'Slick' Virgil Peter Auld age 58 of Ronan, Mt. passed away at St. Luke Community Hospital in Ronan on Thurs. Aug. 25, 2005 after a long illness. Virg, a member of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai tribes was born on Jan. 7, 1947 to Alice (Wakan) & Mose Auld of Elmo.
He grew up in Elmo, & attended school in Twin Bridges & then Flandreau, S.D. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran, who served his country enlisting in the U.S. Army early in 1967. Upon his honorable discharge in 1971, he attended the U of Mt.Virgil's love of the outdoors led him to numerous seasons of fire fighting & other outdoor jobs. Hunting, fishing & just walking in the woods were among his favorite pastimes.Virg had a compassionate, giving & caring personality. He rarely turned anyone away. These inner gifts made him many many friends, young & old.
He became known as 'Slick' to his friends & 'Uncle Virg' to many of the young in & around the reservation. Survivors include Edward Auld of Salt Lake City, Utah, Glenna Auld Askan, Arlee, Linda Auld, Ronan, Curtis Auld, Elmo, Carson Auld Pablo, Weemus Wilder, Ronan, Andrew Wilder, Msla, Lisa Bigby Ronan, James Bigby, St. Ignatius, 7 Francis Auld, Elmo. Other Survivors include Donna Michel, 'Mary Mary', The Askan Boys, Linda's daughters Tara & Stacy, Ed's daughters Veranda, Darnell, Darlana, & Carce's daughter Randi. Along with many cousins, aunties, uncles, friends & relatives. Preceding him in death are his mother Alice Wakan, his father Mose Auld, a sister Darlene R. Auld Wilder Bigby, & Auntie Louise Burke.Traditional wake services began Thur. evening Aug. 25, 2005, the rosary will be at 8:00pm on Fri. Aug. 26, 2005 & the funeral mass Sat. Aug. 27, 2005 at 11:00 am all services will be held at the Elmo Hall in Elmo, Mt.
Burial with military honors will follow at Dayton cemetery. Pallbearers are Mose Moulton, Orseno Walker, Brad Eneas, D.J. Joseph, Gilbert Michel, Wilbert Michel, & Gale Eneas will be the cross bearer. Arrangements under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home, Polson

Oliver Miller Bones age 83 of Ronan formerly of Polson passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at his home in Ronan from natural causes. He was born on July 21, 1923 at Shamrock, Texas to Walter and Lana Smith Bones. He lived in Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

He married Opal Leona Means and farmed in Oklahoma until 1965, before moving to the Mission Valley farming and ranching in St. Ignatius. They moved to Polson in 1968 and owned Price's Restaurant for 13 years. Oliver worked at the Lake County Court House until he retired. He loved working with horses and going to rodeos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Georgia, his wife Opal in December 2005, a sister Bernice Bones, brother Ray Bones. His daughter Gwen Nelda Bones, Ronan; a son Stan and wife Janet Bones of Big Fork, Montana, 2 grandchildren Mac and Jodie, survive him.

No services are planned at this time and cremation has taken place. Arrangements under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home and Cremation, Polson.

Amy A. Culbert, age 94, who died of natural causes, was promoted to Heaven on January 19, 2007. She was born in Ramey, MN. to Herb and Jessie Conant on November 25, 1912. The family of 11 came to Montana part way by covered wagon and when mired in mud and unable to continue came the rest of the way by train to the area South of Glacier Park where they homesteaded on the banks of the Flathead River. Amy attended grade school in Coram and High School and nurses training in Kalispell where she met George Culbert. In January of 1935 they were married and they spent 23 years traveling while George was in the Navy. These travels included China, Japan, the Philippines and Central America.

Amy was a courageous young woman who was not daunted by fear as she traveled alone with Jo to be with her husband even in dangerous times of war in the 1930's. In 1958 George retired and they made their home in Seattle for 2 years and then moved to Big Arm in 1960 where George was in Real Estate.

Amy loved her husband, family of 3 children and her extended family. Her favorite things to do were gardening, sewing, camping, fishing and traveling. She was always a hard worker but loved to have fun as well.

Amy is survived by her 3 children and their spouses: Jim and Sharon Culbert, Bill and Roberta Culbert, both of Helena and Jo and Dick Weaver of Big Arm. Her grandchildren: and their spouses: Susie and Rick Johnson, Sandi and Jeff Anderson, James and Dani Culbert, Ron and Caroline Culbert, Pam Clouds and Yvonne LaFromboise. Her great grandchildren: Jerad and Joel Anderson, Kirsten and Kristoffer Johnson, Ethan Culbert, and Connor South. Her sister, Ardis Measure of Mt. Vernon, WA, also survives Amy.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice or Gideon's. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 2, 2007 in the First Baptist Church of Polson at 11:00 am. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mildred Louise Boullt, 84, of Polson, MT. passed away on March 18, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospital, Polson.
Mildred was born on June 27, 1920 to Joseph & Hannah (Sparkman) Carter in Vinita, Oklahoma. She grew up and attended schools in Sperry, Oklahoma. She graduated from high school in Sperry.
Mildred married Theodore Lack in 1940 and they had two children- Glen & Janet. She moved to Los Angeles, Calif. & was self-employed as a restaurant owner for several years. Mildred married Clarence Boullt and together they had 2 sons- Clarence Boullt, Jr. & John Boullt. She lived in L.A. most of her life until moving to Polson.
Mildred was an avid bingo player.
She is preceded in death by her husband Clarence, 2-sisters & 1-brother.
She is survived by her four children- Glen Lack & his wife Vera of Polson, MT.
Janet Flanagan of Atlanta, Georgia, Clarence Boullt, Jr. of Southern Calif., & John Boullt & his wife Carole of Alabaster, Alabama, 11 grandchildren & numerous great grandchildren & a sister- Faye Seneski of Okiechobee, Florida.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 20th at 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. at the Grogan Funeral Home, Polson. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Rose Hills Mortuary in Whittier, Calif. with burial to follow at Rose Hills cemetery.

Shirley Rae Dupuis-Pulse, age 70, of Polson, MT. went home with Jesus after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born August 12, 1935 in St. Ignatius, Montana to Eugene and Enid Dupuis. Shirley grew up in Polson and attended school in Polson graduating from Polson High School. She traveled and lived in various places eventually moving back to Polson. She worked at S & K Electronics for a few years in the 1980's. She loved to study her bible and loved her birds, animals and garden.

Her daughter Teresa Stevens, brother Patrick DuPuis, son Joe Johns and her husband Jack Pulse preceded Shirley in death. Survived by her sister Linda Pulse of Polson, daughter Carla Norris of Polson, and Kora Lynn Johns of Polson, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

A celebration of Life will be held on Thursday April 20, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Flathead Senior Center. A reception will follow services. Family requests that you wear a favorite hat to the service. Memorials may be made to Cheerful Heart P.O. Box 688, Polson, Montana 59860. Arrangements and cremation under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory, Polson, Montana.

Freddie Blair, 64, of Polson, MT. passed away on Wed., Aug. 31st at Evergreen Health & Rehab Center, Polson.
Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Grogan Funeral Home, Polson.

Johannes Christiansen, 70, of Polson passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at St. Joseph Hospital, Polson. He was born on March 28, 1935 in Oevenum, Germany. Oevenum is a small island in the North Sea near Denmark. After finishing school, he worked on a farm. A friend of the family came to visit from America and invited John (as he is called here in the United States) to come to America, the land of many opportunities. He immigrated to the United States in 1954 and was put to work in a German delicatessen. He couldn't speak one word of English, but had to learn the language while on the job. Many times he spoke of the time when, back in Germany, he had to work several months in order to buy a suit, and when he came to the United States, he only had to work one week in order to buy a suit and even got two pair of pants with a jacket.
In New York there were many opportunities to participate in Germen Dances. One of those dances was held in Franklin Square, Long Island and the same type was held in New Jersey that a young lady by the name of Ina Diers attended. Both John and Ina lived on Long Island, and had the same common interest in dancing, and spent time together dancing. They dated for a short time and John proposed to Ina and they were married on March 24, 1957 at the Lutheran Church of our Savior, In Rego Park, New York.
John and Ina owned and operated a delicatessen store for 17 years. They lived in New York area until 1997, before retiring and moving to Prescott Valley, Arizona, where they lived for 4 1/2 years before moving to Montana in 2003. Not too long ago John said 'I love it here, this feels like going home ' especially for me, since I came from the country and farm type living.
John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, and is survived by his wife Ina and two children, a daughter Marret lives with her parents and a son John lives in Phoenix, Arizona. John and Ina don't have any grandchildren but their daughter has three dogs and a cat so they are the grandparents of her dogs and cat. 5 brothers Jens, Siegfried, Tony, George and Manfred, 2 sisters Tina Christiansen and Marrett Luders also survive him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Aaron Stinnett officiating. Inurnment will follow at Lakeview cemetery. Cremation and arrangements under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory, Polson.

Charles 'Chuck' L. Conrad, 74, of Polson, MT. & Denver, Colo. died at his Finley Point property on Sept. 12, 2007 as a result of a farming accident.
Chuck was born on April 16, 1933 in Gurley, Neb. to Carl L. & Marjorie Conrad. He was raised in the Dayton-Ranchester area on the Powder River Ranch in Wyoming. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and attended high school in Gillette. He graduated from Campbell County High School as valedictorian. He received a full ride scholarship to the University of Wyoming and graduated Sum Cu Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Geology.
Chuck went on to work for Amoco Oil until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army Map Service in Washington, D.C. and was eventually honorably discharged in 1958.
He returned to work for Amoco in Alaska. He married Sarah Burridge in 1961. He continued working for Amoco and transferred to Denver where he retired in 1989.
Chuck continued to be involved in various business ventures and eventually came to the Flathead Valley to pursue farming and operating an orchard on his land on Finley Point. He and Sarah still returned to Denver every fall. He always enjoyed sharing his produce at the local farmers market. He also enjoyed his 'hunt & lunch' buddies in Denver. He also had many dear friends & neighbors in the Polson community that loved him and he loved them.
Chuck's life motto was 'kindness, hard work & perseverance will take you through life.'
Chuck loved to hunt, fish, garden & teach his grandchildren & his nephew about geology. He was the best husband, father & grandfather. Chuck never said an unkind word about anyone.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Clayton Robert Conrad & nephew Danny Conrad.
He is survived by his wife Sarah of Polson and Denver. Daughters- Katherine Conrad of Pinedale, Wyo. & Natalie Classen & her husband Roger of Denver. Grandchildren- Ahna, Kaycee & Tomara all of Pinedale, Wyo. He is also survived by his best buddy that rode shotgun, his redbone hound 'General Sherman'.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Museum of Natural History in Denver in Chuck's name.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Sept. 17th at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Parish in Sheridan, Wyo. Interment with military honors will follow at Sheridan City cemetery. A reception will follow the services.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19th at 10:30 at the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Wheatridge, Colorado. A reception will follow the services.
Arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home, Polson & Champion-Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan, Wyo.

Jerry Burland, age 51 of Uniontown, WA, left us on Thursday April 7, 2005 to be with his mother Betty Stinger-Smith, his father Willard Burland, and his brother Jim Burland. He was a loving husband, father, brother and son. Always smiling and helping others. Jerry leaves us with lots of love and smiles. He loved all of his children and will be remembered by his loving and radiant smile, his joy of living and his words of wisdom to all of us. Jerry, God has not only given you your legs back, but has now given you wings.
We all love you and will carry you in our hearts forever. He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver Elizabeth Ann Moon-Burland of Uniontown, WA, his sons Wayne White of South Carolina, his step-father Gary E. Smith of Pomeroy, Wa, his brothers Richard Burland of Cheney, WA and Elmer Burland of Spokane, WA, his sisters Patsy Pulse of Polson, MT and Yuette Smiley of Great Falls, MT. No public services are planned. A public reception will be held on Saturday April 16, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Flathead Senior Citizen Center of Polson.
Arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory of Polson.

Michael B. Dooley
SSG Michael B. Dooley II, 44, passed away of natural causes at his home in Woods Bay, Montana on Friday December 21, 2007.
Mike was born in Bakersfield, CA on July 10, 1963. His father, Michael B. Dooley, was killed in Vietnam in 1968 on his third tour as a Green Beret. Shortly after his father's death, 5 year old Michael was adopted by his aunt & uncle Colleen and Matt Dooley of Proctor, MT. He attended grade school in Proctor and graduated from Polson High School in 1982.
Mike proudly served his country in the military for several years. After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He also served in the U.S. Army, and most recently in the Montana National Guard. He had just returned home in November from a one year tour as a M.P. in Iraq. He also had worked with the Lake County Sheriff's office, Polson Police Department, St. Ignatius Police Department and most recently Semi Tool in Kalispell. He married Karisa Knievel in Polson, Montana on December 3, 2004. Mike is survived by his wife Kari and stepchildren, Krisalea, Jordan, and Melody; his children: son Michael B. Dooley III currently on his first tour of duty in Iraq, daughters Caitlin and Kelli in Oregon; his birth mother, Shirley, in California; his adopted family: mother, Colleen Dooley of Polson; brothers, Tracy and wife Cindy Dooley of Polson, Dennis Dooley and fiancé Angie Kaatz of Proctor, Mark and wife Jacque Dooley of Polson, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his natural father Michael B. Dooley and his adopted father Matthew E. Dooley who also proudly served their country. Mike enjoyed the Montana way of life, law enforcement, and the military. He was a true professional who prided himself in the service of his country and the communities he served. Cremation will take place under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory in Polson. A private family service will be held at a later date. Cards or letters to his immediate family can be sent to P.O. Box 2192 Bigfork, MT 59911. A fund to assist his family has been set up at First Interstate Bank PO Box 1299 Polson, MT 59860 in the name of Karisa Dooley.

Donald Claffey, age 74, passed away on Monday October 22, 2007 at his home in Polson. Don was born on April 10, 1933 at Polson, MT to Ernest and Ruby Claffey. He attended school in Polson and graduated from Polson High School in 1952. Don took his freshman year of high school off to 'work in the woods.' Don served his country with the US Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1954. Don was active with the Ironworker Union and worked the Alaskan Pipeline. He was a 'snowbird' ironworker working in California and Arizona during the winter. Don and Karen spent the last eight winters at their home in Mohave Valley, Arizona. Don was a Lifetime member of the VFW and a Cootie member. He also belonged to the National Horseshoe Pitching Association, and loved to pitch horseshoes and compete in tournaments. Don also helped with the Polson Boxing Club and was quite accomplished (commented before commentators did). Rodeo kept Don from playing college basketball and a promising acting career. Don had quite a 'hook shot' and loved basketball. He had several parts in 26 Men. If anyone has access to this movie, Karen would love to have a copy. Don enjoyed watching sports on TV. He loved working with horses and was very willing and anxious to tackle all. Their herd would follow the pied piper with his pocket full of pellets. Don loved to create anything out of nothing. He created metal tree picture frames that could not be recreated. His parents Ernest and Ruby Claffey, and his only son 'K.O.' Kenneth Orion Claffey preceded Don in death. He is survived by his wife Karen of Polson, his stepsons Erik (Anisa) and Edward Lanphier of Plainfield, IL, his granddaughters Breena, Whitney, and Leah and numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held on Friday October 26, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall with Deacon Wes Vert officiating. A reception will follow the services at the VFW Hall. Memorials may be made in Don's name to the Humane Society in your area, Lake County Search & Rescue, or the charity of your choice. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home & Crematory.

Nadine Helen Couture, 68, of Pablo, MT. died on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at her home in Pablo.
Nadine was born on February 4, 1938 in St. Ignatius, MT. to Basil & Vivian DuCharme. She grew up and attended schools in Polson and graduated from Polson High School. She participated in acrobats and tap danced while in high school.
She married Roy Couture and they had 4 children together and later divorced.
Nadine attended business school in Missoula for 2 years and eventually worked as an administrative assistant for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She continued to work at the BIA for over 20 years.
Nadine loved to hunt & Fish. She also liked to travel, bowl and spend time with family & friends.
Nadine was active in 4-H in her younger days and was an enrolled member of the Confedated Salish & Kootenai Tribe.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother- Gary DuCharme.
She is survived by her children- Wes Couture & his wife Linda of Billings, MT, Tammy Couture of Reno, NV, Ronnie Couture of Pablo & Herbie Couture & his wife Betty of Great Falls, MT.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren.
She is survived by her sisters- Carol Tenney & Myrna Johnson of Polson and brothers- Harold 'Bud' DuCharme of Polson, Ken 'Mick' DuCharme of Seattle, WA, Herb DuCharme of Evaro, Butch DuCharme of L.A., Calif., Toke DuCharme, Beeb DuCharme, George DuCharme, George DuCharme & John DuCharme all of Polson.
Wake services will begin on Wednesday evening at her home in Pablo and will continue until Friday at 6:00 p.m. Rosary will be held on Friday, March 10th at 8:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Val Zadilla officiating.
Cremation will follow the services and interment of cremains will be held at Lakeview cemetery on Monday, March 13th at 1:00 p.m.
Arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home, Polson.

Ronald 'Roy' J. Couture, 71, of Ronan, MT. passed away on April 4, 2006 after an eighteen month battle with lung cancer at St. Luke Community Hospital in Ronan.
Roy was born on July 30, 1934 in St. Ignatius, MT. to Joseph & Susie (Andrews) Couture. He mostly grew up in Dayton & Elmo but had lived in several places throughout the west. He attended schools at the Ursalines, Flandreau in South Dakota and graduated from Polson High School.
Roy served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. After his discharge from the military he returned to the Flathead Reservation.
Roy married Nadine Ducharme and four children were born to this union.He and Nadine later divorced. He married Janice Cotton on May 23, 1962 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Roy worked in the woods his whole life. He logged for Bud Clark, Jack Long & Dick Grile for most of his career. He also cut Christmas trees, firewood, post & poles & railroad ties. Roy also worked at the Lake County Sheriff's Department as a jailer. Roy fought forest fires until he was 56 years old. Roy was still working until a week before his death.
He enjoyed hunting, working on cars, attending Pow Wows and spending time with & raising his grandchildren. Roy really enjoyed working in the family concession stand at Pow wow's.
He spent his last 18 years working on his biggest dream which was to see that all of his grandchildren be enrolled members of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter- Kathleen Sue Couture, granddaughter- Cameron Hendrickson, grandson- Lester Couture, sister- Regina Matt & Brother- John Thomas Couture.
He is survived by his wife- Janice of Ronan, MT.
His children & their spouses: Wes Couture and wife Linda of Billings, Tammy Couture of Reno, NV, Ronnie Couture of Pablo & Herbie Couture & wife Betty of Great Falls, MT.
Ronnie (Carmel) Couture of Ronan, Joe Couture of Ronan, Shannon (Scott) Maxwell of Lewistown, MT., Todd (Gwen) Couture of Charlo, MT. & Shelly (Shane) Hendrickson of Valley Creek he is also survived by several grandchildren & great grandchildren.
Brothers & sisters- Rita cannon of Polson, Rhoda (Joe) Whitehorse of Rocky Boy, MT, Judy Phillips of Pablo, Richard (Annette) Couture of Elmo, Butch (Barb) Couture of Parshell, & Aunt Helen Charlo of Elmo, MT.
Wake services will begin on Thursday, April 6th at 6:00 p.m. at the Elmo Hall. Rosary services will be held on Friday, April 7th at 8:00 p.m. at the hall. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, April 8th at 11:00 a.m. at the Elmo Hall with Father Val Zdilla officiating. Military Honors burial will follow at the Dayton cemetery.
Arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.
