Jim Reynolds
James W. (Jim) Reynolds, 74, of Libby, died on Nov. 13, 2000, among family and friends in Spokane.
He was born on Dec. 2, 1925, in Arkansas and grew up in Oklahoma.
He married Geri York in California and they had a son, Steven York, who survives his father.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy and after his discharge, worked as a timber faller for most of his life.
He moved to Libby in 1954, where he married Arlene Rayson. He later married Hazel Masters.
Jim enjoyed singing and sang with a country western band, The Snake River Outlaws. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and camping.
He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel Masters Reynolds.
Survivors include sons Randy Reynolds, Rodney Reynolds and Joshua Reynolds; step-children Diane Murer, George Masters and Ronnie Masters; brothers Gene, Bill and Jack; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren. and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be conducted at 10 am. on Saturday, Nov. 25, at Wilkinson Hall.
Douglas Sheffler
Douglas Arthur Sheffler, 71, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, who attended school in Troy, died on Nov. 15, 2000, at the Boundary County Nursing Home in Bonners Ferry, after a long illness.
He was born on June 20, 1927, at Spirit Lake, Idaho, to Bert and Imogene Sheffler Westover and attended school in Troy and in Spokane.
He served for a short time in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II before receiving a medical discharge.
Doug worked as a packer for a sheepherder in the Purcell Mountains, was a logger and mill worker and also worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He also owned and operated a sawmill.
Music was his passion and he sang and played guitar at an early age. Over the years he played for dances at Curley Creek and State Line and in the mid-1970s he built and operated the Little Opry Hall at Rocky Creek. Musicians came from all over to jam and share their love of music.
Doug and his wife Kathy took their music on tour to Europe in 1979 and again in 1984 and were well received, making friendships that survived time and distance.
His wife, Kathy Sheffler of Bonners Ferry, to whom he was married in 1978, survives him.
Doug married Juanita Randolph in 1945 and they were divorced in 1978. He is also survived by his children, Mary Jo Moore, Sagle, Idaho; Michael Scott Sheffler, Athol, Idaho; Rosanna Kay Zirkle and her husband Don, Gautier, Miss., and Lena Jane Vahan, San Diego, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, his step-mother Dorothy Westover, four half-brothers and three half-sisters.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of God in Troy.
Arrangements were by Bonners Ferry Funeral Home in Bonners Ferry.
Carol McKee
Former Libby businesswoman Carol McKee, 59, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 15, 2000.
She was born on Aug. 19, 1941, at Chewelah, Wash., to Thomas and Nellie Kilgore.
Carol operated Carol Lee’s Dog Grooming on U.S. Highway 2 West for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Tommy, who died in infancy, and Carl, who died three years ago.
She is survived by her husband Brent McKee and Nellie (Angel) McKee, at home; Mike Yost of Spokane and Leslie Waits in Nebraska.
She is also survived by seven brothers and sisters, Bill Kilgore, Libby; Pat Rogers, Spokane; Ruth Johnson, Wasilla, Alaska; Nancy Kilgore, Medford, Ore.; Jim Kilgore, Port Angeles, Wash., Kathy (Shortie) Poffenroth, Newport, Wash., and June Kilgore, Missoula; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are pending and memorials may be made to the Heart, Lung and Kidney Foundation.
Alenath Rich
Former Libby teacher Alenath B. Rich, 95, longtime Rexford resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at North Valley Extended Care Center in Whitefish.
She was born on Sept. 27, 1905, at Whittier, Calif., to David and Carolyn Andrews Binford.
She was raised and educated at Huntington Park and attended teachers’ college at Los Angeles and at Dillon.
Alenath taught school at Rexford, Tooley Lake, Trego and Eureka and also taught at St. John’s Lutheran School in Libby and in the Libby Public Schools system.
She later taught at Whitefish until she retired in the late 1970’s.
Alenath married George (Shorty) Rich at Kalispell on Jan. 24, 1946, and they moved to Rexford. George preceded her in death in 1985.
Alenath was a longtime member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Eureka, the Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a second lieutenant in the Eureka Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.
During the 1960’s Alenath chronicled the development and construction of the Libby Dam Project for local news media, donating the collection in written word and memorabilia to the Tobacco Valley Museum. Alenath and George were also involved with the relocation of Rexford during the Libby Dam years
Alenath enjoyed handcrafts, especially knitting, and used her talents to benefit Mountain View Manor in Eureka, knitting afghans, slippers and socks for the residents.
Survivors include daughter Carolyn Pfrimmer and her husband Bruce, Whitefish; sons Kenneth Payton and his wife Doris, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Richard Payton and his wife Mary Lou, Rexford; daughter-in-law Toni Payton, Reno, Nev.; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son Donald Payton in 1998.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home in Eureka.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Eureka with Pastor Chris Tabbert officiating.
Interment services will follow at Tobacco Valley Cemetery.
Rob Sampson
Robin A. (Rob) Sampson, 52, of Troy, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 15, 2000, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1948, at Kalispell, to William and Vera Huston Sampson.
He attended schools at Bigfork and at Portland, Ore.
Rob served two tours of duty, from 1968 to 1970, with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, receiving a Purple Heart.
Rob lived in Nevada where he worked as miner for BHB Mining and later was employed as a prison guard before returning to Montana in August 2000, to live at Troy.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Ronni, Troy; children Matthew, St. Helens, Ore., and Adam, Ely, Nev.; step-children Heather, Jacob and Sefton Kienzle, Troy; granddaughter Lacie Jade Rowe; sisters Joy Martin, Amity, Ore., and Dera Davis, Troy; and brothers Steven and Abram Sampson, Noxon, and Thomas Sampson, Washington, D.C.
Services were conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Nelson & Vial Funeral Home Chapel in Libby.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Friday and until noon on Saturday at the funeral home.
Wilma Albert
Wilma Marguerite Prichard Albert, 89, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Brendan House in Kalispell.
She was born on June 7, 1911, at Fredona, Kan., to Tom and Elva Armstrong Prichard.
She graduated from Brockton High School in Brockton, Mont., in 1929 and married Ralph Albert on June 11, 1930.
They lived for many years in Libby where Wilma worked as a cook in her own restaurant and also as a camp cook for the Royal Logging Company.
Wilma loved sports, especially basketball and baseball and as a young woman she was a very good basketball player.
She remained a devout fan of both games.
Wilma will be remembered for her love of family and her church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph, two sisters and a son Tom.
Survivors include son Fred and his wife Kaye Albert; daughter-in-law Mary Albert; grandchildren Ralph Albert, Bob Albert, Jo Henley, Kelly Lee and Karla Ogle, all of Kalispell; Russell Albert and Kyler Albert, both of Denver; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation was from 3-6 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Interment followed at Glacier Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements were under direction of the Buffalo Hill Funeral Home.
