Annie E. Dupuis

RONAN - Annie E. Dupuis, 83, of Ronan - formerly of Polson and Pablo - died of natural causes Oct. 4, 1999, at Westside Care Center here.

She was born Nov. 4, 1915, in Hayesville, N.C., to Bayes and Ollie McTaggart. She grew up and attended schools in North Carolina. She married Everett Franks in March 1933 in Young Harris, Ga. They moved to Polson, and she had lived in this area ever since. They had four children together and later divorced in 1942.

In 1948, she married Gus Dupuis in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They resided in Polson until Gus died in 1972. She then moved to Pablo.

Also preceding her in death were great-grandson Jeffery, brother B.L. McTaggart and stepdaughter Enid DuPuis.

Annie is survived by her four children: Alma Franks Rathbun of Seeley Lake, Donna Franks Smith of Pablo, George Allen Franks of Pablo and Vera Franks Utzke of Lincoln, Neb.; stepson Edward DuPuis of Spokane; stepdaughter Dorothy Getz and husband Wallace of Kalispell; brothers Ernest, J.D. Dennis and Kenneth McTaggart; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Lake View Cemetery in Polson, with Rev. Kenneth Prewitt officiating.

Arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.

Helen F. Smith

POLSON - Helen Francis Smith, 69, of Polson died of natural causes Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at St. Joseph Hospital here.

She was born Oct. 1, 1930, to Henry and Eunice Price. She was raised and educated in Russellville, Ark. She married James W. Smith. He precedes her in death.

Helern lived in California for 25 years and eventually moved back to Russellville. She worked at Arkansas Tech University. She moved to Polson in July 1998.

Helen loved cooking, handwork, gardening and remodeling houses.

She was preceded in death by her husband James and son Steven K. "Smitty" Smith.

She is survived by son Michael Smith of Washington; daughter Sandra Skyberg of Arkansas; four grandchildren: Cody Skyberg of Arkansas, Heather Black of Arkansas, Tim Smith of Tennessee and Randy Smith of Washington; great-grandchild Kyle Skyberg of Arkansas; brother Howard Price of Russellville, and half-sisters Katherine Simpson and Ona Lee Price, both of Russellville.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Cremation and arrangements were by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.

Irene G. Holt

PABLO - Irene G. Holt, 79, of Pablo died of natural causes Sept. 27, 1999, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.

She grew up and attended schools in Polson, graduating from Polson High School in 1937. She attended the University of Montana.

Irene married M. Wallace Holt on Oct. 10, 1941. They ranched in Valley View for more than 30 years together. After they retired, they moved to Mud Creek near Pablo in the late 1970s.

She was a past member of the Valley View Women's Club and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed ceramics work, sewing and leatherwork, and was an avid pinochle player.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, M. Wallace Holt, and by her parents.

She is survived by two daughters, Merle and Alvin McKay of Polson and Walene and Gary Maas of Pablo; son Ray and Anne Holt of Libby; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a brother, Curtis Stimson of Grandview, Wash.

Memorial services wee held Oct. 2 at Lake View Cemetery in Polson, with Rev. Richard Widerholdt officiating. Cremation and arrangements were under the direction and care of Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

John Kaercher

BIG STONE CITY, S.D. - Former Polson businessman and longtime resident John Kaercher died Oct. 3, 1999, at his home in Big Stone City, S.D.

Funeral services are pending, awaiting arrival of family members.

Victoria Ann McCarthy

POLSON - Victoria (Vicky) Ann Gauthier McCarthy, 52, died Sept. 28, 1999, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Vicky was born Sept. 1, 1947, in Missoula, to Louie and Mary Gauthier. She was raised in Arlee and attended schools in Arlee, Polson and Missoula, graduating from Missoula County High School in 1965. While growing up, she was active in 4-H and received many awards. Following graduation, Vicky traveled to Washington, D.C., where she spent two years assigned to Vice President Hubert Humphrey's Secret Service detail.

After returning to Missoula in 1967, Vicky worked for the Missoula County superintendent of schools.

In September 1969, Vicky married her life partner, Bob McCarthy. They lived an adventure-filled 30 years, residing in Missoula and in Fairbanks, Alaska, and finally moving to Polson in 1984.

In Polson, Vicky went to work for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. She worked in various jobs, including managing the Salish Kootenai College bookstore, as a court advocate, as executive secretary of Mission Valley Power and at the time of her death, working for the Safety of Dams program.

Vicky was a member of the Tribes, Immaculate Conception Parish and the Mission Valley YMCA. She was a past president of the Polson Athletic Booster Club and a religious education director.

To say that Vicky was a loving and caring wife, mother and friend would be to understate her boundless heart. She was famous for her hospitality, warmth, kindness, generosity and her ever-present smile. She was also a famous cook, preparing hundreds of birthday cakes, dinners and parties for family, friends and co-workers. To play cards, to laugh and talk, and to play with children were her favorite things. She was a genius at creating joy in others and had a tremendous capacity for love.

Preceded in death by her mother and father, Vicky is survived by her husband Bob at the family home; daughter Kristy McCarthy of Polson; son and daughter-in-law Dan and Judy McCarthy of Anchorage, Alaska; sister Bonnie Rice of Polson; brothers Larry and Jolene Gauthier and Gary and Geri Gauthier of Polson, and Bob and Myrna Gauthier of Ronan, plus more than 60 nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Resurrection was held Oct. 1 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Polson. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Mission Valley YMCA, Box 147, Ronan, 59864.

Mary Ashley
POLSON - Mary Helen Ashley, age 65, of Polson died August 8, 2000 at the Evergreen Care Center in Polson of natural causes. Mary was born October 17, 1934 in Richey, Mt. to Anton and Adella (McKinnon) Molzhon. She attended schools in Eastern Montana, near Vida and in Pablo. She attended Ronan High School. She married Fred Ashley on August 1, 1960 and he preceded her in death in March of 1984. She had lived in Pablo and was a longtime resident of the Evergreen Rehabilitation Center in Polson. She enjoyed crochette, knitting and weaving. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, son Emil Ashley and two grandchildren. She is survived by a son Fred Ashley of Pablo, and three daughters: Letha Morgan of Pablo, Gail Ashley of Ronan and Linda Capdeboscq of Cheney, Wash., her brothers George of Ronan, Mike of Ronan, Alan of Kalispell and Lawrence of Thompson Falls; sisters Anella Marten of Geraldine, JoAnne Cleary of Florence and Pattie Moline of Lewistown; eight grandchildren, Nicholas and Shay Ashley, Brandon, Tyler and Johnny McKeever, Beckey Ashley, Clinton and A.J. Morgan. Rosary service was August 11 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at the church. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery. Shrider's Mortuary of Ronan assisted the family with arrangements. Lois Burbank CHARLO - Lois Maxine Burbank, age 84, of Charlo died in her sleep at her home July 25,2000. She was born November 21, 1915 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada. She attended schools in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, Deering, North Dakota and graduated from Charlo High School. She obtained U.S. citizenship in October 1941. Lois was active in P.T.A., was instrumental in getting the school polio immunization program started, a member of the Methodist Women's Church Society, Church Choir, Charlo Women's Club, recording secretary for the Lake County Federated Women's Club, was a charter member of the Mission View Garden Club, wrote the Charlo news column for both the Ronan Pioneer for 17 years and the Missoulian, worked at the Consolidated Dairies in Charlo and the Allentown Cafe. Lois enjoyed gardening, crocheting, music and writing. Survivors include her daughters, Carol Grant of San Diego, Calif., Beth Liedl of Florence, AZ, Geriann Wilson of Chehalis, Wash., nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, a brother, Bill MacDonald and a nephew and niece, Blake Rutherford and Vivian Sklapsky, of B.C., Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband Don, their son Donald Lester, her mother Viola MacDonald, sister Velma Rutherford and her father J. C. Bollman. Graveside Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Ronan with Pastor Roger Andruss officiating. Shrider's Mortuary of Ronan is assisting the family with arrangements.

JoAnn Rosemary McDonald
RONAN - JoAnn Rosemary McDonald, 54, of Ronan, died Aug. 9, 2000, suddenly of natural causes at St. Luke Community Hospital. JoAnn was born March 19, 1946, at St. Ignatius to Nona Mae Burland and Leroy Joseph McDonald. She attended schools in White Sulpher Springs, Polson and most recently graduated from the Salish Kootenai College with a nursing degree and an associate's degree in liberal arts. She lived in Ronan but traveled extensively with her profession in the nursing field. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and one brother. JoAnn is survived by three daughters Linda Serrano of Lathrop, Calif., April Martinez of Stockton, Calif., and Heather Kuntz of Lathrop, Calif.; two sisters, Kathleen Allen of Lathrop, Calif., and Karen Nelson of Yakima, Wash.; eight grandchildren Abel, Cristoval, Armondo, Cristina, Amanda, Joseph and Alicia; and great friend Rhonda Emerson, along with many other friends. Rosary services will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Shrider's Mortuary Chapel at Ronan. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at the St. Ignatius Mission. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery at Ronan. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Society or the American Cancer Society.

William L. 'Bill' Norton
ST. IGNATIUS - William L. "Bill" Norton, 54, died Aug. 10, 2000, at his home in St. Ignatius. Bill was born Jan. 7, 1946, in Ephrata, Wash., to Charles and Phyllis (Archibald) Norton. Raised in Washington and Idaho, Bill joined the Army at a young age and served in Germany. When Bill returned home, he worked at various jobs including sawmills in the St. Maries, Idaho, area and as an over-the-road truck driver before moving to the Mission Valley in the 1980s. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors when he wasn't being a mechanic for his family and friends. Bill married Rebecca Ann Postorino on Feb. 4, 1995, and they made their home at St. Ignatius. He was preceded in death by his father and brother Richard. Survivors include his wife Rebecca of St. Ignatius; mother Phyllis of St. Ignatius; brothers and their wives, Chuck and Loretta of Ronan, Leonard and Betty of Tekoa, Wash., and Roy of Washington; sisters and their spouses, Luella and Gordon Martin of Yuma, Ariz., Nancy and Howard Gothman of Spokane, Wash., Ethel "Tillie" and Jerry Norton of St. Maries, Idaho, and Peg and Frank Smith of Quincy, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with the Father Gus Schmidt, S.J., as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at the St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery with military honors being presented by American Legion McCarthy Post #107. Memorials may be made to the Lake County Hospice, c/o Linda Edwards, 711 Main S.W., Ronan, MT 59864. Foster and Durgeloh Funeral Home of St. Ignatius is assisting the family with arrangements.
