Robert Cripe
Robert L. Cripe, 92, died on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his home in Troy.
He was born on July 8, 1910, at Williston, N.D., to Alvin and Lydia Ulrey Cripe.
The family moved to Troy in 1911.
Raised and educated at Troy, Robert entered the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and worked with the program for three years.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1939-1941, was reactivated and went to Alaska where he worked on the Alcan Highway, and later served under General Patton with the 3434 Ordnance, until his honorable discharge in January 1946.
He returned to Troy to work for his brother-in-law as a mechanic.
He married Elizabeth Slee in 1947 at Troy.
After moving to Spokane, Robert attended Kinman Business College and worked as an accountant for Greyhound Buses in Spokane and San Francisco.
After retiring from Greyhound, Robert went to barber school and worked as a barber for 10 years, returning to Troy in 1976.
He enjoyed working as a mechanic, music, woodworking and sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elizabeth, three brothers and five sisters.
He is survived by nieces Florence Larson, Jean Meyers, Kathy Cripe, Amanda Young and Carol Young, all of Troy; Margaret Decker, Libby; Marg Higgins, Spokane, Susie Walton, Missoula, Jean South, Noxon and Barbie Larson and nephews Lester Coffman, Ray Lindsey, Larry Cripe, Darryle and his wife Cindy Cripe, Justin Young and Kevin Young and Dan Larson, Troy, and Joe Collogan, Libby, Eddie Cripe, Hermiston, Ore., and Herb Coffman, Oakland, Calif.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec . 6, at the United Methodist Church in Troy.
Local arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Pete Hughes
Robert Peter (Pete) Hughes, Jr., 71, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at his home in Libby of asbestosis.
He was born on April 19, 1931, in Bartow, Fla., to Robert and Fannie Lou Stephens Hughes.
Pete grew up and attended schools in Bartow, and graduated from Summerlin Institute in June 1949.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for four years and receiving an honorable discharge in 1953.
Pete then attended the University of Florida at Gainesville where he studied electronics.
Pete married Patricia Martin on Sept. 23, 1961, at his mother’s home in Bartow.
He started working for W.R. Grace in Florida, transferring to Libby in 1974. He retired from W.R. Grace at the age of 55, and worked for Flathead Community College as a boiler maintenance worker from 1987-1992 before retiring.
He and his wife Pat traveled and camped. Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying his ultralight and camping.
Survivors include his wife Patricia Hughes, Libby; daughter Evelyn Darvill and her husband Ray, Libby; grandsons Jonathon and Patrick Darville, both of Libby; brother Charles Hughes and his wife Beth, Bartow, Fla.; and an uncle, Fred Hughes, Baton Rouge, La.
Private family services will be held. Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Libby.
Patricia Jacobs
Patricia Ann Jacobs, 62, of Libby, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
She was born on Nov. 19, 1940, at Naturita, Colo., to James and Elma Mercer Arvard.
Patricia grew up in Colorado, attending school in Collbran, Uravan and Nucla and graduating from Nucla High School.
She enjoyed sewing, fishing, camping, genealogy and western music. She especially loved her family.
Survivors include sons Bob Snow and his wife Deanna and Rick Labrum, all of Fruita, Colo.; Steve Snow and Rock Labrum, both of Kalispell; Cheyenne Labrum, Provo, Utah, Chris Snow, Billings and Nick Labrum in Kansas; daughters Becky Gibson, Troy and Pam Rushford, Libby; brother John Patton, Grand Junction, Colo.; sisters Bonnie Emery, Grand Junction, Gayle Greening, Joplin, Mo., Judy Boss, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Deena Gourley, American Fork, Utah, 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the LDS Church in Troy.
Visitation was from 1-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements.
Harriet Kienas
Harriet Thon Kienas, 79, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at the Libby Care Center following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born on Sept. 7, 1923, at Kalispell, to Raymond and Cleora Logan Thon.
Harriet graduated from Flathead County High School in 1941 and studied music at the University of Montana in Missoula.
She married Albert E. Kienas on Sept. 7, 1956, and moved to Libby.
Her love of music continued throughout her life.
A longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, Harriet also was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and the Libby-Troy Community Concert Association.
Harriet taught piano and served as church organist in both Kalispelll and Libby.
“Hatsy,” as she was fondly called, enjoyed picnics, time spent at the family cabin on Bitterroot Lake, horses, photography and playing bridge. Her greatest joy was her family, to whom she was devoted.
She is survived by her husband Albert (Al) Kienas, Libby; two daughters, Kim Ruygrok and her husband Jim, Deer Park, Wash., and Kristi Greschen and her husband Charles, Fort Wayne, Ind.; son Jonathan Kienas and his wife Shawn, Kalispell; sister Cleora Sheeran, Albany, Ore.; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers William and Raymond Thon.
Services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Eric Christiansen and Pastor Charles Gieschen officiating.
Interment followed at the City of Libby Cemetery. Visitation was from 1-8 p.m. Friday and until noon Saturday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church.
Julie Scott
Julie Kay Scott, 49, of Troy, died on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
She was born on March 18, 1953, at Albert Lea, Minn., and grew up in the Saint Paul area near Lake Minnetonka.
Julie came to western Montana in 1993 and had lived at Thompson Falls, Troy, Ronan and Libby.
She was employed as a cashier by Town Pump.
Julie was preceded in death by adoptive parents John and Pauline Vanderhoof.
She is survived by her husband Donald Scott of Troy, and sister Connie Johnson and her husband Richard of Olalla, Ore.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kevin Lindgren officiating.
Visitation was from 9 a.m. Monday until the time of service.
Arrangements are under direction of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Robert Wilson
Robert W. Wilson, 82, of Libby, died on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Libby Care Center.
He was born on May 13, 1920, at Bryant, S.D., to William and Gertrude Wilson.
Robert was raised and educated in South Dakota and served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
Following his discharge from the service, Robert lived in the Flathead Valley, working throughout the northwest on major construction projects.
He came to Libby to work on the Libby Dam Project and had lived here permanently for the past 14 years.
Survivors include son David Robert Wilson, Garland, Texas; daughters Linda Ellis and her husband Thomas, Seagoville, Texas, and Donna Crouch and her husband James, Garland, Texas; brother Harold Cottet, Kalispell; sisters Edna May Colville, Missoula; Martha Odegard, Polson, and Alice Buck, Kalispell; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Interment will take place in Texas at a later date.
