Glen A. Kowski
Glen A. Kowski, 52, of Belgrade died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001. He was born June 12, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Francis Stanley and Anna Marie (Frank) Kowski.
He was raised and educated in South Milwaukee and graduated from South Milwaukee High School and the University of Wisconsin - Stephen Point.
Kenyon-Noble Lumber and Hardware employed Glen for many years.
He will be remembered for his easy-going, helpful nature and his love and devotion to his cats, Lucy and Zelda.
Survivors include his father, Francis S. Kowski of South Milwaukee, Wis.; sisters, Kay Graetz of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Gail Trapp of South Milwaukee, Wis.; his brother, Robert (Kathleen) Kowski of Greensboro, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Julie (Brian) Kerkman, Marie (Mark) Lipowski, Amanda Morris, Tim (Ann Marie) Trapp, Ivan (Beth) Kowski; grandnephews and nieces, Brenton, Cassandra, Sarah, Emily and Rachel.
Glen was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Marie Kowski.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 10, at Dahl Funeral Chapel.
Laura A. Hicks
Laura A. Hicks, 87, of Helena died Aug. 4, 2001. Laura had been residing at Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman for the past five years.
Laura A. Hicks was born Jan. 13, 1914, near Wolf Creek to Frank and Avis Six. Laura spent her early childhood on a ranch where her father worked. She graduated from high school in Great Falls in 1932.
During the years she worked at the Rainbow Dam, she met her future husband, Wayne Hicks.
On April 3, 1937, Laura married Wayne Hicks and moved to Helena. In 1950, Wayne and Laura bought the Carter Oil Distributor business, with Laura working as the bookkeeper. She continued to work in this business until 1971, when Wayne retired as the Exxon distributor.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, Miriam Chapter 1.
Laura loved flowers and watching birds. She enjoyed sewing and cooking. She especially loved doing things with her family, grandchildren, close friends and neighbors, always striving to please others. Laura's gentle spirit embraced those who knew her. She loved to laugh, and enjoyed a positive outlook on life.
Laura is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Kathryn and Jim Biegel of Bozeman, Carole and Paul Phass of Bel Air, Md., Nancy and Dave Bierwagen of Billings; grandchildren, Kristi Biegel of Bozeman, Shawna Biegel of Lynnwood, Wash., Marce Phass Lawrence of Sparks, Md., Holly Phass of New York, N.Y., Greg Phass of Staten Island, N.Y., Jason Phass of Havre de Grace, Md., Kevin Smith of Billings, Jeanne Smith Esser of Bellingham, Wash., Julie Smith Tesky of Manhattan; and eight great-grandchildren.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne; and her sister, Sally Mulligan.
Services were scheduled Friday, Aug. 10, at Retz Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Marianne Niesen officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

William A. Dewayne
Art DeWayne, 71, died Aug. 4, 2001, in California from a lingering illness. He was born on May 21, 1930, in Bozeman, and raised by his grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Allen.
Art attended local schools and graduated in 1948 from Gallatin County High School, where he had been active in basketball and football. He attended Montana State College for two years, and was employed by the local Safeway store.
In 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Lorene Funk.
In 1957, he moved his family to California and settled in Northern California. He was employed by the state of California as a computer programmer analyst until his retirement in 1984.
His hobbies included RVing and building houses. His greatest reward was assisting his family with building and remodeling their homes. He loved spending the winters in Arizona for the past 13 years.
Art is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lorene; and three children: Daniel of Chico, Calif., James of San Diego, and Kathleen Mullaney of Yuba City, Calif. He leaves three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Allen, of the Phoenix area; and a sister, Margaret Tomita of Coos Bay, Ore.
At his request, no services will be held. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be given to the donor's favorite charity.
George L. Smith
George Lemuel Smith, 75, died in Bozeman on Aug. 7, 2001. He was born Jan. 6, 1926, in Lower Lahave, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, to Benjamin Rupert and Ellen Lee (Creaser) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Riverport, Nova Scotia.
As a young man, he worked several years on the fishing boats. He joined the Merchant Marines of Canada, and served with the Canadian Army in Europe during World War II. He later traveled between the United States and Canada, working primarily as a miner.
He married Phyllis M. (McGinnis) Cline in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Sept. 4, 1972. The couple lived in Denver for two years, in Grand Junction, Colo., and then moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where they purchased a motel. They retired in 1986 and moved to Bozeman where they resided at Legion Villa.
George enjoyed painting by numbers, working crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader. While residing at Mountain View Care Center, he served as the mailman, using his electric cart.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jason, in 1984; and his wife, Phyllis, in 1992.
He is survived by his children: Ginny (Ben) Bury of Belgrade; Tom (Naomi) McGinnis of Twin Falls, Idaho; Tim (Marion) McGinnis of Billings; and Barb (Mitch) Kilmer of Belgrade; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lamont (Agnes) Smith of Nova Scotia.
A memorial gathering was held at the home of his daughter, Ginny Bury, on Monday, Aug. 13.
Esther E. Peterson
Esther E. Peterson, 93, died Aug. 3, 2001, in Tualatin, Ore.
She was born May 29, 1908, in Helena.
Esther was married to Edward Peterson on Feb. 14, 1934, in Billings. They lived in King City, Ore., for 12 years, and she raised her family in Fort Benton.
She was a homemaker, a member of the Eastern Star and the Esther Club of King City.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Martin Peterson.
Esther is survived by her husband, Edward Peterson of Tualatin, Ore; son, John E. Peterson of Beaverton, Ore; daughter, Carol A. Burke of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Lynn DeCorsey of Lakeland, Minn.; three grandsons, Edward Peterson of San Diego, Robert Peterson of Haleiwa, Hawaii, and Donald Peterson of Hillsboro, Ore.; and one great-granddaughter, Sara Jean DeCorsey.
Private family services will be held; private inurnment will be in Fort Benton.
