Kyle Volkers
Kyle Volkers, 19, of Libby, died Thursday evening, March 28, 2002, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center as the result of injuries received in a vehicle accident near Libby Wednesday morning.
He was born on Nov. 20, 1982, at Libby, to Andy and Colleen Volkers.
Raised and educated in Libby, Kyle graduated from Libby High School with the Class of 2000.
Always active in sports, Kyle played quarterback with the Libby Logger football team and was an outstanding pitcher on the Libby American Legion baseball team.
He was also active in the Youth Search program at St. Joseph’s Parish and had been a student at Miles City Community College.
Survivors include his parents at the family home in Libby; brothers Chad Volkers and his wife Ilene, Kalispell, and Kory Volkers, Libby; his grandfather Frank Finkbiner of Libby, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation was Monday, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home with the parish vigil and rosary service following at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Hannigan as celebrant.
Interment followed at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Memorials in Kyle’s memory may be made to the American Legion Baseball Program.
Bob Field
Former Libby High School teacher Robert V. (Bob) Field, 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Libby Care Center.
He was born on Nov. 28, 1927, at Brownwood, Texas, to W.T. and Lota Mae Brooks Field.
Raised and educated in Brownwood, Bob began working in radio broadcast at age 16.
He served with the Armed Forces Radio Network in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After receiving his honorable discharge in 1947, Bob attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood, earning a bachelor’s degree in history. He later did graduate work at the University of Texas, El Paso.
Bob worked in public relations for the Chamber of Commerce at Amarillo, Texas and served as chamber manager at Tucumcari and Alamogordo, N.M.
He started teaching at El Paso in 1963, and came to Libby in 1970 to teach speech, English and aeronautics at LHS for eight years.
Employed briefly by Boeing at Seattle, Bob also taught school at Sitka, Alaska, Salem, Ore., and Marlin Texas, before returning to El Paso to teach until he retired.
He and his wife returned to Libby in 1990.
A licensed pilot, Bob enjoyed flying for more than 50 years. He was also an avid hunter and firearms and reloading enthusiast. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Cabinet View Country Club and the Elks Lodge.
The ravages of diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease eventually made it impossible to enjoy activities.
Bob was also a member of St. Joseph Parish.
He was preceded in death by his brother William Jr. in 1999, and sister Ruby Sellers in 2000.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, Libby; nephews Simeon (Sam) Sellers III, Lancaster, Calif., and Steven Sellers, McDade, Texas, and his much-loved dogs Taffy and Sandy.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Dan Driscoll as celebrant.
Parish vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment with military honors will take place on Wednesday at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.
Albert Nelson
Albert Edward Nelson, 88, of Libby, died Oct. 9, 2002, at the Libby Care Center, of asbestosis.
Albert’s father was born in Norway and his mother was born in Wisconsin. After they were married they moved to Libby, where Albert was born on Dec. 17, 1913.
He attended Libby schools and after graduating from Libby High School he worked at various jobs in the Libby area.
Albert enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 12, 1940 and served as a medical non-commissioned officer during World War II in New Guinea, receiving various medals including a Bronze Star.
Honorably discharged on Sept. 7, 1945, Albert returned to Libby to work for the J. Neils Lumber Company.
He married Marguerite Hamann of Libby.
Albert retired from St. Regis Paper Company in 1976 and in 1978 he married Mabel Warner.
Hunting and fishing were a big part of Albert’s life. He loved Libby and Libby people, and was a lifelong member of the VFW and the American Legion, serving as a color guard. He was proud of his service to his country although he never bragged about it. He simply did what was best for his country and his home town.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, wives Marguerite and Mabel, and son Jan Nelson.
Survivors include son Neil Nelson and his wife Gailene, Libby; daughter Pamela Starke and her husband John, Prescott, Ariz; step-son Edgar Warner and his wife Betty, Libby; brother Arthur Nelson, Polson; sister Alice Nelson, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Lloyd Behling
Lloyd Behling, 77, of Libby, died Oct. 6, 2002, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital after a long, courageous battle against cancer.
He was born on Dec. 19, 1924, at Menomonie, Wis., to Walter and Sadie Stephen Behling.
Lloyd joined the U.S. Army in April 1943 and proudly served his country during World War II. He received numerous medals and honors while serving in the South Pacific.
After receiving his honorable discharge in February 1946, Lloyd moved to Missoula, where he met Florence Hilton. They were married on June 12, 1947, and according to Lloyd, it was the best thing he ever did.
In 1951, they moved to Libby, where Lloyd worked as a sawyer, mechanic and welder for J. Neils Lumber Company and St. Regis until his early medical retirement in 1985.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a charter member of the Back Country Horsemen. He was also a member of the NRA, DAV and VFW.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, work ethic, and willingness to help others.
Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters, Lloyd is survived by his wife Florence, Libby; daughter Donna Behling, Kalispell; son Douglas Behling and his wife Caring, San Diego, Calif., three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother Art Behling and his wife Marion, Quartzite, Ariz., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday and until noon on Wednesday. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a private graveside service.
Melba Cain
Former Libby resident Melba Cain, 79, died Oct. 3, 2002, at her home in Eureka.
She was born on July 25, 1923, at Ironton, Minn., to Floyd Carvey and Myrtle Wunderlich Carvey.
After coming to Montana with her family as a child, Melba lived at Eureka and Libby.
She worked as a cook and in the Christmas tree industry while living in Eureka.
She married Clem Cain in 1960 at Libby.
At Libby Melba was employed for many years by J. Neils Lumber Company and later for St. Regis until her retirement.
Her husband Clem died in 1985 and in 1987 Melba returned to Eureka.
She is survived by sons Ike Conard, Dave Conard and Skip Conard, all of Eureka; Bill Cain, Eureka and step-son Clem Cain, Libby; sisters Lois Workman, Patty Keller and Yvonne Paine, all of Eureka, and Ida Hoerner, Columbia Falls; brothers Nick Carvey, Floyd Carvey, Lorn Carvey and Steve Carvey, all of Eureka, and Clyde Carvey, Sparks, Nev., 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Tobacco Valley Cemetery.
Visitation took place from 1-8 p.m. on Monday and until noon Tuesday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Eureka.
