Ethel Christopher
Ethel Mae Christopher, 89, passed away at her home in Kalispell on April 8, 2002.
She was born in Onida, S.D., on Dec. 31, 1912, to Alfred and Ethel Hayes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; one sister; her husband; one daughter, Margene; one granddaughter, Janet; and a son-in-law, Don Carie.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Carie, of Lakeside; son-in-law, Gene Thompson and his wife, Marlene, of Kalispell; six grandchildren, Linda and Dave Smith, of Kalispell, Scott and Debbie Thompson, of Basalt, Colo., Dana and Tom Kuzma, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Douglas and Tana Carie, of Bigfork, Debra and Jeff Williams, of Spokane, Wash., and Ken and Juliana Thompson, of San Diego, Calif.; 13 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild, and one sister, Bertha Cameron.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at C. E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at Johnson Mortuary from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 603 South Main Street, Kalispell MT 59901.
Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Mortuary and Crematory.
Florence Hurd
Florence Vivian Hurd, 91, died April 5, 2002, at the Brendan House in Kalispell.
She was born Sept. 17, 1910, in Jennings, La., to Thomas and Clara (Tuttle) Young.
She married Herman Hurd on Sept. 20, 1930, in Jennings, La. Immediately following her marriage, she moved to Montana with her husband, who was a Great Falls city fireman. She lived in Great Falls from 1930 until 1996, when she moved to Kalispell to live closer to her daughter, Trish Hart and family.
Navigating a strong and resourceful spirit allowed her to touch many lives and capture life. She loved the outdoors and was happy working in her garden. Camping and fishing trips with her husband, family and friends brought many happy memories. Her heart was in the home where she loved to sew, crochet and care for her family, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman; son, Thomas Arthur Hurd; brothers, Floyd Cecil and Lloyd Asher Young, and great-granddaughter, Heather Grace Henderson.
She is survived by daughters, Trish Hart and husband, Ralph "Dutch", Mary and husband, Warren; sister, Clara Ellen and husband, Edward Ardion; granddaughters, Marisa Henderson and husband, Terry, Jana Hart; grandsons, Andrew Hart, Kevin and Kerry Johnson; great grandchildren Kayman and Kirya Henderson.
The family suggests memorial to Epworth Nursery, c/o Epworth United Methodist Church, 329 Second Avenue East, Kalispell MT 59901.
There will be no services. Her cremated remains will be interred at Highland Cemetery by her husband in Great Falls.
Oscar Jacobson
Oscar Allen "Jake" Jacobson, 86, passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the Brendan House in Kalispell.
He was born on April 11, 1915, in Scobey, the oldest of five children of Jacob and Hilda Jacobson.
In 1934, he came to Western Montana to work in Glacier National Park in the Civil Conservation Corps as a firefighter and ambulance driver. Shortly thereafter, he moved his family from Scobey to Kalispell where he has since resided.
He served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received in France. In June 1949, he married Thelma Wallace of Lewistown at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kalispell. They had three children-Carol, Eileen and Calvin. For many years he owned and operated a small local business known as Aluminum Products.
He was a long time avid sportsman and truly loved wintertime skiing and golfing at all the local courses. He was one of the original skiers on Big Mountain who had to endure the long hikes up to enjoy one long run down. In 1962, he survived a life-altering brain surgery that left him partially paralyzed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob; his mother, Hilda, and two sisters, Dolores Fubright and Harriet Henricksen.
He is survived by his brother, Irvin Jacobson; sister, Lorrian Martin; three children, Carol Trieweiler, Eileen McMahon and Calvin Jacobson; nine grandchildren, Tawni and Whitney Hughes, Brittany and Ian McMahon, Kathryn, Christina and Anna Trieweiler, and Chausea an Kearstin Jacobson.
Funeral service to celebrate his life and faith will be held on his 87th birthday, Thursday (today), April 11, at 1:30 p.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at C. E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be at Johnson Mortuary Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Mary Swanson
Mary Lucile Swanson, a beautiful Montana girl, beloved mother and devoted grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2002, at the Immanuel Lutheran Home at the age of 90. Her three daughters were at her side.
She was born on July 6, 1911, in Kalispell to Almina (Minnie) Front and Walter Benjamin Jordan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Olaf Eugene; her parents; one granddaughter, Wendy Christine Sutfin; and her sister, Anne Jordan.
She is survived by three daughters, Margene Berry and Janet Sutfin both of Alexandria, Va., and Linda Jenkins of Fullerton, Calif.; a sister, Wilma Jordan Myers of Lakeside; seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 12, at Christ Church Episcopal with Father William Baumgarten officiating.

Florence Gaffaney
Florence O. Gaffaney, 88, died June 6, 2002, at the Heritage Place in Kalispell.
She was born March 25, 1914, in Cumberland, B. C., Canada, to John V. and Ruth (Johnston) Nordgren.
She moved with her family from Cumberland to Bellingham, Wash., when she was still an infant. She received her early education in Bellingham, graduating from Whatcom High School. She married Larry Gaffaney on July 15, 1933, in Kalispell, and the family lived at Half Moon Lake.
In 1954 she returned to school, spending one year in Havre before transferring to Montana State College in Bozeman, where she completed her teaching degree. She went on to teach at Gallatin Gateway, Cut Bank, Coram and Frenchtown before moving to Spokane, Wash., where she taught for eight years before being medically retired.
After her retirement she became involved with the Eastern Star and Rainbow girls, and was a leader with 4-H. She enjoyed knitting, quilt making, cooking for her grandchildren and spending summers at her cabin up the North Fork.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; one sister; and one great grandson.
She is survived by her husband, Larry, of Kalispell; two daughters, Naomi Hoiland and husband, Duke, of Trail Creek, and Maureen Pitman and husband, Harry, of Coram; one son, Larry Gaffaney and wife, Gayle, of Deer Lodge; eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at a later date.
Cyril Neether
Cyril "Cy" Henry Neether, 55, died June 1, 2002, at Duck Lake.
He was born Dec. 8, 1946, in Stanley, N.D., to Henry Cyril and Vivian (Gustafson) Neether.
He attended Palermo High School in North Dakota, graduating in 1965. He then went to St. Paul, Minn., for mechanics schooling.
He was a decorated Vietnam veteran with the National Defense Service medal; sharpshooter badge M-16 rifles; marksman badge for M-14 rifles; Vietnam Campaign medal with Device, Vietnam Service medal; and an Overseas Bar. He had been working for the past 31 years at Plum Creek, Evergreen Division. He was a member of the Elk's Lodge and a lifetime NRA member.
He loved hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Neether, of Kalispell; son, Scott Neether and wife, Heidi, and grandsons, Tucker and Tre'; stepson, Donald Weakley and his children, Coty and Darby; stepdaughter, Anna McComb and husband, Matt, and children, Jourdan and Sean; sister, Birdie Marum and husband, Roger, and nephews, Scott and Shane.
Funeral service was held June 7, at the Christian Center Assembly of God with Pastor Robert Ross officiating. This service was held jointly with Norman Schwartz.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Whitefish Credit Union, Neether Grandchildren Education Memorial Fund, 234 East Montana, Kalispell MT 59901.
Quentin Rabideau
Quentin Eugene Rabideau, 78, died at his residence at Pelican Pointe in Klamath Falls, Ore., on June 3, 2002.
He was born April 29, 1924, in Great Falls to Edmund J. and Ethel I. (Christianson) Rabideau. During World War II he served in the U. S. Army in Italy with the 85th regiment, 10th Mountain Infantry, Company I. He was awarded the Purple Heart. In November 1957 he married the former Anita Young in Cody, Wyo. He spent his life as a heavy equipment operator in construction. He retired in 1983. He moved to Klamath Falls from the Cottage Grove-Creswell area in 1998 to be near his daughter, Jean. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and, in his younger days, saddle bronc riding.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita in 1992; his parents; and a brother, Norm Rabideau.
He is survived by his daughter, Jean Ellis, of Klamath Falls, Ore.; stepsons, Clark Rabideau and his wife, Lynn, of Canby, Ore., and Dean Rabideau and his wife, Michelle, of Lompoc, Calif.; a brother, Fran Rabideau and his wife, Eva; a sister, Betty Luce, all of Columbia Falls; 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and the staff and his special friends at Pelican Pointe.
Graveside service was held June 6, at the Creswell Cemetery in Creswell, Ore, under the direction of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Home of Cottage Grove, Ore.

Norman Schwartz
Norman Joseph Schwartz, 57, died June 1, 2002, at Duck Lake near Babb.
He was born Jan. 28, 1945, in Wadena, Minn., to Hubert Joseph and Exia (Burkhart) Schwartz.
He was a graduate of Wadena Technical School in Wadena, Minn., and the Lutheran Brethren Bible School in Fergus Falls, Minn. He married Sandy Redfield on Dec. 2, 1967. They had been married 35 years.
He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force as an avionics technician and worked in that position for Wycliffe Bible Translators in Washaw, N. C., and at Rocky Mountain Avionics in Kalispell. He currently owned and operated Rocky Mountain SuperVac.
He was a certified EMT in North Carolina, and a member of the Royal Montana Rangers. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and hiking.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Schwartz.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Kalispell; two sons, David Schwartz, of Monroe, N.C., Matthew Schwartz, of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter Denise Schwartz, of Kalispell; brother Richard Schwartz, and sister, Betty Switala; grandchildren, Brittany, Briana and Bridget Schwartz.
Funeral service was held June 7 at the Christian Center Assembly of God with Pastor Robert Ross officiating. This service was held jointly with Cyril "Cy" Neether.
