, and computer consulting. This took Dave and his family all over the country, and even to Great Britain. Dave and Mary Lee settled in Cary, where Dave was active as a computer consultant. He became a member of the board of Faith Lutheran School in Raleigh and was a member of the Endowment Committee for Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cary.
Daves many passions included his family, golf, performance cars, travel and his dogs. He lived life to the fullest, with his enthusiasm and enjoyment spreading to every person he met.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Warren Dandro. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee; his daughter Diann (Tom) Bieke and two granddaughters (Grand Rapids, Mich.); his daughter, Darla Dandro (Ron Diaz) (Albuquerque, N.M.); his mother, Johanna Dandro; brother and sisters, Douglas (Andrea) Dandro, Darlene (Neil) Horne, Donna Wenger (Ken Shanholtzer) of Helena, Dolores Lehman of Las Vegas, Nev., and several nieces and nephews.
The family is having a memorial service to celebrate Daves life March 13 at The Eagles Lodge, 801 N. Fee in Helena from 2 to 4 p.m. Donations may be sent to Faith Lutheran School, 1809 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27604.
Glen Kenison
A remembrance service for Mr. Glen Kenison, age 71, will be conducted from the Anaconda Chapel of KT Riddle Funeral Homes Friday afternoon, Nov. 28, 2003, at 1:30 p.m.
Visitation will be held Friday from 1 p.m. until service time. Cremation will follow service, a graveside inurnment service with military honors will be held on a warm spring day in 2004 at the veterans section of New Hill cemetery.
Glen passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home Tuesday morning, Nov. 25, 2003, after a courageous 15-year battle against leukemia.
Glen Harold was born on Aug. 3, 1932, in Big Timber. The oldest of three children born to Harold Herbert and Alma T. (Braughton) Kenison, Glen graduated from Big Timber High School in 1951.
In December of 1951 Glen enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Rapid City, S.D., where he met Phyllis Joy Kelley and on Feb. 2, 1954, they were married
in Rapid City. Glen was discharged on Dec. 9, 1955.
After the military, Glen and his family moved to Livingston, where he worked as a logger. In 1957 Glen went to work for the Montana employment services and later for the Department of Corrections in Deer Lodge and with his military time retired with 33 years of service.
The Kenison family first came to Anaconda in 1959. Glen owned and operated his own 18-wheeler, which he drove over the road for four years. He managed the Brentwood Apartments for several years and ran a fix-it business in Anaconda. He drove school bus for Karst Stage for many years.
Glen was very active in the Anaconda community. He was a Boy Scout leader and received the Order of the Arrow award. He was a director and served on the Deer Lodge County Planning Board for 12 years. He was on the board of directors for the Southwest Credit Union and served as a member on the supervisory committee. He helped in organizing and served as fire chief and a volunteer fireman for the West Valley Volunteer Fire Department. He served on the tax appeal board.
He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and served on the church board in Anaconda and Butte. Glen was very active in the Anaconda American Legion Post # 21; he was a past commander, the commander and chaplain of American Legion District #6 and also served three terms as chaplain of the Department of Montana Veterans Affairs. He belonged to the West Valley Community Club and helped with the creation of the West Valley Park.
Glen enjoyed his garden, he took up woodworking when he was in his 60s. He snow skied and water skied and was always there when anybody needed a hand.
Memorials are requested to Pintler Hospice and/or to the donors choice.
Survivors include his loving wife, Phyllis, at the West Valley home. Also surviving are three children and spouses: Debra and Dean Glass of Artisan, N.M., Dan and Linda Kenison of Vancouver, Wash., and Bob and Barb Kenison of Montana City; eight grandchildren, Menolly and Phillip Cates, Desiree and Dana Kenison, Jeremy, and Chris, Lance and Bryan Kenison; sister Kay and husband Roger Wilkerson of Redmond, Ore.; brother Bob Kenison and wife Dee of Laramie, Wyo.; three aunts, Alice Vandervoort of Livingston, and Edith Lomeland and Ruby Pearson of Big Timber; an uncle, Lloyd Braughton and wife Irene of McLeod; three sisters-in-law, Mavis Burdick of Molbridge, S.D., Martina Christenson of Miller, S.D., and Sherry Giesel of Fargo, N.D.; along with numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Glen is preceded in death by his parents.
Services and cremation are under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.
