Eleanore Yurg
Eleanore Otteson Yurg, adored mother, grandmother and friend, and a former Troy area resident, died of heart failure on July 10, 2003, at her new home at Bothell, Wash.
Born at Minneapolis, Minn., to Ruth and George Otteson, Eleanore’s adventurous spirit inspired her to travel alone at age 19 to Alaska, where she met and married Frank Anthony Yurg.
They moved to Honolulu, where their four children were born, before they moved to Van Nuys, Calif., and then to Seattle.
Eleanore volunteered her life to non-stop good causes ? Eastern Star, Jobs Daughters, PTA, Cut Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Lutheran Church.
After devoting most of her life to raising and loving her children, she moved with Frank to Troy, where she lived among new friends and a bevy of wildlife, becoming active with animal rights and writing a column for The Western News until Frank’s death on Dec. 16, 2001.
In June 2002 Eleanor moved back to Washington to be near children and grandchildren, living at Bothell where her charming home became the family focal point.
Survivors include her brother Sonny Otteson and her sister Bev Johnson and her family in Minnesota; her four children Nancy Erwin and her husband Jack, Rochester, Wash.; Bob Yurg and his wife Marlene, Gig Harbor; Wash.; Cathy Spiegelberg and her husband Larry, Bothell, and Lori Gese and her husband Joe, Snohomish, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Alecia and Luke Erwin, Joe and Cindy Anderson and her fiancé Dave Jackson; Matt Spiegelberg, Tim, Brian and Darren Gese; grand-niece Fran Wayne, Everett, Wash., and an aunt, Henrietta Aldous, along with countless other relatives and friends.
Eleanore was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her parents and younger sister Norma Hayden.
Friends and relatives are invited to gather for a celebration of Eleanore’s life from 2-6 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, at her home. The celebration will also include Frank’s life with Eleanore.
Memorials may be made to a local animal shelter.
Darrell Condit
Darrell W. Condit, 48, died July 10, 2003, at his home near Troy.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1955, at Memphis, Tenn., to Harold Ray Condit and Jean Tyler Condit.
Darrell was raised and educated at Mount Shasta, Calif., and after graduating from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
He came to Montana in 1953, attending and graduating from the Lincoln County Campus of Flathead Valley Community College at Libby.
Darrell later was employed at the Libby Care Center.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his children, Ashley Mauree and Bobby Kaye, Troy; his mother Jean Condit, Troy, and brothers and sisters Harold Ray Condit Jr., in Oregon; Thomas R. Condit and Cheryl Kent, both of Troy, and Richard K. Condit, Tacoma, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services were conducted on June 12 at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Jack Daggett
Longtime Libby resident Jack R. Daggett, 82, died July 9, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1921, at Eureka, to Clarence Daggett and Audrey Rayson Daggett.
Jack moved to Libby with his family as a small child, attending Libby schools and graduating from Libby High School with the 38-member Class of 1941.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Following his honorable discharge, Jack lived for a time in Spokane before returning to Libby.
Jack worked with his father as building contractors in the Libby area and he later worked on the Libby Dam Project before being employed by W.R. Grace & Co.
An avid outdoorsman, Jack enjoyed fishing, hunting and panning for gold.
A skilled craftsman, Jack also enjoyed making wooden toys and yard ornaments, as well as oil painting. A trombonist, he had a lifelong love of music,
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Arlene in 1992, and his son Paul Daggett in April 2003.
Survivors include his wife Shirley, Libby; children Wendi Straer, Edgewood, Wash.; Noni Mitchell, Spokane; Jenny Fredrics in Texas, and Mark Daggett, Libby; his sister Joyce Olson, Kalispell, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Wallace Torpen
Former Libby resident Wallace Torpen, 79, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at his home in Helena.
He was born on Nov. 14, 1923, at Comertown to Edwin and Hilda Torpen.
Wallace grew up in the Comertown area where he attended school.
He was a veteran of military service during World War II.
Wallace came to Libby in 1956 to work for St. Regis Paper Company.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three brothers.
Survivors include a sister, Alice Westrup, Helena, brother Reynold Torpen, Auburn, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Helena.
Edward Gaston
Edward A. Gaston, 75, of Libby, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Libby Care Center.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1927, at Graceville, Minn., to Edward and Emma Hinkle Gaston.
In 1929 the family moved to Troy where Edward was raised and educated.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, returning to northwest Montana following his honorable discharge in 1948.
Edward lived in Libby and worked for W.R. Grace & Co., for 31 years until retiring.
A kind and generous person, Edward enjoyed traveling, camping and boating and maintained an active interest in science and space technology.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Leon.
Survivors include his two daughters, Susan Smith, Libby, and Diane McKay, Superior; sister Vivian Burt in California; grandchildren Tia, Kari, Craig, Ryan and Tyler; great-grandchildren Trevor and Elijah and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Milnor Lake Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Tanner Johnson
Tanner James Johnson, infant son of Kimberly Johnson and Kent Helland, died on July 4, 2003, at his home in Libby.
He was born in Libby on April 25, 2003.
Tanner is survived by his parents, a sister Stormy Rowell and brother Dalton Rowell, both of Libby, and brother Nathaniel Helland of Kalispell.
Tanner is also survived by grandparents Wes and Mavis Johnson of Libby and Gordon and Nancy Helland of Kalispell.
Private services were conducted at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home on Tuesday.
Edwin Schopp
Edwin R. Schopp, 76, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Libby Care Center.
He was born on Feb. 12, 1927, at Dorchester, Wis., to Edward and Evelyn Schopp.
Raised and educated at Rib Lake, Wis., Edwin served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, returning to Wisconsin following his discharge.
He lived at Arlington, Wis., working as a mechanic for the Del Monte Company for 22 years before retiring and moving to Montana in 1989.
Edwin married Dorthy Ross on Feb. 11, 1964.
He and his wife lived at Noxon, in the Bull Lake area of Troy and later in Libby.
An avid outdoorsman, Edwin enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife Dorthy, Troy, daughters Donna Schopp, Troy, and Mary Schopp, Kalispell; son Wayne Schopp, Barnville, Wis.; sisters Doris Roming, Gilman, Wis., and Barbara Bowiec, Milwaukee, Wis.; brothers Michael Kolecheck, Rib Lake; Francis Kolecheck, Racine, Wis.; Joseph Kolecheck, Westboro, Wis., and David Kolecheck, Gilman, and five grandchildren.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Whitepine Cemetery in Trout Creek.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
