Leland Fehrs
Leland Fehrs, 72, of Libby, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 17, 1931, in South Dakota, the second of the seven children of Herman and Bernice Fehrs.
The family moved to Tekoa, Wash., in 1937, and to Tensed, Idaho in 1939, where Leland attended grade school. He went to high school in Plummer, Idaho.
Leland worked in the woods in Idaho for a few years before moving to Libby in 1950 to work as a sawyer in the woods for J. Neils Lumber Company.
He married Marge McKinnie in 1952 and they raised their three children in Libby.
Leland started his own logging and construction company in 1957 and worked until retiring in 1997.
After retiring Leland enjoyed activities at the Senior Citizen Center and the Libby Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by an older sister Donna and a brother John.
Survivors include his three children, Linda in Pasco, Wash., Julie of Spokane and Kim of Libby; sister Dorothy in Spokane, brother Lou, Libby, sister Mavis in Florida and brother Bernie in Las Vegas, Nev.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Libby Christian Church.
Leland’s children will appreciate the opportunity to share memories of their father with friends and family members at a potluck gathering at 1 p.m. Saturday at Helen’s Tap Room.
Stella Vinson
Estella Isabella (Stella) Vinson, 86, of Libby, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
She was born on Jan. 25, 1917, at Lamar, Colo.
During her childhood, Stella traveled with her family by horse and wagon to Montrose, Colo., Baker, Ore., and back to Craig, Colo.
She married Orton Warren Vinson on Jan. 30, 1934, at Hamilton, Colo.
Stella was a homemaker and was employed for 10 years by St. Regis Paper Company.
A Rebekah for 51 years, Stella was a member of Medora Rebekah Lodge No. 53 at Libby. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening, quilting, traveling and loving her family.
Stella is survived by three daughters, Sharren Cohenour and her husband Gene, Colleen Stewart and her husband Lee, all of Libby, and Glenda Weaver, Bozeman; grandchildren Morna Taminich, Ventura, Calif.; Michelle Lamey, Libby; Mark Cohenour, Kent, Wash.; Randy Stewart, Libby, and Cameron and Avery Weaver, Bozeman; great-grandchildren Nickolas and Gene Taminich, Ventura, Calif.; Jolene Kvapil, Scottsbluff, Neb.; Jake and Kyle Cohenour, Billings, and Cierra Stewart, Libby; sister-in-law June Vinson, Kalispell, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Medora Rebekah Lodge Scholarship Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Mary Margaret Dacquisto
Mary Margaret (Marge) Dacquisto, 86, of Libby, died on March 13, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
She was born on Jan. 10, 1917, at Chicago, to William and Anna Morgan and moved with her family to southern California where she was raised and educated.
Marge worked for the Hughes Aircraft Company and later as a meat wrapper for Lucky’s Supermarkets until retiring and moving to Libby about 10 years ago.
She enjoyed dancing and fishing and the telling of a good joke.
Marge was preceded in death by her husband Tony, son Fred (Jim) Pedersen, daughter Dana Davidson and her parents.
Survivors include daughter Sharon Parker and her husband Ron, Libby, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and good friend Kay Spencer.
Private interment will take place at Oceanside, Calif.
Memorials may be made to Wings, P.O. Box 1550, Libby MT 59923.
Arrangements are under care of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Benjamin Gould
Benjamin R. Gould, 77, a former Libby area logger, died on March 6, 2003, at his home near Charlo.
He was born on May 23, 1925, at Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to James B. and Caroline M. Gould. They preceded him in death along with three sisters and two brothers.
Benny served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943-1945, in the Philippine campaign.
After completing his enlistment, Benny worked in the mining industry in Butte and the logging industry in the Libby area.
Survivors include sisters Ella Jean Droll, Ajo, Ariz., and Theresa Lorenze, Mullan, Idaho; brothers Archie Tobiska, Moscow, Idaho, Joe Tobiska, Coos Bay, Ore., and Harvey Gould, Dixon; daughters Debby Kirwan, Pablo, and Rita Rose Payne, Perma, 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He will be missed by his many friends and relatives.
A memorial service was held at Leon Hall near Charlo on March 15.
Honorary pallbearers were Tag Jamison, Louis Polinsky, John Webber, Red Stevens, Bud Roe, LaRue Melton, Louie Palmer and Greg Shastner.
Everett John Harris
Everett John Harris, 91, of Libby, died on March 11, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1911, at Huntingburg, Ind., to John C. and Elfrieda Harris.
Everett grew up in southern Indiana and graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1929.
He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating with the Class of 1933. A lifetime member of the USNA Alumni Association and enjoyed correspondence with some of his classmates throughout his life.
After completing his service in the Navy in 1935, Everett moved to Southern California where he worked with his brother in the Long Beach shipyards until the start of World War II, when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps to again serve his country.
In 1947 Everett moved to San Francisco where he worked as an engineer and eventually started his own business.
He married Nina Fern on July 15, 1950, and they settled in San Mateo, Calif., where they raised their two sons.
When his wife died in 1991, Everett moved to Reno, Nev., for a short time before moving to Libby.
An active member of Libby Baptist Church, Everett loved the Lord and his church family.
In addition to his wife Nina, Everett was preceded in death by his parents, brother Orville Harris, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; sister Helen Gutzweiler, Tempe, Ariz.; son Gary Harris of Cupertino, Calif.; grandson Scot Harris, USN, of Florida, and other family members and friends.
Survivors include son Michael Harris and Mike’s daughters Tina and Lisa in Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandchildren Laurie Harris, Berkeley, Calif.; David and Katie Harris, Libby; great-grandchildren Nicole Sargent, Berkeley; Tyler Tringas, Pensacola, Fla.; Jacob, Jennifer and Jesse Harris, Libby, and Jeff Dennis, Denver, Colo, and great-great-grandchildren Cyan Dennis, Denver, and countless others who knew and loved him.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday at the Libby Baptist Church and there will be a graveside service on Saturday at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo.
Helene Hustuft
Helene Ann Hustuft, 74, of Libby, died on March 10, 2003, at her home.
She was born on July 5, 1928, at Fort Yates, N.D., to Peter and Magdalene Schweitzer Fischer.
She grew up and attended schools in North Dakota and South Dakota.
Helene moved to Butte in 1951 and from Butte to Libby in 1966.
Helene enjoyed sewing, crocheting and outdoor activities.
A son Alfred Swearingen, brothers Peter, Lawrence and Ole and sisters Christina and Magdalene preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Mike Schmitt, Seattle, Wash., Charlie Swearingen, Las Vegas, Nev., Claude Bailor and his wife Judy and Pete Bailor, all of Kalispell; daughters Kathy Cunningham, Maggie Olsen and her husband Mark and Charlene Lauer and her husband Jaymen, all of Libby; sisters Catherine Daniels and her husband Tom, Black Diamonds, Wash., and Eva Rustad of Minnesota, 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel.
