Ann Solan Freeman, 82

ANACONDA — Ann M. Freeman died Thursday in the Anaconda Community Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 5, 1920, to Thomas and Anne (Rodgers) Solan, who came to Anaconda from County Mayo and County Donegal, Ireland. Ann attended local schools and graduated from Anaconda High 1939.

For one year, Ann attended Western Montana College, then married Bill Freeman of Philipsburg in 1940. They eventually moved to Hamilton, where the couple owned and operated the Freeman Apartments until 1960.

Ann moved back to Anaconda and briefly worked for Smith Construction, then became employed in the diet kitchen of the Galen TB Sanitarium. Even though the demands of the job could be stressful, Ann often spoke in great fondness of her many co-workers as she shared their good times and hard times. Ann continued to keep in contact with her colleagues after she retired in the early 1970s. For many years, luncheons and dinners reunited retirees and those still working.

From early childhood, Ann developed a special love for animals. As a youngster she owned a horse named Rex (who tried to make her stay on this planet rather short), and two dogs named Blackie and Brownie, who gave her endless love and devotion.

Over the years, Ann adopted various and assorted strays, providing them with a loving home. However, there are pets who deserve honorable mention. A German shepherd named Ted remained with Ann until his last days, dying of cancer. Her wonderful black labs included Sheba and Elizabeth Taylor and her ever-faithful collie named Lassie all reside with her in heaven.

"Today I take care of her dog ‘Lucky,' who can claim the Best Dog Ever award."

He visited her in the nursing home and has waited patiently for her return. The numerous cats did not miss a minute of love and nurturing, either.

Ann loved her home in Opportunity and enjoyed gardening, working in her lawn, planting flowers and inviting her friends for coffee and holiday dinners. At various times during her life, Ann enjoyed playing golf, and fishing the various streams and rivers in Hamilton. But most of all, Ann loved bowling! She joined a bowling team in Hamilton and then years later joined the lady bowlers in Anaconda. Jones-Angus sponsored these ladies and they were the proud recipients of many trophies. Ann has a collection of her own personal awards and trophies she has treasured throughout the years. This eagerness about sports began while in high school, where Ann excelled earning the nickname of "Eagle Eye." Not a game existed that didn't bring out that feisty, competitive, winning spirit.

"As her only child, I will deeply miss my mother. She had a great sense of humor, a mischievous smile, and is truly the best friend I ever had. We often enjoyed a morning cup of tea and conversations which ran the gamut from motherly ‘advice' to local hearsay, to politics and, of course, an update on her beloved Chicago Bulls. Both of us ended up being single parents, but her devotion, kindness, compassion and endless years of help to me and her grandson can only be described as incredible.

I thank her in my prayers every day."

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Anne Solan; brothers, Anthony Solan and Charles Solan; sister, Mary Rouse and Jim Rouse Sr.; niece, Patty Rouse; and nephews, Roger Rouse, Jerry Solan, baby Charles Solan; sister-in-law, Joan Boyer Smith; and former husband, Bill Freeman all of Anaconda.

Survivors include her daughter, Ilona Schlosser and husband Dave of Anaconda; grandson, Cory Beck of Helena; brother, Michael (Patricia) Solan of Santa Fe, N.M.; and brother, James (Margaret) Solan of Aberdeen, Wash.

The evening vigil will be Wednesday at 7 at the Longfellow Finnegan Funeral Home; the funeral Mass is Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Church.

Memorials: Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, Shodair Children's Hospital or a humane society of your choice.
