Irma Rose Horne
Irma Rose Horne, age 98, of Townsend, passed away surrounded by her loving family Monday morning, Feb. 10, 2003, at Broadwater Health Center in Townsend
Irma Rose was born in Helena Aug. 24, 1904, to Curtis and Mathilda (Born) Platter. She attended schools in Helena and moved to Townsend when she married
her husband, James Warren Horne, on Nov. 26, 1924. He preceded her in death in 1977.
She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and loved attending church services.
Her hobbies included crafts of knitting sweaters and crocheting afghans for all her children. Irma loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughters, Billie Marie Thornes of White Sulphur Springs, Bonnie Burrows of Anaconda, Dorothy Nelson of Rio Rancho, N.M., Lorna Rose Flynn of Butte, Cora Lee Horne of Townsend, Gerry Wight of Judith Gap, Sherry Gray of Alberton, and Vickie Cameron of Martinsdale; sons, Jay Horne of Great Falls, Ray Horne of Townsend and Paddy Horne of Post Falls, Idaho; 33 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Connors Funeral Home, 212 Broadway, Townsend. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 101 S. Walnut in Townsend. The Rev. Joseph Byrne will be the celebrant. Interment will be at Holy Cross cemetery in the family plot. Connors Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Helen Matteucci
Helen Matteucci, 83, died peacefully at Big Sky Care Center on Feb. 8, 2003. Helen was born in Great Falls on Nov. 16, 1919, to Swedish immigrants Emil and Mary Erickson. She graduated from Great Falls High School in 1938, and married
Pete Matteucci in Havre in 1940. They were married
for 60 years.
Helen started work later in life as the branch manager of the Great Falls AAA office and had a long career with Prudential Life Insurance. She was stricken with severe rheumatoid arthritis shortly after retirement. But despite the disease, she maintained, and even heightened, her sense of joy and humor in every aspect of her life. She was constantly singing, humming, talking and laughing.
She was one of three children, second in line to her sister and lifelong friend, Millie, with whom she spent countless hours painting beautiful watercolors. She loved music, dancing, good food, flowers and animals.
Her children are forever grateful to have had such a beautiful, talented and loving mother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but we will treasure our memories of her.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Mildred Reynolds and brother Art Erickson.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Art and Sandy Matteucci of Monarch and Texas; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Hal Harper of Helena; grandsons, Jeff (Deb) and Scott, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 610 2nd Ave. N. in Great Falls with the Rev. George Harper and the Rev. Kathy Young officiating.

Carl ZurMuehlen
Carl ZurMuehlen died of natural causes Feb. 7, 2003, at Big Sky Care Center.
He was born in Deer Lodge on Oct. 18, 1920, to Gertrude and Carl ZurMuehlen. Carl graduated from Powell County High School in 1938. He entered what was then known as Montana State in Missoula, graduating in business administration. Carl entered the Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a sergeant. He received the American Theatre Service, Good Conduct and Victory medals. Carl married
Dorothy (Nook) Russell in 1945. They had one son, Jack, who preceded him in death.
Carl came to Helena in 1945 to work for the Montana Corporation License Tax Department until 1950 when he left to work with Paul Brazier as a staff accountant. Carl became a partner of that firm in 1951. The partnership dissolved Oct. 1, 1957, when he and George Anderson formed Anderson and ZurMuehlen, a new partnership. He continued working there until the late 1980s when he retired.
Carl, until recent months, was a dedicated swimmer, having swum for the university swim team as a student. He played tennis and was active in the Helena Chamber of Commerce Red Coats. For many years, Carl would spend the summer months fishing at his cabin on Seeley Lake.
Carl is survived by his wife; daughter-in-law Annie ZurMuehlen (Missoula); grandson Karl ZurMuehlen (Seeley Lake); granddaughter Elizabeth ZurMuehlen (Missoula); and step-grandchildren, Michael and his wife Mary Ellinghouse (Missoula); Jenny Lindemer and her husband, Mike (Seeley Lake); and Joe Ellinghouse (Seeley Lake); and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in the spring. A reception for family, friends and clients will be held at the Helena office of Anderson ZurMuehlen & Co. at the Great Northern Town Center on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Anderson ZurMuehlen Endowment (Scholarship) at the University of Montana or to the donors choice.
Elda M.J. Brekke Lindsay
Elda M.J. (Brekke) Lindsay, 87, of Helena, died Feb. 6, 2003, at St. Peters Hospital in Helena.
Elda was born in Harlem, Aug. 7, 1915, to Henry and Laura (Hedline) Brekke. Elda devoted her life to loving and taking care of others including, but not limited to, her siblings, her children, grandchildren, and even her great-grandchildren. Grandmas hands were made for helping and that is just what she did. She put to good use the talents that God gave her and greatly blessed were those that received! She could cook, bake and sew like no one else we knew and would gladly work to pass that on to any of us. She always had a special talent for writing poetry as well, and shared this with her family and members of her church. Grandma always had a special way with words.
Elda was preceded in death by two daughters, Sharon Lindsay and Betty Plummer, and one son, Steven Lindsay. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Alden, Henry and Stanley Brekke, and twin sisters who died at birth.
She is survived by two sons, Larry (Stephanie), and Wesley (Jackie); and five daughters, Eleanor Lindsay, Evelyn (Gene) McDonald, Patsy Evans, Doris (Butch) Brown and Candace (Gregg) Lucas. Two sisters, Laura Malley and Myrtle Cameron, also survive her. Her son-in-law, Stanley Plummer, and her daughter-in-law, Beth Lindsay, along with multitudes of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive her.
Elda spent many hours crafting items for worthy causes, and she greatly enjoyed her time spent with the ladies of the Home League.
Her family and friends will miss her loving and happy-go-lucky attitude during hard times and good times. All who knew her will sadly miss her.
A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Salvation Army Church in Helena with Envoy Steve Staneart presiding.

Marie A. Young
A woman of strength and courage, Marie A. Young, age 85, passed away Feb. 8, 2003. She was born in Lancaster, Pa. Before retirement, Marie loved her work as manager of the Conestoga Country Club in Lancaster.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Sandra Richardson, and her son-in-law, Alan, of Spokane, Wash. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of life gathering on Sunday, Feb. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at 2439 Sunlight Circle in Helena. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Oral Cancer Foundation, 3419 Via Lido #205, Newport Beach, CA 92663. Retz Funeral Home is caring for arrangements.
Evelyn Vetsch
Evelyn Vetsch was born June 5, 1924. She and her late husband Glen (Lucky) moved to Elliston in 1964. He preceded her in death in June 1992. Evelyn was an avid outdoors person who loved to hunt, fish and go camping.
Her favorite hobbies were her yard and flowers, reading and photography. It was not uncommon to find Evie wandering the fields in Elliston with her camera, waiting for the perfect picture. She was a gifted storyteller and could add humor to every adventure.
She passed away quietly Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at St. Peters Hospital knowing her friends and neighbors loved her. She will be greatly missed.
Mary A. Smith
Mary A. Smith, longtime East Helena resident, passed away Feb. 10, 2003, at Rocky Mountain Care Center where she has been a resident for the past six years. She was born Aug. 3, 1904, to John Kovach Smith and Frances Starc Smith in East Helena. She attended the old St. Anns School on Pacific Street.
At the age of 15, Mary went to work for her father in the new Smiths Bar and worked there for over 55 years. In later years they had a confectionery and served ice cream, banana splits and other treats. In due time Mary began to sell her famous 25 cent hamburgers. Families came from Helena and school children on their lunch break came to enjoy her milkshakes, hamburgers and the curbside service.
Mary contributed her longevity to hard work at Smiths Bar where she put in 16 hours a day. The family home was located on Pacific Street directly across the tracks from the smelter smokestack where Mary resided until 1997 when, at the age of 93, she became a resident of Rocky Mountain Care Center.
During World War II many soldiers stationed at Fort Harrison became her friends and in later years returned to visit her.
She was a lifelong member of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.
Mary was instrumental in the formation of the East Helena Senior Citizen Dinner Club and was their secretary-treasurer for many years. She was a 50-year member of St. Louis Lodge #43, American Fraternal Union, an 80-year member of SNPJ Slovenian Lodge #143, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #10010.
She traveled to Slovenia several times where she visited relatives on both her fathers and mothers sides of the family. They have continued to correspond with her over the years. She was known far and wide for her friendliness and sense of humor and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters and their spouses: John J. (Mary) Smith Jr., Frank L. (Frances) Smith, Charles M. (Caroline) Smith, Edward A. (Charlotte) Smith, Frances K. (John) Rigler, Winifred P. Smith, Ferdinand F. Smith, Anton M. Smith and Jennie Smith, and two nephews, Joseph W. and Robert J. Smith.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Francis (Kanky) Smith, East Helena; Isabel Smith of Helena; Kenneth Smith, Deadwood, S.D.; Ron (Rene) Smith, Helena; Carol (Ron) Colyar, Martinez, Calif.; Luddie (Zud) Rigler, Charles (Zip) (Iris) Rigler and Lucille (Mike) Stump, all of East Helena; great nieces and nephews Christopher Smith, Wash.; Curtis Smith, Calif.; Cheryl Glenn, N.M.; Caroline Jones, Colo.; Cathy Whipple, Suzy Uceda, Carrie Mackay and Michael Colyar of Calif.; Vonnie Strong and Joanne Rigler, East Helena; Linda Williams, N.Y.; Bob Stump, Idaho; Tom Stump, Bozeman; Jean Strainer, East Helena; Marla Thompson, Townsend; Angela Smith, Idaho; Curtis, Leslie and Stan Smith, Calif.; Neil Smith, Calif.; Mark Smith, Oregon; Cassandra Smith; Helena; Dave Duel, East Helena, and Roger and Larry Duel, Ariz.; and numerous great-great nieces and nephews and one great-great-great niece.
Mary will also be missed by a dear, dedicated lifelong friend, Elsie Jones, who came weekly to play bingo with her at the Care Center.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Retz Funeral Home. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, at the Church, with interment to follow at St. Anns cemetery, East Helena.

Charles G. Baum
Charles G. Baum, age 84, died Feb. 8, 2003, at his residence in Winston. Born Sept. 30, 1918, in Nelson to Elizabeth "Elsie" and George Baum, he was the first of two sons.
Traveling by horse and buggy, Charles attended school at Winston. He and his wife, Barbara, were married
Oct. 17, 1946, and were blessed with five children. Charles was in logging and his family owned and operated a sawmill. They sold lumber to the mines in Winston and surrounding area. He enjoyed fishing the creeks, and Sunday drives. Charles could build or repair anything in wood, metal or such. He broke many horses and handled livestock his entire life.
One of the first volunteer firemen of Winston, Charles had built a fire truck and was with the Winston Fire Department for more than 30 years. A longtime member of the Eagles, he also served on the Winston School Board.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Harry "Clarence" Baum, and wife Barbara R. Baum. Surviving him are sons Darrell Baum, Doug (JoAnne) Baum, Kenneth Baum, Ray (Barbara) Baum and daughter Nancy (Bill) Kane; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service in celebration of his life is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Retz Funeral Home. A reception will follow at the VFW Post 10010 in East Helena. Morris J. Tronrud
Morris J. Tronrud, 73, of Helena, formerly of Melville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at his residence. Morris was born Oct. 20, 1929, to Morris and Isolene Myrtle (Kepler) Tronrud in Big Timber.
Morris attended Melville school graduating from Sweetgrass County High School in 1946. He married
Shirley Margaret Boylan on June 15, 1952, in Absarokee. They ranched in Melville until moving to Helena in 1989.
He was a 4-H leader for 25 years and an active member of the Jaycees. Morris had his own dance band and played in Billings, Harlowton, Big Timber and surrounding areas. Morris was a member of the Melville Lutheran Church.
Morris was preceded in death by his parents, son Morris Elton Tronrud in 1994, and his sister, Betty Weinfurter. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Helena; sons, Michael Tronrud of Helena and Mark Tronrud of Billings; daughter, Audrey Clark of Lewistown; and one granddaughter, Stacy Clark.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Big Timber Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Holmlund officiating. Graveside committal will follow in Mountain View cemetery. Lowry Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
Martin James Powers
Martin James Powers, 42, of Sparks, Nev., passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003. He was born Sept. 4, 1960, in Helena where he attended school and graduated from Capital High School. He moved to Salt Lake City, where he lived before moving to Sparks.
He was a devoted father, caring son, dedicated brother, an awesome grandfather, a loving husband as well as a wonderful friend to many.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Martin B. and Nell M. Powers and twin brother Michael John Powers.
He is survived by wife, Diana; son, Jeremy; daughters, Nicole and Lauren; and grandson, Deshaun, all of Sparks; mother, Donna (Steve) Thompson; sisters, Jennifer, Johanna, and Jeanne and their families, all of Salt Lake City; father, Martin Powers of Helena; brother, Marcus, of Billings; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in the Helena, Boulder and Townsend areas; and dear friend and brother-in-spirit, Marvin Davis, of Salt Lake City.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Helena. Burial will immediately follow at Resurrection cemetery alongside his brother, Michael.

Carol E. Sanders
Carol E. Sanders died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in Helena. Carol was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Spokane, Wash.
She lived and worked in Montana most of her adult life in the health care profession, including caring for her mother for several years. Carol retired in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tonette Sanders, in 1971 and her mother, Mona Schultze, in 1999. Surviving are sons, Leonard Ingram of Mountain View, Alaska, and Mark Sanders of Helena; sisters, Connie Boyd of Laurel and Kay Banks of Mesa, Ariz. Also surviving are longtime friends and caregivers Carole and Carl Carlson and family; Rod Hains of Helena; John and Deborah Lewis of Great Falls; Katie and Chuck Whisonant and family; Ken and Leah Mitchell of Missoula; and her lifelong friend Sandy Sanders of Helena. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Kenneth J. McClintock
Kenneth Joseph McClintock, 69, of Great Falls, a retired railroad foreman and Navy Reserves veteran, died of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Peace Hospice.
Ken was born June 3, 1933, in Great Falls, and graduated from Boys Central in Butte. He served in the Navy Reserves for four years and worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for over 30 years. After retiring, he dedicated his life to AA and spiritual groups.
He was a 20-year member of AA, a cursillo graduate and leader, and a member of Dairy Queen Mens Prayer Group. He inspired others to follow their spiritual paths, visited nursing homes, group homes and homeless people.
Survivors include daughters, Kathleen M. Northburg of Brainerd, Minn., Shelly V. David of Tacoma, Wash., and Lisa K. Sturzen of Graham, Wash.; a son, Donald J. McClintock of Tacoma; a sister, Donna M. Stiers of Missoula; a brother, Raymond McClintock of Soda Springs, Calif.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Hilda McClintock.
Visitation is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Croxford & Sons Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 5:30 p.m. at Croxfords. Memorial Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Josephs Catholic Church, with burial of ashes in Mount Olivet cemetery.
