Herman Fehrs
Former Libby resident Herman Fehrs, 99, died July 19, 2000, in Florida.
He was born on April 18, 1901, in South Dakota and moved to Tekoa, Wash., in 1937, where he worked as a farmer.
In 1939 Herman moved to Tensed, Idaho, where he hauled grain through World War II. Beginning in 1952 he logged and moved houses until he retired in 1970.
Following retirement, Herman moved to Libby to live with his son Leland until 1994, when he moved to New Hampshire to live with his daughter Mavis.
In 1999 Mavis and her husband Jim, accompanied by Herman, moved to Florida.
Survivors include four sons, Leland, John, Lewis and Bernie and three daughters, Donna, Dorothy and Mavis.
Mayna Pattie
Mayna Belle Pattie, 85, Troy, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
She was born on Oct. 1, 1914, at Foster, Ore., to John Frank and Mamie Tolbert Hufford. Raised and educated in Oregon, Mayna earned a teaching degree at Monmouth, Ore., and the University of Washington.
She taught school in Seattle and at Scio, Ore., retiring in 1974. After retirement she lived at LaComb, Ore., until moving to Troy in 1974.
Mayna was an artist who enjoyed painting in various mediums. She was a vocalist and pianist and enjoyed music composition.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1994.
Survivors include daughter Gay Pattie, Troy; son Grant Foster III, Salem, Ore.; brother Tom Hufford, Sweet Home, Ore.; sisters Hazel Reynolds, Coos Bay, Ore., Helen Morris, Venita, Ore., and Dolores Roberts, Christmas Valley, Ore., and five grandchildren.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Troy.
Interment will follow in the Troy Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Mary SwennesMary L. Swennes, 72, of Troy, died on Sunday, July 30, 2000.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1928, at Kalispell, to Elmer and Clara Bruyer.
Mary was raised and educated in Kalispell and moved to Libby with her husband Richard Swennes in 1951.
Mary was active in her church, in the community and with her loving family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She and Richard had been married for 53 years.
Survivors include her husband Richard; son Jay Swennes and daughter and son-in-law Linda and Rick Erickson; grandchildren Jenelle and Arlona Swennes, Laura, Kevin and Michael Johnson, Nicky Willis, and great-granddaughter Ashley.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Troy.
John Valcore
John R. Valcore, 68, died July 26, 2000, at Fort Harrison.
He was born on Dec. 22, 1931, at Warland, to John and Mary Bainfield Valcore.
John served his country in the U.S. Army in 1952.
He was married to Mardela Bailey and later to Marie Adkins. Both marriages ended in divorce.
Survivors include an adopted daughter Linda Horn, Soda Springs, Idaho; step-children Tom Sutherland, Livingston; Naomi Rohan, Libby; Sherry Cox, Eureka; sister-in-law Joyce Valcore, Bozeman; nephews Tom and Richard Valcore, Eureka; nieces Barbara Pluid, Eureka and Kelly Deal, White Sulphur Springs, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Nels Valcore and stepson Thurman Sutherland.
Committal of cremated remains will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Jacob Walter
Jacob L. Walter, 80, of Troy, died Sept. 26, 2000, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1920, in Rising City, Neb., to Lloyd and Helen Walter.
Jake grew up in Bayard, Neb., where he attended school.
During World War II he worked at the Convair Aircraft factory in San Diego. He married Theresa Giraud on April 17, 1943, in San Diego and they lived in various places before moving to Kalispell in 1955.
Jake worked as a heavy equipment operator in the Flathead area and after he retired enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Theresa; daughter Rena Morton; brother Bill and his wife Nyla, Snohomish, Wash.; sister Beth Lamb and her husband Jim, Oceanside, Calif.; grandchildren Theresa and Jacob, Newport, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation and private burial services have taken place.
Memorials may be sent to Troy Volunteer Fire Department.
John Matz
John Matz, 77, of Libby and Forsyth, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at his winter home in Forsyth, from complications of lung cancer and heart disease.
He was born on April 12, 1923, in Dickinson, N.D., to John and Matilda (Segmiller) Matz.
He attended schools in Dickinson and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Mount Rainier, Wash.
John married Patricia M. Shotwell on May 28, 1949.
He worked for Northern Pacific Transport, Northern Freight Lines and on dam construction with Morrison Knudsen in Montana, California and Idaho until retiring in 1976 due to poor health.
Family, especially his grandchildren, were his first love. He also loved the mountains, fishing, huckleberry picking and “shooting the breeze” with friends.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patricia; three daughters, Danae Matz Bills and her husband Dick; Jeanne Matz Jensen and her husband Bruce, and Linda Matz Staples and her husband Craig; five grandchildren, Erin Bills, Casey and Kirsten Jensen and Gabe and Lindsay Falcon; sister-in-law Lorraine Matz, Billings; half-brother Don Ehli, Dickinson; half-sister Shirley Ehli Carrie, Plano, Ill., and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, step-fathers and brother George.
Cremation has taken place and to honor his wishes no services will be held.
Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is assisting the family with arrangements.
John Dysart
John L. Dysart, 69, the father of a Libby woman and a frequent visitor to Montana, died Nov. 15, 2000, in Greensboro, Ga.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1931, in New Jersey and was a 1948 graduate of New Jersey High School in Bloomfield and a 1962 university graduate.
Dysart was retired after working as a programmer and production planner for Schering-Plough Corporation in Kenilworth, N.J. He was also the former owner and manager of J&J Sports Shop in Bloomfield.
An avid outdoorsman, Dysart enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf.
He had lived in Greensboro for six years and was a member of the host committee at Reynolds Plantation and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield.
Survivors include his wife Joyce Dysart, Greensboro; three children, son Steve Dysart and his wife Terry, Bozeman; daughter Carol Oedewaldt and her husband Terry, Libby, and son David Dysart and his wife Angela, Blair, Neb.; and four grandchildren, Chelsey and Stacey Oedewaldt, Libby and Katrina and Christopher Dysart, Blair.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Oliver and Isabella McQuilken Dysart.
Memorial services were conducted Nov. 18, at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro with the Rev. Dr. Ford O’Segner officiating.
