Evelyn Backen
Evelyn M. Backen, 77, a 50-year resident, died on Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at her home in Libby.
She was born on May 24, 1921, at Whitefish, to Andrew and Avis Stevens Flint.
Evelyn attended Whitefish schools and married George Backen at Whitefish in 1947. They moved to Libby in 1949.
Evelyn enjoyed bowling, reading, picking huckleberries, hunting, farming, white water rafting and family gatherings.
She was preceded in death by her husband George.
Survivors include sons David Backen and his wife Louise, Kula, Hawaii; Rodney Backen and his wife Diane, Littleton, Colo; Gerald Backen and his wife Donna, Plymouth, Wash.; Daniel Backen and his wife Kathy, Libby; Jack Backen and his wife Starr, Boise, Idaho, and Joel Backen and his wife June, Billings; daughter Teddi Hyde and her husband Skip, Boise; sisters Nellie Lovell, Amity, Ore.; Gladys Crow, Whitefish, and Elaine Lauess, Libby; 29 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Local arrangements were by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Miriam Daugharty
Miriam Joyce Daugharty of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at her home.
She was born in Humboldt, Minn., to Frederick and Anne Hare Gooselaw and grew up in Libby.
Miriam attended Libby schools, graduated from Libby High School, and attended Northwestern Business College in Spokane.
She married Duane A. Daugharty on July 21, 1947 in Libby and since 1959 the family has lived in Coeur d’Alene, where Miriam was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was also proprietor of The Clothes Closet in downtown Coeur d’Alene for 18 years.
Miriam is survived by her husband, Dr. D.A. Daugharty, Coeur d’Alene; daughters and sons-in-law Barbara Daugharty and Howard Sterner and Susan Daugharty-Fowler and Bradley Fowler, all of Coeur d’Alene; Stacey Daugharty and Matthew Wacker, Seattle; Amy and Thomas Hoffmann, Denver; daughter Jan Daugharty, Coeur d’Alene; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Ann Daugharty, Coeur d’Alene; sister Patricia Brommer, Hayden Lake, Idaho, and her nine grandchildren, Brooke, Connor, Daniel, Emma, Erin, Jackson, Jessica, Katie and Sara.
She was preceded in death by her brother Pershing in 1994 and son Duane in 1995.
Miriam was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Kootenai-Benewah Medical Auxiliary, Hayden Lake Country Club and Avondale Country Club.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene with Father Roger LaChance as celebrant.

Arlys Drace
Arlys I. Drace, 67, Columbia Falls, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Eau Claire, Wis., to Lawrence and Esther Basacker. She was raised and educated in Wisconsin.
Arlys married James Drace on Dec. 4, 1948, at Reno, Nev. They lived in Richmond, Calif., until moving to Columbia Falls in 1972.
Arlys loved bowling and held high score for the ladies league for a single game at the Glacier Lanes. She also wrote a bowling column for the Hungry Horse News for many years.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, needle point, hunting and fishing. Her canned salmon won awards at county and state fairs.
Survivors include her husband Jim, Columbia Falls; daughters Sue Keller, Columbia Falls and Virginia Medill, Libby; son James Drace, Shelby; two brothers, Bill Basacker, Livermore, Calif., and Everett Basacker, Stevensville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Columbia Falls with the Rev. Thomas Gopp officiating. Inurnment followed at Fairview Cemetery.
The family has suggested memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls is in charge of arrangements.
Sylvia Glidden
Sylvia Anna Landon Taylor Glidden, 51, the mother of a Libby schoolteacher, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at her home in Evergreen.
She was born Sept. 5, 1947, at Kalispell, to Carol and Meryl Landon.
A loving mom and grandma, Sylvia’s life revolved around her husband, children and grandchildren. Her family always came first.
She loved the outdoors, camping and fishing whenever possible. She traveled throughout the state to attend sporting events in which her grandchildren participated.
Preceded in death by her parents, a sister Alice and a brother-in-law Chuck, Sylvia is survived by her husband William Glidden, Kalispell; daughter Launa and her husband Keith Shepard, Kalispell; son Rick and his wife Heather, Libby; grandchildren Tyler, Katie and Libby Shepard, all of Kalispell, and Quinn, Tucker and Maddie Taylor, all of Libby; step-daughter Angie Jean Glidden, Kennewick, Wash., step-grandchildren Jerricka, Grant and Hannah Glidden, all of Kennewick; brothers Roy and Don Landon, Kalispell; Marvin, Jim and Frank, all of Oregon; and sisters Nadine Christie and Grace Watters, Kalispell.
Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Tuesday at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Harper of Northridge Heights Church of God officiating.
Burial will follow at Glacier Memorial Gardens.

Orville Gullingsrud
Orville C. Gullingsrud, 71, of Libby, died on Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital, of apparent heart failure.
He was born Feb. 1, 1927, at Park River, N.D., to Oliver and Tillie Gullingsrud.
Orville attended Park River schools and graduated from Park River High School.
He moved to Libby in 1950 to begin a 26-year career with J. Neils Lumber Company and St. Regis Paper Company, retiring in 1976.
Orville enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, visiting, building things with his hands and taking care of the birds and animals around his house.
Survivors include son Rick Gullingsrud, Libby; daughters Julie Gullingsrud, Libby; Deanna Frederick, Kalispell and Marylou Adams, Libby; sisters Alice Sparks, Albany, Ore.; and Opal Mullen and Joan Billedeau, both of Seattle; brother Jerome Gullingsrud, Chico, Calif.; aunt Julia Fuller, Long Beach, Calif., and seven grandchildren.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Local arrangements were by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Minnie Smith
Longtime resident Minnie Ethyl (Grandma) Smith, 89, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1999, at her home in Troy.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1909, in Sheridan, Wyo., to Burt and Dora Daggett.
At the age of 5, Minnie moved with her family to Stone Hill, where she attended grade school. She attended high school in Libby.
She married Dick Smith on July 20, 1925. They had been married 67 years when her husband died in 1993.
In addition to her husband, Minnie was preceded in death by daughters Della Mae and Dorothy Smith Brown.
Survivors include daughters Josie Rice, Sheri Paasch and Bonnie Denison, all of Troy, and Ardella Berg, Martinsdale; son Melvin Smith, Apache Springs, Ariz., and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Troy Church of God with the Rev. Gene Bushnell officiating.
Josephine Walkinghorse
Josephine Walkinghorse, 80, of Libby, died on Jan. 17, 1999, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
She was born on Jan. 8, 1919, at Red Lodge and came to Libby as a child with her parents George Crotteau and Helen Josephine Upham Crotteau.
Josephine attended Libby schools before moving to Seattle where she lived for 25 years, returning to Libby in the late 1950s.
She married Al Walkinghorse in June 1962.
Survivors include her husband Al, Libby; daughters Bonnie Cloin and Rita St. Pierre, both of Libby; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by son Robert Crotteau in 1973 and sister Isabelle Carroll in 1991.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Thursday at Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
