Bette Jo Lockman
Longtime Troy area resident Bette Jo Lockman, 62, died on May 15, 2002, at her home, as the result of complications with cancer.
She was born on May 4, 1940, at Spokane, to Ernest and June Weaver.
Raised and educated in Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Bette Jo married Jamie Lockman on Aug. 10, 1957, at Sandpoint.
They lived in Delaware for five years before returning to Bonners Ferry in early 1962.
Later that year they moved to Libby where Jamie worked in the mill and in 1968 they moved to land they had purchased at the bottom of Yaak Hill near Troy.
Bette was a Watkins products dealer for many years.
She was active in the 4-H program, teaching cooking, and recently received a 25-year service pin.
Bette sold advertising for the Boundary County Fair books and served as fair cooking superintendent for many years.
For weeks before Christmas, Bette would bake dozens of cookies in 30-40 different varieties to give to family and friends. Her kitchen was the center of her home. She also loved her dogs, cats and humming birds.
Survivors include her husband Jamie Lockman, Troy; sons Jim Lockman and his wife Dottie, Crestview, Fla.; and Rick Lockman and his wife Georgie, Troy; daughter Beth Bray, Spokane; sister Penny Wallace and her husband George, Spokane; aunt Betsy Younger in Chicago; grandchildren Kimberly Bray, Spokane; Stacia and Jennifer Lockman in Oklahoma, and Kaytie Lockman, Troy.
Bette is also survived by longtime friends Alice Miller, Maxine Foote and Ethna Crooke.
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bonners Ferry.
Arrangements are under direction of the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home.
Dallas Haaby
Dallas R. Haaby, 74, died May 20, 2002, at Troy.
He was born on Jan. 6, 1928, in Ross County, Minn., to Inghart and Myrtle Molsness Haaby.
He was raised and educated in Minnesota and served with the U.S. Army in Louisiana and later in Germany.
After receiving an honorable discharge, Dallas moved to eastern Montana and later to Troy, where he had lived for many years.
He was employed by the J. Neils Lumber Company and St. Regis Paper Company, working in the woods and in the plant until retiring.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Troy.
Survivors include his daughter Joyce Wicklander and her husband Harley, Roseau, Minn.; brother Vernon Haaby and his wife Martha, Roseau; sisters Maxine Hagen and her husband Donald, and Nancy Olafson and her husband Vernon, all of Roseau, and Norma Sortberg, Grand Forks, N.D.; brother-in-law Charles Foss, Badger, Minn.; grandchildren Crystal and Jamie, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Dallas was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau.
Interment will be at Melum Cemetery in rural Roseau.
Local arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
Don Kozlowski
Former Libby resident Don (Ho) Kozlowski, 57, died in a car accident in Minnesota on May 18, 2002.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1944, at Reedsburg, Wis.
After completing high school, Don worked for Scott Construction and later worked as a heavy equipment operator in road construction.
He moved to Montana in 1980, working for Bonneville Power, Pumco and various logging crews. For the past 10 years he had worked in Libby, Alberton and Drummond.
He loved the mountains and it is no secret that he loved to party. When his mother talked to him about going to a doctor and taking care of himself, he told her, ”Ma, I’m going to live until I die.” And that is exactly what he did.
He will be missed by many people from many places.
Survivors include his parents Raymond and Alta Kozlowski, Lake Delton, Wis.; daughter Jackie and her husband Jody Lowe, Eau Claire, Wis.; son Kurt and his wife Holly Kozlowski, Madison, Wis.; brother Tim and his wife Monica Kozlowski, Princeton, Wis.; niece Jade Kozlowski and grandchildren Jessie, Jaycie and Josie Lowe and Kory and Ashlyn Kozlowski.
Funeral services will be conducted this week in Wisconsin and a memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Swedes Corner in Drummond at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.
Friends are asked to bring a memory, in writing, to share.
Ruth Hill
Ruth A. Hill, 89, a longtime Flathead Valley resident, died May 13, 2002, at the Libby Care Center.
She was born on May 14, 1912, at Creston, to Elmer and Artie Buck and was raised and educated at Creston.
She married James B. Hill on Oct. 25, 1930.
Ruth worked for the Woolworth Company as a bookkeeper and cashier for 35 years and remained in Kalispell following retirement until moving to Libby 10 years ago.
She was a member of the Central Christian Church and charter member of Eagles Auxiliary No. 234.
Ruth enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, huckleberry picking and camping.
She was preceded in death by her husband, sons Edward Hill and George Hill, and her parents.
Survivors include son James B. Hill and his wife Wanda, Libby; daughter Doris Selke, also of Libby; sisters Margaret Farris, Kalispell, and Betty Ketron, Missoula; 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Glacier Memorial Gardens in Kalispell.
Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Libby.
Tom Snyder
Former Troy resident Thomas J. (Tom) Snyder, 77, of Wallowa, Ore., died May 16, 2002, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise, Ore.
He was born on Jan. 30, 1925, at the home of his grandparents at the Mouth of Cottonwood Creek, in Asotin County, Wash., to Thomas and Ruby Graham Snyder.
He graduated from Anatone High School in 1941 at the age of 16 and began ranching on the Rye Ridge near Paradise, Ore.
Tom married Reta Mae Witherrite on May 27, 1948.
They ranched at Rye Ridge for 20 years before moving to Kettle Falls, Wash., and later to Northport, Wash., where Tom worked for the Van Stone Mine.
He also was employed by the American Smelting and Refining Co. for 23 years, at Northport and Leadville, Colo., before transferring to Troy in April 1981.
Tom retired in 1987 and they moved to Wallowa.
Survivors include his wife Reta, Wallowa; sons Timothy Snyder and his wife Jody, Joseph, Ore., and Terry Snyder, Elko, Nev.; daughters Norma Puls and her husband Jerry, Spokane, and Nancy Rolfsrud and her husband John, Keene, N.D.; brother William Snyder and his wife Rita, Corvllis, Ore., 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lillian and brother Frank.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston, Wash.
Pastor Jim Barnes of the First Christian Church at Troy will officiate.
Burial will follow at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston.

Allen Weatherwax
Allen William Weatherwax, 86, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at his home in Libby.
He was born at Williston, N.D., on July 23, 1915, to Fred and Mary Shaw Weatherwax.
He grew up in San Francisco, then moved to Sacramento, where he lived for 45 years.
In 1985 Allen moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, and four years ago he moved to Libby to be near his daughter Marquita Peterson.
Allen worked for Farmer’s Insurance Group in Sacramento for 45 years.
He enjoyed the outdoors and liked working on his homes and property in California and Idaho.
He participated in many 10K runs during the last 30 years of his life, always finishing first in his age group.
He will be remembered for his love of reading and collection of books.
After moving to Libby he used the Montana Athletic Club facilities daily and was a regular patron of the Libby Library, appreciating the friendly staff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Edith, Jane and Barbara, and brother Tom.
Survivors include his first wife and good friend Linda Harpham; his second wife Dawn Weatherwax; daughters Marquita Peterson and Alita Bush and her husband Michael; sons Eric Weatherwax and his wife Tracy and Chris Weatherwax; brother Robert Weatherwax; grandchildren Risha McCormack, Brendan McCormack, Chad Peterson, Katie, Robert and Michael Weatherwax, Brian and Kevin Bush; great-grandchildren Ashley, Whitney and Haley McCormack and Braxton and Nadria McCormack, and several nieces and nephews.
Private arrangements are by Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
