William Kukes
Funeral services for William Kukes, 75, West Fargo, N.D., are Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at 11 a.m. in West Funeral Home Chapel, West Fargo. The Rev. Peter Schmidt is officiating. Music is provided by soloist Peter Erickson and organist Vicki Schmidt. Pallbearers are Cliff Rott, John Thoemke, Melvin Olson, Ted Steckler, James Casias and Jim Brewer. The burial is at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, N.D.
William Kukes died Friday, Sept. 24, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
William was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Sidney, where he grew up and attended school.Bill helped on the family farm for a time, before he married Mavis Hovde on Oct. 19, 1958, Williston, N.D. He worked road construction in Williston, before moving to Fargo in 1958, where he worked for Collins and Sons and Bradshaw Construction until his retirement in 1984.
Survivors include his wife; his sons, William and Shawn, both of West Fargo; daughters, Beth (James) Brewer, Vicky Kukes and Jana Meidinger, all of West Fargo; step-sons, David Sanderson and Terry Sanderson, both of Lewistown, Kent (Kim) Sanderson of Solen, N.D.; step-daughter, Karen (Nadeem) Farqui of Humble, Texas; four grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; brother, John Kukes of Hardin; sisters, Katie Kukes and Emma Fulton, both of Portland, Ore., and Mary Kukes and Elizabeth Adler, both of Billings.
Harmon R. Pigg
Funeral services for Harmon R. Pigg, 85, Sidney, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999 at the Bible Baptist Church, Sidney, with Pastor Michael Backhaus officiating. Music will be provided by Richard and Dave Engstrom, organist Ruth Pust and pianist Evelyn Engstrom. Casketbearers will be Gene Nice, Bryan Pigg, Brent Fladmo, Brian Kimble, J. Nelson Wood and Brian Sturgis. Honorary casketbearers will be Dr. Edward Bergin, Richard Engstrom, Margaret Erickson, Don Lind, Ervin Schelske, Bill Macke, Jim Knapp, Wendell Elliott, Bud Simard, Ed Schilling and all of his other friends. Ushers will be Wally Binder, Rich Will, Gale Pust, Bill Schilling and Mike Roiger. Interment will be in the Sidney Cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Harmon died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Mercy Medical Center, Williston.
Harmon was born Aug. 3, 1914 in Mt. Vernon, Ill. to parents Verner L. and Kate (Davis) Pigg. His father was the Chief of Police there. After graduation, he worked as a welder for Mt. Vernon Car Mfg. Co. and on the Big Inch Pipeline. On Aug. 3, 1940, Harmon was united in marriage to Charlotte Ruth Ragan in Mt. Vernon. Their two children, John and Judy, were born while they lived in Mt. Vernon. In 1943, Harmon enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Philippines during World War II.
In 1951, he moved with his family to Sidney to work as an independent landman in the oil business, a job that he thoroughly enjoyed. He worked for many different oil companies leasing and checking records all over the Williston Basin. He retired due to heart surgery in 1983. For about 16 years after he retired, he and Charlotte spent their winters in Arizona. Harmon trusted Christ as his Savior and enjoyed attending church and Bible studies after his retirement. His favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.
Harmon especially loved his family and had the biggest heart in the world. We all love you very much and will greatly miss you, your smile and the twinkle in your eye. We look forward to the time when we will meet again in glory! Harmon was a member of the AAPL, IPAA, NDLA, Elks and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Harmon is survived by his wife, Charlotte, Sidney; son, John V. (Anita) Pigg, Sidney; daughter, Judy K. Fladmo, Sidney; sister, Velma Ruth (Charlie) Wood, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; three grandchildren, Brenda (Brian) Sturgis, Sidney, Brent Fladmo, Las Vegas, Nev., and Bryan R. Pigg, Owatonna, Minn.; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Merlin "Bud" Berwick
Funeral services for Merlin "Bud" Berwick, 73, Bainville, are Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at 11 a.m., MDT, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson. The Rev. Al Beyer is officiating and burial is at the Bainville Cemetery. Friends may call at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Williston Wednesday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
Merlin died Sunday, Sept. 26, at his home in Bainville.
He was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Nelson County, N.D., to Selma and Monger Berwick. Bud lived at McVille, N.D., until he moved with his parents to Bainville, where he graduated from high school in 1943 and then entered the Army. He served in the South Pacific and was stationed in Korea. After his discharge in 1947, he attended college at the University of Montana in Missoula.
He married Florence Vandeberg June 3, 1950, and began farming. His love of farming was a life-long venue.
After a long career, Bud retired from the postal service in 1985, but continued delivering the rural mail in Bainville with his wife until April, 1999.
Bud enjoyed canning, his cookbook collection and preparing and eating gourmet cuisine. He loved the outdoors and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; his mother, Selma; brothers, Vernon (Hazel) of Coupeville, Wash., Dean (Sharon) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Dale (Pearl) of Bainville; sisters, Lois (John) Kuester of Williston and Carole Beard of Williston; three daughters, Marsha Crusch Picard of Bainville, Susan Davidson of Shepherd and Tina Denowh of Rapid City, S.D.; three sons, Mark of Moorhead, Minn., Mathew of Culbertson and Martin of Bainville; as well as 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Monger; his daughter, Beverly, and his granddaughter, Kayla.
Bertha Sundheim
Bertha Sundheim, 85, of Williston, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Bethel Home in Williston.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Williston is in charge of arrangements.
Dallas Ullman
Funeral services for Dallas Ullman, 86, Fairview, are Friday, Oct. 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sidney. Interment is at Richland Memorial Park in Sidney. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
Dallas died Monday, Sept. 27, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Irvin M. Steinberg
Funeral services for Irvin M. Steinberg, 50, Sidney, are Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at 1 p.m., at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Chapel, Minot, N.D.Visitation is one hour prior to the service at Thompsen-Larson Funeral Home. Burial will take place at the Minot Hebrew Cemetery. Arrangements are by Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Minot.
Irvin died Saturday, Oct. 30 at his home of natural causes. He was born July 16, 1949 in Minot, to Louis and Wilma "Billie" (Underwood) Steinberg. He was reared and educated in Minot.
He moved to Sidney in the 1980's. He worked in food service for the Lalonde Hotel in Sidney. His major life achievements were getting along with others, honesty, modesty, a sense of gratitude and appreciation for what he had and did not have, and his respect of others. It was especially important to Irv that he not be a burden on others due to his remarkable sense for independence and autonomy, which served him well in life.
Irv invested his time not in educational or business pursuits, but to a lifetime of learning to live and observe, never to judge or condemn.
Survivors include brothers, Alan Lewis Steinberg of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and Leon Jerome Steinberg of Kapaa Kauai, Hawaii. His parents precede him in death.
Fern Russell Ophus
Fern Russell Ophus, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at a hospital in Great Falls of complications from diabetes. Memorial services were held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Hinsdale United Methodist Church in Hinsdale. The family requests memorials be sent to the American Diabetes Association at P.O. Box 2411, Great Falls, Mont. 59403.
Born on Nov. 20, 1923, in Glasgow, Fern graduated from Glasgow High School in 1941 and attended Northern Montana College in Havre. She married Helmer Ophus in 1943 in Raleigh, N.C. From 1943 to 1947, she was a secretary for the Corp of Engineers at Fort Peck. In 1947, Helmer and Fern purchased the town of Thoeny and Thoeny Ranch, where they ranched, ran the post office and store, and Fern was a correspondent for the Glasgow Courier. The family moved to Hinsdale in 1960, where they continued to ranch, and Fern was very active in the community. Moving to Sidney in 1970, they established and operated Ophus and Associates Real Estate Agency. They retired to Great Falls in 1993 to be closer to family. First and foremost, Fern enjoyed being a mother and homemaker and her many friends. She was a Sunday School teacher at the Hinsdale United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Christian Women's Club, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Charter Member of the Cowbells, Sons of Norway, Women of the Moose, Business Professional Women's Society and leader of Cub Scouts and 4-H. She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Kathryn McColly (Ken) of Gainesville, Texas; Carolyn Wendell (Dick) of Great Falls; Trudy Ophus of San Diego, Calif.; a son Hal Ophus (Anne-Marie) of Valleyford, Wash.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Stall (Gene) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three brothers, James Russell (Lorna) of Tampa, Fla.; Walter (Joan) and Max Russell (Myrna) of Bozeman.
Gladys Boyce
Funeral services for Gladys Boyce, 84, Sidney, were Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Church of Nazarene, Sidney, with Pastor James D. Miller officiating. Music was provided by Don Josephson and Judith Miller. Casketbearers were Gladys' grandsons, Jim Boyce, Gerald Boyce, Warren Boyce, Robert Flint, Lane Boyce and Parris Pewonka. Ushers were Joel Boyce and Brian Tiesen. Interment was at the Richland Memorial Park, Sidney, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Gladys died Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
She was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Belfield, N.D., to Ada (Hollister) and Robert Gray. Gladys remained there until age 3, when her mother passed away. At this time, Gladys and her sister were taken to Mapleton, Iowa to live with their grandparents. She remained there until the age of 13, when she came back to Belfield to live with her father. She went to high school and graduated at Fyburg, N.D. In 1934, she went to work at the Moore Ranch on the Little Missouri River, where she met Francis Boyce and later married Frances Sept. 21, 1935, in Miles City. They continued to live in the Trotters, N.D., area until 1962, when they moved into Sidney.
Gladys was an active member of the Church of Nazarene and the Women of the Moose. Also, she was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Montana Water Well Drillers Association. She enjoyed doing needle work and also enjoyed her flower gardens, grandchildren and traveling.
Survivors include her sons, George (Shirley) Boyce of Sidney, Fred (Mary) Boyce of Sidney, Robert (Kathy) Boyce of Bozeman, Richard (Pam) Boyce of Angleton, Texas and Donald (Carrie) Boyce of Rapid City, S.D.; sister, Phyllis Gray of Sidney; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Francis; a daughter-in-law, Betty Fern Boyce; and great-granddaughter,Kalena Starkey.
Edna Krugler
Funeral services for Edna Krugler, 85, of Vancourver, Wash., formerly of Sidney, were Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Memorial Gardens Funeal Chapel, Vancouver. Private interment was conducted.
Edna died Monday, Nov. 1. She was born May 27, 1914. She was a grocery clerk for Safeway for 25 years. Her husband, Oran Krugler, preceded her in death in 1991.
Survivors include eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
David Amundson
Memorial services for David Amundson, 46, Sidney, will be Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at 3 p.m., at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Huskamp officiating. Honorary casketbearers were his daughter, Catherine Amundson; brothers, Leroy, Mark and Craig Amundson; and sister, Joan Tommerup. Arrangements are under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
David died Friday, Oct. 29, at the Sidney Health Center.
He was born March 3, 1953, in Watford City, N.D.., to Carol (Larsen) and LeRoy "Bud" A. Amundson. The family moved to Columbus, N.D., and lived there for a year before moving to Ray, N.D., where David started schools. In 1961, the family moved to Sidney, where David attended Sidney High School. He worked with Buster McMullin, doing carpenter work. He married Maureen Schultz in 1977. They made their home in Sidney, and David continued to do carpenter work.
He enjoyed fishing, reading and playing darts.
David is survived by his daughter, Catherine Amundson of Kansas City, Mo.; his mother, Carol Amundson of Sidney; brothers, LeRoy Amundson, Jr., of Sidney, Mark Amundson of Great Falls and Craig Amundson of Wahpeton, N.D.; a sister, Joan (Douglas) Tommerup of Plentywood; a grandson, Gabriel Amundson of Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his father, LeRoy "Bud" Amundson.
Henry Buxbaum
Funeral services for Henry Buxbaum, 80, of Glendive, were Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, with Pastor Howard Schreibeis officiating. Interment with military honors was at the Dawson Memorial Cemetery, Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Henry died Friday, Feb. 25 at the Eastern Montana Veteran's Home in Glendive.
He was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Minatare, Neb. to Adam and Kathryn (Haas) Buxbaum Sr. He received his education in Nebraska. Henry served in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged Dec. 10, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wis.
Henry returned to Glendive following his discharge,where he helped out on the farms of his brothers,sisters and nephews for many years. Henry loved painting, making things and tinkering. Henry had been a resident of the Eastern Montana Veterans Home since Jan. 20, 1997.
Henry is survived by one sister, Marie Schoeneman of Nyssa, Ore., and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jake Buxbaum, John Buxbaum and Adam Buxbaum; and four sisters, Lena Buxbaum at age 12, Olinda Martin, Pauline Lundgren and Lydia Heimbuch.
Norman Paulson
Memorial services for Norman Lee Paulson, 87, of Sidney, were held Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Clayton Funeral Home in Poplar. Interment was at the Poplar City Cemetery. Cremation rights were accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to charity of donors choice.
Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Norman died Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings.
Norman was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Williston, N.D., to Nellie Irene Todd Paulson and Alfred Danton Paulson.
He married Elizabeth Rosemary Costello Jan. 6, 1940, at All Saints Rectory, Keokuk, Iowa. She preceded him in death May 1, 1986.
Norman married Jean Mae Nelson Hagen Oct. 10, 1987, in Conrad.
Survivors include his wife of Sidney; children, Mary Gertrude Aulgur of Galesburg, Ill., Myles Alfred Paulson of New York City, N.Y.; and his step-daughters, JoAnn Marie Hagen of Kenai, Alaska; and grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter.
One daughter, Christine Marie Casey, preceded him in death.
Bertha "Betty" Pierce
Funeral services for Bertha "Betty" Pierce, 73, Glendive, were Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive. A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 21 at the Chapel of Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home. Pastor James Hageman officiated. Interment followed at the Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Betty died Friday, Feb. 18 at the Glendive Medical Center.
She was born, the oldest of nine children, Jan. 18, 1927, in Belvidere, Ill., to John and Feryle (Ackerman) Schafman. She was raised and educated in Beloit, Ill. She married Billy C. Pierce June 30, 1944, in Miles City, and they made their home in Glendive. She enjoyed time spent at their summer home in Hungry Horse. She also liked visiting on the phone, game show channels, reading, doing crafts, holiday dinners with family, packing a big lunch to go fishing and camping, and her devoted pet, Zac.
Survivors include her two sons, Warren (Darla) of Glendive and Doug (Claudia) of Sidney; a daughter, Sheila (Bill) Hartl of Sidney; six grandchildren, Brad (Christina) Hartl of Beaufort, S.C., Jeremy Hartl of Sidney, Dawn Pierce and Jenny Pierce, both of Glendive, and Jessica Pierce and Jenna Pierce, both of Sidney; a great-grandson, Hunter Joseph Pierce Hartl; four brothers, Charles Schafman of Fla., John Schafman of Idaho, Thomas Schafman of Texas and Ralph Schafman of Washington; two sisters, Alice Webley and Nancy Meyer, both of Wisconsin; numerous aunts and uncles including Art and Janet Ackerman and Ruby Ackerman of Glendive; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Billy C., her parents and two sisters.

Graveside services for Susan A. "Sue" Opsta Mantz, 62, formerly of Sidney, will be Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 2 p.m., at the Niche Wall, Sidney Cemetery. Friends and classmates are welcome. Reception will follow at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church basement, Sidney.
