Don Sigismond
Don Lewis Sigismond, 68, of Libby, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2003.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1935, at Detroit, Mich., to Louis and Gladys Sheehy Sigismond.
Don grew up at Grosse Pointe, Mich., where he attended school, graduating from Grosse Pointe High School in 1953.
Don attended New Mexico State University for three years and came to Libby in 1965.
He married Janice Anderson on Nov. 5, 1966.
Don worked for Liberty Loan, St. Regis Paper Co. and Champion International before leaving Libby to work for the Judith Gap Lumber Co., and the Sierra Pacific Lumber Co. in Quincy, Calif.
He retired in August 1997.
Don enjoyed woodworking, metal work, fishing, hunting and reading.
Survivors include his wife Jan, Libby; son Lance Sigismond and his wife Neta, Hardin; grandchildren Quentin, Samantha and Winter; sister Judith Domenik and her husband Gene, Venice, Calif., and numerous cousins and other relatives.
Mass of the Resurrection was recited at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Visitation from 1-7 p.m. Monday was followed by Rosary at 7 p.m.
Local arrangements were by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Pete Waylett
Libby native Dale B. (Pete) Waylett, 54, died of a heart attack on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at his home at Dillon.
He was born on April 18, 1949, at Libby, to Harry and Nellie Waylett.
Pete attended Libby schools, graduating from Libby High School with the Class of 1967.
He attended Western Montana College of Education on an athletic scholarship, competing in basketball, football and track and graduating in 1971. He earned his graduate degree and endorsement from WMC and Montana State University.
For the past 32 years, Pete taught elementary and middle school students in the Dillon Elementary School District, touching the lives of hundreds of students who were in his classes.
One of the loves of Pete’s life was basketball and he spent 30 years refereeing basketball from the junior high level to college. He served as an NAIA official for 23 years and had been a respected NCAA Division I official for the past 19 years.
Pete was a member of the Montana National Guard, retiring with the rank of major after 23 years of service.
Pete and his wife Donna shared a passion for horses. Pete was a past director of the Montana State Horse Show Association, a member of the Montana Quarter Horse Association and a life member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association.
Pete served Beaverhead County on the fair board for 16 years.
He is survived by his wife Donna, Dillon; son Tyler, daughter Randi Wickens, her husband Travis and their son Coy; brothers Dan Waylett in Graston, Va., and Don Waylett in Bellingham, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be made to Beaverhead County Fair Board to support youth activities.
At Pete’s request there will be no service.

Kenneth Bartz
Kenneth L. Bartz, 56, of Troy, died on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at his home in the Yaak.
He was born on June 3, 1947, at Tacoma, Wash., to Frederick and Mildred Ohmart Bartz.
He grew up at Fife, Wash., where he attended schools, graduating from Fife High School in 1965.
Kenneth attended Eastern Washington University at Cheney, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1970.
He entered the U.S. Army, serving for eight years and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. Memorials may be made to Alert, Wings or the Yaak Volunteer Ambulance.
Survivors include his wife Anita Bartz, Troy; daughters Lt. Michelle Bartz and her husband Jason Blubaugh, Great Falls; and Julie Tastad and her husband Warren, Sultan, Wash.; grandson Garrett Blubaugh, Great Falls, brother Douglas Bartz and his wife Karen, Kansas City, Mo., mother Mildred Bartz, Yelm, Wash., and numerous friends and extended family members.
A celebration of Ken’s life will take place on Saturday, July 19, at 7 p.m. at the Yaak River Tavern.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Mary Ann Lanahan
Mary Ann Lanahan, 67, a frequent Libby visitor who spent the past three summers here, died July 1, 2003, at Tucson, Ariz.
Her great-grandfather, Pat J. Kelly, was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1844 and moved to the Truckee Meadows from Sacramento, Calif., in 1863. He and his wife established a 400-acre ranch in the Reno area and in 1864 he and a partner operated two hotels there.
Mary Ann was born on Aug. 15, 1936, at Oakland, Calif., to Dr. William and Amidol (Pat) Kelly Lanahan, and lived most of her life in Nevada.
She attended St. Thomas Aquinas School and Bishop Monague High School, graduating in 1954 and continuing her education at the University of Nevada at Reno, where she was affiliated with Delta Delta Delta.
She was employed by Nevada Bell, MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Comstock Hotel and John Ascuaga’a Nugget.
After retiring from the Nugget where she was executive director of sales, Mary Ann moved to Tucson.
Through her association with the Rotary Club at Saddle Brook, Mary Ann became a mentor and teacher at the Catalina Mountain School for troubled teenage boys, teaching writing, reading and social skills preparing the boys to re-enter society.
In May she received the (Arizona) Governor’s Award for exceptional work with Arizona’s most troubled youth.
During her time in Libby Mary Ann attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Montana Athletic Club.
She loved Montana, especially Libby. In 1999 Mary Ann presented a two-day seminar here on tourism and attracting conventions.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Terry Lanahan, nephew James Lanahan and niece Lynn Pearce of Los Altos Hills, Calif.
A memorial service was celebrated at St. Therese The Little Flower Church in Reno, followed by an Irish wake at the Nugget.
Inurnment of ashes will take place at a later date at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery at Reno.

Susan Weller
Former Libby resident Susan Dean Weller, 49, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
She was born on Oct. 28, 1953, at San Bernardino, Calif., to John and Marjorie Henderson Boyd.
Susan grew up in the Glendora area in California, where she attended school as a less than enthusiastic student.
She moved to Montana in 1977, following a brother who had lived for some time in the Kalispell area.
Susan moved to Libby in 1979, working in a bank until she had a chance to work with the Montana Historical Society doing interpretive work on the Libby Dam Project.
She later worked as an interpretive park ranger, meeting Carl Wolf who cultivated her love for fly fishing and bird watching.
Birding developed into a career in bird survey field work for various private, federal and state agencies. Susan was happiest when she was in the field.
She married Gregory R. Weller on July 30, 1985, and they moved from Libby to Cataldo, Idaho in 1988 because of his work.
Her love of the land prompted her to start the Rose Lake Bird Club and the Coeur d’Alene Audubon Society, becoming active in a number of environmental causes which she pursued aggressively until her death.
She resumed her formal education at North Idaho College, where she was regarded as a bright and incisive student with a keen interest in literature.
She began to write and her poetry was published in the Trestle Creek Review.
Susan was passionate about everything she did, putting all her energies into her passions.
She loved her family, writing and the land and worked tirelessly for their good.
Preceded in death by her parents, Susan is survived by her husband Gregory, Coeur d’Alene, and an older brother.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Birds of Prey Center in Kuna, Idaho.
Local arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
