Marlene Maloney, 44

SHERIDAN — Marlene K. Maloney died Saturday in Millerton Lake, Calif.

She was born April 7, 1959, in Great Falls to Michael and Monica (Smail) Maloney. As a young girl she moved to Sheridan, where she was raised and graduated high school in 1978. Marlene worked at the Stockman Bar and later cooked at Huck's restaurant in West Yellowstone. She graduated from the University of Montana-Missoula and moved to Reno, Nev., where she worked three years in casino offices, briefly for a doctor, and in landscaping until her death.

She enjoyed camping, reading, and antiquing.

Her grandparents preceded Marlene in death.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Monica Maloney, Sheridan; sister, Mary (Gary) Dalton of Helena and their children Kelsey and Craig; brother, Mike (Bonita) Maloney of Heber Springs, Ark., and their children Jenna and Wesley Caffee; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and special friend, Jim Ponder.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ruby Valley Ambulance Service at Sheridan.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Laurin with the Rev. Ed Stupca officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurin Cemetery.

Jeanette Ulstad, 86

ANACONDA — Funeral services for Jeanette Ulstad will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Hope Lutheran Church with Pastor Ted Hamann officiating. Interment will follow in New Hill Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Melvin.

She died peacefully Monday evening in Community Nursing Home of Anaconda, surrounded by her family.

Jeanette was born April 30, 1917, in Cooperstown, N.D., one of seven children born to Herman and Annie (Rowley) Michaelis. She was raised on the family farm in Cooperstown and received her education in Cooperstown.

On June 10, 1936, Jeanette married Melvin A. Ulstad. They moved to Anaconda in 1937. Jeanette was known to many as "Nanny Jen." She worked at St. Ann's Hospital in Anaconda and at the Galen State Hospital, from which she retired.

"Nanny Jen" enjoyed bowling, playing cards, was an avid sports fan and never missed a single sporting event of her grandchildren. She was a fan of the Celtics, Jazz, Packers and Grizzlies. She did volunteer work at the Anaconda Thrift Center. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, its WELCA organization and Mary Martha Circle. Jeanette belonged to the Anaconda Women's Bowling Association and carried a 165 bowling average.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are requested to Hope Lutheran Church and/or Anaconda Pintler Hospice.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bill Masella of Anaconda, Sharon and Bill Johns of Spokane, Wash.; son, Kermit Ulstad of Anaconda; sisters, Lydia Johnson and Marcella Urness of Cooperstown, and Grace Beattie of Anaconda; eight grandchildren and spouses, Allen and Tammie Ulstad, Kelly and Pat Hermes, Kim Masella, Moe Walsh, Dawn and Ken Smith, Rick Stavanja, Deb and Harold Froeiss, and Billie Jo Stavanja; 10 great-grandchildren, Rick Ulstad, Nichole and husband Andrew Zimmerman, Jordan and Taylor Hermes, Jacob, Haleigh, and Peyton Smith, Rikki and Ryan Crossman, and Meagan Stavanja; special sisters-in-law, Sada Ulstad and Pauline Ulstad of Anaconda, and Emily Bucholz of Kalispell; numerous nieces and nephews.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband Melvin, who died May 12, 1971, brothers Harold, Raymond and Richard Michaelis, son-in-law Bill Stavanja, numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Services are under the care of KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.

Hilda Pewe, 91

DILLON — Hilda Pewe of Dillon died Monday in Evergreen Butte Health and Rehabilitation.

She was born July 14, 1912, to John and Margaret Pewe at McHenry, N.D.

When she was almost 6, the family moved to Juanita, N.D., where she attended a rural school for one year. The next year Hilda went to attend the school in Juanita, from which she gradated in 1930.

In 1941 she came to Dillon with the Hazlett family. In March she began to work full time for the J.C. Penney Co. and stayed there 33½ years until she retired in 1976.

She joined the First Baptist Church in March 1941 and has been a member ever since. She served as deaconess for six years, two years as financial secretary, vice-president of the Women's Missionary Group.

One of the highlights of her life was her yearly visits to North Dakota via Greyhound bus where she visited her family and friends. She always spent Christmas with Bill and Gloria Hazlett and their eight children and their families. In the early years she enjoyed going to California to visit Keith Pewe and his family.

She had three sisters, Alma Adams, Ella Grenz and Frieda Hazlett and three brothers, Gustav, Carl and Ernie Pewe, all of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by nephews, Keith and Debbie Pewe, of California, Bill and Gloria Hazlett, Ramsay, Rod and Arlene McHam, Idaho, and nieces, Beverly Coragiolo, South Dakota, Marilyn Reiger, Sharon Schmielarz of Minnesota, Betty Morgan, Louisiana; numerous great-nieces and -nephews.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Brundage Funeral Home with funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

David Rennie, 86

David Stewart Rennie died peacefully on Monday in Conrad after an extended illness.

He was surrounded by family members including his loving wife, Dorothy, and his stepdaughter, Gayle, and her husband, Kirk Mycke.

David was born in Quincy, Mass., and was raised primarily in the New York City area. He served as a navigator and bombardier in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was discharged from the Air Force Reserve in Great Falls.

After the war, David lived for many years in Anaconda and retired from the Postal Service. David was married to Grace Elizabeth (Beth) Rennie, nee Marchion, who preceded him in death, and they had one son, Paul. In his later years, David moved to Helena, and found marital happiness once again when he wed Dorothy Christianson.

David will be remembered by many friends for his quick smile, twinkling eyes and wonderful sense of humor. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, spending many weekends camping, fishing, and backpacking until his last years. Building on his military experience, David was also an aviation enthusiast, and finally, in his 70s, achieved a long-standing dream of studying to become a pilot. He was a long-time member of the Anaconda Amateur Radio Club, was active in his church life, and a member of the VFW, the American Legion and of the Anaconda Toastmasters.

David was preceded in death by his parents, David Sr. and Joan; two sisters, Myrtle and Mina, and his wife, Beth.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Christianson) Rennie of Helena; son and son-in-law, Paul and Darin Heitt-Rennie of Belgrade, and by Dorothy's seven children, their spouses, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being made through Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home, 650 Logan St., Helena. Friends may visit beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Interment with military honors will be at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Harrison, immediately after the funeral. This is followed by a bereavement dinner at the American Legion Post No. 2, 3095 Villard Ave., Helena.

A memorial service will also be held in Anaconda at a time and place to be announced.

Guadalupe Navarro, 66

ANACONDA — Guadalupe "Lupe" Navarro died Saturday evening in Community Hospital of Anaconda from a heart attack.

She was born Jan. 8, 1937, at Dos Cavaves, Ariz., to Refugio and Christine (Ramos) Perez. Guadalupe married Butte native Eulojio Navarro on July 23, 1954, near Los Angeles and lived in California. After Eulojio's retirement in 1992 they moved to Anaconda/ Opportunity; Eulojio died Nov. 23, 1998.

Lupe enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, watching movies, playing games and fishing. She loved nature, gardening, animals and always had an open door for neighborhood children. She belonged to the Anaconda Catholic Community.

Survivors include her children, Angela Navarro, Covina, Calif., Joe Navarro and Theresa DeTonacour, Opportunity, Cynthia Navarro, Opportunity; granddaughter, Kristina Baier, North Hollywood, Calif.; great-granddaughter, Rachel Ellis, California; sisters, Marcella (Phil) Gamponia, La Puente, Calif., Joanne Elvarez, Duarte, Calif.; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Her son Anthony Navarro preceded her in death Aug. 6, 1988.

Visitation/wake is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in KT Riddle Funeral Homes with parish vigil service at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Jeff Benusa officiating. Cremation follows with inurnment at a later date in New Hill Cemetery. Memorials: donor's choice.

Ronald Frank, 60

Ronald J. Frank died Friday in St. James Healthcare.

He was born July 9, 1943, in The Dalles, Ore. He fought a longtime sickness. Ronald served his country in the Navy and was honorably discharged. After that he worked as a mechanic. He was a great man, and a great and wonderful father, and will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Lange; stepfathers, Arno Lange and Walter Sievers; son, Ronald Frank; daughter, Tamara Frank; sister, Charlotte Sievers; and brother, Dale Frank.

Survivors include his sons, Ronald Frank and Matthew Frank; daughters, Teressa Frank and Rebecca Mulari; brothers, Douglas Frank, Ralph Sievers and Donald Frank; sisters, Norma Arbogast and Barbara Knight; 10 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and good friend, Pat McClure.

His remains have been cremated. Memorial services are noon Thursday in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating.

John McMeekin, 58

John Arthur McMeekin of Sioux City, Iowa, died there Monday.

He was born March 15, 1945, in Spokane, to John A. and Donaldean (Bertrand) McMeekin. He grew up in Butte and graduated from Butte High. He received a football scholarship and was an All-American running back at Montana State University. He attended the University of Idaho-Moscow and received his doctorate of education in psychology from the University of South Dakota-Vermillion.

He remained in Vermillion until moving to Sioux City a few years later, where he had his private practice and worked for Western Hills Area Education Agency for more than 25 years. He married Jeanne (Hindt) Lichty, and they raised their children together in Sioux City for many years.

He belonged to the American Psychologists Association, Iowa School Psychologists Association and River City Anglers. He helped with Meals on Wheels and enjoyed hiking, fishing, camping, cooking, blues music and Elvis.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne (Hindt) Lichty, Sioux City; daughters, Eva (Charles) Greeff, Portland, Ore., Abby McMeekin (Tak Man), Honolulu, Hawaii, Chris McMeekin and fiance John Hemmingstad, Elk Point, S.D.; sons, Scott (Susan) Lichty, Sheldon, Iowa, James (Jessica) Lichty, Sioux Falls; sisters, Glendeen Sullivan, Pasco, Wash., Denise (Richard) Liddicoat , Richland, Wash., Gail (Jim) Jory, Butte; stepmother, June McMeekin, Butte; stepsisters, Mona Parke, Cindy Parke; stepbrothers, Steve Parke, Rick Parke; and the love of his life, his grandchildren, Benjamin Lichty, Karl Lichty, Bethany Greeff and Celine Man.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Michael McMeekin.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Sioux City. The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mark Lutheran Church, Sioux City, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating.

George Lots, 81

DILLON — George Vernon Lots of Dillon, beloved parent, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband, died suddenly Monday.

George was born Feb. 22, 1922, the son of Roscoe and Mathilda Lots, in Great Falls. George was raised in Great Falls and still has friends there who mourn his loss. After completing high school, George served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. George received many awards for valor, including the Silver Star for heroism at Guadalcanal. Following the war, George married the love of his life, Mary Ann Peterson of Townsend, Feb. 10, 1948. They lived and worked in Townsend for 23 years, while raising their loving children Jim and Marcia.

George later accepted a position at Western Montana College as the manager of the new physical education complex. Throughout the next 18 years George and Mary Ann opened their home to student athletes. Today these folks still comment on the extraordinary hospitality they enjoyed from the Lots.

George was also a handyman who helped citizens and businesses with remodeling and advice. In sum, he was a remarkable man of many talents and generosity who will be missed by all.

George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann, daughter, Marcia, son, Jim, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service was conducted Thursday at Brundage Chapel.

Alice Duffner, 79

DILLON — Alice Mae Duffner of Dillon died Monday in Tobacco Root Mountain Care Center, Sheridan, after an extended illness.

She was the first child born to Les and Ruby Staudenmeyer and the first child born in the Dillon hospital, on Jan. 2, 1924. She attended Drummy School No. 29 and graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1942 and attended Montana Normal College.

Alice met Ralph when he worked at the Diamond O Ranch. He later entered the Army and Alice followed him to California, where they were married Nov. 10, 1944. (This Monday, they would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.) She worked at the post exchange until she and Ralph returned from the Army to the Diamond O in 1946. They had four children, Judy, Janet, Joyce and Les. Over the years they resided at many different locations including the Rebich place, Pigtail Creek Street, the Metzel place in the Centennial Valley and Waterloo. They purchased ranches in Sheridan and the Centennial Valley and enjoyed ranching until 1994, when the ranch in Sheridan was sold and they retired to Dillon.

Alice had many hobbies and those who knew her have been blessed with her talents. She was an avid photographer, made bookmarks from cards, and never forgot the birthday of a relative or friend. She was a devoted letter writer. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She belonged to many organizations including Cowbells, American Legion Auxiliary, Friendly Neighbors Club, and Duncan District Club. She was a 4-H leader for many years.

Alice is survived by her husband, Ralph of Dillon; daughters, Judy (Gary) Campbell of Forsyth, Janet (Dave) Armstrong of East Helena, Joyce (Dwight) Chell of Billings; son, Les (Debbie) Duffner of Dell; grandchildren, Angela Campbell Prior, Brian and Jason Armstrong, Guy, Kurt, and Lacey Duffner, and AJ Brehan; great-grandchild, Kyler Armstrong; sister, Marjorie MacClean; brother, Bill Staudenmeyer; numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents, sister Jean Walton, and great-granddaughter, Riley Armstrong preceded Alice in death.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Brundage Funeral Home, Dillon, where the funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday.

Memorials: Make-A-Wish Foundation or charity of donor's choice.
