Madeleine Maxwell
SPOKANE, Wash. - Madeleine Maxwell, 80, died unexpectedly in Spokane, on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan Wilson of Spokane and Barbara Horton of Missoula; a brother, Bob Dusenbury in Anacortes, Wash.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
No services are planned.
George H. James
LIBBY - George H. James, 84, former Libby postmaster, died Thursday, Jan. 8, of natural causes at St. John Lutheran Hospital in Libby. He was born Jan. 8, 1913, in Chicago, the son of Thomas and Jennie James. The family resided in the greater Chicago area, where he was raised and educated at Lombard.
He married Roberta Russell on April 26, 1935. He was employed by the Chicago Herald-Examiner for a period of time until beginning his employment with the U.S. Postal Service at Glen Ellyn, Ill. They remained in Illinois until coming to Libby in January of 1952, where he continued his employment with the Postal Service, eventually serving as postmaster until his retirement in 1972.
He was active in civic and community affairs in Libby. He served as a delegate to the Montana Constitutional Convention in 1972 and served on the school board of Libby School District 4. He served on the Lincoln County Library Board and the Great Books Foundation as well as being honored as State Library Board Member of the Year. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a longtime member and past-president of the Libby Lions Club and served on the Foster Home board. In years past, he served as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America Program and as past-president of the Libby Parent-Teacher Association. In recent years, he enjoyed traveling and also assisted in teaching a gourmet cooking adult education class.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Roberta of Libby; two sons, Larry James and his wife Cheryl of Lake Forest, Calif., and Chuck James of Libby; sister Adlyn Stedman of Tucson, Ariz.; a grandchild Kyle, and a great-grandchild Connor, both of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wally Smith officiating; interment services will follow in the City of Libby Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Lincoln County Library.
Michael S. Bell
LYNWOOD, WASH. - Michael S. Bell, 46, of Lynwood died Dec. 14,1997, of complications from pneumonia.
He was born Feb. 20, 1951, in Helena to Larry and Phyllis Bell. In 1969, he graduated from Sentinel High School and attended the University of Montana. Mike was the assistant manager of F.W. Woolworth in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1976 to 1978. At his father's request, he became proprietor of The Bell Pipe Shoppe in Missoula. He sold the business in 1990, when he moved to Seattle. He worked for Blue Cross until health conditions forced his retirement.
In 1983 he married RaeLynn Froelich. They later divorced.
Mike was a member of Sentinel Lodge 155 A.F. & A.M. and Scottish Rite. Mike was an avid reader and also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1992 and by an uncle and his grandparents.
He is survived by his mother Phyllis; brother Terry of Seattle; sisters Sharon Pulliam of Seattle and Patricia Nau of Missoula; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial and Masonic rite services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the First Christian Church, 2701 S. Russell St., with Pastor Dan Dixson officiating. Private interment will follow services.

Laura Mae Neuhausen
KALISPELL - Laura Mae "Mickey" Neuhausen, 87, died Friday, Jan. 9, at the Brendan House in Kalispell.
Laura Mae Neuhausen was born in Rochester, Pa., on Sept. 18, 1911, to Elizabeth and Edward Holman, the youngest of three children. She graduated from Duff Business College in 1928.
Mickey married Martin Neuhausen on Sept. 25, 1933. They moved west, settling in Montana in 1956. She fell in love with its grandeur and loved camping, fishing and traveling. She never met a person who didn't become a friend. She passed her time baking for family and friends. Mickey worked for many years as secretary for Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In recent years she worked as a secretary for RSVP.
She was preceded in death by her beloved Martin, her brother Edward and and sister Aggie.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Dee Macy of Barrow, Alaska; son and daughter-in-law Marty and Danette Neuhausen of Washington; and son and daughter-in-law Chris and Ginny Neuhausen of Kalispell; sisters-in-law Olga Baylor of Kalispell, and Alma and Jack Laney of California; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was greatly loved and will be missed by many.
Cremation has taken place. The family suggests memorials to the Shriners Hospital of Portland, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Ore. 97201.
Arrangements are by Johnson Mortuary.
Eugene K. Howlett
MISSOULA - Eugene K. Howlett, 73, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula of natural causes.
Eugene was born Dec. 24, 1924, to Irene and Stephen R. Howlett and was raised in Pablo and was a lifelong resident of the Flathead Indian Reservation. He was a member of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
Eugene worked over 40 years on the Flathead Reservation, his places of employment included: the CCC, Hot Springs Lumber Co. and CS&KT Camas Bathhouse until its closing, and Tempero Post & Pole until retirement.
Eugene met and married Clara M. Bourdon of St. Ignatius in 1942 in Missoula.
They made their lifelong home in Hot Springs, where they raised their four children.
Eugene was well known for his gardening and sense of humor. He was well liked by all who came to know him. They always referred to him as "Grandpa" or "Geno."
He is survived by his wife Clara of the family home; Kenneth E. Howlett of Polson; Glenn C. Howlett and wife Sue of Polson; Diana M. Howlett of Polson; Gloria J. Howlett Riech and husband Jack of Hot Springs; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; and his favorite four-legged buddies, Kubah and Eshi.
Traditional wake services will be 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in the Salish Longhouse in St. Ignatius; rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Monday evening. Wake closing service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the Longhouse, with Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission with Father. Gus Schmidt S.J. as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
For those who would like to send a memorial, a memorial fund is being established to help his grandson, Todd, defray the expenses of going to the Olympics.
Arrangements are by the Mission Valley Funeral Chapel of St. Ignatius.
John W. Janssen
EUREKA - John W. Janssen (Carl Johnson) of Eureka died Thursday, Jan. 8.
Survivors include his mother Laurene McRae of Eureka; two sisters, Teresa Cope and Laurie Hull, both of Eureka; brother Gary McRae of Big Sky; two aunts, Irene Olt of Eureka and Shirley Barrett of Lakeside; uncle Gordan Mikalson of Trout Creek; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at the Baptist Church in Eureka. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Tobacco Valley Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Eureka.
Amy Elizabeth Cline
POLSON - Amy Elizabeth Cline, 91, of Polson, passed away Jan. 12, 1998, at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1969.
Survivors include her daughter Joann Reksten of Kalispell; granddaughters Linda Reksten of North Hollywood, Calif., and Susan Reksten of Bellevue, Wash.; and sister Lila Johnson and brother Arle "Swede" Johnson of Polson.
Visitation will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Grogan Funeral Home.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Rowold officiating.
Edna Irene Hyer
POLSON - Edna Irene Hyer, 92, passed away at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes on Jan. 12, 1998.
She was born April 27, 1905, to James Hatch and Edna McClintock.
Preceding her in death were her husband Harold, one brother and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter Marion Nelson of Great Falls; five sons, Rod of Coffeyville, Kan., Ron, Russ and Randy of Great Falls and Rick of Phoenix; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rudy Ringhoff officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Polson.
Gwyneth Nelson
LIBBY - Gwyneth Nelson, 69, of Libby, died Sunday, Jan. 11, at St. John Lutheran Hospital of heart failure.
Survivors include daughters Debbie Loomis and Julie Nelson, both of Libby; sons Rob Nelson of Libby, Rick Nelson of Las Vegas and Randy Nelson of Amarillo, Texas; sister Shirley Nelson of Libby; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband Buck in 1977 and sister Gloria Peck in 1971.
Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church with interment following at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Twyla P. Plaas
LIBBY - Twyla P. Plaas, 83, longtime Libby resident, died Friday, Jan. 9, at the Libby Care Center.
She was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Bird City, Kan., the daughter of Orla and Hazel Lovelace. She graduated from high school in Goodland, Kan., and later from nurse's training at St. Anthony's Hospital in 1934.
She practiced nursing in Colorado, Kansas, Washington, Alaska and Montana. She was employed at St. John Lutheran Hospital in Libby for over 30 years until her retirement in 1985.
She is survived by three sons, Michael of Centralia, Wash., Allen of Wasilla, Alaska, and Richard "Rick" of Libby; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mary Eleanor Linse
NEW YORK - Mary Eleanor Linse was born in Lewistown on Nov. 12, 1927, and died in New York on Dec. 24, 1997.
Eleanor was a social worker in the New York City school system. She was a loving advocate for the underprivileged and a fierce adversary to the bureaucratic establishment on their behalf.
She loved people from all walks of life. She never forgot old friends and was always eager to make new ones.
She was a devoted daughter and loved her father Fred, who passed away in 1979.
She credited her mother Grace for instilling in her a love for music, art and reading. She couldn't bear the grief of losing her dear mother in September.
Her memory will be cherished by her family in Ronan, Richard and Beverly Linse, Greg and Juanita Linse, and Tom, Mona, Tyler and Taylor Linse; and her extended family in New York, Lisa and Jessica Schwartz.
Memorial services for Grace and Eleanor Linse will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Ronan United Methodist Church.
