Leo Huber
Leo C. Huber, 74, of Libby, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital.
He was born on July 10, 1927, at Savage, to Theodore and Margaret Huber.
Raised and educated in the Savage and Sidney areas, Leo later served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He returned to the Sidney area before working in mining in Nevada and New Mexico, later going back to Savage to operate the family farm.
Leo married Emelia Entzel Renner on March 24, 1961, at Sidney.
They moved to Libby in June 1966 and Leo worked in construction on the Libby Dam Project and later in construction in Alaska.
He and his wife purchased the Dome Theater and the Libby Drive-In Theater in 1980.
Leo was a member of St. Joseph Parish, the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles.
Survivors include his wife Emelia, Libby; his children, Michael Renner, Corvallis, Ore., Bonnie Zwang and her husband Bob, Corvallis; Margee Wilson and her husband Bert, Denver, Colo., and Shyla Huber, Pasadena, Calif; seven brothers, Joe Huber, Ellensberg, Wash.; twin brother Pete Huber, Cozad, Neb.; Alvin Huber, Winnemucca, Nev.; Harold Huber, Great Falls; Richard Huber, Billings; Ted Huber, Great Falls, and Don Huber, Wolf Point; sisters Viola Fisher, Sidney, and Eileen Loegering, Billings, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Clyde Renner in 1983.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Hannigan as celebrant.
Interment with military honors will follow at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Visitation will begin Friday afternoon at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home with parish vigil and rosary at 7 p.m.
Verdelle Thompson
Longtime Libby elementary teacher Verdelle Thompson, 97, died Wednesday evening, May 8, 2002, at the Libby Care Center.
She was born on May 20, 1904, at Waterman, Ill., to Charles and Eugenie Fuller.
At the age of 9, Verdelle moved with her family to New Richland, Minn., where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1921.
She attended Mankato State Teachers College, graduating in 1924. She later furthered her education at teachers’ colleges in Billings, Dillon and Cheney, Wash.
Verdelle taught in Minnesota and North Dakota before coming to Libby in 1932, where she taught first, third and fifth grades, as well as general music.
She married Sam A. Thompson on Oct. 29, 1933.
Verdelle also taught for a time in the Kalispell school system before returning to Libby in the mid-1950’s.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers, Verdelle is survived by three children, Genelle Richardson, Spring Hill, La.; Karen Glick, Somers, and Dr. Gale Thompson, Seattle; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Les Nelson officiating.
Interment will be in the City of Libby Cemetery.

Sherrye Buchanan
Former Libby resident Sherrye J. Buchanan, 53, died May 1, 2002, in Ogden, Utah.
She was born on Dec. 30, 1948, at Artesia, N.M., to H.G. and Barbara Buchanan.
Sherrye graduated from high school in Las Vegas, Nev.
Survivors include daughter Kimberly Lockman, Ketchikan, Alaska; sister Reita Love, Ogden; brother Kenneth Buchanan and his wife Kathleen, Sun Valley, Nev.; grandchildren Justin and Logan Brickey, Libby, and Lilly and Alissa Lockman, Ketchikan; two nieces and two nephews.
Sherrye was preceded in death by daughter Heather Jo Leckrone.
Bettie Cormier
Elizabeth Marie (Bettie) Cormier, 83, died April 7, 2002, at Watertown, S..D.
She was born on July 14, 1918, at Philadelphia, Pa., and attended high school, business school and art school in Minneapolis, Minn.
She was employed at the Dayton Hudson department store and worked for the Honeywell Corporation during World War II.
During summer visits with the family of her uncle Vic Sather of Troy in the 1930’s, Bettie had met Martin Cormier of Libby. They were married at Westover Field, Mass., on April 1, 1943.
The couple lived at Minneapolis and Wayzata, Minn., before moving to Watertown in 1966.
Bettie was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and the church altar guild. She loved oil painting, birds and knitting afghans.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Martin, who died in January 1986.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Terry and Kathryn Cormier, Aberdeen, S.D.; Steve Cormier, Sandia Park, N.M.; John and Cindy Cormier, Watertown, and Mark and Debra Cormier, Hutchinson, Minn.; grandchildren Christopher Taylor, Tyler and Clarissa Cormier, and three step-grandsons, Casey, Jesse and Jory Steiner.
Bettie is also survived by brother-in-law Norman Cormier, Kernersville, N.C., who provided her obituary.
John Pomeroy
John Pomeroy, 50, died on Jan. 19, 2002, in Danbury, Conn.
He was born on Sept. 9, 1952, at Long Island, N.Y., and graduated from high school in Colorado Springs, Colo.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, serving aboard the Kitty Hawk from 1971-1975. After receiving an honorable discharge he joined the Naval Reserves.
John worked for Perk & Elmer, a computer company, doing lithography, and as a trouble shooter for the company, traveling to different states setting up computers.
In recent years he worked for Drakes Engineering in Danbury.
Survivors include his mother Luceta Pomeroy, Libby; brothers Dean Pomeroy, Maryland; David Pomeroy and his wife Merry in Washington, and Steven Pomeroy and his wife in Fruitland, Idaho, sister-in-law Sherry Gring, Libby, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 20, at the City of Libby Cemetery.
Verna Criner
Verna J. Criner, 59, a retired U.S. Postal Service employee from Libby, died April 5, 2002, at Atlanta, Ga., of Lou Gehrig’s disease.
She was born on Feb. 5, 1945, at Miles City, to Vernon and Luella Smith, and grew up in Shelby.
Verna married Gerald Criner, her high school sweetheart, on Nov. 11, 1962.
They lived at Shelby and at Kalispell for a short time before moving to Libby in December 1967.
Verna worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years until ALS forced her early retirement.
She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, the View Women’s Association, and was involved in numerous community and church related activities.
She is survived by her husband Gerald, Libby; daughters Tana L. Criner and her companion Galen Coleman, and Tami Criner Kidd, her husband Rodney and their children Jordan R. Kidd and Jocelyn G. Kidd, all of Atlanta; her mother Luella Steyee, sister Luana Dumas and brother-in-law Tracy Dumas, all of Shelby, and sister-in-law Sandy Steyee of Kalispell and several nieces and nephews.
Verna was preceded in death by her father Vernon Smith, step-father Melvin Steyee and brother Dennis Steyee.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, at Christ Lutheran Church in Libby.
Further services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Shelby with burial of ashes to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
Whitted Funeral Chapel of Shelby and Nelson & Vial Funeral Home of Libby are in charge of arrangements.
