John Holt
John W. Holt, 62, of Troy, died of natural causes on Sunday morning, March 9, 2003, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
He was born on Nov. 12, 1940, in Missouri, to Hermus and Ellen Taylor Holt.
Survivors include his wife Viola Holt, Troy; son David R. Holt, Troy; brother Louis L. Holt, Breckenridge, Mo.; sister Sussie Etherton, Independence, Mo.; grandson Tommy Dean Holt, Troy; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Diana Holt, Breckenridge, Mo., Bruce Etherton, Independence, Mo., Paul and Carolyn Ashman, Troy, Lloyd Burnett, Hamilton, Mo., Jack and Barbara Morrill in Missouri, Don and Sherran Burnett in Florida, daughter-in-law Betty Holt, Troy, nieces and nephews Bradly Ryan, Hope Hovey, Tysin Hovey, Carrie Hovey, Jamie Hovey, Maranda Ashman, Heidi Ashman, Andra Reynolds, Tim and Jeff Etherton, Shane Burnett, Joe and Jackie Pemberton, Laurie Ann, Tim and Tracy Burris.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Church of God in Troy.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Local arrangements are by the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.

Paul Nelson
Paul Nelson, 69, who was born and raised in Troy, died on March 6, 2003, at Las Vegas, Nev.
He was born on Feb. 1, 1934, at Troy, to Carl and Anna Nelson.
In addition to immediate family members in the Las Vegas area, Paul is survived by brother Otto Nelson in Libby and sister Irene Winings, Mountain Home, Idaho.

Mike Broden
Paul M. (Mike) Broden, 53, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Village Health Care in Missoula.
He was born on March 7, 1949, at Oakland, Calif., to Bob and Elsie Broden.
Raised and educated at Libby, Mike graduated from Libby High School in 1967.
He attended Concordia College at Morehead, Minn., for a year and a half and later worked for St. Regis Paper Company at Libby.
Mike suffered from mental illness and subsequent physical limitations made it necessary for him to live at Village Health Care in Missoula since 1998.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1994.
Survivors include his mother Elsie Broden, Libby; four sisters, Linda Randash and her husband Rodney, Stevensville; Brenda Cooper and her husband Gary and Kathy Ague and her husband Tim, all of Libby; Kris Reid and her husband Ray, Clarksville, Tenn; five brothers, Bob Broden and his wife Vicki, Pendleton, Ore., Alan Broden and his wife Shirley, Hayden, Idaho; Bruce Broden, Libby, Kirk Broden and his wife Tami, Tacoma, Wash., and Kim Broden and his wife Bobbie, Libby, 20 nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church followed by interment services at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Visitation at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home was from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday and until noon Monday.

Genevieve Candee
Former Libby resident Genevieve B. Candee, 87, died on Feb. 28, 2003, at Rapid City, S.D.
Gen was born on Aug. 20, 1915, at Plentywood, to William and Margaret Best.
She moved with her family to Spokane, where she attended school, graduating from Holy Names Normal School with an education degree.
She married Marshall G. Candee of Jennings in 1938 and they moved to Libby.
After World War II ended, Gen traveled to Germany with the couple’s children to join her husband. Gen and Marshall both worked for the U.S. government and enjoyed countless adventures.
After returning from Germany Gen taught in Libby and at Olympia, Wash., retiring in 1973.
Gen moved back to Libby in 1979 and could be seen tending to her flower garden at her home near the high school.
Her final move, in 1999, was to Rapid City to be with her grandson Bill and his family who will miss her determination, outspoken manner, wit and spirit.
Gen was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harvey and husband Marshall.
Survivors include her children, Marshall G. Candee III, and his wife Karen, Palo Alto, Calif., and Garie and her husband Kenny Janicke, Medford, Ore., sisters Marie Koller in California and Olive Bruno in Washington, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A small family service will be held at a later date and memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Fred Clark
Fred F. Clark Jr., 81, lifetime resident of the Kootenai Valley and longtime Libby businessman, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
He was born to early-day county residents Fred Clark Sr. and Dora Marston Clark on Dec. 29, 1921, at Libby.
Raised and educated in Libby, Fred graduated from Libby High School with the Class of 1939.
He attended the University of Iowa until called to serve with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He married June Miller of Libby on April 5, 1943, at Charleston, S.C., before leaving for duty overseas.
Returning to Libby after the war was over, Fred joined his father-in-law Harold Miller in the operation of Miller’s Clothing Store. He later traveled as a clothing and sundries sales representative until retirement.
Growing up in Libby, Fred was active in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He continued to support the Boy Scouts throughout his life.
He had a deep love for and understanding of the outdoors and especially enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on Crystal Lake.
Fred was an excellent source of historical information regarding the Kootenai Valley.
He was active in numerous community organizations and served on the board of trustees for St. John’s Lutheran Hospital and Libby School District 4 and was on the board of directors of First National Bank for more than 37 years.
A longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, he served as an elder for many years. He was also a member and past president of the Libby Rotary Club.
Over the years he participated in Toastmasters, Libby Igniters Car Club, Libby Rifle Club, Model A Ford Club of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Libby Heritage Museum.
His interests and hobbies included antique automobiles and a lifelong love for music, both playing an instrument and listening. He enjoyed being a husband and father and in recent years, thoroughly enjoyed the role of loving grandfather to his nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife June at the family home in Libby; four children, Fred (Rick) Clark and his wife Glenice, Puyallup, Wash., John Clark and his wife Judy, Kalispell; Martha Dahm and her husband Stephen, Libby, and Tom Clark and his wife Brenda, Spokane.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Eric Christiansen officiating.
Interment will follow in the City of Libby Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Memorials may be sent to St. John Lutheran Church, Libby Heritage Museum or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lynn Paulsen
Former Libby resident Lynn Paulsen, 55, died at his home in Dodge City, Kan., on Feb. 19, 2003.
He is survived by three children, Lewis, Becky and Sandra, all in Dodge City; brothers Dave and Tom Paulsen, Libby, Larry and Bob Paulsen, Cornell, Wis., and sisters Nancy Hickethier, Cornell, Bobbie Bauer, Melbourne, Fla., and Rececca Lipke and Diane Lang, Eau Claire, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services were conducted at Holcombe, Wis., on Feb. 28.

Lois Smart
Lois D. Smart, 92, of Libby, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
She was born on July 27, 1910, at Kalispell, to Charles W. Disbrow and Laura Redecker Disbrow.
Lois was raised and educated in the Kalispell-Polson area.
She married Stanley R. Smart on Nov. 12, 1927, at Anaconda.
They lived in Missoula from 1929-1948, operating the Texaco Service Station.
In 1948 they moved to Libby, where they operated Libby Motors and later the Smart Oil Company.
Stanley Smart preceded his wife in death in 1983.
Lois was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women’s Association and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She thoroughly enjoyed being a mother and grandma and helping others.
For many years Lois was a volunteer at the Libby Care Center.
She was also preceded in death by brother William Disbrow and daughters-in-law Phyllis Smart and Joan Smart.
Survivors are her five sons, Royal Smart, Crystal Lakes, Ill.; Jim Smart, Libby; Bill Smart, Tucson, Ariz.; Doug Smart, LaConner, Wash., and Ted Smart, Lake Oswego, Ore., 15 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Wallace Smith officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church, 101 Mahoney Rd., Libby, or to Gideons International 2015 Kootenai River Rd., Libby.
Arrangements are under the care of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
