Phyllis L. Burke
POLSON - Phyllis L. Burke, 70, of Polson died at her home June 14, 2000, after a long illness.
She was born in Forsyth on Jan. 19, 1930, to Gertrude and Zeno Johnston. She was raised in eastern Montana and attended Kinman Business College in Spokane.
She married George Sample in 1949 and had three sons, Albert, Ronald and Daniel, and a daughter, Debra.
She worked as a clerk for the Frenchtown School District in 1964, and then as business manager, retiring in 1990. She married Clifford Burke in May 1991 and they made their retirement home in Polson. Phyllis loved spending time with her family and children. She loved to travel. Cliff and Phyllis were able to take several trips abroad after retiring.
She is survived by her husband Clifford Burke of Polson; sons Albert and Ron Sample of Frenchtown, and Daniel Sample of Bozeman; daughter Debra Huss of San Jose, Calif.; granddaughters Jessica Sample of Portland and Toni Marie Matheson of San Jose; grandson Craig Sample of Portland; her mother, Gertrude Johnston of Gore, Okla.; sisters Merle Bell of Gore, Dollie Eubanks of Vian, Okla., Barbara Garcia of Ventura, Calif., and Myron Johnston of Yreka, Calif., and many cousins, including Eunice Slane of Twin Falls, Idaho.
Services were held June 17 at Grogan Funeral Home in Polson, with the Rev. Edwina Aker officiating. Cremation followed the service.
Marcelle Lindberg
ARLEE - Marcelle B. Lindberg, 81, died Sept. 10, 2000, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. She was born May 5, 1919, in Twin Falls, Id. to Frank and Mary (Brown) Bennett. Marcelle was raised in the Twin Falls area, but traveled quite frequently with her father, a salesman, who covered a large portion of the United States. She married Jack Russell and they had four children. As with many things in life, things do not always work out and they later divorced. Marcelle married again, in 1962, to Bob Lindberg. They made their home in Compton, Calif. and then in Big Bear, California. Bob preceded her in death in 1983. In 1995, Marcelle moved to Arlee to help an ailing daughter and decided to stay. Throughout her life, she has been a devoted homemaker, wife and mother. She was an excellent seamstress by profession and she kept busy doing everything - whether it was her garden or just tending her animals. She was usually so busy, she would often say "she was trying to keep house in order." She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and had seled to her daughters and husband in the Los Angeles Temple. She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. Survivors are: her children Ginnie (Dave) Kulm of Corona, Calif.; Diana (Gary) Lucy and Jona (Rick) Brown, all of Arlee; and David Russell of Corona, Calif.; her sister, Mary Lou of Northern California and 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Later day Saints in St. Ignatius, followed by service at 2 p.m. Bishop Alan Mikkelsen will preside. Foster and Durgeloh Funeral Home of St. Ignatius is assisting the family with arrangements.
Verlin "Jack" Snowberg
BIG ARM - Verlin "Jack" Andrew Snowberg, Sr., 80, of Big Arm died at his home surrounded by family and friends Sept. 7, 2000. He was born May 8, 1920 in Clark County, Wisc., to Andrew and Clara Snowberg. He grew up and attended schools in Wisconsin and graduated from Hammond High School in Hammond, Ind. in 1938. Jack started working construction with his father and brothers. He also worked in Alaska for a year prior to joining the U.S. Army during WW II. He served in the European Theater during WW II. After his discharge from the military, he moved back to Bensenville, Ill. and started a construction company with his father and two brothers. He was a general contractor for 17 years. He remained involved in real estate until 1971 when he moved to Big Arm. Jack started a marina and a trailer court in Big Arm known as "Snowberg's Port & Court," which Jack owned until the time of his death. Jack was a member of the Shrine and Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by one brother, Allen; one sister, Leslie, and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Irene of Big Arm; a son, Butch Snowberg of Arizona; a daughter, Susan Snowberg-Hunt of Kalispell; a step-daughter, Mary Manning of Salt Lake City; four stepsons, Charles Sandoval, Robert Sandoval, Ernie Sandoval, all of Arizona, and Dave Sloan of Illinois; a sister, Elnora Rowland of Apache Junction, Ariz., a brother, Claude Snowberg of Lansing, Kans.; his dearest friends, Harley and Ramona Burnett of Polson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many wonderful people who touched his life throughout the years. A memorial service was held Sept. 11 at the Grogan Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Cox officiating. An open house followed at Snowberg's Port & Court. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, Spokane. Cremation and arrangements were by Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory, Polson.
Thelma Solander
MISSOULA - Former Polson resident Thelma R. Solander, 79, of Missoula died Sept. 9, 2000, at Hillside Manor Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 7, 1921, to Leonard and Florence Barger on the old Banyon Ranch in East Missoula. She was raised in East Missoula and graduated from Missoula County High School. She served as a secretary in the armed forces in Chicago for a time before returning to Missoula where she operated two businesses, the Cabin Bar and the Reno Inn. Later in life she retired with her husband Vic to Lincoln. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and throughout her life was known for her involvement in community organizations. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Jack McCausland and Victor Solander, three brothers, Arthur Buls, Fred Buls and Dean Barger. She is survived by several niece and nephews. Graveside services were held Wednesday at Missoula Cemetery. Malletta Family of Funeral Homes handled arrangements.
Tyrel "Tiger" Raisland
ST. IGNATIUS - Tyrel Quentin "Tiger" Raisland, 7, was called to heavenly home on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, when he died from injuries received in an accident. Tyrel was born in Bismarck, N.D., on April 4, 1993, to Glen and Karen (Cawlfield) Raisland and came to the family home in Culbertson before the family was transferred to Missoula. Shortly after moving to Missoula, the family moved to a farm north of St. Ignatius, near Post Creek, where Tyrel could help with the animals. He went to Mission Elementary School where he was a second grader in Mrs. Whalen's class. Tyrel was a special, sweet child who loved everyone and was loved by everyone who knew him. He was always helping his mom and dad on the farm with the animals. He enjoyed playing store, t-ball and soccer, playing with his friends, riding his pony and working the garden. He is survived by his parents, Glen and Karen Raisland; his grandparents, George and Janet Cawlfield of Helena, and aunts and uncles, Larry and Cindy Cawlfield and their daughter Madison of Helena, Lori Harris and Brad Hampton and daughter Kyla Harris of Helena, Carol and Elmer Schott and Belgrade and their three children, Nancy and Duane Hanson and their two children of Virginia, Una and Walt Earl and their four children of Judith Gap, Olen and Bobbi Raisland and their three children of Reed Point, and Diane and Keith Myers and their three children of Havre; numerous great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Wednesday in the St. Ignatius Christian Church with Pastor Andy Larsson officiating. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial be made to the St. Ignatius Elementary School Project Fund, c/o Lake County Bank, Box 664, St. Ignatius 59865.
Carrol McMahel
RONAN - Carrol Edwards McMahel, 60, died Sept. 28, 2000, at St. Luke Extended Care in Ronan after a long illness which caused her heart to fail. She was born Jan. 31, 1940 in Indianapolis, Ind. to Katherine Walton Edwards of Shelbyville and John Edwards of Edinburgh, Ind. She attended school #16, #52 and Washington High in Indianapolis. She played basketball for Christmore House in 1954-55 and worked for RCA in Indianapolis; P.R. Mallory's in Greencastle and for the American council for the Blind in Indianapolis. Carrol had many hobbies, repairing and dressing dolls, fishing, working puzzles and yard sales, to mention just a few. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Florence Loraine; brothers George W. Edwards, Sr., Harry L. Edwards,Sr., Paul Eugene Edwards, a niece and four nephews. Survivors include her sons Sgt. Todd McMahel, U.S. Army, Colorado Springs; Donald Wilson of Winterville, Geog.; daughters Donna (David) Hamilton of Warner Robins, Geog., Tina (Terry) Wolford of winterville, Geog. and Katherine Gerardy of Athens, Geog.; 11 grandchildren, Jason, Johnathon, Bryndon, Michelle, J. W., Josh, Gina, Steven, Donald, Valerie and Rebecca. She is also survived by her brothers Charles ( Margaret) Edwards, Rev. Homer (Catherine) Edwards, Robert (Diane) Edwards, Sr.; sisters Helen (Max) Reese and Delores Edwards, all of Indianapolis; sisters Shirley (Tom) Cook, Sr., of Harrision, Ark., Juanita (Jack) Drowatzky of Ronan and Norma Edwards of Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in the Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home, State Road 135 Chapel, Greenwood, Ind. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Oct. 3, in the funeral home and internment is in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Foster & Durgeloh Funeral Home of St. Ignatius is in charge of local arrangements.
Margaret Cote
MISSOULA - Margaret Cote died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Village Health Care Center in Missoula. Margaret was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Estavan, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Mikel Gress and Bertha Weasler Gress. She was the fourth of 13 children. The family moved to Montana and farmed near Hysham, Fromberg and Hardin before settling in the St. Ignatius area. On Dec. 8, 1931, Margaret married John Cote of Frenchtown, who was working as a ranch foreman for the sisters in St. Ignatius. Margaret was naturalized as an American citizen in 1941 in Lake County. John and Margaret lived in St. Ignatius and St. Maries, Idaho, before moving to Missoula, where John worked primarily as a carpenter. John died in 1964. Margaret began working as a housekeeper for St. Patrick Hospital in the 1950s and retired in 1980 with over 25 years of service. In celebration of her retirement, Margaret and her sister Annie drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska by themselves. Following retirement, she became active in the Missoula Senior Citizens Center, spending many hours manning the "Rummage Room," serving on the board and putting out the newsletter. She particularly enjoyed taking trips with the Senior Citizens groups. Margaret was also active in the RSVP program and was named Volunteer of the Year. Poor health forced her to restrict her time at the center in the last few years. Margaret is survived by her son William Cote and wife Jennifer, grandson John Cory Cote and wife Laura, granddaughter Cindy Arnott and husband Brian, great-grandson John Michael Cote, great-granddaughters Brianna and Natalie Arnott, and brother Mike Gress, all of Missoula, and sister Maria Gress of St. Ignatius. Margaret will be cremated in accordance with her wishes. A memorial service is planned for Monday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor's choice.
Orville "Bill" Shepard
RONAN - Orville W. "Bill" Shepard, 78, died Oct. 1, 2000 at St. Luke Extended Care Facility in Ronan after an extended illness. Bill was born April 20, 1922, in Neenah, Wis., the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Shepard. After receiving an honorable discharge after serving in World War II, he married Myrtle Sagen Oct. 20, 1945. He was preceded in death by Myrtle Oct. 6, 1999, and a daughter, Cheryl Garcia, May 31, 2000. Bill is survived by his son Bill of Edmonds, Wash. and his daughter Sharon (Mike) Burns of Sheboygan Falls, Wis. He also leaves behinds sons-in-law Lyle Garcia of Pablo and Fred Courville Sr. of Polson, also Gloria Rost, his sister Della (Bud) Groom and brother Bud )Peggy) Perkins of Ballston Spa, N.Y., six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. today at Shrider's Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Dewey Obenchain officiating. Military graveside honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Travis Courville, Fred Courville Jr., Cory Rost, Larry Marchant, Rodney Smart, and Randy Lamphere. Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony Garcia, Erik Kraft, Jeff, Dennis and Richard Lutton and Larry Halvorson. Shrider's Mortuary of Ronan is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jeffrey Allen Miller
ST. IGNATIUS - Jeffrey Allen Miller, infant son of Matthew and Sue Miller, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000. He leaves behind his parents and two brothers, Adrien Micheal and Brandon Eric. Also surviving are his paternal grandparents Mervin and Fern Miller of Belle Center, Ohio, and his maternal grandparents Jonas and Marianne Miller of Millersburg, Ohio. Jeffrey was preceded in death by a brother, Kevin Matthew Miller, and an uncle, Kevin James Miller. Funeral services will be held at the Miller family home near St. Ignatius on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. Foster & Durgeloh Funeral Home of St. Ignatius is assisting the family with arrangements.
Agnes E. Tougas
RONAN - Agnes E. Tougas, 84, of Ronan went to be with her Lord on Sept. 26, 1999, which was the birthday of her late husband, Noel W. Tougas, who died Jan. 26, 1987, after 54 years of marriage.
Agnes was born Feb. 4, 1915, at Sleepy Eye, Minn., the daughter of James and Myrtle Fairfield. The family later moved to Jamestown, N.D., and then to Oriska, N.D., where she met and married Noel Tougas on Oct. 18, 1933.
In 1947, they moved to a farm at Pablo and later to the Round Butte area. In 1979, they retired to a home in Ronan.
Agnes was active in the Ronan Senior Citizens, TOPS, the Round Butte Women's Club and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Also preceding her in death were an infant son, Bernard, in 1940; two grandchildren, Richard Tougas in 1981 and Linda Houle in 1968; her parents; four brothers, and a sister.
Survivors include three sons: Richard and Lorna Tougas of Pablo, Ken and Rosa Tougas of Round Butte and Patrick and Jane Tougas of Ronan; two daughters, Phyllis Houle and Marilyn Jensen, both of Pablo; a brother, Pete Fairfield of Alaska; three sisters: Eunice Calhoun of Menomonie, Wis., Neva McClaflin of Tower City, N.D., and Wilma Anderson of Fargo, N.D.; two sisters-in-law and best friends, Lillian Tiedje of Missoula and Dorothy Eskeli of Albany, Ore.; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ronan. Interment will be at the Ronan cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Ronan Senior Center. Funeral arrangements are under direction of Shrider's Mortuary, Ronan.
Robert "Bob" Myers
RONAN - Robert (Bob) Myers, 55, died Sept. 14, 1999.
He was born June 16, 1944, in Grand Island, Neb.
Survivors include a brother, John, of Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Marlene Scott of Pittsburgh, Pa., and JoAnn Ringiring of Iowa, and his adopted family: Ron, Mona and Ronnie Hansen of Ronan.
Cremation and services have taken place.
Gene L. Glover
KALISPELL - Former Lake County resident Gene Lindy Glover, 73, of Kalispell died Sept. 23, 1999, at Immanuel Lutheran Home here.
He was born July 20, 1926, in St. Ignatius, to Dutch and Alice Glover.
Gene was the youngest of five sons. He left high school to enlist in the Marines during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater. He survived the battle of Iwo Jima and was part of the occupation forces in Japan. Gene served as a Marine trainer during the Korean War and completed his military service in the National Guard. Gene retired as a Master Sergeant.
After Gene returned from the war, he completed his high school education before enrolling at Northern Montana College. It was there he met Lucille Annette Danielson whom he married on June 20, 1952, in Havre. The couple soon moved to the Flathead Valley where they have raised a family of six children.
Gene worked as manager of shipping and receiving for a large retail store in Chicago. He was an award- winning photo engraver for a local newspaper and worked as a construction laborer. Gene was proud to have worked on over 30 major construction sites, including the Flathead High School, the Kalispell Junior High, the Outlaw Inn and the Veterans' Home in Columbia Falls. He was a Junior Engineer on the Hungry Horse Dam construction and worked on the Going-to-the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park.
After retirement, Gene opened a small store he named "the Inconvenience Store: A One-Link Chain Store." It was the "Inconvenience" store because it was hard to get there from the highway, which reveals Gene's wry sense of humor. He maintained an interest in politics and community affairs and frequently expressed his opinions in writing letters to the editor of local papers. Gene also enjoyed operating a golf driving range, telling stories and bragging about his children who have been very successful.
Gene was a long time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He was also a member of the Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry William and Alice Cecelia Glover.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lucy Glover at the family home in Somers; two sons, Tom Glover and wife Laurie, of Great Falls and John Glover and wife Cheryl of Spearfish, S.D.; four daughters, Dee Ann Buehler and husband Craig of Lewistown; Susan Matthews and husband Soapy of Hamilton; Charlene Glover and Geri Glover, both of Santa Fe, NM; also six grandchildren and nieces, Geneva, Wanita, Diana, Jeanette, Pam and Doozie and nephew Raymond.
Visitation and a rosary were held Saturday, Sept. 25, and a Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 27 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Father Kevin O'Neill, celebrant. Committal services were at St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery with full military honors provided by the National Guard.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Somers Volunteer Fire Department.
Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Mortuary & Crematory of Kalispell.
